I love that got some lead belly in the comments

Yes lead belly but it seems everyone only knows the Ram Jam cover

15

u/SpecialistAd2205 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

The Lead Belly version is also not the original. It's not even the earliest recorded version. The song is from the early 1900s, possibly earlier as the true origin is unknown.

Edit: The earliest known recording is from 1933 and features a man named Iron Head (had to Google because I couldn't remember).

u/FooFightingManiac Jul 27 '26

The same thing with ‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night’ (Nirvana) a Lead Belly cover that wasn’t the original

2

u/SpecialistAd2205 Jul 29 '26

Ooh, that I didn't know! TIL

Mostly because of the amberlamps meme lol

3

u/Vivid_Anyth4 Jul 27 '26

Then that the music video had like a 40$ budget and they used 25 of it on a bag of weed.

1

u/viciente Jul 28 '26

There’s a Tom Jones cover as well.
