humankind hiccups šŸ˜… The Absolutely Massive Kidney Stone I passed yesterday

Post image

A let's say... interesting thing to witness come out of your body.

Edit to address some FAQs:

I am okay. Honestly I was only in severe pain one day.

Yes it hurt. Mostly when it was moving from the kidney to the bladder

I hydrate well at a minimum of 64 oz of water per day.

I had a full metabolic work up after my first kidney stone and the best the urologist could tell me was it's stress related.

I used a strainer, I didn't reach into the toilet.

Dimensions are roughly 15mm x 5 mm x 4.5mm at the thickest region.

Thats wild...mine was like 1/4 the size of that and i was convulsing and vomiting from the pain..cant even imagine what that felt like

Several times when i was peeing it looked like fruit punch or watery v8 juice

u/Bronxanator 10d ago

I've had a couple before this one of which I thought was big but this is at least 2.5x the size of that one. It knocked me on my ass when it was moving but surprisingly actually passing it wasn't as bad as you'd think.

105

u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 9d ago

I’ve never had a kidney stone. I need to know everything you’ve ever done in your life so I don’t do those things so I don’t get a kidney stone.

You can start at ages 0-5 and we’ll go from there

112

u/Bronxanator 9d ago

This is the most original way someone has ever tried to steal my identity.

63

u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 9d ago

Sir it is the opposite. I’m desperately trying to not be you.

It hurts like hell until 1) you get the GOOD drugs or 2) it gets into the bladder. I have to assume that yours above hurt past the bladder, too (unless you had good drugs).

Source: Have had several.

u/Bronxanator 10d ago

In other comments I mentioned the moving into the bladder was excruciating. I tend to think of the passing as the last leg of the trip.

118

u/GenesisRhapsod 10d ago

Oh yeah, it was when it was in my ureter that it hurt the most. Actually peeing it out felt like i just had a burning sensation and some slight pain

50

u/___Art_Vandelay___ 9d ago

Same, and I imagine this is the typical experience.

But after that pain of the first leg of its journey, I was absolutely terrified of what it would feel like peeing it out. Every time I went to the bathroom I was biting down on a wooden spoon handle, waiting for the worst. But when the moment came, it was practically nothing -- just a little "umph" of discomfort, a split second of blockage, and that was it.

79

u/GenesisRhapsod 9d ago

Speaking of "umph" my second kidney stone came out while nutting

https://giphy.com/gifs/l4FGA2XplwqFDcLwk

57

u/___Art_Vandelay___ 9d ago edited 9d ago

Uhhh, wow. Just wow. I can't even fathom that. I was in absolutely no state of mind to be orgasming -- every millisecond felt like I was going to piss my pants and the last thing on my mind was sex.

And I have to assume you weren't raw dogging it with someone at the time? I can't imagine shooting my kidney stone up inside my wife.

107

u/GenesisRhapsod 9d ago

I read something that said jerking off can help pass the stone and i was like "fuck it, i want this shit out of me" lo and behold i shot out a penis pearltm

Can confirm. The moving into the bladder was the worst pain I ever experienced. Wife told me I went ghost white, flop sweat, and I felt the thing move across my abdomen from right to left like an alien was crawling around inside of me. Once it hit the bladder I felt nothing. The stone itself didn’t come out for another 2.5 years I think, but when it did it wasn’t as bad as the bladder entry. When I came out it was about the size of an espresso bean…same color too. Tested it and was 100% calcium.

22

u/AyaHawkeye 9d ago

Bloody hell, I misread 'tested it' as 'tasted it'. Yet again, my dyslexia succeeds in horrifying me.

I was hospitalized twice, ive learned morphine makes me very angy if they dont give me enough to pass out 🤣 but thankfully i also get norco pills for afterwards.. first time they gave me percs and norco, took one perc and was zoiked out. Never used the rest because i hated how they made me feel

6

u/PoemSea8874 9d ago

I am allergic to Demerol (I break out in hives, learned that with my first kidney stone) but it helped with the pain. Morphine did absolutely nothing for my pain the second stone, but it did make me nauseous, so yay!

Coming down is always the worst, going out is a breeze.

25

u/No-Ring-5065 9d ago

Holy shit mine was maybe 1/5 the size of that and I thought it was killing me. It was literally as painful as unmedicated childbirth. At least I got a baby after that.

9

u/Training_Plastic_275 9d ago

I’ve had multiple kidney stones. We don’t have kids yet but every time I say ā€œwell at least if this was childbirth I’d have a child after!ā€

My husband decided to name this last kidney stone Dwayne…

in my country, stones found to be over 5mm are regarded as too big to pass naturally and therefore have some sort of procedure done. What was the justification for allowing you to pass this monster on your own?

162

u/humsterdaddy 9d ago

Probably American. I have Medullary Sponge Kidney so my kidneys are the perfect shape to constantly form stones no matter what I do but I don’t have insurance because my employer doesn’t subsidize the cost so it’s $600/mo. I passed a 7mm one earlier this year. My doctors also won’t stop calling and mailing letters to come in because I’m supposed to go every 6 months but I can’t afford to until I find a new job but the job market is horrendous right now. 😭

How are they legally charging more for preexisting conditions? That’s been banned since the ACA went into effect.

8

u/two-of-me 9d ago

You are correct. I worked at Starbucks for seven years with a preexisting condition and my premiums were the same as everyone else’s. That said, working there was miserable and I was only there for the insurance but I couldn’t take it anymore so now I work for myself and pay out of my ass for insurance from the marketplace.

I'm sorry, you PASSED THIS??? Fucking God I feel legit nauseated imagining that. Fucking fuck, I didn't even know that was possible.

Did you go to the hospital first?? Was there no attempt to try to break it down first, or talks of surgical removal?? Or was this like one of those "I didn't know I was pregnant" deals and you just excruciatingly birthed this thing in a bathroom at 2AM not even knowing it was growing in you??

I am PERPLEXED. And genuinely HORRIFIED. This is far more than mildly interesting if you truly pushed this monster out your fucking urethra. Fucking God, bro/sis.

305

u/Bronxanator 10d ago

I didn't go to the ER because I knew it was a kidney stone and knew what they'd likely do for me. I didn't suspect it was anywhere near this large so I figured I'd just take some pain killers and ride it out. I ended up passing it around lunchtime at work yesterday. I bagged it up and continued with my day.

250

u/fieryuser 9d ago

AT WORK? YOU WENT TO WORK WHILE THIS WAS TRAVELING THROUGH YOUR URETHRA? Jesus Christ. I am in enough pain just reading this I'm contemplating calling out. I really hope you do important things for humanity in your job and that you are excellently compensated.

Kidney stones are more painful than childbirth apparently

(According to a survey of women who had both)

15

u/Rowdyacorn 9d ago

No. I've had both. I've had kidney stones so big they had to go in and get them. It was a horrible pain. But I've also been on petocin for 16 hours straight in labor. I'd say they're both a terrible, all consuming pain.Ā

One is not "worse" than the other imo. I will say, the worst pain I've ever felt was when the anesthesia failed during an emergency C-section and I felt the scapel cut through all the layers to get to my uterus. Words can't describe that type of pain.

29

u/little_missHOTdice 9d ago

I’ve given birth three times and the second time, my epidural ran out. The midwife was like. ā€œNo time! Baby is coming.ā€

It was painful but nothing was as painful as my gallbladder attack. I was in so much pain I couldn’t speak and the paramedics acted like I was overreacting. Apparently, I was making up my pain because I was jealous of the attention my newborn baby was getting.

Was left for 7 hours in the hallway to ā€œteach me a lesson.ā€ They said all this out loud and in front of me.

Doctor took one look at me and was like, ā€œsurgery. Now.ā€ My husband was almost a single dad thanks to those assholes leaving me to go septic.

Worst pain ever. I’d rather give birth over and over again all day than do one second of that pain.

14

u/Bronxanator 9d ago

Damn that's terrible. I hope you were comped the treatment after threatening a malpractice suit.

12

u/n1shh 9d ago

Sounds like the hospital in my town! We now go out of town for hospital visits….

My MIL recently went 3 days post op. after having surgery (elsewhere), and she kept losing consciousness where she would stop breathing. The nurses kept asking us ā€œwhy does she keep doing that? Tell her to stop.ā€Like lady, WE ARE HERE BECAUSE SHE KEEPS LOSING CONSCIOUSNESS! We’re not the medical professionals, YOU are. Her blood sugar levels were also near coma high, for 3 days, and severely dehydrated. They made her wait in the waiting room, in a chair, for over 12 hours before she left. I took her to another hospital where she got a bed within 2 minutes of registering, they started tests within 20 minutes of us being there, and she got admitted 5 hours after us being there.

The hospital in my town is seriously horrendous. Every time we go, it’s 12+ hours wait. I’ve even gone for potential lithium OD, and I still had to wait in the waiting room chairs for 14 hours before the DR saw me. It’s crazy. Be thankful we live in Canada and it’s free doesn’t help me when I’m potentially dying. No wonder the Woman died of Sepsis in Mississauga after giving birth. They don’t take woman’s pain seriously. I’ve been in terrible pain that was worse than giving birth to my child, but then I get the eye roll because I’m over reacting. Meanwhile, the 13+ kidney stones they found, plus the kidney infection the Dr was terrified by because she’d never seen levels that high, and the severe dehydration I was going through from food poisoning all played a part in the ā€œover reactedā€ pain I was in.

8

u/uglyheadink 10d ago

I wouldn't doubt it lol. I've given birth to two kids.... If someone asked me if I wanted to do that again or push a fucking quarter sized kidney stone through my fuckin urethra, I'd take the former every time.

I've passed a kidney stone, and it was the size of a grain of sand, and that shit hurt like hell. (Not worse than birth, but absolutely miserable for sure) I literally cannot fathom one this size passed naturally. I might actually just die lol.

6

u/TheDucktapeBandit2 9d ago

I had 2, first year on the left, second one a year ltr on the right... Both times i ended up in the emergency room, and instant relief after meds kicked in was like a touch of heaven. I remember i was done babysitting and one of the "attacks" started when i walked to my car, i litterly crawled back in the house layed on the foor asking for a glass of water while i took out my pain medicine i carried with me in my pocket (i was prepared luckely.. fear of that pain does that). It took some time for the meds kicked in, and the kids where a bit confused about what was happening but their lovely attention was really nice...

It hurts like hell... Till a certain point, then the contractions wont come anymore. Bfore it enters the way out i felt really uncomfortble, but the actual going out, true the last channel, wasnt that noticeble..

The screen reader got it incorrect, i'd describe it as: The kidney stone is compared to a coin laying next to it. 25 cent coin to be precise as it says "quarter dollar". The kidney stone is about half the diameter of the coin in height, and 1/3th the width. It is a bit rectangular in shape and rough in texture.

How does one pass a kidney stone? Do you like pee and it comes out? Or is it independent of pee and works its way down? Does it take multiple attempts?

21

u/Legened255509Druss 9d ago

You pee it out. You drink a ton of water and take medication prescribed to help pass it and break it down.

Once it passes the kidneys you’ll start peeing blood. Best thing to do is drink as much water and in my case drank a shit ton of lemon juice (acid helps break it down) so that it’s not this big when you piss it out.

I was lucky in the case I drank enough I was peeing blood and brown (particles of the stone) for a few days.

Black specs too (blood clot) then on final day I had a few blood clots shoot out alongside some tiny pieces of stone that broke up in toilet bowl. The clots felt weird coming out.

Doc said that was normal and I’ll pee blood a time or two more but I’d be fine afterwards.

They were right.

Now, I make sure I drink a ton of water and lemonade regularly.

What is that pain like? sharp or dull?

Can you track/feel it progress along your ureter?

Watch out for your vitamin D levels if you're supplementing. High doses can cause hypercalcemia, which significantly increases the risk of kidney stones 🄺

This was mine. It had the decency to roll out of the way of the ureter opening during my ER visit, then pass without further trouble immediately after my appointment with the urologist like a week later.

I wasn't aware I was trying to win a competition. I just thought it was mildly interesting.
