Foot. The joints near his toes are his toe-knuckles, the joint visible bottom-center of the pic is his ankle. Cats and dogs have the same joints that humans have. It just seems strange because the foot/shin/calf proportions are different (humans have small feet and long shins and thighs). Cats and dogs also don't walk on their heels (think of them as walking on tippy-toes), and their thighs are positioned to either side of their belly most of the time.
