humankind hiccups šŸ˜… Well this aged like milk.

Post image

Stumbled upon this while clearing out the attic.

She visited my primary school in Edinburgh shortly after releasing TPS. The girl in front of me (my friend and train-to-school comrade) was Southeast Asian and has an incredibly elaborate sounding name. When Joanne screwed up her face when my friend gave her her name for the signature, I laughed. This is how she decided to sign my copy.

I was laughing at you, JK.

EDIT: It’s on EBay.

i think she is actually referring to a rolling pin, like the one for baking (pictured)

101

u/ma1butters May 02 '26

It's definitely this.

1

u/Pupusas_Man May 02 '26

Yup a Row of pins up her arse. Rolling in the deeeeeeep

1

u/AStormOfDragons1 May 02 '26

There's a fiyyahh Rowlin in the deep...

168

u/spaceisourplace222 May 02 '26

Well, today I learned I’ve been saying it wrong for 20 years. It’s what she deserves (and clearly cares about)

66

u/ILikeToDickDastardly May 02 '26

I take it you never heard this one:

"How did Harry Potter get down the hill?"

"walking... jk, rowling"

2

u/fofxequalsfofy May 02 '26

Haha let’s put a pin on this

1

u/Apprehensive_Flow99 May 05 '26

*in. Sorry 😊

1

u/fofxequalsfofy May 05 '26

Haha respect

2

u/Call_like_it_is_ May 04 '26

šŸŽ¶ They see me Rowling... they laughin' šŸŽ¶

1

u/dougiewuggie May 04 '26

I have never heard this. Thank you. (25 years after reading her book when I wassss pronouncing it wrong but quickly learned otherwise.)

0

u/Chase_the_tank May 02 '26

They almost legged it but witches are not climbing.

38

u/JacedFaced May 02 '26

Well lucky for us she has made it abundantly clear that she doesn't give a fuck about how using the wrong names makes other people feel, so Joanna Rawlings can just suck it up.

2

u/Feisty-Comfort-3967 May 02 '26

Who? Jemina Quay Rowkang?

0

u/Plastic_Bedroom_6210 May 02 '26

Yup we love her. Suck it with your man feelings.

-2

u/420camaro May 02 '26

Quite a difference between laughing at someone's birth giving name compared to rightfully accusing men of being men and women of being women but go ahead reach further it totally shows you have a logical thought process that will incline people to agree with you.

15

u/eamus_catuli_ May 02 '26

How have you been saying it?

64

u/spaceisourplace222 May 02 '26

The Rowl part has always rhymed with Owl, in my head.

5

u/feNdINecky May 02 '26

You're not alone

2

u/viaticaloutlaw May 02 '26

I’m not an owl!!!

1

u/Adorable-Evidence747 May 03 '26

Lol me and my kids use this line ALL the time!

1

u/Frequent_Coat_2030 May 02 '26

Same with me 🤣

1

u/ACatsBed May 03 '26

Funny enough I believe that's how its supposed to be pronounced but she gave up correcting people

87

u/RhetoricalOrator May 02 '26

I've always said it so that "Row-" rhymes with "wow."

39

u/Purple-Delivery2885 May 02 '26

Musta been your first rowdy-o

8

u/pussywitasideofranch May 02 '26

This is so funny to me 🤣

2

u/DrTeeeevil May 02 '26

Your username is funny to me

2

u/Appropriate-Race-763 May 02 '26

I always get in an argument when I use the oars in my boat. ;-)

6

u/HomieeJo May 02 '26

I will now pronounce her name like Owen Wilson pronounces his wow.

6

u/RdCrestdBreegull May 02 '26

yea it’s ā€˜Row-ā€˜ like ā€˜crow’

Theme from the TV show Rawhide! Thank you!

2

u/sabretoothian May 04 '26

I pronounce it as row, but never row. If that's unclear, the way I say it rhymes with bow, but not bow.

Glad that's cleared up.

3

u/angelofmusic997 May 02 '26

I think a lot of folks have. Strangely, I have memories of people around me being rather inconsistent with how her name was pronounced. Sometimes it would be Rowling-rhymes-with-bowling, other times it would be Rowling-rhymes-with-howling. (I seem to recall even the media not having a settled pronuncation, but I could be misremembering. I don't remember particular show segments, so I'm not exactly able to fact-check, especially given how popular JK is, and has been over the years.)

1

u/Je_in_BC May 02 '26

I genuinely thought you meant you were pronouncing "rolling pin" as "row-ling pin".

u/RhetoricalOrator May 02 '26

It's embarrassing. I'm American and a voracious reader, but have never actually heard her say her own name for me to pick up on it.

As a matter of fact, I have a distinct problem with mispronunciations because I read a lot but don't watch it listen to a lot of content related to details like that.

Other notable names I butcher are: St. Augustine and John Chrysostom.

2

u/MogwaiAJ May 03 '26

Then you have to also get into regional pronunciations and such. 'Tis a slippery slope and "correct" for one region (even within the same country) will be "incorrect" for another.

-1

u/TantalusComputes2 May 02 '26

And you pronounce bowling ā€œbowelingā€?

7

u/Fair_Wishbone7558 May 02 '26

Do you pronounce howling like bowling?

5

u/_420_DaBbeR_ May 02 '26

Who doesn’t love a good boweling

2

u/nineandaquarter May 02 '26

I don't know whether to scowl or scold.

30

u/clawdaughter May 02 '26

Like howling, but with an r.

3

u/AgentCirceLuna May 02 '26

Uh oh… looks like we’ve got JK Howling on Twitter again.

Also, sometimes I believe her whole schtick was a psy-op because her books definitely used to be associated with ā€˜liberal’ types who loved art or writing (how dare they!) and were always told to ā€˜read another book’. Her new discrimination meant she captured a new audience of ignorant pin heads so I don’t see that take as often.

10

u/hail_to_the_beef May 02 '26

I’ve been saying it to rhyme with ā€˜howling’ so this is new to me too

4

u/throwaway-girls May 02 '26

How though, this cretin's name has been in the media in some form or another for nearly 30 years and you never heard her name spoken out loud?

Wish I could be that lucky.

2

u/gcalig May 02 '26

The way I say it, it rhymes with "bunt"

23

u/TerrifyingPug May 02 '26

I personally always pronounced it like r-ow-ling

19

u/Datalyzer420 May 02 '26

That clears it up

2

u/Benkyougin May 02 '26

I always pronounce it as rowling, as is the rowling in jk rowling.

1

u/Boil-Degs May 02 '26

do you have any idea how little that helps

3

u/Datalyzer420 May 02 '26

what else do you need?? They spelled it out for you lmao /s

1

u/CBWeather May 02 '26

I thought it was pronounced "bigot".

-1

u/coppertonebaby12 May 02 '26

weird I’ve been pronouncing it as TERF šŸ¤”

0

u/KayItaly May 02 '26

No not Terf (tran exclusionary radical feminist), this are

FARTs

(Feminism appropriating radical transphobes)

This people are NOT feminists, let's keep remininding them.

28

u/meloedee May 02 '26

wow-ling but replace the first W with an R

12

u/jordansinn May 02 '26

Unless you're Johnathan Ross

1

u/kevsterd May 02 '26

Lucky it wasn't Roland Riveron then...

1

u/AgentCirceLuna May 02 '26

There was a violent guy in my class who had that issue with pronouncing rs and someone told me to tell him ā€˜raspberry ripple’s ready’. I assumed he was getting food or something, not even thinking it could be a huge risk, then I repeated it to him. The next thing I knew, I was flying through the air and smacking into a wall while he fired kicks at me as I tried to get up. I didn’t even know I’d done anything wrong.

Edit

Also, the irony is that I had this issue myself and had to spend years training my mouth to say r properly.

1

u/Lazy-Interests May 02 '26

Johnathan Woss you mean?

1

u/philllihp May 02 '26

Not trying to be an ass and to be fair I've lived in the US and the UK most of my life but how did you get to this?

5

u/spicycheezits May 02 '26

I’m from the PNW and everyone I’ve ever met has pronounced it that way 😭 didn’t know it was wrong

1

u/Narrow_Employee2959 May 02 '26

I now know that I’m. It alone.

1

u/CommonGrounders May 02 '26

I've been calling her Crandall!

1

u/Iohet May 02 '26

Like it's spelled.

2

u/Ready-Vermicelli-300 May 02 '26

Same.... I'mma keep doing it 🤣 cuzfkher

1

u/the-furiosa-mystique May 02 '26

lol same! I now get why she added the (pin)

1

u/Wonderful_West3188 May 02 '26

J. K. Rowling: "Why is everyone saying my name wrong?!?" sobs uncontrollably

Aleister Crowley: "...First time?"

1

u/b__lumenkraft May 02 '26

Funny.

I literally laughed at her name.

1

u/lilsnatchsniffz May 02 '26

You've been saying bow-ling?!

1

u/Zeqhanis May 05 '26

Wait 'till you learn that the play Seussical makes no sense, name-wise, because Seuss actually rhymes with voice.

0

u/PeterPorker52 May 02 '26

You’re so badass for that

Wankers! Fucking embarrassing! Waste of my time…waste of my time

1

u/StockBad4879 May 02 '26

Nice to see this movie getting some love. Way underrated film.

He's just genuinely disappointed in you, that's all.

1

u/VashMM May 02 '26

What movie is it?

1

u/therealpommesfrites May 02 '26

Legend, about the Krays

4

u/RecordAbject273 May 02 '26

The fact that she wrote out how to pronounce her name is so fucking cringe I can’t even.

1

u/20dogs May 02 '26

That seems fine to me? Especially if she was less well known.

0

u/RecordAbject273 May 02 '26

She created Harry Potter 🤣 pretty sure that counts as ā€œwell knownā€ and I’ve never even read the books.

1

u/20dogs May 02 '26

Oh come on put your thinking cap on lol, the book above was signed just after the first book came out so no neither her nor Harry Potter were anywhere near as famous.

1

u/Defiant-Eagle-3288 May 02 '26

Given the context, she's probably suggesting people laughed at her name, calling her "Joanne Rolling Pin" in the past.

1

u/mickelboy182 May 02 '26

Brother how has that other comment got over 500 upvotes 😭
