Just use they. The english language has a nice way to use a gender neutral term in cases like this

people downvoting you failed their English classes, singular they had been in use since the 16th century

Yea im kinda jealous bc in dutch we dont have somrthing like that. We have hun hen but that is only recently been used for non binary people so it doesnt sound as good as they them. Also you guys have the gender neutral term sibling. E only have brother or sister. There is no gender neutral term

It can be, but it's often felt as less kind towards living things, becoming less acceptable in animals that are larger or more intelligent.

Is a gecko considered an exotic animal in a place where theyâre native? For example Iâm in the uk and raccoons are considered exotic animals here
174
u/Totallycomputername May 14 '26
There's a fair amount of vets that don't have much experience with reptiles so they may not want to take on the risk.Â

u/durizna May 15 '26
Yeah, I had plenty of budgies and lovebirds and couldnât find a vet who could really treat them in case I needed (had only one case where they could help though). Usually they only take dogs or cats.
5
u/Quasami May 15 '26
Where I live, vets are legally required to take and care for any native animals. If they can't care for it, they will take it and contact a specialist themselves.
I have mostly taken in birds, which are a bit fragile, but in my experience they will often make the determination that they aren't going to ever fully heal to be released and euthanize them.

u/Cardinal_Cat_057 May 14 '26
In the USA, every animal thats not a cat or a dog is considered an exotic animal when it comes to vet care. Other animals arent a part of the basic veterinary curriculum, so they have to make the decision to specialize in other species, and take special classes. Not many do it, its typically very hard for 'exotic' pet owners to find veterinary care. Many have to travel hours to the closest one.
Plus since this gecko was just found, its likely wild, and exotic vets dont take wild animals. You would then have to find a wildlife rescue and rehab center, and they might not even have someone on staff whos trained in reptiles. Its kind of a huge pain in the ass.
I once tried to save a squirrel and got sent om a wild goose chase. No one seemed to know what facility could actually care for it, and the few I found that could care for the squirrel were all closed!
35
u/_MissKittyKat_ May 14 '26
basically anything that isn't a cat/dog is an exotic
1
u/Tamashii-Azul May 15 '26
Pigs, cows, chickens, and horses too?
1
1
u/North-Pea-4926 May 16 '26
Our dog/cat vet did euthanasia on one of our chickens, and that was pretty unusual. Most refuse to even look at anything that is not a dog or cat.
14
9
u/Agitated-Gift1498 May 14 '26
In the veterinary world anything that isn't a dog or a cat is considered exotic and you need to find a specialty clinic that cares for those. This is because during veterinary school little to none is taught about animals that aren't dogs or cats and they also require more specialized equipment.
In order to learn that you need to specialize after becomeing DVM (Doctor of Veterinary medicine) which can be another 4-5 years of college.
4
u/RepresentativeOk2433 May 14 '26
In my experience, anything thats not a cat or dog counts as exotic, except livestock of course but they have their own vets. Some might treat small mammals like rabbits or guinea pigs or maybe birds. I had to drive 2 hours to find a vet that would treat my lizard.

u/Aromatic_Sand8126 May 15 '26
Iâm in canada and raccoons are considered an annoyance when they try to get through our trash.
2
1
May 15 '26
ah yes, because they are considered wildlife rather than domestic pets or livestock which is what non-exotic vets generally treat. it's why i can't take a raccoon to the vet in Colorado, even if i really really want to :.(
1
u/table-grapes May 15 '26
yes. theyâre classed as exotics (like rabbits for example) because they require a whole other set of education. most normal vets get the run down on cats and dogs since theyâre the most common pet. most should have a bare bones understanding of how to treat some exotics, again, like rabbits, but itâs always best to go to an exotic specific vet for cases like this.
1
u/VinCatBlessed May 15 '26
Where I'm from basically anything that isn't a dog or a cat is categorized as exotic, so basically a bunny, parrot, turtle, etc wouldn't get treated in many places.
1
1
u/JessicaMurawski May 15 '26
Even places where an animal is common it can be hard to find vets. So many vets only treat cats and dogs, and then the occasional large animal vet for livestock. Where I live raccoons are literally everywhere but if I found one that needed a vet, it would probably be almost impossible.
1
u/Insignificant_Dust85 May 15 '26
I know Iâm probably wrong by definition but from my experience with anything from a cocktail to a ball python, or even a hamster or bearded dragon. Anything not cat or dog is âexoticâ. I cant speak for farm animals though, but i know those also require specialized vets and at a higher cost
1
u/CJ-Henderson May 15 '26
To vets, anything that isn't a dog or a cat (or horse, or livestock) is classed as exotic - even rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs are classed as exotic pets in the UK!
1
u/Daug3 May 15 '26
In my area everything that's neither dog nor cat is considered an exotic pet, or if not exotic then at least unusual. Can't even take a pet rabbit to a regular neighborhood vet.
To be fair however I live in the middle of nowhere
1
u/Puzzled-Barnacle-200 May 15 '26
To vets "exotic" quite often means anything outside of cats, dogs, and livestock. Even r common mammals like rabbits, hamsters, rats and mice are often classed as exotic.
1
u/David_is_dead91 May 15 '26
An âExoticâ animal is essentially anything that isnât a dog or a cat.
1
u/LeExpiredMilk May 15 '26
I think vets in the Americas just consider anything that's not a dog or a cat an exotic animal. I'm in Puerto Rico and birds fall under exotic, so I'm sure a Gecko would too.
1
u/WhickenBicken May 15 '26
In the US, a raccoon would need to go to an exotic vet. Anything that isnât a dog or cat is considered an exotic pet. Not just exotic animals.
1
u/North-Pea-4926 May 16 '26
For vets, everything but dogs and cats are exotic. Most places wonât even look at chickens, some even refuse to do euthanasia.
1
u/Arcadethief May 16 '26
I live in France. I had a ferret named Basil (based on the Disney animated movie of 1986, The Great Mouse Detective). When I needed to take him to a veterinarian for the first time, I've discovered much to my dismay that a single one operating a hour and half away from my house would take in ferrets, turtoises, turtles, parrots and other "exotic" animals. Every other veterinarian straight up refused to take in anything else but dogs and cats.
1
u/Current_Recording907 May 16 '26
In America exotic animals are basically anything that's not a dog or a cat. Rabbits are even occasionally considered exotic animals...

It wil become an infection when it eventually pops, so yeah see the vet
239
u/Haunting_Advance_498 May 14 '26
Not a vet here, but that could be a couple things: including shedding getting stuck on there, infection or vitamin A deficiency. If heâs gonna be a pet Iâd take to the vet, if not put him outside and leave him alone
14
u/bellegi May 15 '26
yeah my snake had something similar and it was shedding that kept getting stuck. we drained it a few times and then it just went away on its own. little guy doesnât necessarily have a death sentence.

u/go_hakuna_your_tatas May 14 '26
As much as I would love for them to do this I think the reality of the situation is most people do not have the (sometimes large amount, for exotic vets) money to dish out for a random gecko they found in their home, especially with the current state most of the world is economically.
I do wish theyâd update us and at least let us know what they did with it, whether that be just releasing it outside or putting the poor creature out of its misery
(I donât even know if that last part is reasonable, I donât know how fatal/painful ect this is for it)91
u/Just-_-Wondering May 14 '26
I wouldn't recommend they update unless its a good one. I got my ass reamed by reddit for not taking a wild bird I saw in a parking lot to the vet. I was in a wheelchair & I couldn't catch a bird even if I wanted to! The internet is not nice to people who post unwell animals.
24
u/go_hakuna_your_tatas May 15 '26
Thatâs awful Iâm so sorry :(
I used to be in a lot of niche animal subreddits and Iâve definitely seen it firsthand; itâs part of the reason I donât participate in them anymore. People on Reddit can be really mean đItâs like, everyone jumps on this train of downvoting someone until their account is basically useless over one bad take or one opinion others didnât agree with and so they all jumped on downvoting them to death.
15
u/DiegesisThesis May 15 '26
Quite a lot of vets don't care for wild animals, and wildlife rescues are often overworked as it is. I say this as someone who has helped rescue a handful of birds after window strikes and such. At the end of the day, they are wild animals, and sadly most wild animals don't have a pleasant end. We can't save them all.

On two occasions Iâve had bees starting to swarm outside and crawl into the gap between my gas meter and garage wall. I had to fill the gap both times but after the first filler came out the bees came back a few years later to try the same. That time I came home to bees flying around in the garage (old holes in the drywall, so they made it through from the outside).
Literally any post about bees like this will end up with âoh just call someone and theyâll gladly take them for freeeee!â, but itâs all from a bunch of idiots who dont realize that a bee keeper isnât replacing drywall and painting after they have to cut holes in it to get a hive.
I donât want to hurt the bees, but thereâs a bee graveyard in my wall.

Oh yes. People on Reddit are so out of touch lol.
Not long ago there were Redditors who were mad at a farmer for wanting someone to butcher an old down cow. Not uncommon.
There were all sorts of takes on the situations. Some mad about:
> Presumably no vet was consulted (Iâm sure farmers have a pretty good idea on their cattleâs health and know when a vet couldnât do anything either)
> Selling the cow
> Safety of meat (Fair enough but also no one said it was for human consumption)
> The cow presumably not getting treated like family and not getting a proper burial. (Thatâs a big ass hole you gotta dig)
> The cow not being put down earlier.
> The cow being put down at all. (Someone actually wanted to take the cow to their âmotherâs farmâbecause yeah a little TLC is going to make their legs work again.)They even called the cops on the farmer lol. Nothing eventuated from that. In the end, the cow was put down. What a surprise. Iâd love to throw these types of people into situations and watch them attempt to do whatever they wanted to do and just have reality slap them in the face.

Iâve worked at a couple vet hospitals in Brisbane. Often, theyâll take care of little critters like this for free. Especially native animals, then discharge to a sanctuary or carer.

u/go_hakuna_your_tatas May 15 '26
Really? Thatâs super awesome; I never knew!
Iâm not sure where OP is, (Iâm in the USA unfortunately) but I just checked and they do it here supposedly too!!
That being said, theyâre not legally required to do it here, so depending on where you are and if youâre going to try OP, I suggest calling the animal hospitals in the area ahead of time to check! <3

Hi! Iâm sorry to give yall this update, but i found this gecko some years ago, i just took the pictures and released it outside my window. I just found the photos on my old ipad and thought that they would be fitting on this sub. When i took these photos i was at my parents house in sicily, italy, and here geckos like this are really really common, especially during the summer. Some of them live inside houses, (in my case i have a villa so they go outside and inside like nothing). I remember my mother always complaining about geckos poop on the walls, i donât think theyâre invasive species here but they are reaaally common. Sadly in Messina we donât have exotic animal rescue, or vets that would take the time to treat this specie, and i just canât spend money and time on a random gecko found in my bathroom thatâs not even my pet. I know some of you will be pissed off by this statement but itâs just the truth. On the bright side geckos in sicily are considered lucky animals and beautiful creatures so theyâre not killed by the locals. (sorry for my grammar, as you can tell itâs not my first language)
