This. Just because it’s in a contract doesn’t mean it’s enforced unless you’re dealing with the Mafia lol. I could write for example a lease contract for an apartment that says for every day you’re late on rent, you have to run a 5 minute mile. Sure, it’s in there, but doesn’t mean a judge would find it reasonable or enforceable.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the phrase “at an arms length” applies. Basically, would the average person or a group of your peers think this was a reasonable requirement the average person in the community could meet.

I used to have a lot more faith in the "average person." Then the last 10 years happened.

At an arms length refers to your personal space/business. Keeping someone at an arms length means keeping someone close, but not too close.

It refers to the size of fine print on posters and adverts and its a metaphor, if the average person can't read the fine print at arms length, it may as well not be there.

Interesting. I’d never heard that version before. (I am not exactly wrong either btw, I just didn’t realize there were business uses to the phrase too) TIL

True and it's about the idea that an average person should be able to understand the fine print without extra tools, assistance or strain as it's presented.

Thanks for the knowledge. I feel I am about to dive into a rabbit hole to explore phrases I’ve used my whole life and never knew they had more or deeper meanings.
