humankind hiccups 😅 The Absolutely Massive Kidney Stone I passed yesterday

Post image

A let's say... interesting thing to witness come out of your body.

Edit to address some FAQs:

I am okay. Honestly I was only in severe pain one day.

Yes it hurt. Mostly when it was moving from the kidney to the bladder

I hydrate well at a minimum of 64 oz of water per day.

I had a full metabolic work up after my first kidney stone and the best the urologist could tell me was it's stress related.

I used a strainer, I didn't reach into the toilet.

Dimensions are roughly 15mm x 5 mm x 4.5mm at the thickest region.

I’ve never had a kidney stone. I need to know everything you’ve ever done in your life so I don’t do those things so I don’t get a kidney stone.

You can start at ages 0-5 and we’ll go from there

This is the most original way someone has ever tried to steal my identity.

Sir it is the opposite. I’m desperately trying to not be you.

It really depends on your diet and genetics. One thing to do is to hydrate a lot throughout the day. Mine was likely from eating a lot of raw spinach salads.

I think I didn't drink enough for mine. I often forget to eat and drink 🥲

Drink a gallon of water every day. Preferably with lemon juice added.

Don’t eat spinach, nuts, meat, or salt.

In other words be miserable. Got it.

I guarantee you it’s a million times less miserable than having a kidney stone.

Most stones are calcium oxalate, but some are from uric acid.

For the former, the playbook isn’t too complicated: 1. Hydrate like hell 2. Consume citrus to promote pairing of calcium with citrate (lemon water, if you want to hack this into the hydration piece) 3. Supplement with magnesium (magnesium citrate is a 2-for-1) to bind up the oxalate 4. Ironically, make sure you’re getting enough calcium 5. Don’t eat too much salt or too much oxalate (spinach, almonds, rhubarb)

Drink water. There are a lot of factors, but drink water and don't drink anything else.

Sometimes it's genetic, though, or just a quirk of someone's personal biology. I've had patients (not a doctor, just a tech) who come in over and over. One frequent flier was detailing everything he'd done with his diet and environment to reduce his stones. It was extensive, he'd done some serious research
