Do u dont wanna A restaurant tried to pull a switch-a-roo on the type of meat I was served.

So a group of us went to a local popular American chain steakhouse restaurant and all ordered different dishes. I ordered a filet, when my food arrived, I thought the steak looked more like a sirloin than a filet.

Upon taking my first bite it was chewy and not buttery like a filet. It was supposed to be an 8oz filet, it was more like 12oz sirloin, 2nd bite confirmed it was definitely not a filet.

I must’ve been visibly upset because the manager walked over and asked if everything was ok, to which I questioned the cut. She said it was a filet (but I think she went based on the toppings that are only offered on the filet). I said hmm ok, I guess.

She offered to switch it if I was not happy, I said it was fine, however, she insisted, so I accepted.. The second steak was a filet, appearance, taste and texture.. only the cook made it EXTRA peppery for me.. jokes on them I appreciated the extra pepper :)

AGGRESSIVELY SEASONED! Like someone sprinkled on the appropriate amount and then beat the ELS out of the steak with further seasoning.

u/neurovish Aug 23 '26

Which is how they do it at Outback. If they don’t have like 3 sent back a night for being overly seasoned, then they are not being seasoned enough. I wish they still had the wood grill steaks.

u/IloveMe80 Aug 23 '26

I worked at Outback in 2001. Everything was freshly made from scratch and was so good. I miss food at restaurants being good.

16

u/Ok_Sand5064 Aug 23 '26

They were so good! Until recently I was going because they still hand breaded the chicken strips but now they’ve switched and they’re so gross. End of an era!

Longhorn employee here. Our policy (same as outback) is a generously seasoned steak. We call it “boldly seasoned”. Don’t know how they word it but yeah, it’s policy. FYI we still hand bread every order of nuggies and it really is like the #2 sold thing on the menu so if that is your jam, come see us!

I’m not much of a steak person, but I ain’t gonna lie…………Longhorn, for a steak restaurant, has the absolute best tenders!

Paired with steamed broccoli and mashed potatoes, it doesn’t get any better!

1

u/merga_mage Aug 26 '26

I love Longhorn but rarely get a steak. That Parmesan crusted chicken is that amazing. And the Brussels sprouts too

4

u/1Crazyoldman Aug 23 '26

I love Longhorn. Outlaw ribeye. Definitely "BOLDLY " seasoned. Yummm.

5

u/RobotRepair69 Aug 23 '26

I usually make steak at home but my GF worked late and we wanted steak so went to Longhorn recently. The Ribeye was much better than I expected for a chain...she likes Texas Roadhouse but I think Longhorn is much better.

4

u/IloveMe80 Aug 23 '26

Longhorn has always had good tenders. The prairie dust is a good seasoning.

1

u/poopiebutt505 Aug 23 '26

Love your salmon

1

u/SqWR37 Aug 24 '26

Piggy backing off of this. I believe LongHorn has managers tray up steaks for prep and the filets are marked. Could have been a bad filet but I doubt it was a sirloin. Mistakes (pun intended) happen but not like people think.

1

u/anonanon5320 Aug 24 '26

Of the cheap steakhouses, Longhorn is the best.

u/OkSmoke9195 Aug 23 '26

Oh man didn't they used to do the shrimp on a wood grill too? I'm tapping into 30 year old memories here

Shrimp on the baaaarbie

9

u/khory Aug 23 '26

No. I worked for them 25 years ago, the grills were gas and the steaks were cooked on a flattop

16

u/ChaosRainbow23 Aug 23 '26

After you left they added wood fired grills about 15 years ago.

2

u/varys2013 Aug 28 '26

An Australian told me that expression bothers them a bit. They'd never say that, apparently. It would be "prawns on the barbie", if anything.

7

u/Bender_2024 Aug 23 '26

I wish they still had the wood grill steaks.

I'll be honest with you. It was just the same propane grill with wood smoldering underneath in the drip trays. And it was never replenished during service. It was too much much of a pain in the ass when you've got 20 slips hanging and the printer is spitting out more. The couple of logs under there that were placed before opening were the only ones that went in all night.

What OP experienced was just the cook making an error. The sirloin and fillet are about the same size and shape. Someone just grabbed the wrong steak and the expo missed it too.

1

u/Frequent_Opportunist Aug 23 '26

When did they stop the wood grill?

I think they still have it here by me... same steaks that Carrabba's grills on their wood grill.

1

u/neurovish Aug 24 '26 edited Aug 24 '26

Maybe they still do at some locations. The wood grilled option disappeared at the restaurants near me a few years ago.

Carrabba’s should still have the wood grilled steaks though.

Like Ron Swanson asking for ‘all the bacon and eggs’.

I worry what you just heard was “give me a lot of bacon and eggs.” What I said was “give me all the bacon and eggs you have.” Do you understand?

43

u/Sufficient_Sell_6103 Aug 23 '26

I like dark haired women and breakfast foods

2

u/omega2010 Aug 23 '26

Which explains why Ron married Xena!

1

u/ImaginaryFlamingo116 Aug 23 '26

I absolutely love this quote but at the same time, sir, be so for real. No one can eat 600 eggs in one sitting, much less all the bacon they have on top of that. This is a commercial business, not your mother’s house.

1

u/imnickelhead Aug 23 '26

This is Ron motherfcuking Swanson we’re talking about.

3

u/Stansfield997 Aug 23 '26

The guy literally changes kids to men, men to gladiators, and gladiators to Swansons. Someone just can suspend disbelief it appears

54

u/thatcavdude Aug 22 '26

Which results in a better flavor and break down of the meat fibers.

43

u/IowaSmoker2072 Aug 22 '26

Breakdown of the meat fibers? A properly aged and dry brined filet shouldn't need anything else or to even get near a flame to have all the flavor and tenderness it needs.

93

u/TreeFiddyJohnson Aug 22 '26

Yeah, but we're talking about Outback. Does outback dry brine and age steaks?

97

u/Marquar234 Aug 22 '26

"Look, we cut it off the steer, what more do you want?"

2

u/AI_RPI_SPY Aug 23 '26

"knock off its horns and wipe its arse"

1

u/Christopher_Aeneadas Aug 23 '26

Are you sure it was a steer?

42

u/Donkeylover1 Aug 23 '26

"Of course, I can get a good look at a T-bone steak by sticking my head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take a butcher's word for it."

6

u/VenusBlue78 Aug 23 '26

Wait! It's gotta be your bull.

One post up in my scrolling was a post asking for the funniest movie you've ever seen. The Universe be synchronizing tonight.

3

u/EthanielRain Aug 23 '26

Dumb & Dumber would probably have to be my answer, but Tommy Boy is wonderful too

2

u/uabtodd Aug 23 '26

Greatest comedy of all time!

1

u/Rebelius Aug 23 '26

What are these references to?

2

u/Rurikungart Aug 23 '26

99% of "high end" steakhouses don't dry brine, nor age their steaks. If they do, they will let you know about it.

-17

u/IowaSmoker2072 Aug 22 '26

And this is why I don't even order steak in GOOD steakhouses. Notice my handle? It has nothing to with anything but smoking meat. Ordering beef or pork in a restaurant results in nothing but disappointment. Even in Kansas City and Texas. Only time lately I was pleasantly surprised at BBQ that I didn't cook myself was a few months ago at a hole in the wall joint in St. Paul. Big chain places I go into with very low expectations.

32

u/Nardorian1 Aug 22 '26

We went from steak to bbq pretty fast.

20

u/goagod Aug 22 '26

And from "I NEVER order steak" to "I went in with low expectations."

-2

u/IowaSmoker2072 Aug 23 '26

I have low expectations for whatever I order that ISN'T steak.

7

u/Will_White Aug 22 '26

Same concept, if you can follow a youtube video and have a basic understanding of meat cookery you can make a better steak at home then most steakhouses for half or less the price. The biggest problem is finding a good butcher.

15

u/dapperwater Aug 22 '26

Look I can stick my head up the butchers ass to get a look at the T-bone steak....wait no, it's gotta be your bull

4

u/Will_White Aug 23 '26

Yes my own steers do produce very good steaks.

2

u/IowaSmoker2072 Aug 23 '26

I can't raise my own steers, but I have friends that do. Except for briskets which steers only seem to produce one of, I haven't bought beef in a supermarket for over 20 years. I like knowing where the steer came from, and who processed it.

2

u/Nardorian1 Aug 22 '26

Oh I can cook a steak and I have a great butcher.

3

u/MarkOfIowa Aug 22 '26

Name of the St. Paul place, please...

8

u/IowaSmoker2072 Aug 22 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

ZZQ Smokehouse 3390 Coachman Rd #204, Eagan, MN 55121. Well it's CLOSE to St. Paul

2

u/IowaSmoker2072 Aug 22 '26

I'll see if I can find it. Might have to ask my daughter, she took us there.

3

u/SantasDead Aug 23 '26

Steaks, hamburgers, and a few other things I refuse to buy at a restaurant. I can make it better at home and I'm always disappointed with what I'm served.

1

u/poopiebutt505 Aug 23 '26

O don't buy buns, tomatoes, lettuce, etc. So I will buy a hamburger out. I have to take medicine to be able to eat those things, so it is a ine off, so I only eat them out. I do make hamburger steak with mayo at home.

2

u/MarcusSurealius Aug 22 '26

There are food trucks i make exceptions for.

2

u/IceExtreme5574 Aug 23 '26

Being from St. Paul I’m interested in where you ate.

1

u/IowaSmoker2072 Aug 23 '26

ZZQ Smokehouse 3390 Coachman Rd #204, Eagan, MN 55121. Well it's CLOSE to St. Paul

2

u/IowaSmoker2072 Aug 23 '26

Everyone mad cause I not only grill steaks I also smoke all kinds of meat? And do it better than most places that serve people who don't know any better.

1

u/Illustrious-Dot-1128 Aug 23 '26

Why would you still go in though, if you have such low expectations of them?

2

u/IowaSmoker2072 Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

Because I'm part of a group that wants to eat there. Or I'm traveling and don't have the opportunity to cook for myself. I don't always have a choice. You never find yourself in that situation? When I do I prefer to find a Mexican restaurant where no one speaks English, at least as their first language. Not a steakhouse.

1

u/abbynorma1 Aug 22 '26

Agreed. I make the best steaks.

0

u/Sensei_Fing_Doug Aug 22 '26

No I do.

3

u/QuesoMuchacho Aug 23 '26

No, I do! And we’ll never settle this because I (and assuming we) wont order anybody else’s!

5

u/AsaCoco_Alumni Aug 23 '26

ELS?

18

u/TheSpyStyle Aug 23 '26

“Ever-loving shit” I’m assuming

10

u/unlordtempest Aug 23 '26

No, no. It's 'electric light sousaphone'. Everybody knows this

1

u/CreekBeaterFishing Aug 23 '26

An integral part of the orchestra.

1

u/unlordtempest Aug 23 '26

Hold on. Is that what Fry is holding actually called?

7

u/According_Gazelle472 Aug 22 '26

This is why I never order steak anywhere in my town. I really dislike the heavy handed seasoning .

43

u/CommanderCCS Aug 23 '26

Our ancestors fought and died for those spices

1

u/unlordtempest Aug 23 '26

The spice melange...

1

u/IncomeAggravating932 Aug 23 '26

Well, mostly the natives died for those spices tbh

0

u/yve74 Aug 23 '26

Babes. Just ask for light seasoning. Don’t deny yourself steak lol

1

u/According_Gazelle472 Aug 23 '26

I don't like overly seasoned food ,period.

2

u/Babzibaum Aug 23 '26

"ELS", ooooo, Imma gonna use that

2

u/chiPersei Aug 23 '26

Exceptionally Light Seasoning? jk

1

u/ohyoshimi Aug 23 '26

It’s to hide the horse

1

u/Consistent-Shoe-9602 Aug 23 '26

Seasoning, is that what the youth calls it nowadays? 🤣😝🤮

1

u/EpilepticMushrooms Aug 23 '26

Seasoned like an exorcism! I love extra pepper sauce, and wasabi for my sushi. But I detest chili and all things chili. My tastes are just weird yo.

1

u/CaptainC0medy Aug 23 '26

Yo DAWG! We heard you like seasoning! So we seasoned the seasoning we put on your seasoned filet!

1

u/HotSauceNSpeakers Aug 23 '26

Served with an aggressive zinfandel.

1

u/moh1969b Aug 23 '26

Cooks that are smokers tend to season heavier because their tastebuds are deadened.

1

u/ToniBraxtonAndThe3Js Aug 23 '26

It's because there are NO RULES at Outback
