shopping shenanigans 🛍️ The illusion of choice.
My supermarket had a twofer on shower gel, so I got 4 bottles, then the next time I was in I got another 4, then I was in another supermarket & they had other scents, so I bought 2 more. This is where it gets crazy: I then went out of my way to go to other shops searching for new scents! I'm hoping that by posting this here I can finally break my shower gel habit.

It never occurred to me to have multiple shower gels on the go at the same time I usually use one until it's finished then move on to the next one

u/_stack_underflow_ Jun 04 '26
Pro tip, keep two on stock. Then you're never without.

u/Appropriate_Top1737 Jun 04 '26
Keep 17 in stock and then you are even more never wothout.

I always get gifted bath sets for Christmas and b-days from distant family members, so I have like 15 different shower gels in my cabinet rn. I really need to do something about that

5
u/KatiMinecraf Jun 04 '26
Mostly just because you'll buy one bottle because it's cute and smells really nice, and then you go back ONE WEEK LATER AND ITS DISCONTINUED!! 😭😭

u/Karjenner4eva Jun 05 '26
I have a friend who shops deals and does all the apps. She makes money sometimes. But she'll give the stuff out as gifts. I love her gift baskets! Saves me a ton when I get one. It's especially nice around Christmas. Not worrying about TP and razors. I too used to only have one body wash at a time but she gave us several and with limited storage space, we just stuck them in the shower. A selection is nice

Same goes with sets of bed sheets especially with kids. One gets dirty, one in the wash, still have a backup to put immediately on.

Until like two weeks ago I was the same way, but then I picked up another one on a whim because it was hugely discounted (same brand I was already using). It’s kinda nice having a fresher option vs a floral scent so I can switch it up depending on my mood.
9
u/IndyDino Jun 04 '26
Have 2-3, rotate so you can still appreciate how each one smells and it's unlikely for both to run out at the same time.
5
u/DepressinglyConfused Jun 05 '26
I got one set in coconut and the other chamomile/sea kelp! It adds a little excitement to life lol
4
u/HTD-Vintage Jun 05 '26
I have 4 open currently, but one is just a "use it up instead of throwing it away" venture, and the other three are dramatically different, from different brands.

u/Equivalent-Net-6095 Jun 05 '26
I keep 2-3 kinds and bar soap in the shower. Depending on what I've done depends on the soap. Fruity girl shower wash does NOT get car fluids and grease off very well, but I like the smell.
2
u/Jacktheforkie Jun 05 '26
Same, I’ll typically have 3-4 in the cupboard/rack ready, though I use solid bars now as they’re cheaper per use
2
u/Ok-Ad4375 Jun 05 '26
I always keep 2-3 different body washes and shampoos and conditioners in my shower. It might be a myth but I grew up having the belief that after awhile your body/hair gets used to the soap you're using and stops working as well so I switch it up every few days which one I use that shower. I also like changing scents every so often, makes me feel fancier so that's another reason to keep multiple.

I might be in the minority here, but does anyone else hate the sort of... slicky feeling that shower gel leaves after you use it? I grew up using bar soap, and even some of them make me feel like an amphibian after using them. I would rather there be traction sliding a hand down my arm... to me that feels "more clean".

u/Impressive-Corner219 Jun 04 '26
In the UK the water is different depending on where you are: England has hard water, Scotland has soft water. I live in Scotland, but whenever I'm in London I prefer to use soap because gel just doesn't feel right to me.
4
u/Roq86 Jun 05 '26
Does the UK not have water softeners? Water hardness is different all over the US but it’s common to use a water softener if you have hard water in your area.
8
u/Impressive-Corner219 Jun 05 '26
I think they're seen as a luxury item in most english homes. At least the one's that I know.
5
u/Roq86 Jun 05 '26
That’s wild, I wouldn’t be able to live with hard water without one.
3
u/Impressive-Corner219 Jun 05 '26
I mean, the folk I know rent, & their landlords haven't installed them. It's been a while since I had an upper class, la-di-dah, shower in old London town.
2
u/Roq86 Jun 05 '26
I grew up in a poorer family, times where my Mom had to get food from the food pantry, our home had a water softener. I currently rent and work as an Amazon delivery driver, my place also has a water softener. I’ve just never heard it considered a luxury item here. Is it the same thing with air conditioning over there?
7
u/Impressive-Corner219 Jun 05 '26
A lot of houses have thick outer walls that trap heat/help cool so air conditioning isn't really a thing here. Also historically our climate has been mild. But that's been changing, we're having heatwaves more & more these days, so air conditioning is now becoming more of a thing.
1
u/Lvb2 Jun 06 '26
I genuinely just want a response to this, I may invoke emotions that I did not intend to, so I’m just going to apologize now, I’m sorry.
Do people in the UK believe the US is built with cardboard? In a lot of our northern states we also have well insulated houses with thick outer walls to trap heat in. A lot of places in the Midwest get extremely cold. Most of these houses are also typically not outfitted with robust central air conditioning units either as the seasons are a lot like how you’ve described yours.
In the southern US, we actually do have thinner walls that don’t retain heat, but that’s because most of the southern states have months longs periods of summer where it never drops below 90F with 80% humidity, my state (Louisiana) being one of those. That’s 32.2C, 80% humidity.
That was a lot of rambling all to say, is it a general belief that we don’t have infrastructure like that in the states? I do hope your country can figure out infrastructure for AC soon, not even in a snide way, that seems to be a genuine issue is power grid demands would be unsustainable if all of you decided to install central AC into your homes.
-2
u/Roq86 Jun 05 '26
I’ve just heard the stat that more people in the UK die from heat each year than people die from gun deaths in the US. And I’ve seen a lot of Brit’s say 26°C is hot, and it’s regularly 35°C here in the summer, and I’m in the Midwest, some areas here get hotter and for much longer. I always just assumed it was the average age of homes in the UK vs the US.

u/Admirable_Hat504 Jun 06 '26
Brits say 26C is hot bc of the humidity!! Seriously, I used to laugh when they would say that as someone who grew up in California but then I moved there and completely understood how miserable 26C in 60% humidity can be 😭 far more difficult to withstand that temp when you are dripping sweat constantly and feel smothered by the air. I can handle 40C in California any day, but it’s dry and easier to manage.
1
u/BidMediocre6892 Jun 05 '26
I want very much to have a water softener. But, I do not have that kind of adult "fun money" it is most definitely a luxury item.
1
u/braindeadzef Jun 05 '26
Can confirm it's probably a luxury item because I don't even know wtf youre talking about :( lol!
1
u/saccharinemess Jun 05 '26
as someone with hard water in the US, i also consider it a luxury item that i don't have lol
2
u/centrifuge_destroyer Jun 05 '26
If I used bar soap on my body my skin would get so dry that I would squeak more than halloumi 😅
And half a day later evething I own would be covered in dry skin flakes
3
u/Normal_Consequence20 Jun 05 '26
There is really good bar soap out there... Not all soaps dry out the skin so extremely; I've tried several because I also have that slippery feeling and I use a bar soap that feels very pleasant.

It's called Original Source. They were available in stores in my country about 10 years ago but I haven't seen them since. However, I recently ordered a second 6-pack off Amazon. My favorite is with Peppermint, it gives such a cool / tingly feeling that I haven't felt with any other shower gel.

u/Grouchy_Ad_175 Jun 04 '26
that mint one… scary stuff

u/Technical_Waltz5427 Jun 05 '26

2
u/rob_banks2905 Jun 05 '26
Right? I had it around 10 years ago and it did feel very strong, especially around private parts. I ordered it off Amazon about a year ago and it felt much more manageable

Don’t do it, OP. I managed a Lush for a million years, and I accumulated so much over two decades that I still have product left!!!!
It gets gross after a while.
5
u/lil_lychee Jun 05 '26
I used to have an addiction to Lush, and one of the employees at the store would flirt with me and give me free things so I went back even more. I was also buying online. I was watching Lush hauls on YouTube. It was definitely a hyperfixation.
I worked at a non-profit so I had no business spending that kind of money on soap and lotion. 🤦🏽
2
u/OutrageousOwls Jun 05 '26
Damn. It’s really a cult brand, like Apple.
I remember we had a couple come in every two weeks and drop anywhere from $150-300. Their largest purchase was ~$500. Not even skin or hair care; just bath bombs lol
I dunno how they went through dozens at a time. Maybe they made a soup with it.
Non-profits are awesome! Thank you for contributing your time!!!
2
u/lil_lychee Jun 05 '26
I think it’s the fact that they all look imperfect and hand made. I appreciate knowing who made my products. Over time it seems like more and more bleh ingredients were added as it became more commercialized. I also might have ADHD and just lost interest.

I always brush my teeth twice before bed. So I have 2 different flavour toothpastes. Ones for mains, ones for desert. If I’m feeling saucy I’ll have desert for mains on some nights!
I went through a phase of also having 2 toothbrushes so that each “course” of my toothbrushing experience had a differently rated hardness. I’d reserve soft for desert. The hard one was for mains.

I miss the mint one so much, I cant get in my country anymore. Mint and Lemon for hot summer showers just does wonders.

u/ninfis_8bits Jun 05 '26
I need the name of that gel! I'm from Spain. I once found a lemon-scented gel in a shop that usually stocks products from other countries; I fell in love with it and haven't been able to find it since. And over time, I forgot the name of the gel.
And while I'm at it: what other scents would you recommend?
2
u/Impressive-Corner219 Jun 05 '26
It's called Original Source. I like the raspberry & vanilla one, but they're all good.

I go all over searching for soap/shampoo/detergent products based on scent, too. But the scent I’m searching for is: unscented.

I bought my husband a bottle of the lime that I found at a Ross in Lakeland, Florida and became obsessed with it for both of us, but forgot the brand name and could never find it again. Now I find it was just a totally weird thing to have here because this is a UK thing and it’ll cost exorbitant amounts to get it to me in the US. I’m so bummed. I want to smell their other scents!
6
u/Fluffy-Koalas Jun 04 '26
Are you on the spectrum, by chance? I ask because I feel like this is something I would do... and while I haven't been diagnosed, my two kids have, so I think it's safe to say 😅

I have noticed some down votes. I sincerely apologize for offending anyone, that was certainly not my intention.

this is actually cool? "what smell am i into today? do i wanna go into the office smelling like strawberries or chemical grapefruit?" like choosing a perfume before leaving the house

u/IIRCIreadthat Jun 04 '26
You're ahead of the crowd; shampoo, conditioner and body wash are among the petroleum derived products that people are saying to stock up on because the prices are about to skyrocket.

u/Odd_Necessary1848 Jun 04 '26
Had a friend who did that with shampoo, imported cheese, Bic lighters etc. Kleptomaniac in action.

u/strwbrrymlkie Jun 04 '26
welcome to the world of smelling good 😭 i also started with shower gels. then i expanded to lotions, then body sprays, etc. I have a big collection of different smells and love to combine them. I’ll ask my boyfie “what should i smell like today?” he describes it and i create it. it’s so much fun 😭😭
