humankind hiccups šŸ˜… Tongue tissue after eating too much Sour Patch Kids

Post image

As title says, I ate too many sour patch kids and I believe the citric acid caused the top layer of tongue to die and peel off in this interesting pattern. No pain whatsoever throughout process. No bleeding either.
And for anyone curious, it was a small 12 oz bag I believe. I rarely ever eat candy and I forgot to brush my teeth that night so I’m assuming that’s why it happened in the first place. Picture of my tongue right afterwards somewhere in the comments

Nah. I got this from Lemonheads when I was a kid. Couldn't taste anything for like a week.

Maybe a batch with too much citric acid.

I ate an entire pound of extreme sour warheads as a kid, and couldn’t taste for a month- i still have a burn scar on the roof of my mouth from it LOL

Win/win!

When i was on chemotherapy, my mouth fell apart inside, very painful, living on ice cream might seem like a dream come true until its reality.

13

u/2Braincell2Furious Jul 21 '26

Congrats on livin’! Sometimes I eat two gallons of Tillamook ice cream a month haha. I might be a tad biased. I definitely couldn’t do a pudding diet.

u/Electrical-Bacon-81 Jul 21 '26

I was 15 at the time & thought it was not gonna be a problem.... I never wanted a damn cheeseburger & a steak so bad in my life. But, i still love ice cream (Tillamook is good stuff, and if you go to their place in Oregon, you can sample a ton of their products free).

Tillamook is good as fuck

2

u/2Braincell2Furious Jul 21 '26

I haven’t bought any other ice cream for over a year. It is indeed good as fuck.

2

u/Epic_Elite Jul 21 '26

15 year former Portland resident. Tillamook is solid for a product in the grocery store.

4

u/fantasticmrjeff Jul 21 '26

Oh no, my lobster is too buttery.

4

u/UnusualCartographer2 Jul 21 '26

Well if they couldn't taste anything then I doubt the pudding was all that great.

1

u/mamafish21 Jul 21 '26

Bland snot.

1

u/flyingmando Jul 21 '26

That's off-putting.

2

u/Severe_Owl_5116 Jul 21 '26

You should be off pudding

I was gonna say, I've eaten warheads til my tongue was bleeding but I've never had it slough off like this

21

u/The_Fink_Ployd Jul 21 '26

King sized bag of warheads throughout the course of a movie, and once they started getting only sweet I realized I melted off the sour receptors.

2

u/lesbophobia_hammer Jul 22 '26

Is that what it was šŸ˜‚

3

u/Pugasaurus_Tex Jul 21 '26

hi what the fuck are you guys doing to yourselves 😭

3

u/Dickie_downer Jul 21 '26

Having a childhood where I can’t taste for a month, what about you?

3

u/Pugasaurus_Tex Jul 21 '26

Being grateful I was too poor for that much candy šŸ˜‚

1

u/Dickie_downer Jul 21 '26

Tbf having family who can pay for the candy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, family can SUCK

3

u/Admiral_Octillery Jul 21 '26

I did the same amount and my tongue was burning but never had any layer of tissue come off my tongue

2

u/DroneRtx Jul 21 '26

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to do this

2

u/Bada__Ping Jul 21 '26

2

u/pinkleftsock Jul 21 '26

What in the holy fuck do they put in American candy?! Getting a burn scar in your mouth from eating candy is honestly mental!

2

u/Dickie_downer Jul 21 '26

Don’t shame me it was all I could feel at that age u_u

1

u/pinkleftsock Jul 22 '26

I'm not shaming you, I'm shaming the Americsn food industry.

1

u/Dickie_downer Jul 22 '26

I notice this with wintergreen lifesavers mints, some are perfect and some are WAY too minty and taste like shit and kinda hurt my mouth.

13

u/ButtonholePhotophile Jul 21 '26

Are you allergic to birch? I’m allergic to birch and this is true for me, too. I’ve always seen them as connected.Ā

3

u/ThePastryJeff Jul 22 '26

Wintergreen is very similar, structurally speaking, to aspirin (derived from birch originally)

2

u/Basicly-Inevitable Jul 21 '26

How do you feel about root beer?

2

u/ButtonholePhotophile Jul 21 '26

Depends on the brand. Some are fine. Others are not and hurt my tummy

2

u/krystalzeogas Jul 21 '26

I have absolutely no idea lol

5

u/ButtonholePhotophile Jul 21 '26

Do you get oral allergy syndrome from foods like almonds, celery, carrots, kiwi, cherries, peach, plum, and pear?Ā

5

u/krystalzeogas Jul 22 '26

OMG yes!! And apples sometimes but particularly only the skin.

2

u/brondynasty Jul 22 '26

That’d be a mild stone fruit allergy, I believe. Nectarines, plums, and apples all give me an itchy-scratchy throat for a little while. Started when I was 20. I’ll still fuck some apple slices though. Add 2, 3 peanut butter and forget šŸ¤¤šŸ¤ŒšŸ¼

2

u/krystalzeogas Jul 22 '26

That would make sense because plums are the worst culprit. I can have celery without it being too annoying, putting a TON of peanut butter on it helps.

2

u/ButtonholePhotophile Jul 22 '26

I find envy apples and cosmic crisp apples tolerable. Maybe you might, too?

1

u/krystalzeogas Jul 22 '26

I'll try to keep that in mind. Thanks

2

u/bac21 Jul 21 '26

Is mint connected to this? I have oral allergy syndrome to kiwis, aubergine, tomatoes, coleslaw and chia seeds and I've been thinking I'm allergic to my toothpaste but wasn't sure.

2

u/R-I-P_in_Peace Jul 21 '26

Gum's gotten mintier lately. Have you noticed?

2

u/calm_chowder Jul 22 '26

Frank Diddit did it.

1

u/krystalzeogas Jul 22 '26

I don't like mint gum so can't help ya there

2

u/BreakfastUnique8091 Jul 21 '26

I find the same thing. Some I can have half a bag in a day and feel nothing. Other times it not only hurts my mouth but I also get really bad acid reflux. But I’ve never had another food that’s so hit and miss this way in my life personally.

1

u/krystalzeogas Jul 22 '26

Yes, some of them give me a stomach ache!

9

u/Spaghetti_Gods Jul 21 '26

Lemonheads? I was always disappointed by the lack of sourness from those things.. tasted ok, but are just boring to me.

1

u/Informal_Ad4399 Jul 21 '26

I love eating just lemons or limes. Lemon heads are way more sweet than sour.

I used to bring a lemon to school and eat it during lunch. Then I'd count the number of involuntary puckers people would get.

5

u/tinydancer_inurhand Jul 21 '26

I have snacked on lemons my whole life and never had this issue. And I mean eat everything inside like you would an orange. Up to 5 in one sitting.

1

u/Basicly-Inevitable Jul 21 '26

Try kafir limes.

1

u/limeelsa Jul 21 '26

Wait, WHAT?! How? Why?

2

u/tinydancer_inurhand Jul 21 '26

I love it! At most my teeth got sensitive. I wonder sometimes if it is genetic cause like half my cousins and I do this and find nothing wrong with it.

1

u/limeelsa Jul 22 '26

Huh, that is really interesting!

3

u/Fit-Jury-9026 Jul 21 '26

I got the Lemonhead peel on the roof of my mouth. I gave them up after that.Ā

2

u/Sensitive_Cash_3526 Jul 21 '26

sour candies often have malic acid too. the "sour powder"

2

u/FuzzyAd9407 Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

Ive eaten pure citric acid, just sitting with a bag sticking my finger in and then liking it off. Still never had this shit happen

2

u/Basicly-Inevitable Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

Likely depends on the counter-ion, and the mix of other acids, like malic, fumaric, and tartaric.

But many of these candies are below pH 2, and that'll definitely damage your tongue, and even worse, your tooth enamel.

2

u/Katz3njamm3r Jul 21 '26

Key words here ā€œAS A KIDā€

1

u/carl0071 Jul 21 '26

I live in the UK and a super-sour candy called Toxic Waste was launched in 2003, it was sold in bright yellow plastic drums about 3 inches high and 2 inches across. The first week it was on sale at the local corner shop, my friend’s younger brother ended up in hospital with breathing difficulties after chugging an entire barrel at once.

I assume the citric acid caused his throat to close up

1

u/Humidhuman Jul 21 '26

Forget that, in sleepaway camp growing up, we would eat warheads by the Dozen, it was a rite of passage. The black warheads were where it was at, we legit burnt holes into our tongues...(times before smartphones.)

1

u/Redthemagnificent Jul 22 '26

I ate a spoon of pure citric acid (powder) in highschool for shits and giggles. Couldn't taste anything for a while. Made a show of taking a big bite out of a lemon infront of my parents lol

But I didn't have anything come off my tongue like that. Would've freaked me out
