I was waiting for the 10-year streak, but it just slipped by without me noticing. I'm not native speaker

Are you two still good friends or just keeping it up for the bit?

Not op but I have 3 streaks between 1000 and 1500. I donāt talk to any of them anymore. I have 4 more streaks between 500 and 1000, still donāt talk to them. Iām not ashamed for keeping these streaks even when itās mostly half face and ceiling pictures. Sometimes a conversation will spark over a snap, and itās nice to catch up with them.

Ah yes, photos of legs and/or half a face

Or the completely black photo with nothing on it.
I never quite understood Snapchat as a social media messaging service.
50
u/Nikmido Jul 19 '26
Me neither. Tried it, it just wasn't my thing. If I want to get in touch with someone, I'll text them on other platforms or call them, and vice versa. I know you can also just text on it, but I also don't want to keep getting multiple photos and videos from multiple people every day, maybe even throughout the whole day too. That's just too much.
We discussed about Snapchat with a friend recently and for her personally, it makes her feel like she's still part of her friends' lives. Some moved to uni or just live too far for regular meet-ups, for an example. I guess it just works for some.

u/CameronsTheName Jul 19 '26
I guess I liked Snapchat when I was a young adult and sometimes I'd get to see a boobie. I used it right when it first came out for about a year or so.
I think now the images don't have a count down timer before they are "lost" to the receiptant. They only had a 5-10 second timer when the app first released, then they were no longer viewable.
Lots of people also think those photos are lost forever. They keep them on a server for many years and can be recovered. I seen a news artical a while back about how they were able to recover thousands of messages and images between two people from like 6 years prior.
2
u/Nikmido Jul 19 '26
Yeah, I think they're accessible with a warrant or something.
I saw a headline or two in the past how a police department (or maybe it was FBI or CIA I dunno) worked with Snapchat to recover "expired/deleted" snaps. Pretty sure one of the cases was about a drug dealer.

u/darkest_hour1428 Jul 20 '26
Snapchat works closely with law enforcement, especially when it comes to CSAM and catching the criminals that distribute it. Most of the police cam videos out there catching sexual predators will make a mention about Snapchat reaching out with all the evidence needed.

u/laflex Jul 19 '26
So, i talk entirely too much. Sentences and sentences. In a messenger this tends to overwhelm people so what I've learned to do to instead is send pictures.
Snapchat was the first place that really spoke to this form of communication instead. It provided me a tool to easily get it out, as well as attracted other people like me who would rather snap than talk too much as well.
Now to be fair these days I can just send a picture in any social media platform, but Snapchat was the first one to make a place where that was the norm.

u/Steezydeezy920 Jul 24 '26
Itās for the cheaters. Liars. Avoidants. Every person I knew who loved it was so full of shit and lies. Especially before the updates with read receipts and other little tell tales that started causing people to get exposed.

a Reddit streak updates even when you've not been on for consecutive days. I know because I was literally offline for a week in the middle of nowhere last month but my streak is still active and going lmao

u/Alone-Pie-7348 Jul 19 '26
my friend and i are almost at 4,000! itās definitely insane hahahah but itās really helped us keep in contact

I'm surprised that Snapchat is not shut down. I used it around 2014-2015 sometimes. Android, custom rom plus magisk. Fun times

u/bluegates15 Jul 19 '26
Is snapchat...really 10 years old?
106
u/Successful-Worth-390 Jul 19 '26
Snapchat is 15 years old
37
u/Elite_Jackalope Jul 19 '26
I graduated high school in 2015 and Snapchat was a huge asset in chasing girls the whole time I was in school, so this checks out lmao

u/DayAfterITriedtoLive Jul 19 '26

You snapped? What does that mean?

u/CameronsTheName Jul 19 '26
Snapchat is basically a messaging app where your supposed to take a photo or a short video and add some text to it, the picture was only viewable for about 10 seconds and "lost" forever.
I haven't touched it in over a decade. Originally it was used be teenagers/young adults to send nudes because the image would be deleted after it's opened.

they freaked out, lost it, went postal, raged, etc
2
u/Full-fledged-trash Jul 19 '26
All are wrong. They sent a picture through Snapchat. Use context clues

Postal the video game was great stupid fun tho, so I'm glad to see an unintentional ref to it

One day we will diagnose this as a severe mental illness
126
u/Resident-Variation21 Jul 19 '26
Iām not a fan of Snapchat, but in no world is ākeeping in contact with friendsā a severe mental illness.
-2
u/NewNiklas Jul 19 '26
You're not really keeping in contact, you're just sending photos of your leg, of the floor, of one half of your face. You just do it to don't lose your streak.
12
u/Resident-Variation21 Jul 19 '26
Iām sorry, you know what theyāre sending photos of? Are you the other friend?
Or are you just guessing/making things up? I suspect itās that latterā¦.
2
u/ElectricalRelease986 Jul 20 '26
You can also just send a picture of your meal or what you're up to and start a conversation like a normal person bro?
-6
u/cstolt1 Jul 19 '26
Sending a daily picture through Snapchat is not "keeping in contact with friends"
7
-20
u/HewSpam Jul 19 '26
Keeping contact with friends isnāt the same as feeling like you need to send them photos of yourself every single day. Thats the part that will be studied

u/LyraSnake Jul 19 '26
a mental illness of keeping in contact with friends? i have several multi year streaks and we don't have actual convos everyday, we usually do a multiple times a month. it lets you keep up in their life's in a way where it's not weird to not talk for a week and then be texting for two hours straight bc i sent a pic of their fav record or whatev
-5
u/HewSpam Jul 19 '26
Needing toĀ euphemizeĀ sending photos & videos every single day as just ākeeping in contactā kind of proves my point but go off
5
u/Rude-Grapefruit9016 Jul 19 '26
So basically no one in your life wants to hear from you everyday
1
u/HewSpam Jul 19 '26
Besides my wife that I see in person I have no interest in letting anyone know what Iām up to at every moment. I see other family and friends every week or so like a normal person
4
5
u/spicygayunicorn Jul 19 '26
You know lots of us dont have the need to send an pointless picture we actually write stuff and send stuff with a meaning
51
u/Baygulls03 Jul 19 '26
News to me having friends is a mental illnesses.

2
u/SplattyFatty_ Jul 19 '26

Not a flex itās actually weird
6
u/Nerdydirtyhurty Jul 19 '26
Some people actually do have people in their life they communicate with daily. Very normal in fact. Partners, family, close friends. The streak is literally just push a button while you're messaging and boom, another day.
-4
u/Extension_Use_1991 Jul 19 '26
You donāt think itās weird that itās not about the keeping in contact itās about the streaks ? Iāve met people that were āFriends ā through Snapchat that actually really know nothing about there friends. The only thing Iāve ever seen is used for, especially when I was younger was nudes. also Iāve also seen it caused major issues in peopleās relationships itās not a good app.
5
u/Nerdydirtyhurty Jul 19 '26
The sub is mildly interesting, he found it mildly interesting that they managed to keep that going for so long. It's really not weird at all. It's not exceptional either. It's just kinda neat.
-11
u/AWall925 Jul 19 '26
Is one of you addicted to a controlled substance? Thatās the only reason I can see for this to happen.
10
u/Ghost_Flame69 Jul 19 '26
Man I sure do love taking drugs to keep contacting my friends everyday
-4
u/AWall925 Jul 19 '26
But to not miss a day in 10 years? Even on weddings, graduations, birthdays, sick days, busy days, etc.
I suppose I just havenāt been fortunate enough to find this type of friendship.
4
u/Ghost_Flame69 Jul 19 '26
Do you not get congratulations messages or something? I get tons on birthdays. Do you not use your phone when you're sick? And what about break times during work. And an entire day can't be busy when breakfast, lunch and supper exists
0
u/AWall925 Jul 19 '26
Oh I wasnāt clear - I meant other peopleās events unrelated to the friend. Your brothers wedding or something
2
u/Decastyle Jul 19 '26
He is my brother
1
u/AWall925 Jul 19 '26
See now that is some good context. I'm guessing y'all have been estranged for the past decade?
2
u/Decastyle Jul 19 '26
Actually, we haven't we live 3 km apart and see each other every other day.
1
u/AWall925 Jul 19 '26
Oh then you didn't just realize a thing, this was planned. Its really impressive the dedication y'all had though.
2
-2
u/terpsinmybutt710 Jul 19 '26
Def just realized this 100%. Hasnāt been paying attention to the snap streak and then one day realized 365 x 10 equals 3.650, 10 years wow wow wow!!!!! Super cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh he misspelled day. I thought it might be some term or acronym. Also the joke doesnāt work well here because its an extra bit of information telling me I donāt need anything else to figure it out
5
u/Successful-Worth-390 Jul 19 '26
You dont need anything else to figure it out though.
All you need to do is look at the context.
