While there isn't a law yet in the UK (I believe the current government is looking to introduce one for England and Wales), most supermarkets and corner shops won't sell to under 16s in the UK.

In my (16-18 year old) experience its been like this:

  1. Couldn't give a flying fuck

  2. IDs and get on with day

  3. Thinks the age is 18 and won't let 17 year old get a cheeky monster

Im 23 now and I get offended when they smack that "clearly over 25" button without hesitation

EDIT: spelling and added a lil more

23

u/SimonBlades89 Aug 18 '26

I get ID’d in Tesco occasionally, I get them to guess my age before handing my ID over to show them in thirty fucking six 🤣

12

u/Material-Net-5171 Aug 18 '26

36 was my favourite age to get IDed because it's like, if I was born in the year I actually turned 18, then I would still be of legal age by now.

u/c0tch Aug 18 '26

I got ID’d for one and I’m 40.

I was like in your heart do you honestly believe I might be under 16?

I said I don’t have ID on me and I don’t know if this is just to make my day harder but it’s fine I’ll take it as a compliment and changed it for a cold coffee.

She then said sorry it’s just protocol. I can’t believe there’s someone out there who thought I looked that young. I had my motorbike helmet in my hand as well.

3

u/chrisp5000 Aug 18 '26

48 y/o here, I got carded for booze a while back, the 16 y/o cashier did the whole transaction and carding without taking one look up at me, was weird.

2

u/NightmareJoker2 Aug 18 '26

They get prompted to perform a random check by the checkout system. In countries where your government ID is an NFC smart card (most of the EU), they may even ask you to tap it on a reader, where they then read out and store all your personal information. And a teenager can’t get past that check because it’s cryptographically secured and no document forger would have the signing key to produce their own.

Just don't shave for a few days if you got good growth. A friend of mine nearly had a full on beard at 15 and was never checked at the till. Unless you heard him talk since he still sounded like he hadn't reached puberty lol.

7

u/little_kitty123 Aug 18 '26

Would be solid advice if I wasn't 23 now and a woman

To be fair I'm 20 (and work retail so am very familiar with Challenge 25) and I definitely find it more of an inconvenience when they do ask for ID.

Technically, yes, you are meant to ID anyone who looks like they're under 25, but energy drinks are 16+. If you use a bit of common sense, I don't exactly look like I might be 15.

Plus energy drinks are a store policy thing, not law, so even in like a worst case scenario I don't think you would get in that much trouble.
An underage sale of alcohol can lead to massive fines for the company and the member of staff, and the shop can lose their alcohol licences, so I get staff being cautious with that, but that won't happen with a can of redbull.

u/anuncommontruth Aug 18 '26

I went salt and pepper in my late 20s and when I was 36, I was grabbing a 6 pack and the guy carded me.

I just looked at him blankly and simply stated, "That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me."

2

u/worm-eyed Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

I wish they'd immediately smack the clearly over 25 button, one local store with a woman known to be an asshole once asked "I'm guessing we're over 25?" while scanning monster and some other items, I said (in a joking tone because I have to at this point, baby face and short and so sick of this conversation) "23, I think every other shop in [area] has seen my ID at this point" to which she stopped dead and started berating me for not having ID with me because I'm not 25+ and demanding that I come back with ID next time. For monster. That I regularly bought from there, I used to buy alcohol from there regularly too before I got sober from it lol and there is literally 0 way she never saw or noticed me with a bottle of wine in hand because I'm very visually distinct and was a regular (and, at the time, buying alcohol every day between different newsagents out of shame of the frequency).

ETA: I also have extremely visible piercings, including a massive septum in the middle of my face, don't know what school she went to but I sure as shit could get snake bites before I left... Also have very visible scarring from two other facial piercings that I couldn't get until I was 17-18 lol.

Taurine is good, I'd even supplement it if I had infinite money. But caffeine, on the other hand, is fucking nightmare fuel. Like literally. If I (god forbid) skip a dose, I get "explosive" headaches at night that irradiate to the whole body, somehow. Not to mention the insomnia that the withdrawal would give... Caffeine is so normalized nowadays that almost nobody would even connect the two together. "Oh it must be the stress from work". Right.

3

u/Lison52 Aug 19 '26

The only reason taurine is even linked to anything bad is caffeine. No shit people have heart problems after taurine when it's always consumed with caffeine.

There’s a fuckton of caffeine and sugar in them, it’s not good for adults never mind children

115

u/StoniMohoni Aug 18 '26

Yes and I think it's a good thing! Was just surprised because I have never seen it.

In Germany ome years ago there were a few super markets who only sold it to 14+ but there is no law for it and it's not done at all anymore

Edit: added country

33

u/Ok-Mud4878 Aug 18 '26

16+ in Norway as of 2026.

11

u/mcove97 Aug 18 '26

Probably a good idea. I'd be mad if I was under 16 as Ive been drinking energy drinks since I was 13, but I'm an adult now, so age restrictions dont affect me anymore.

I do know 13 year olds still just get their siblings or older friends to buy them for them though, and some parents don't really mind buying it or giving it to their kids as they drink it them themselves.

no idea whats the official age for it in germany. all i know is that i bought a monster in a rossman at a self-checkout and the terminal paused and alerted a cashier to check me out xD

that was the day i learned that energy drinks have a minimum age now xD

3

u/StoniMohoni Aug 18 '26

They don't have one in Germany! (But some markets can ofc say no if you want to buy it) Thats why I took the picture, never saw sth like that but according to the comments it seems like it gets more and more done in europe

u/Vivi_Master268 Aug 18 '26

Croat here. Objectively speaking the current zero sugar energy drinks are much better compared to energy drinks from 15 years ago.

But I can't help but not notice the hypocrisy here. If minors aren't allowed to buy energy drinks, why are they allowed to buy coffee? One monster a day won't do anything bad to you. One coffee a day won't do anything bad to you. 5 monsters a day might kill you, especially if you're a minor and don't weigh much. 5 coffees a day might kill you, especially if you're a minor and don't weigh much. They're the same shit dude!!!

Goverments 💅Can't drink at 18 but can buy a gun and shoot up a school 🦅

And people wonder why I'm an anarchist...

6

u/8winter8 Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

Once, with a friend i checked the caffeine content of a can of monster, it came out as 3 of his cups of coffee. True they would not sum to half a liter, but neither would most people drink three coffees together.

Yet i am still of the opinion that both should be limited since they both cause addiction (caffeine and sugar). I am one of the few Europeans who do not drink coffee, just to end up with a sugar addiction (2,5l of pepsi a day on average), which today I pretty much keep under control.

3

u/Vivi_Master268 Aug 18 '26

It's just not true. I checked. The Lando Norris monster in my fridge has 160mg of caffeine. One teaspoon of instant coffee has around 100mg caffeine.

400mg a day is a safe limit for most adults

2

u/8winter8 Aug 18 '26

True, a monster can is on the 160mg, but a little cup of espresso can be around 50mg.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/MrLumie Aug 18 '26

They can both cause addiction, but only one of them actually is a concern right now.

What needs to be understood is that trying to solve something that isn't an issue may as well turn it into one. It draws attention to it, and although kids don't care much for coffee right now, this move may as well turn childhood coffee consumption a trend purely because it is not allowed.

The general wisdom to follow is don't fix that which isn't broken.

2

u/8winter8 Aug 18 '26

You are right with the attention, forbidden stuff is more enticing.

Like alcohol as a teenager, only to tone it down or drop it a decade or two later.

9

u/LonelyTAA Aug 18 '26

The difference is that coffee is not sweet. Kids don't drink 5 cups a coffe per day. There are, however, children downing multple half litle cans of monster per day. The high sugar content is also addictive which compounds the issue. Regulation is only necessary when there is an issue, so no need to regulate coffee.

2

u/Vivi_Master268 Aug 18 '26

You are right, but they ARE legally allowed to buy coffee which is most definitely ADDICTIVE. I'm speaking from experience, I've been drinking coffee since I was 14 and now can't go through my day without at least 3.

5

u/FreedomMan47 Aug 18 '26

Because to most teens coffee tasets like shit and they are not drawin to drinking 2 litres in an hour. Sweet drinks are the opposite.

Not trying to minimize the problem, but the same thing is easily achievable with putting sugar in coffee and drinking it. But, I do see the problem with it being very accessible and also promoted in front of kids. And the fact that they make it taste sweet, which is something we associate with tasty.

2

u/ScaredDiscussion1623 Aug 18 '26

It's not quite the same, energy drinks have extra stimulants like taurine, guarana, and B-vitamins with caffeine and high sugar. They do feel a lot different from just coffee with sugar. Maybe I just dont put that much sugar compared to energy drinks but still.

2

u/lesleh Aug 18 '26

it’s not the caffeine. Someone actually tested this properly, they had people drink a big energy drink and then on another day a drink with the exact same amount of caffeine in it. Same caffeine, and the energy drink still messed with the heart trace more.

Also it’s not your heart slowing down, it’s a repolarisation thing that makes arrhythmias more likely. Heart rate barely moved.

2

u/Jhud6669 Aug 18 '26

Most energy drinks nowadays are sugar free, this is mostly about caffeine. Although ironically there is no ban on coffee when coffee can have more caffeine than an energy drink, especially cold brew.

It’s only unhealthy in adults in excess, 2 and a half cand of Monster is within daily limit for people of average weight and most people stop at 1. 160mg caffeine isn’t a lot

→ More replies (2)

2

u/dev_ating Aug 18 '26

A fuckton is an exaggeration. Most European energy drinks, including Monster, contain no more than 150mg of caffeine per 500ml can. That's about as much as a double shot espresso.

If you, as an adult, don't chug one energy drink after another, don't drink them daily and refrain from drinking the version with sugar, you should be completely fine.

Energy drinks suffer from 2 kinds of taxes and regulations sort of in some countries of Europe.

Caffeine or any "energy" related substances being banned for children as there were some cases of children dying after drinking a lot of energy drinks and staying awake for too long.

Sugar is also highly taxed as a way of incentivizing not consuming as much, so basically any soft/pop/soda drinks (even 0 sugar ones) are more expensive as a result.

17

u/Mole-NLD Aug 18 '26

The sugar ones are more expensive because of tax, the 0 sugar ones are more expensive for the shareholders.

4

u/Unlucky-Durian-2336 Aug 18 '26

Depends on country. In Poland "sugar tax" on soft drinks applies to non-sugar soft drinks, because... well, because no government would skip such easy chance to tax more stuff.

It's kind of weird how monster is 18+ and it's 190mg of coffeine per 0.5l but muscle building suppliments that also have 300mg of coffeine per servings is not 18+

2

u/Ciubowski Aug 18 '26

Yeah, I know nothing about gym supplements so the chances are that those are except on purpose because they might be too niche and the lawmakers did not think to include every single type of product that contains caffeine and they only thought about the broad spectrum that is available on every corner store.

2

u/AppropriatePirate671 Aug 18 '26

Its because kids arent buying muscle suppliments

Better! Some supermarkets out here have a ban on it for kids below 14, but it isn't prohibited by law in the Netherlands.

Sadly those energy drinks are insanely popular amongst teens. I heared teens talking not only about the taste, but certain designs and brands on the cans are cool and fashionable as well.

6

u/Special-Bet1141 Aug 18 '26

Not federal law in the US, but many individual stores restrict them to 18+ as well.

Started happening after that 13yr old died and the family tried to sue the gas station for selling him a Monster energy.

Turns out the kid had already had 1 can of Monster and 3 mtn dew before buying the second

In Hungary, too. Once was asked if I was 18 for buying a white peach energy drink with 90mg of caffeine, less than an Espresso that I drink two of every morning. As an adult in my own flat who has long surpassed the delicate age of 18.

2

u/water_white__ Aug 19 '26

that law can be outsmarted pretty easily, hell has a coffee with 120mg of caffeine that anybody can buy, and that is way more caffeine than what a regular 250ml energy drink has

2

It was all over the news when they implemented it, kind of hard to miss so not sure how you don't know about the rule. It was recent. Also, yeah some kids find a way around it, just like they find their way around buying alcohol illegally, but I have seen many cashiers at the stores ask kids for ID and reject them. They even yelled at them to get out of the store. So people do follow it, just not everyone.

2

16+ in the UK with a 'think 25' policy, where you're asked for ID if you look younger than 25.

They are still being sold to kids, so yeah.. (i'm from Croatia)

4

u/SamiboyN Aug 18 '26

I work in a store and since the ban, I happily dont sell them to kids. Makes my heart warm when I ask for ID and they go, I'm not 18 yet..

I mean, we informally kept them out of our house until our youngest turned 18. We never made a big deal about it, but the kids didn’t develop caffeine habits until college.

16 in the UK/Ireland but you have to look 25 so it might as well be 25 💀

1

u/Regular-Sale-9674 Aug 18 '26

There’s been so many cases of children/teenagers dying from them

u/CactusToothBrush Aug 18 '26

I know it was a topic here in Aus for a while, I’m not sure if it ever became anything but it’s a damn good idea

1

u/MrMansaMusa Aug 18 '26

This is really good to see, I drank those in highschool and ohboy did that screw my sleep schedule up for years.

1

u/pdjgpwjdggqkfjuvsjgh Aug 18 '26

I stopped buying them cause the self service stations started requiring staff to check your age.

1

u/joskas1_flashy11 Aug 18 '26

Nah u can just take it and buy it and cashiers wont even say anything

u/Shadow_of_Moonlight1 Aug 18 '26

Same thing in Poland, not in Austria though

1

u/Competitive_Cod_7189 Aug 18 '26

I’m from Croatia and didn’t know that. I’m so glad they did that because kids these days all they do just drink those and share one vape.

1

u/Traditional_Sun8598 Aug 18 '26

Years ago I got carded at CVS for buying a pack of 5 hour energy drinks

1

u/Consistent_Act_5802 Aug 18 '26

They should focus more on vaping

1

u/PM_me_opossum_pics Aug 18 '26

And I still see my underage students drinking them daily, usually alongside their morning cig. So yeah, so much for that...

1

u/bacitinazad Aug 18 '26

Go to a Tisak Kiosk, nobody asks for ID. I mean, even if they did, I'm actually over that age right now but I commonly get mistaken for being a little younger.

2

u/MyNamesMcCoy Aug 18 '26

Not true, I've watched our local Tisak lady yell at school kids to go away when they tried to buy it. I'm sure not everyone follows the rule, but some do, so stop with these stupid comments "nObOdY.."

2

u/Obvious_Serve1741 Aug 18 '26

"Tisak lady" lol
Anyway, she could lose her job if she sell something for grown-ups to minors. Not that salary at Tisak is any good, though. Minimum wage I think....

u/Round_Ad_612 Aug 18 '26

Im a grown up now so…..

1

u/errority Aug 18 '26

It's the same in Russia. I think this should be a universal standard. The 18-year age limit didn't just pop up out of nowhere.

1

u/PlayDoughGirl Aug 18 '26

and in estonia!!!

1

u/ClownEmoji-U1F921 Aug 18 '26

These caffeine laws lack consistency. How come energy drinks are the only caffeinated drink with an age limit, while regular coffee doesn't? Coffee + sugar should result in similar potency and effects to an energy drink. What about drinks like Pepsi or CocaCola? They also contain caffeine, like 10-11mg/100ml. That's 1/3 the strength of a regular energy drink. Harder to overdose, i guess, but still habit forming and even small children drink this stuff.

1

u/SequenceofRees Aug 18 '26

Same in Romania, in supermarkets you can't even self check-out with them, you need a cashier to come and verify that you're 18+ .

Damn kids are smoking pot and dope behind the school, meanwhile I must wait minutes on end for a cashier so I can buy some silly caffeine drink.

1

u/blowfish_cro Aug 18 '26

That's a new law started just weeks ago! I think it's great, but I'd personally do something like 16+

1

u/ryder047 Aug 18 '26

Yeah but I think that the cashier would still sell it to them

1

u/AgitatedPokemon Aug 18 '26

Same in Romania

1

u/External-World6741 Aug 18 '26

You guys still have Aussie Lemonade??? Lucky

1

u/FlyBirdieBirdBird Aug 18 '26

As they should. Well done, Croatia.

1

u/stereoracle Aug 18 '26

Iirc there are some variants with less caffeine (14 mg/100 ml) that you can buy without being 18, but they contain the same amount of sugar, so it doesn't really solve the whole problem. Coffee isn't limited. And imho it could be 15+ or 16+. I definitely appreciated caffeine's help during my highschool exams

1

u/APadovanski Aug 18 '26

As they should be ;)

1

u/QuickStorm74 Aug 18 '26

It's because kids used to consume a shitload of them, so much so that some teenagers died of heart attacks caused by consuming too much energy drinks in a single day. We're talking six cans of Monster in a span of a couple of hours, followed by excessive physical activities. No wonder people protested and the government had to pull the trigger and make them 18+. Kids can still buy them at outdoor booths cause those sellers don't give a shit

1

u/Scootaloo-RD Aug 18 '26

Recently, I have been drinking a bottle almost every day😕

1

u/reverendhunter Aug 18 '26

16+ here in the UK, and rightly so.

1

u/Creative_Hope4013 Aug 18 '26

Lmao 1.89 expensive. these things can be 3 euros for normal price in Croatia

1

u/Lucky-Future3399 Aug 18 '26

In Poland too

1

u/J1mj0hns0n Aug 18 '26

Same in uk

1

u/Dertuk007 Aug 18 '26

In Hungary as well.

1

u/Difficult-Safety-480 Aug 18 '26

Hungary too. I'm a very obviously 27 year old guy and i've had my ID checked when buying a can multiple times, lol.

1

u/AdVegetable5896 Aug 18 '26

Nice 👍🏿

1

u/Far_Marionberry_9478 Aug 18 '26

Bruh in Hungary too

1

u/Advanced-Shake-8749 Aug 18 '26

Now the only thing we need is legalized weed and we have a goated country.

1

u/Alpharoll Aug 18 '26

15 in Sweden, it is however not law.

1

u/khaledjal Aug 18 '26

same here in bahrain

1

u/anileakinna Aug 18 '26

That's awesome. As they should be.

1

u/BucketsAndBrackets Aug 18 '26

Croatian here, yeah they sell those to kids still.

1

u/kumanosuke Aug 18 '26

In most countries actually

1

u/Mis3erMas4er Aug 18 '26

Thank goodness

1

u/Drunkendx Aug 18 '26

was about time, although I doubt it will accomplish much,

i live in Croatia and I lost count how often I've seen preteen kids chugging those...

1

u/lris_99 Aug 18 '26

Same in lithuania. I feel I buy more of monsters because its not as easy accessible smh lol

1

u/Mon_fire123 Aug 18 '26

Same in Hungary, people under 18 can't buy energy drinks.

1

u/Cs_Marcell Aug 18 '26

Thankfully, same in Hungary. Its extremely unhealthy and full of sugar. Imagine giving it to a kid who is already full of energy.

Thank God I never drink them.

1

u/eniakus Aug 18 '26

What is the flavor of Monster Doctor or Doctor Monster drink ?

1

u/Simsalabimson Aug 18 '26

Good!!! Now make this a EU wide law instead of this crap that comes from Brussels every week!

1

u/Dettyyellow Aug 18 '26

It's 18+ in Hungary too since last summer

1

u/dicey_job Aug 18 '26

I think this is all right.
My ADHD daughter, proudly announced that she had returned a hundred euros worth of empty energy drink cans to the store.
With one receipt.
I saw a man crumble like a wet croissant, not being sharp enough. He was emasculated right there. The cashier would realize

1

u/dicey_job Aug 18 '26

Oh yesh! The point is that kids should not have industrial amounts of sugar, caffeine and cat stimulants

→ More replies (2)

1

u/G0fraj Aug 18 '26

Its the same here in hungary

1

u/Ciumperro Aug 18 '26

1

u/Alarming_Celery3688 Aug 18 '26

1

u/veryblocky Aug 18 '26

I think it’s 16+ in the UK, though that might just be policy and not law

1

u/umotex12 Aug 18 '26

I still forget about this in Poland. Just buying my monster minding my business and then self checkout goes like THE STAFF CHECK IS NEEDED PLEASE WAIT

1

u/Neat_Scallion6367 Aug 18 '26

I'm wondering how many countries issue ID cards before needing one, to operate a vehicle. Seems some countries minimum is 15? At least according to some replies.
