science savvy 🧬 The left side represents the most common false memories from the Mandela Effect—a psychological phenomenon where large groups of people share the same vivid but incorrect recollection.

I remember as a kid our teacher told us the it would be pronounced stine (no, not steen), if it was spelled with an “e”. And that memory brought me out of the Mandela effect.

Yeah that's correct for German words with an ei but for some reason a lot of people say steen, which would be with an ie in German. Don't really know why, maybe there was confusion or it's different in another language? I know English is usually the opposite with how it pronounces them so it could just be that

It’s mostly about which wave shaped American English: 1700s–1800s Germans → agrarian, spread out, assimilated, influence faded

Late 1800s–1900s Eastern European Jewish immigrants (Yiddish speakers) → concentrated in cities, more visible, more impact on AE

So their pronunciations stuck. That’s why you get “Ep-steen” instead of the German “Ep-shtine". It’s about visibility and reinforcement, not population size or how early they immigrated.

Full on German pronunciation is actually "shtine"

That is so obviously photoshopped after the t that it’s pissing me off

I still have books from my childhood with that spelling as well.

Part of me wonders if the transition wasn’t to screw the original author/family out of royalties.

But what you saw wasn't what was there.

Exactly. It's fake and you're spreading fb bullshit as real. Wtf is wrong with you? Why would you do that?

Bootleg

Doesn’t matter. The point is there is no Mandela Effect when something exists. The recollection is vivid, but not incorrect.

Bootlegs with misspellings didn't exist on a widespread enough scale for the mandela effect to make sense for that reasoning. That image is also photoshopped
