humankind hiccups 😅 Accidentally asked for no matcha in my matcha Frappuccino

Post image

Thank you, kind barista for saving me from ruining my own morning with a cup of oat milk slush (it tastes exactly like what you would expect)

Update: I called the Starbucks to say thank you for not giving me an oat milk slushy and they were very kind. They are aware of the delivery app glitches and figured that was the issue for my order. If you modify your food in delivery apps, double check everything before you place the order! Or you might end up with a bag full of disappointment.

Reminded me of a scene from the movie Five Easy Pieces. Jack Nicholson's character orders a side of toast. The waitress informs him that it is not on the menu. So he orders a chicken salad sandwich and asks her to hold the butter, lettuce, mayonnaise, and the chicken.

I can’t remember what show or movie it’s from but the guy ordered lemons, water, and sugar and the waitress said “don’t you just want to order a lemonade?” And the guy said “give your free water, your free lemons, and I’ll use the free sugar.”

I had a regular who was already getting a 50% discount (firefighter) who would touch every single lemon on the self-service drink station picking out lemons to make his free lemonade. Then we'd throw away the entire bin of lemons and I'd bring him actual lemonade on refills.

Eventually the manager told us to put the lemons away when we saw this guy coming and just give him a lemonade, which actually cost us less money.

Aaand a certain percentage of people get to be complete pieces of shit even if its a minor and petty thing because our society just kinda doesn't allow anyone to be held accountable for anything anymore. Easier to move on with your day. Except shit is systematically failing because its not just one or two random weirdos but 90% of people breaking basic decency and society cant support the vast majority of people being pieces of shit.

It's possible they didn't want to pick a fight with that particular individual because he was a firefighter, you get some sort of bad publicity of denying a firefighter the free lemons you apparently provide (even for a justified reason) suddenly you lose a bunch of customers.

I can just see the comments of other entitled people justifying his entitledness simply because of the fact that "he's a firefighter."

I do agree with your general premise, but I want to challenge your 90% number. I do think you’re being misanthropic. In my experience the number has gone more from like 1-5% to 5-20%.

Still a huge jump that can break systems large and small and make life much harder for everyone, but in my experience the majority of people still want to follow social convention and do what’s prosocial (although there is a subgroup that’s given up and joined the bad behavior themselves because they think 90% of people are already doing it…).

I would agree that some highly visible areas like politics, reality TV, and many social media influencer circles have been disproportionately filled with POS, taking advantage of systems for personal gains people. So if you’re primarily observing other people’s social behavior on TV or social media vs in your in person community you’re going to get a skewed perspective.

But I know, at least in my town, there are still unsupervised farm stands. If 90% of people did the POS thing these wouldn’t exist anymore, even with cameras up. Hell, if that number rises above 10% of people who interact with the stand, (let alone of everyone who encounters it) these stands, which only function on trust, would stop being profitable or worthwhile.

Sorry but the idea of raising the alarm when this specific person comes in and then scrambling to hide the lemons is just taking me tf out 😂

It was usually a slow time and the person nearest the door (me) was also the person nearest the lemons. So it would've been oh the fire fighters are here, lemme just take this off the counter.

I had a guy talk me into a bunch of cracker packets and some butter.

New York eccentric Joe Gould was known for ordering a cup of hot water at diners and pouring ketchup into it, stirring it up to make “tomato soup.”

That entire movie is just one scene after another about how ~horrible all women are

3

u/PacificCastaway Aug 24 '26

False. I've worked at a place where paying dinner customers were flabbergasted that I couldn't put in an order for rolls and butter even though we used the rolls for sliders and had butter that was served with items from the breakfast menu (that did sell toast!).

I was once out to eat with a friend who ordered a Long Island with no sour mix and no soda. It took the waitress a moment to realize he wanted only liquor in the cup 🤣 to this day I can see her face upon realizing lol

After working next to a kitchen, you're likely to be paying for the whole chicken salad sandwich in that scenario

It's just a fun aside, why are you getting so worked up about a completely benign comment? The movie comment is definitely how a normal conversation could go in real life. "Oh this thing happened to me" "weird! It reminds me of this thing that I'm sharing to show that I'm engaged in the conversation and know what you're talking about"

I'm not going to guarantee that I'll respond, I don't really use reddit that way, but sure, I'll try to help if I can

-6

u/31rise Aug 24 '26

so you'll ignore it unless you choose not to?

3

u/sfz_broil Aug 24 '26

I'm just saying that I usually have notifications turned off and I have a life that I'm living so reddit DMs are not something at the top of my mind. I'm trying to set expectations and make it clear that I'm not saying "I'll definitely respond whenever you might message me" and instead just offering support.

Though I suppose you could argue that doing anything in the world is "choosing not to ignore it", life is really whatever you prioritize

Do you understand how comment threads work or are you just stupid? Genuinely curious.
