You might be joking but is going to happen and is already happening.   If OpenAI slowly "skews" the answers to more right/left/whatever leaning, or whatever topic they want to push at the moment, a big chunk of the population will go for it.

The goal is not only control of the data, is also control of what a lot of people perceive as "real/fact". Remember all the problems we, as a society, had and have with Facebook and the millions who got radicalized even knowing that it was "others" giving that info?

Now imagine the same, but now is not others, but a machine that many think is 100% right always.

In 5 years, what will be the ad value of ChatGPT prioritizing brand X over Y when someone asks "What is the best orange juice "?

I dunno why I didn’t consider that all the people I know who ask ChatGPT every damned thing might also ask who to vote for. 😞

It's kind of cute how you think that there's a chance of it skewing both ways instead of the way that all of the tech oligarchs favor.

It would be too obvious if OpenAI tweaked the model tbh, like how grok is tweaked so overtly for whatever Elon thinks. That being said a much easier and safer option is to flood LLM training data with shitty websites and Reddit comments supporting whatever candidate you want. Stuff like this has already been tested as a working strategy especially for companies who want to manipulate the training data for the sake of marketing.
