humankind hiccups 😅 Well this aged like milk.

Post image

Stumbled upon this while clearing out the attic.

She visited my primary school in Edinburgh shortly after releasing TPS. The girl in front of me (my friend and train-to-school comrade) was Southeast Asian and has an incredibly elaborate sounding name. When Joanne screwed up her face when my friend gave her her name for the signature, I laughed. This is how she decided to sign my copy.

I was laughing at you, JK.

EDIT: It’s on EBay.

Based on what was written and OP's explanation, it seems like a lighthearted way to make fun of herself. Her last name rhymes with bowling.

I disagree with the position she has taken on people who are trans, but that doesn't mean that everything she has ever said was cruel and malicious.

People are complicated, and most people are a mix of good and bad. A lot of the lessons in her book were about kindness and acceptance. That doesn't make her position on people who are trans any better, but it also doesn't mean that everything she has ever done is bad or malicious.

It'd be a lot easier if people were all good or all bad, but that's not reality.

Edit: and yes, this is Reddit, so I'm ready for the downvotes to any comment suggesting that a person can be wrong on one issue and right on others, and that the world doesn't just exist in black and white.

200

u/EnumeratedArray May 02 '26

I think she's joking that her name is "rolling pin" not that it rhymes with bowling.

44

u/Excellent_Condition May 02 '26

That also makes sense. Either way, it still seems like she was trying to be lighthearted when she wrote it.

It’s probably a reference to how her last name is pronounced. Rowling rhymes with bowling = bowling pin.

808

u/cadaever May 01 '26

i think she is actually referring to a rolling pin, like the one for baking (pictured)

Would need to see more info on the book. Within first edition, you also need to know which print run/impression and if it is hard or soft cover. Looks soft cover by the image. Also need to know the overall condition of the book.

If we assume it is a soft cover, which will be a later print run, in good condition with just a generic signature they seem to go for $2000-$3000. Hard covers later print run go $3000-$6000.

On the other end of the spectrum, a signed manuscript of the philosophers stone sold for ÂŁ35,000.
In general for signed, a highly desirable inscription with the signature would be expected to increase the value by 3 to 4 times. I wouldn’t expect it to come anywhere near the value of a signed manuscript though.

So my zero-antiques-road-show-experience estimate is $7500-$10000 for a book with this inscription if it is a soft cover, up to $15,000 if it is a hardcover, up to $20,000 if it is a hardcover from very early print run.

I also went to primary school in Edinburgh, and around the time that JKR released The Tales of Beedle the Bard, we were invited for a reading of one of the short stories.

I was the only ginger lad in the class, and what else could she think to write in the first page, than "You look like a Weasely".

Needless to say, being ginger in primary school in the mid 2000s was not particularly brilliant, my name was Weasely for a good week or two afterwards.

Legit a bit worried about the lad recently. He seems so flat. :(

29

u/Far_Garbage_4052 May 02 '26

I've noticed that as well. I'm hoping it's just that he isn't putting on his "YouTuber facade" so to speak or just where he's editing less stuff out. That said I can't imagine that the vast free time he has being retired at like 30ish is helping. At the risk of sounding parasocial and arm chair psychologist, given what he's said about his mental health issues I imagine he struggles to find goals or aims at this point since he doesn't really NEED to work towards anything and that probably does a number mentally.

32

u/Kirstenly May 02 '26

Last month he put out a video where he talked about how his house was basically on the verge of total collapse for the last several months, dudes been going through it. Hes got an action plan apparently, so i expect his on-screen mood will be less "im trying to not acknowledge the sound of my roof shifting in a bad way, and my floor moving under me as i breathe... and i dont have the energy to keep up the vibes under these circumstances" in due time.

It's really true about Irish names. I'm running a dnd campaign and the party is in this feywild/material plane liminal space that is both and neither, and everything is very fantasy-Irish. I've introduced them to like, four or five key NPC's for this place so far, and with each one they've said some variation of "that's the most Irish sounding name I've ever heard." And it's like. Siobhan MacDonough and Rory Finnegan.

That's the basis for my designation lol

Technically Not Bad: Seamus Finnigan (one step better than calling him Lucky the Leprechaun)

Wow That's Pretty Bad: Cho Chang (That's two different common last names from two different Asian countries, can't even get her a real name)

Holy Shit Dude: Kingsley Shacklebolt

6

u/rysworld May 02 '26

Zhou Zhang (which is how you render that in modern pinyin, as opposed to wade-giles, which was the romanization scheme for chinese extant when the books were being written) is an incredibly common chinese name. Look it up, there are maybe literally a million Zhou Zhangs. It's another stereotypical name like Seamus Finnegan, tentamount to naming an american character something like "Jessica Smith", but not really beyond the pale.

I can offer no defense for Kingsley Shacklebolt.

6

u/BrockStar92 May 02 '26

Honestly, you’d swear this people would rather he be called Jesus Rodriguez yet still be Irish or something. Seamus Finnegan is an Irish name, it’s not absurdly stereotypical - if she were going to go “haha let’s stereotype him” the only option she could choose would be Paddy ‘O something.

I had an artist's team write me a nastygram once in a merch order accusing me of "screwing over the artists" by not adding the check-box for the dedication add-on. Something which was only possible because their site let you request a dedication without checking the box. No error. No indication you need to check the box to do a dedication. Nothing.

They also never reached out to say hey, we see you missed this, would you like us to send you a custom order for the add-on pricing, or just cancel your order?

(I'd actually checked that box, too, then clicked away from the page, came back, and refilled it, but forgot to check it the second time."

Sent the artist a note about how maybe he didn't want to be represented by people like that. He wrote me back even nastier. I trashed the item since it was no refunds and stopped supporting him through a subscription service, so he lost more than the $10 it would've netted him. 🙄

u/glenngillen May 02 '26

If we wanted to work out who this awful artist was so we didn’t inadvertently support them, what would we search for?

39

u/ncc74656m May 02 '26

It's questionable whether or not I should say. Webcomics, though.

23

u/DSG_Mycoscopic May 02 '26

Oh, well that just makes so much sense lmao

15

u/picklejinx May 02 '26

Yep. Not surprised. I sent him (Jeph Jaques) a message asking him why he didn't denounce incels reordering a comic of his (can't find it now, referred to rape) and his reply was totally shitty.

He was a dick at comic expos too.

Ahh that's so sad, my high school years coincided with the start of his webcomic and I've always liked his stuff (as you can probably guess from my username).

Seems like a lot of the webcomic creators from the mid 2000s turned out to be jerks :'(

Can you dumb this story down to a five year old level? I'm having trouble following the exchanges and what actually happened.

15

u/orreregion May 02 '26

Step 1) Team sends a mean letter alongside OP's merch order, because OP failed to check a box

Step 2) The mean letter addresses something that was a fault on their end, not OP's

Step 3) OP had in fact checked the box, but their site had not saved it

Step 4) OP sends artist a letter about their team's actions, thinking the artist might be concerned with the bad PR

Step 5) Artist sends an even meaner letter to OP

Step 6) OP stops supporting artist altogether

They ordered merchandise (given it's from a webcomic, probably some sort of book) that had the option to add a printed dedication.

The order page was not constructed correctly. Customers could access the text field to enter their desired dedication without first checking the box that would append the surcharge, essentially turning it into a trust system where you could 'steal' the dedication.

The team chose to react spitefully when it would have been more diplomatic to explain the mistake, cancel the order and offer OP the opportunity to reorder correctly.

It's neoliberalism distilled in a bottle. See a brown person - have a racist thought - project your racist thought onto a child - power trip trying to humiliate the child - preen at how morally righteous you are.

This is absolutely horrendous to do to a kid. She was the one who did a double take at this girl’s name.

Such a selfish response from her. She noticed you laughing and instead of dismissing it as unrelated to her, or realizing it was because she made a face, she instead assumed you had a similar reaction as she had to the name (negative, thinking its a weird name) and laughed. She didn't think about the fact that most kids know each other at elementary schools, or would line up with their friends. At the very least, this wouldn't likely be the FIRST time you heard her name even if you were not close. She didn't have enough empathy to realize your perspective and experience was different and instead of just letting it go, decided to make it a "learning moment." Bet she was really proud of this too.

35

u/Diedrogen May 02 '26

And even if OP was laughing at the name, Rowling also displayed open derision at the name, so she'd still be the pot calling the kettle black.

Probably thought she was an expert on kids interacting with each other after imagining them doing it in her head for years.

If I'd been given this I'd have straight up said "I wasn't laughing at [name]'s name, that's my friend" and JK would probably have lectured that I was since she's incapable of being corrected on anything. That would've put me off her books instantly.

My favorite Harry Potter adjacent fact is that when Voldemort appears in The Lego Batman Movie, he's voiced by a trans person (Suzy Eddie Izzard) lol. My favorite version.

25

u/ErasmosOrolo May 02 '26

I have not checked in on Izzard in way too long. I miss that tv show where they are a scam artist family.

TIL the original UK version was called the Philosopher’s Stone. I only knew of the Sorcerer’s stone. Which is dumb they changed it for the US version.

11

u/No_Lemon_3116 May 02 '26

They even made one version of the movie for America where they say "sorcerer's" and another for the rest of the world where they say "philosopher's."

4

u/D0wnInAlbion May 02 '26

There are a few differences between the US version and the UK version. Nothing material but they aren't the same text.

To be fair, getting a scolding as your signature dedication is pretty funny.

7

u/Master_Friendship333 May 02 '26

Okay, but that is not a bad thing though. She thought you were laughing at someone's name, so she wrote a message saying not to. She may have done some slightly odd stuff since, but that does not mean that literally everything she has ever done must be evil in some way.

I do not agree with her and I am not hugely fond of her writing, but this is just silly.

This wasn't only a dick move but also demonstrating a general lack of thought behind it.

You see a kid laughing so it must be laughing at someone's name?

If it was the kid's first time hearing a strange name, perhaps. But they're classmates. Classmates aren't meeting for the first time. They've obviously heard the name before, and unless they're giggling every single time it comes up, it makes no sense.
