I'm slightly vexed Grown man gets mad because he doesn’t know what ordering a “plain” burger means

So I work at Five Guys and for those who don’t know, when you order a burger there you get to fully customize the toppings on it (helps justify the price tag a tiny bit i guess). And you choose between a little (single) or regular (double) burger.

I had a pleasant enough exchange with a customer while ringing up his food… and when it came to his cheeseburger I asked what toppings he wanted on it. He looked at me and said, “Oh you know… just a plain, regular cheeseburger.” Ok great, a cheeseburger with nothing on it, easy enough.

Well we make the food, and a minute after he gets it he comes back up to me, visibly annoyed and holding the burger.

“You made my food wrong. There’s nothing on it.”

“Oh I’m sorry sir, I thought you’d ordered a plain cheeseburger.”

“I did. Do you not know what that means? Like a McDonald’s burger.”

Ok first of all, “McDonald’s” is not a standard for how someone orders burger toppings and second of all, this guys in his late 40s to early 50s and has never once run into this issue ordering a plain burger?

“Ok I’m sorry about that sir, we’ll remake that for you. What exactly did you want on it?”

I shit you not, with an annoyed voice he ordered:
Ketchup. Lettuce. Pickles.
So notably NOT a McDonald’s cheeseburger???

He got what he wanted in the end and I apologized because customer service but like?? I’m in awe at the sheer level of misunderstanding and audacity.

I have a similar story from when I worked at rally’s during high school years ago during the 2000’s. Lady came thru the drive thru and order a cheeseburger only mustard. Okay so I ring up a rally burger with cheese with only mustard. Hand her her order and watch as she starts to pull away and then makes a sharp turn into the lot. Lady marches up to the walk up window and starts pounding on it. I open the window and ask her what’s wrong with her order so I can have it fixed. She immediately screams this has cheese on it. Very confused I said you ordered a cheeseburger with only mustard correct? She said yes a cheeseburger with only mustard so why does it have cheese?!?!? So I said in response so you meant to order a hamburger then and not a cheeseburger? She screams no a cheeseburger without cheese. I said that’s a hamburger. She then proceeded to shove her bitten into cheeseburger directly into my face like full contact shit went up my nose. I stepped away from the window and looked at my manager who watched the scene play out who then told her bitch I’ll make your fucking hamburger but we will see if gets done before the cops get here. I was 17 and my manager was a family friend that I grew up calling him my uncle and he had a different worker run to the phone to call the cops while he came to back me up.

Its stories like this that make me think whether some people in the world are so dumb that perhaps they think a hamburger has "ham" on it or ham instead of beef. Because how else can you fuck this up in your head so royally?????
