That’s a Hot Toddy. Good for what ails ya! Just repeat until you feel no pain.

u/alady12 Sep 01 '26

You are still sick, but you don't care.

When my mom was little, she was given Hot Toddies by her German mother. This was in the '30s-'40s and she remembered never really caring that she was sick. She grew up to be a non-drinker, surprisingly enough.

Add steaming hot water to that mix and you have a drink called hot toddy. I swear by it in the winter for colds, sore throats, headaches, etc.

They are excellent. I introduced my Swedish bf to them when he got a really nasty flu one year while we were in Stockholm. He started drinking them just for enjoyment in the winter. They really do help, imo.

My husband gives these the unappetising name of “homemade lemsip”

u/procrastimom Sep 02 '26

Ew. Tell him to stop.

3

u/Difficult_Ask_1686 Sep 01 '26

I’m happy it helps. He probably feels no pain all winter.

u/SecretaryOtherwise Sep 03 '26

You turned him into an alcoholic way to go.

/s lmao

When I was a kid and had a bad cold or sore throat my mom would make a hot toddy heavy on the honey and lighter on the whiskey. I would take about two swallows and and then decide I wanted a nap. She would finish the rest. Looking back on it it was an absolutely brilliant way to get a sick whiny kid to sleep.

Y'all's mother's are amateurs.

My mom would give me hot toddy's light on the Whiskey, honey, and water and heavy on the tussin.

It worked so well I slept straight through the divorce.

You can make an excellent cure for colds and sore throats by carving a funnel out of a radish root and filtering honey through it. The resulting liquid tastes so extraordinarily foul that the body goes belligerently berserk on the illness for fear of getting the evil and depraved treatment again. I hated this atrocity of a concoction without reserve, but it helped every time.

Dying!🤣🤣🤣

Add a cinnamon stick for extra flavor

2

u/multipocalypse Sep 01 '26

If you add a packet of Theraflu, a packet of instant apple cider (lots of vitamin C) and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, it works even better 😆

We make ours with Throat Coat tea - it’s actually super helpful for my musician husband when he has to perform when he has a sore throat.

I was at a friends house (many years ago) and was feeling a bit rough. Her mother (French) took pity on me and made me a drink - warm milk, vanilla, little bit of sugar and a large splash of brandy. After that I wasn’t sure if I fancied the mum or the daughter more…

u/Vegetable-Hand-6770 Sep 01 '26

This still works with my kid, i just cut out the lemon and honey.

3

u/NoDay4343 Sep 01 '26

There is scientific evidence backing up both honey and lemon as cough treatment. It won't cure it but it does soothe it. Alcohol in cough syrups was, I believe, primarily included as a solvent. But the fact is that it can be a sleep aid of sorts (helps you fall asleep but reduces the quality of your sleep), and if a cough is keeping you awake, that's useful. Low quality sleep is better than no sleep. My mother only used the lemon honey, no alcohol, but I can attest that it works surprisingly well. I still use it.

My mom would give us tea with lemon, honey and whiskey when we had a cold. Having a cold wasn't as unpleasant with that concoction.

u/Useful-Emphasis-6787 Sep 01 '26

I think gripe water previously had alcohol, given to colic babies. And people used to rub babies gums with alcohol or something when they were teething.

People were truly wild back then.

1

u/Suspicious_Bear42 Sep 01 '26

Anecdotal, but I can verify. I'm an 80s baby, and my parents still have the bottle of brandy they used on my gums while I was teething.

1

u/Suspicious-Water-973 Sep 01 '26

4-9% alcohol

You can still get something similar for teething (at least in the UK) - Anbesol - lidocaine and alcohol to rub on the gums. There is an adult version as wells

u/Former_Matter49 Sep 01 '26

My grandma poured this same recipe into hot tea. She called it the Two Hat Cure. You put your hat on the bedpost, lie back, and sip tea until you see two hats. LOL

You can tell it's an older cure. Who has a hat and a bedpost? Still works though

2

u/Linda-Eskin Sep 11 '26

When I have a cold I make herbal tea with a healthy dose of lemon juice, honey, and whatever I have on hand (triple sec, whiskey, peach schnapps, whatever). I call it “Linda‘s cures-what-ails-you tea.“ When I told my old GP/family doctor my recipe he said it was actually probably a better option than most cough medicines. The lemon acts as an expectorant, thinning mucus. The honey is soothing to irritated mucus membranes. And the alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that can help quiet your cough.

1

u/Accomplished_Will226 Sep 01 '26

It still works. Well I would not give kids the whisky but my MIL made the same remedy.

1

u/bookworthy Sep 01 '26

My great-great grandfather had a patented liniment which called for “tincture of opium”. So you might still hurt all over, but maybe you wouldn’t care?

1

u/Any_Poet4127 Sep 01 '26

The only OTC opiods around then were weak codeine mixtures and addiction/overdose was a well known phenomena by then so I doubt your great grandmother would give her crazy amounts. There are much worse things you can give someone with a cough 🤷

1

u/Difficult_Ask_1686 Sep 01 '26

My grandmother did that in the 70s. She’s from WV.

1

u/tourchy2 Sep 01 '26

Double the whiskey and shake with ice and you have a Goldrush

1

u/edgerton2026 Sep 01 '26

We were. Paregoric for tummy aches. Made you fell warm all over. 1950s-60s.

1

u/MuchGrounded Sep 01 '26

We were given this growing up. My Dad mixed it up calling it ‘Honey whiskey and lemon’. Yes it did make you sleepy this was in the 70s.

1

u/bellegroves Sep 01 '26

Yeah, my grandma and her teetotaler bestie both kept whiskey on hand for hot toddies. Straight up lemon when your throat is already sore just sounds like torture.

1

u/Born-Substance-1987 Sep 01 '26

Whiskey is medicine but when I try to get my FSA to pay for it I suddenly have a problem.

1

u/highknees69 Sep 01 '26

Ahh, the Irish cough syrup.

1

u/CoffeeChocolateBoth Sep 01 '26

It was more like, shut these kids up, here take this! My stupid friend use to give her daughter nyquil for the same reason! 🤬

1

u/BravestBlossom Sep 01 '26

My great grandmother had a cough syrup, which is pour peach schnapps into a small (shot) glass, and sip as slowly as possible.

It's perfect. Soothes the throat and chills you out😂😉

1

u/tequila_23_sheila Sep 01 '26

My dad would give me a Hot Toddy as a child. Only thing, alcohol is stimulant for me, so it didn’t put me to sleep. 😅 Today, it’s still the only I go for to set me body straight when all ails me! ☘️✨

1

u/wannastayhome Sep 01 '26

cough cough ...cough cough… 🍋 🍯 🥃

1

u/Aleja72 Sep 01 '26

Mine too! It totally works 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

1

u/PolkaDotDancer Sep 01 '26

Are you kidding? I still use that remedy. Only I substitute rum because nobody drinks whiskey in my family.

1

u/kimmy-mac Sep 01 '26

My mother gave this to me as a cough/sore throat remedy in the 1970s.

1

u/Time-Reward-8780 Sep 02 '26

My grandfather was watching me for the weekend when I was 8 had a bad cold. Gave me a toddy & i slept for 24 hours. My mother was not pleased

1

u/Wheatabix11 Sep 02 '26

rub it on the gums for teething

1

u/LibraryNecessary3576 Sep 02 '26

Honey is one of the best remedies for coughs due to its demulcent effect.

1

u/momoftwoiloveyou Sep 02 '26

My mother made that too!!

1

u/Rakuen91 Sep 02 '26

Can you pre make the mixture and add hot water to it?

1

u/BBCDaddy58 Sep 04 '26

That is because they had Latin. And cocaine. Straight from the source platinum was nothing but heroin and you know what cocaine is.

1

u/BBCDaddy58 Sep 04 '26

That is because they had Laudanum
Or cocaine. Straight from the source was nothing but heroin and you know what cocaine is.

1

u/Icy_Silver_5231 Sep 04 '26

150 lemons equates to several GALLONS of vodka and many pounds of honey. You're sleeping for sure...

2

u/LeatherPurple9284 Sep 01 '26

You had me thinking the original word was remedo. >:(

1

u/bellegroves Sep 01 '26

Reme-do a remedy, not a reme-don't.

IDK. Don't suck on lemons every day for two years, whatever else you get up to.

1

u/Impossible-Chain5247 Sep 02 '26

Lemonade can every day
