humankind hiccups 😅 Tongue tissue after eating too much Sour Patch Kids

Post image

As title says, I ate too many sour patch kids and I believe the citric acid caused the top layer of tongue to die and peel off in this interesting pattern. No pain whatsoever throughout process. No bleeding either.
And for anyone curious, it was a small 12 oz bag I believe. I rarely ever eat candy and I forgot to brush my teeth that night so I’m assuming that’s why it happened in the first place. Picture of my tongue right afterwards somewhere in the comments

It's dried saliva and candy coating mixed with dead skin cells from the roof of the mouth and cheek (oral mucosa), molded by the texture of the tongue.

Sour candy is loaded with citric acid and malic acid, which have a very low pH (around 2 to 3—similar to lemon juice or household vinegar). When you eat a lot of it, the acid chemically irritates the top layer of mucous membrane lining your mouth, causing it to slough off quickly, much like a light skin peel.

As for why it looks like mesh: The top surface of your tongue is covered in tiny, bump-like projections called filiform papillae. - As you eat sour candy, acid, sugar, and thickened saliva settle in the tiny valleys between those papillae. - When that sticky mixture dries out (or peels off in a thin film), it preserves the negative imprint of your tongue's surface—creating that distinct honeycomb or lace-like grid.

... how the fuck much sour patch kids did you eat to cause this? Even warheads never did this

705

u/Basicly-Inevitable Jul 21 '26

Nah. I got this from Lemonheads when I was a kid. Couldn't taste anything for like a week.

Maybe a batch with too much citric acid.

336

u/Dickie_downer Jul 21 '26

I ate an entire pound of extreme sour warheads as a kid, and couldn’t taste for a month- i still have a burn scar on the roof of my mouth from it LOL

King sized bag of warheads throughout the course of a movie, and once they started getting only sweet I realized I melted off the sour receptors.

I notice this with wintergreen lifesavers mints, some are perfect and some are WAY too minty and taste like shit and kinda hurt my mouth.

Lemonheads? I was always disappointed by the lack of sourness from those things.. tasted ok, but are just boring to me.

Probably rubbed the sour coating on there tongue and pallet as they were enjoying them.

On a somewhat related note, over a decade ago, a homie and I wanted to see who could hold the most sour warheads in our mouths. The only flavor left in the bag was lemon. There were 14 of them, so we both opened 7 and threw them in.

We both lost that game... Who knew that much sour acid would literally burn your tongue?

I did something similar in my teens. I was just watching T.V. and went through an entire bag of Warheads absent mindedly.

I couldn't taste anything for at least a week. Even water. Was strange to say the least.

83

u/Jaded-Trouble3669 Jul 21 '26

I did this with Shock Tarts. Also as a teen. Killed the whole bag and couldn’t taste anything. Kind of freaked me out, never had another Shock Tart after that.

34

u/HarmlessHeresy Jul 21 '26

Yeah, definitely took a long break from Warheads after that. I still love some sour candy, but even 20 years later, Warheads just don't do it for me.

58

u/WorkerPrestigious960 Jul 21 '26

I would think water would be the last thing you are able to taste again, owing to its general lack of strong flavor

63

u/HarmlessHeresy Jul 21 '26

I mean, it was more that the entire normal "mouthfeel" of drinking water was absent. Like drinking moist air? Hard to put into words the more I think on it lol. Even the slight metallic tang from the general minerals was gone.

37

u/TegTowelie Jul 21 '26

I had this happen once in my teens and explained it as drinking air. Glad someone interpreted it as i did too lmao

I was talking to someone the other day about how weak Warheads are now compared to their original formula. Now I see why.

23

u/Celistar99 Jul 21 '26

I can imagine a lot of candy companies had lawsuits. I had a Now and Later recently and it was soft and chewy. Nothing like it was almost breaking your teeth in the 90's.

12

u/AshamedOfAmerica Jul 22 '26

I literally broke my tooth on one as a child. Actually, it yanked a tooth partially out when I tried to open my mouth and it had glued my teeth together. Was a bloody sticky mess

The tartaric acid is almost certainly more of an issue than the citric acid. I’ve eaten tons of raw lemons before and never had the same thing happen to me as happened to OP.

Yea, that's my thought. When I was growing up I loved the warheads candy. I was a stupid kid, so I'd basically eat them until the pain from those chemical burns on my mouth got too bad.

And yea, nothing ever happened close to losing skin like this

This was my first reaction. This also reminds me of when I was a teen and my first job was at a grocery store. An item came down the conveyor belt and I (vegetarian and naive) was confused at an item that was packaged like meat but looked like OP’s photo. The label said “beef tripe.” Clearly a part of a cow, but white and lacy.

Post has been reinstated, OP has proven without a doubt that the skin in the images came directly from their tongue. Any harassing of OP will result in a ban.

u/nowyouseemenowyoudo2 Jul 21 '26

Honest to god that clarification somehow makes this post even more disturbing.

How did they prove that? Do we want to know?

Be careful what you put in your mouth kids, you never know what might happen.

114

u/Chemical-Quality-186 Jul 21 '26

We (meaning me.) Definitely want to know

35

u/Jade_Blazed04 Jul 22 '26

Came here to ask for the proof

40

u/Persistent_Parkie Jul 22 '26

I am prone to geographic tongue and if it all sloughs off at once it leaves my tongue looking very inflamed and patchy, plus the places it come off are left unusually smooth.

Probably something like that.

36

u/Olivander05 Jul 22 '26

Oh op definitely showed their tongue in modmail if i had to guess lmao.
