Rapeseed is also a commonly used product with a problematic sounding name

163

u/Myrkul999 26d ago

Which is why rapeseed oil is usually sold under the trade name "canola".

68

u/Frequent_Dig1934 26d ago

Ah canola is a trade name? I figured it was an actual plant name.

77

u/Myrkul999 26d ago

Yup. IIRC, it's short for "Canadian oil, low acidity"

1

u/Accurate-Temporary73 24d ago

I never actually knew that. I knew it was a trade name.

27

u/Karcharos 26d ago

Yes. Canadian scientists successfully bred rapeseed to be edible and trademarked the name in 1979. It was mainly used for industrial purposes before then.

6

u/RevolutionaryLog3631 25d ago

that's the point they didn't use Canola cause its trademarked name and they should pay royalities for it so they used its name which is free XD

1

u/BlakeWheelersLeftNut 21d ago

It’s not trade marked rapeseed and canola are different

3

u/saltnvinegarwazere 25d ago

I don't think that's true at all, I think 'canola oil' is mostly a USA thing...Ā  My country and many others use the rapeseed name

1

u/Illustrious_Money_54 24d ago

Australia primarily uses the name canola oil too on products in store.

2

u/Greggs-the-bakers 25d ago

Not in europe, (or at least here the UK) its always rapeseed oil

47

u/groyosnolo 26d ago

RapƩ can also refer to a couple different types of smokeless tobacco.

11

u/GreedyGerbil 26d ago

And is used in a very famous swedish snus.

17

u/PraetorianSausage 26d ago

My sick brain read that as 'swedish anus' the first time around.

3

u/TantKollo 26d ago

Klart grabben ska anus-snusa!

1

u/Shished 26d ago

That too.

2

u/Frequent_Dig1934 26d ago

Also doesn't rapƩ mean something like "grated" in a language (iirc french)? There are bags of "rapƩ coconut" aka coconut shavings for sale in some places.

1

u/JavaJapes 25d ago

Yes, you’re right about that.

1

u/Pifilix 25d ago

Also a fig spread. Thanks tasting history

1

u/PockyRyu 25d ago

I've always been curious about rape tobacco. The OG insufflation method is really interesting, would honestly try once in my life

7

u/Chevaween 25d ago

Rape in italian means plural of rapa, which is a turnip 🫜

olio di canapa is rapeseed oil here

4

u/cowgod247 26d ago

We grow a lot of rape oil in Canada..

10

u/tdgarui 25d ago

Near Tisdale specifically

3

u/Unlikely_Flower_138 26d ago

What did the oil do to you?

2

u/Dark_Amygdala_ 25d ago

I went on a deep dive. They’re actually beets. I tried to translate it but it didn’t work. And I found a cooking page with a video. That’s how I found out they’re beets. And on bottom of bag in Italian it says rape rosse which means red beets 🫜

2

u/FlyingIrishmun 25d ago

A truly unfortunate name

1

u/Unlikely_Flower_138 26d ago

ā€œRapeseedā€

Thats not cool man

0

u/010rusty 26d ago

So why not ā€œseed snackā€

Of the 2 words I don’t think the first flies off the shelf

6

u/SparklyLeo_ 26d ago

Bc ppl want to know what kind it is. Thats why they refer to it as canola instead

1

u/010rusty 25d ago

So why no canola seed???šŸ˜‚

6

u/Alduin-Bane-Of-Kings 26d ago

Well you have to understand one thing:

This is Italian

The packet is written in Italian

Rape in Italian (pronounced Rah-peh) means Turnips/beetroots

4

u/ICantChooseA_Name01 26d ago

Remember not everything is English outside of the US, UK, Canada etc.

In Italy you will obviously find Italian words, Rape doesn't even exist as a term for SA, in Italy the word for SA is Stupro, Rape is meant as Beetroot in the packaging, and pronounced differently obviously.

1

u/AspleniumGhlas 25d ago

imagine expecting every single word from each and every language spoken to sound good in English to be acceptable lmao

92

u/_crisz 26d ago

At this point nobody will ever complain again about going to France and getting pain

17

u/RudeStillbar 26d ago

Wait til' you hear what they do to cheese in France !

3

u/FromUnderTheCape 26d ago

Holes?

9

u/RudeStillbar 26d ago

Grated cheese is 'fromage râpé' in French.

2

u/twinkyfemboy1234 26d ago

Hey its Sacha same guy who played Borat and the Dictator

6

u/Ok-Mud4878 26d ago

The clip is indeed from The Dictator.

3

u/jjvfyhb 26d ago

I love that actor! I wonder what's his position on the Israel Palestine conflict

2

u/Potential_One3564 25d ago

Hey it's the zionist piece of shit making zionist propaganda through humour to desentitize people about an specific culture so nobody cares if they massacre them

1

u/magos_with_a_glock 25d ago

Have you seen the movie? Sacha can be a piece of shit but I don't think the movie ever does anything racist unless you consider "one guy is the arab shepard stereotype and he's considered weird by everyone including the other arab characters" to be racist.

1

u/Potential_One3564 25d ago

You mean the movie where a jewish guy plays an arab stereotype and goes to America to be given life lessons by a stereotype of a progressive girl and then ends up murdering her because she's jewish? Yeah I vagely remember it though

1

u/magos_with_a_glock 25d ago

You got nothing from the movie. Got it.

1

u/Potential_One3564 25d ago

Yeah I'm sure Zio Baron Coen is very profound with his comedies, but I'm sure it won you over by making a shitty critique of America while his money goes to bombing arab children.

1

u/GiveUpYoureNotWorth 25d ago

This movie is so awesome

1

u/Such-Personality-648 25d ago

I used to love Sacha’s films but unfortunately he’s a Zionist

24

Oddio non gli si può dare torto se si usa l’italianissima parola ā€œsnackā€. Peraltro non c’è scritto ā€œSNACK ALLE RAPEā€, c’è scritto proprio ā€œRAPE SNACKā€ come se fosse inglese.

2

u/Environmental_Ad6305 25d ago

In Italy, "snack" is an Anglicism—a cooler way of saying *merendine* (the Italian term), though the latter carries connotations more closely linked to childhood.

1

u/Fancydudehero24 25d ago

Not really, merendine can only be used to talk about something sweet, while chips can also be snacks.

1

u/Gabstra678 25d ago

Sisi tu dici ā€œho mangiato un rape snackā€. Dai…

Ripeto, al massimo ā€œsnack alle rapeā€ sarebbe italiano.

3

u/Environmental_Ad6305 25d ago

"Snack alle Rape" doesn't sound cool in Italian.

"Rape Snack" is better in Italy—snappier and cooler.

That’s true even if it sounds bad to an English speaker. But it doesn't matter; obviously, if they market it outside Italy, they’ll change the name.

1

u/Viennve 25d ago

Rapa snack would have been 1000x better imo

1

u/el_paro 25d ago

In the meantime, I suggest you calm down and stop swearing; I’m Italian too, and I’m explaining how marketing works in our country. If you don’t understand it, that’s entirely your problem.

0

u/Gabstra678 25d ago

ā€œRape Snackā€ is used as the product name in big letters because it delivers the message quickly and it sounds ā€œcoolerā€, but it’s literally an emulation of the english language. ā€œSnackā€ is an anglicism, and chaining words one after the other to connect them does not work in italian language. Hence, if you were to refer to this product in a sentence you would say ā€œsnack alle rapeā€ rather than ā€œrape snackā€ like the package says.

Blaming the OP for making a connection with the english meaning is absurd. This is literally an italian word and an anglicism, chained together emulating the english language because it’s ā€œcoolā€ for marketing purposes.

As a mother tongue italian who’s fluent in english, I’d make the connection myself too and laugh if I saw this product.

u/Normal-Watch-9991 25d ago

2

Sì perché "snack" è un termine abbastanza comune nella lingua italiana, soprattutto nel marketing delle merendine

ƈ come dire chic o sandwich

-1

u/BitsAndBobs304 25d ago

Eh sì, al supermercato e bar è pieno di "prosciutto sandwich" e "carote chips" e "maiale pulled" /s

Hate to inform you that not only English-speaking countries use the Alphabet. In Italy "rape" means "turnip" in English, in Netherlands "rapen" means "to pick up something" in English. Same goes for the English word "bill", which in Netherlands "bil" or "billen" means ass-cheek or -cheeks. Or the English word "brave" which is a positive trait in English, in Dutch "brave" means "goody-goody" or "stick in the mud", not a positive thing I mean. Lots of other languages have the same thing, German and Scandinavian countries use the word "fahrt" as highway-exit, but most English speakers chuckle at the word. One of the most dumb sounding words in English, to me as a Dutch guy, is the word "animal husbandry", which is the English word for "veeteelt" for fellow Dutch readers to chuckle about.

3

u/anal_suffocation69 25d ago

ā€œHate to inform youā€ lol why do redditors talk like this its fucking insufferable

1

u/Ashamed_Durian_3530 25d ago

Nope, in italian "rapa" Means "turnip". Rape means " "turnips"

4

u/MikasSlime 26d ago

I like the little * that points at (*red beets) written on the bottom lol

5

u/NetworkDiligent279 26d ago

No wayy, a common italian word!

5

u/la_stregatta_luna 25d ago

RAPE is italian is the plural of TURNIP/šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹RAPA

3

u/Bright-Bumblebee-848 25d ago

Every word on there except for ,,snack" is Italian. ,,Rape rosse" means beetroot. Rapa is singular, rape plural. It's even written at the bottom. It might not be ideal marketing, but it's simply another language.

2

u/n074r0b07 26d ago

Rape is a kind of fish here in Spain. You can go to the supermarket and buy some rape.

https://www.lasirena.es/es/pescado/rape

2

u/AtlanticPortal 26d ago

That's just the Italian obsession of using English words (snack) when the equivalent exists. Rape is just the word turnips, it's the plural of rapa.

2

u/HoildaHimu 26d ago

Rape = Turnip

1

u/Feedback-Mental 25d ago

Turnips, plural.

2

u/Prudent_Payment_3877 25d ago

"Rapa" (ruh-puh) means turnip. "Rape" (ruh-pay) is plural for "rapa".

2

u/Invisiblepterosaur 25d ago

I love the little star and the note to clarify at the bottom

2

u/deejayCatnip 25d ago

This reminds me of my first day in Poland. Waiting to cross, a white van with some words on the side passes me, the one catching the eye as the biggest and clearer being 'DROGA'. Droga is the Italian word for 'drug' :)

2

u/TowaNora 25d ago

Guys, I am Italian, and I read it the English way.. you can justify it with marketing and all, but still I read it in English, so.. to me it could be reworked, and it's absolutely something the marketing team should consider, yes.

2

u/Level_Offer9639 25d ago

I love the mini expleaning text in the corner: *RAPE ROSSE Probably for preventing the confusion

2

u/MillyMiuMiu 25d ago

Damn I just noticed the double meaning.

If it can help you all sleep better, RAPE in Italian is read in a different way with RA spoke like the sane of the Egyptian Ra God, and Pe with the same initial sound of Pestilence. So it definitely sounds like you would spell it.

u/ilCANE_8 25d ago

Rape means Turnips or Beetroots, specifically plural.

ā€œRapaā€ is the singular.

1

1

u/Mikaexl 25d ago

The fact they added the asterisk with the note (that translates to: beets) at the bottom sends me. It's like they knew it sounded bad from the start

1

u/Illustrious_Land699 25d ago

The asterisk simply specifies which type of turnip

1

Yeah I know but it just made me laugh

Very unlikely, it’s an Italian snack in an Italian supermarket, where most people wouldn’t really make that association unless someone pointed it out or they happened to use English regularly enough. Probably just to specify which kind of turnip it is.
