humankind hiccups đ Accidentally asked for no matcha in my matcha Frappuccino
Thank you, kind barista for saving me from ruining my own morning with a cup of oat milk slush (it tastes exactly like what you would expect)
Update: I called the Starbucks to say thank you for not giving me an oat milk slushy and they were very kind. They are aware of the delivery app glitches and figured that was the issue for my order. If you modify your food in delivery apps, double check everything before you place the order! Or you might end up with a bag full of disappointment.

Air? Water blended with ice ? The last few drops of hope the barista had? ( that one sounds tasty but Iâd feel bad asking for that every time ya know )

u/SweetPumpkin22 Aug 24 '26
Ex Starbucks worker of 3 yrs here , the actual base for the fraps is the milk + ice + the base we use ! Matcha at starbs is a very fine powder so we just scoop tiny little matcha spoons and put it in and blend. A frap without any flavoring is just whatever milk + ice + the blending base âŚbasically a milk slushie
21
u/DinoRoman Aug 24 '26
I worked at Starbucks too! Coffee master till 2014.
I figured as much but who would want that lol. Base milk and iceâŚ. I dunno
Donât tell anyone but I was throwing cookies and brownies into my own drinks and making chocolate whipped cream everyday.!

u/SweetPumpkin22 Aug 24 '26
No way me too ! Also a coffee master and I quit last year :p the creations me and my friends made at work were definitelyâŚinteresting. Ever had a birthday cake pop frap? Sooo good

u/S0meone_on_reddit Aug 24 '26
Whats the blending base?
5
u/SweetPumpkin22 Aug 24 '26
It's like a xyantham gum thick, clear (coffee flavored for the coffee fraps and unflavored for non cafinated fraps) sryup that makes the frap their consistency which is kinda between a milkshake and a smoothie . W/o base they are extremely chunky with ice and don't blend properly
2
u/grudginglyadmitted Aug 28 '26
If anyoneâs curious about the science, the xanthan gum is a thickener, which makes your drink feel more luxurious/substantial, and it keeps emulsions (like salad dressings or smoothies) stable longer. IIRC it isnât technically an emulsifier itself, but it is a super effective stabilizer to the point is kind of functionally an emulsifier.
IMO one of the coolest things about it is it also results in a non-newtonian fluid, but a shear thinning substance, not a shear thickening substance like oobleck. This means that at rest it is more viscous, but when shear forces (like stirring or pouring or shaking) are applied it becomes less viscous. It literally becomes thinner while itâs being poured or stirred or sucked up a straw (making all of these actions easier), while at rest it is thicker and has a stronger network to keep components from separating.

I ordered breakfast with DoorDash one morning and forgot to change the delivery address from work back to my home address and sent my breakfast to the office. I was off that day and was treating myself because I wanted to be lazy and not cook breakfast. By the time I realized my mistake it was too late to try and fix it. So it was left outside the building
I jumped into MS Teams and let my co-workers know what I did and told them its up for grabs if anyone wanted it, but the lobby was locked for the building because it was very early in the morning so the dasher left it outside the door and someone stole it before any of them could claim it.
After that I'm hyper vigilant about double checking my food/amazon orders from top to bottom before hitting submit. Double check my order, where its going, and what payment method.

starbucks baristas are always so extremely nice in my experience. iâve had at least 4 give me free coffee. one of the times my card declined and i went to go unlock it and they were like âitâs okay itâs on me!â and i was so caught off guard because there was no one behind me and it wasnât going to take long. he then made me a venti of the drink i asked for (a grande) and told me to have a good day. this is after i told him i hadnât been in a while and had a nice talk with him. i just always feel like theyâre so kind whenever we talk. like that dude just seemed happy to recommend stuff and so nice and energetic i was like holy shit. he even was excited for me to try it. good customer service fr !! this reminded me of that
edit: i wanted to tell another sweet story
this is about a bakery i was going to pick up a doordash order for. i was talking to the guy and then asked how much one of the donuts were. they were surprisingly inexpensive for how good they looked so i was definitely gonna buy one. i tell him what i want and i told him i was so excited because its my first time being here. he smiles and says i can take it for free and that he hopes i like it. then he threw in an extra donut for the customer. i was like wtf fr?? and i asked if i could tip him or something and he said no đ so this reminds me i need to go back again soon to buy some stuff and hopefully convince him to take my tip this time

It's so easy to miss that the checkboxes are for "No X" and think that you are adding X. I've definitely made that mistake before and what was going through my mind is that the app was bugging out and defaulting everything to unchecked rather than checked.

Reminded me of a scene from the movie Five Easy Pieces. Jack Nicholson's character orders a side of toast. The waitress informs him that it is not on the menu. So he orders a chicken salad sandwich and asks her to hold the butter, lettuce, mayonnaise, and the chicken.

u/Timely_Spinach_7479 Aug 24 '26
I canât remember what show or movie itâs from but the guy ordered lemons, water, and sugar and the waitress said âdonât you just want to order a lemonade?â And the guy said âgive your free water, your free lemons, and Iâll use the free sugar.â
31
u/thecravenone Aug 24 '26
I had a regular who was already getting a 50% discount (firefighter) who would touch every single lemon on the self-service drink station picking out lemons to make his free lemonade. Then we'd throw away the entire bin of lemons and I'd bring him actual lemonade on refills.
Eventually the manager told us to put the lemons away when we saw this guy coming and just give him a lemonade, which actually cost us less money.

Aaand a certain percentage of people get to be complete pieces of shit even if its a minor and petty thing because our society just kinda doesn't allow anyone to be held accountable for anything anymore. Easier to move on with your day. Except shit is systematically failing because its not just one or two random weirdos but 90% of people breaking basic decency and society cant support the vast majority of people being pieces of shit.

Customer: no, you know how some people want their coffee dark, thatâs how I want my iced latte.

Her: just do whatever you think, I donât know what Iâm ordering so I really canât even be mad.

I had to explain that a caramel latte has caramel, which is made of sugar, in it when someone asked why her caramel latte was sweet
But the weirdest Iâve encountered was someone asking for warm cold brew. We thought maybe no ice but no they wanted it heated. I was just bringing pastries out so I walked away and donât know what happened next but I think they actually warmed the cold brew
→ More replies (2)8
u/Blashtik Aug 25 '26
That's not actually that strange. Brewing a coffee cold doesn't mean it has to be served cold, just like brewing a coffee hot doesn't mean it has to be served hot. Cold brewing extracts compounds from the coffee at different ratios than hot brewing, so it will taste different.
I'm pretty sure I remember even seeing people discuss about using a steam wand to heat up their cold brew.
3
u/Spare-Half796 Aug 25 '26
Thatâs probably how they heated it. I think the most likely case is that they just wanted something like filter coffee but we only pulled shots and they didnât know what an Americano

no. one is a milk frappe . I used to make them all the time for my break when I worked at starbucks.. sometimes with chai in but usually without. it would be just a creamy ice slush but since matcha frappe has vanilla in it would be nicely sweet.

Ah i might be misremembering but at UK Starbucks 2023-24 i swear the recipe had a couple pumps of vanilla in it. Though as it was my own drink I would go ham pretty much and experiment... my fav was strawberries and cream with the dried strawberries from the acai berry cooler + strawberry sauce from rasperry ripple frappe (on the inside of the cup not in the blender)... wonder if they'd make that for me if I ever asked
can't stand the coffee now though the smell makes me sick haha

People act like knowledge of caffeinated drinks is ubiquitous, not everyone drinks or cares about the list of ingredients in various coffee/tea drinks.
Edit: this reminds me of a couple of years ago when a new employee asked me how the coffee machine worked and I said I didn't know. They were aghast, "you've been working here for years and you don't know how it works?"
I don't drink coffee, why would I care to learn how the machine works?
→ More replies (2)3
u/Few-Nebula-6546 Aug 24 '26
I don't understand what knowledge is needed here. You can easily pick up that the drink consists mainly of matcha, oat milk, and ice because matcha "is the only ingredient" and without it, the drink would just be "oat milk slush." You don't even need to know what matcha is to understand that it'll have a big impact on the flavor

Is a frappuccino just a cappuccino made with heavy cream or is it made with ice cream?
46
u/Malum_Incarnatum Aug 24 '26
Itâs essentially a catch all term for a blended drink at Starbucks I think. Some have coffee, some have only flavored syrups or powders. Think of it like a smoothie sorta? The matcha one is matcha powder, ice, milk, and vanilla syrup I think thatâs blended till smooth.
21
u/indieplants Aug 24 '26
it's made with milk/cream and ice. the ice is blended like a slush.
so it's a milk slushie with coffee, syrups, fruit or matcha or a combinationÂ
3
u/chloeismagic Aug 24 '26
Damn so its not a capuccino at all, the name is kinda confusing lol. Just a blended iced latte.
4
u/Qbr12 Aug 24 '26
The name Frappuccino is a combination of FrappĂŠ and Cappuccino. FrappĂŠ comes from the French lait frappĂŠ which means beaten milk, and is a type of milkshake. The Frappuccino therefore is a coffee milkshake like a cappuccino is a coffee and steamed milk.
Many times the drinks are made with different flavors, especially teas. A chai latte would be a latte made with chai instead of coffee, and a matcha latte would be a latte made with green tea instead of coffee. So in this case a Matcha Frappuccino is a Frappuccino made with green tea instead of coffee. And you can think of OPs mistake like ordering an iced latte, hold the coffee: Effectively just ice and milk.
3
u/indieplants Aug 24 '26
yeah, like a puppiccino is just a tiny cup of cream for a dogÂ
it used to just be a cold coffee milkshake type drink until Starbucks acquired it and made it popular and now it's just a blended coffee or cream drink lol. frappe meant milkshake at some point, merged with cappuccinoÂ
just sounded good.Â

Random fact my GF is allergic to matcha.
10
u/CaptainLazerPants Aug 24 '26
This is interesting to me because matcha is just tea leaves prepared a different way. Is she allergic to all tea? (Real tea, like green or black tea, not herbal teas which are totally different plants).
3
u/JD_tubeguy Aug 24 '26
As far as I know just matcha we discovered this on a trip to Japan last year.
6
u/hopping_otter_ears Aug 24 '26
I wonder if that means she's actually allergic to some additive in the matcha or something that was on the tools it was prepared with. It doesn't really make sense that only one preparation of green tea bothers her unless it was something that snuck into it during the preparation process
3
u/br0ck Aug 24 '26
With matcha you're ingesting the entire leaf so maybe she's allergic to some higher concentration of components of the actual leaf?
3
u/hopping_otter_ears Aug 24 '26
Something that doesn't steep out in noticeable quantities, but is in the leaf itself? Maybe so!
4
u/_eg21 Aug 24 '26
No offence just curious, but how do you âaccidentallyâ order a matcha frapp with no matcha
8
u/Malum_Incarnatum Aug 24 '26
Iâm honestly not sure. A lot of people have brought up that if you try to make modifications on delivery apps, it can completely remove all options for an item. Itâs happened once before at Wendyâs for me when I made my chicken patty spicy and every single other topping was automatically removed but I was totally unaware until the food was delivered. Ended up with chicken on bread, school cafeteria style. Pretty disappointing.
But I also could have somehow absentmindedly hit it. The world may never know.
3
u/Spare_Cauliflower917 Aug 24 '26
Nope youâre totally right. Starbucks frappucinos are known for this on the delivery app. Thereâs not even an option to remove it on the Starbucks mobile app since itâd be a completely different drink
2
u/Malum_Incarnatum Aug 24 '26

2
u/CthulhuAteMyHomework Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 26 '26
I honestly stared at it so long. But I donât think itâs a screen at Starbucks. I think they wrote the note on something and placed it with OPs order. So OP has the note resting on their keyboard.
Yeah, OP got âone free drink,â since they used the app they still paid for one. But the drink they ordered relies on matcha. So the baristas made one with matcha and one without (as OP ordered through the app). They assumed it was a mistake, tried to avoid an upset customer, and made the drink correctly just in case.
ETA: my b for responding before I was awake. Clearly.

Reminds me of the time I thought I was a comedic genius when I ordered a McDonaldâs hamburger and unselected every single ingredient just to see would happen

You got a solid staff member there. So many people wouldnât have even thought about that. I fucking love thoughtful people who just do shit because theyâve noticed something

My husband accidentally did something like this in the drive through. Tangled his words up and accidentally and ordered a latte without milk or a shaken espresso without espresso or something. I just remember the barista asking him a confused "you want a [thing] without [the thing that makes it what it is]...?" What? No, I want it decaf. Sorry bout that! đ
You could just hear them trying to parse out how to pull off what he was asking for or trying to translate what he really wanted from what he said, then the relief that it was just a messed up word

I once ordered a buffalo chicken salad online and selected all the toppings I wanted, like cheese, tomato, onion, carrot, etc. I picked up the salad, took it home, and when I opened the container, it was just buffalo chicken and lettuce. I was so mad! Then I checked the online order receipt- apparently I was selected which toppings to REMOVEâŚ

I did this years ago, not realizing that matcha was what made it green and gave it flavor! A barista explained it to me after asking for no matcha and I was like âohhhhâ. Iâm glad she didnât laugh at me!

Starbucks baristas are the best! I donât think Iâve ever had a bad experience.
I usually only go to Starbucks once a year for my yearly coffee (PSL, Iâm basic I know) but my boyfriend wanted to try the orange cream frap over the weekend so I decided Iâd try the tropical butterfly refresher (or whatever it was called, it looked pretty). I swear the barista knew that he would ask me to try mine and asked us if we wanted the second refresher they made for free. They were pretty good!

I LOVE THIS!
I had ordered a burrito bowl the other day, and I just wanted steak in it. I absolutely love their steak and it was the only way for me to get a large bowl of it.
So, I marked everything else as âNoâ, only for it to arrive with everything on it. Even on the receipt it is obvious that it says NO before every ingredient.
I can only guess they assumed it was a mistake because no one ever just asks for the steak. But assumptions are not valid. Just double check with the customer! Or do something like this lol.

I had the doordash app glitch when ordering the Chai latte and it didn't have chai default selected so they made a Chai latte without Chai...I was delivered a venti cup of milk lol.

Accidently order my mom a cheese sandwich instead of ham and cheese. Honestly don't even understand why that would be an option.

Probably because it is easy to make out of ingredients they already have, so why not add it as a choice.

as a partner i can assure you it probably wasnât your fault, there have been doordash glitches for yearsss that they wonât fix where it will remove all the main ingredients in the order until you add them back manually.

I one time accidentally ordered a pink drink with none of the pink part. It was just a giant glass of coconut milk. My barista was not so kind
I still maintain it was an app glitch but who knows đ¤ˇđ˝ââď¸
