humankind hiccups 😅 The Absolutely Massive Kidney Stone I passed yesterday

Post image

A let's say... interesting thing to witness come out of your body.

Edit to address some FAQs:

I am okay. Honestly I was only in severe pain one day.

Yes it hurt. Mostly when it was moving from the kidney to the bladder

I hydrate well at a minimum of 64 oz of water per day.

I had a full metabolic work up after my first kidney stone and the best the urologist could tell me was it's stress related.

I used a strainer, I didn't reach into the toilet.

Dimensions are roughly 15mm x 5 mm x 4.5mm at the thickest region.

"Yes it hurt. Mostly when it was moving from the kidney to the bladder"

What is that pain like? sharp or dull?

Can you track/feel it progress along your ureter?

At the best of times it's a very intense ache. A lot of people ask me to describe it and it's kinda hard because of how intense the pain is.

To both of you

Can you feel the difference between when it starts and it's about to end?

I imagine there is some relief in pain when it plops into the bladder

In my case I can tell it's starting because it'll feel like I have to poo really urgently but nothing will happen in the bathroom. From there the pain increases until I throw up a few times. This can happen between 3-5 times before it makes it's way into the bladder. Typically only 1-2 "movement events" are painful enough to shut me down. They all hurt but most can be managed with OTC pain meds.

Whenever pain has you throwing up you gotta go to the ER brother. I went to ER with 14mm that was blocking the ureter junction and after CT they told me I had hydronephrosis, kidney backs up and it can get really bad, really fast. Next time you gotta go to the hospital lol.

Any pain that makes you throw up is hospital time btw.

Yuuuuup. I have a weird pain tolerance. It's stuff like this I need to hear lol. Because I would probably ignore it until I am puking.

Same. I can’t really tell I’m in pain until there’s a functional limitation like range of motion or… inability to walk due to a fractured pelvis..,

Yeah, adding on to this any pain that makes you weak or feel lightheaded, even if only for just a moment. Obviously get someone to drive you/bring you if you can, or call an amberlamps unless you can safely get yourself over there without driving.

ESPECIALLY if that pain was caused by blunt force trauma and pray it’s not to your head

Woof. I admire your ability to pull through that pure pain that is senseless to exist.

Why can't you just pass it with 1/5 the pain? Would that change anything in the world?

Interested what country you live in. Is it America that has you to pass giant stones or other countries? I guess as the Bronxanator we know the answer.

Wait... did I pass a small kidney stone a few years ago?

I woke up feeling like I had to shit. Nothing came out, then I experienced intense pain like I got kicked in the balls, but so much worse, I curled up on the bathroom floor for a few minutes. Then the pain passed and it has never happened again... After that experience I thought that might be what giving birth must feel like.

Sounds like you might have just been constipated or has a gastrointestinal issue. Kidney stones, even small cause lasting pain for days or even weeks at a time.

Yeah, the puke is how I know. Time to head to the ER.

I went to the hospital not knowing what was happening. The doctor identified the stone in the tube that leaves my kidney. They gave me an option to pass on my own or have them blast it into pieces. I had them blast it. They put me out with anesthesia for that. The pain from the stone was truly unbearable, black out level for me. OP is a lot braver than me 🫡

Edited for clarity

2

u/MarkyGalore 9d ago

Was the pain from them blasting them into tiny pieces?

Oh dear. I never want to make such a choice.

2

u/tommylikewingys 9d ago

Sorry I was unclear! The pain was from the stone. They put me under for the blasting. I woke up a little sore but exponentially better.

2

u/human_espresso10 9d ago

They put you under for the procedure. The worst pain of that is usually the stent after. Still eons better than waiting 5 days for a stone to pass that wouldn't

1

u/MarkyGalore 9d ago

I never knew the stent hurt. I thought they were like those cows with an opening or a colostomy bag. Apparently it always causes discomfort.

Depends what kind of treatment they are referring to, but I had lithotripsy which is concentrated ultrasound designed to break the stone up, this was while in my kidney, which happened to be sitting behind my ribcage.

I was awake for this and it started fine, then suddenly i felt like I was going to pass out, the reckon the stone shattered and some went straight to the ureter (which is what causes most of the pain as that is the smallest of the tubes they have to pass through)

Tbh still not as bad as the initial pain from the first stone going on the move, had to have 2 doses of morphine to ease the pain

1

u/19toofart 9d ago

No, reread it. The pain was from the stone, they were sedated for the procedure (percutaneous nephrolithotomy/lithotripsy)

In my experience little relief, it then begins circling the drain and life is grim. The journey from bladder to glans was painless, sort of pebble in a hose pipe rattle. Tweezers may be needed for final extraction.

ADVICE - STAY HYDRATED!

2

u/GP7onRICE 9d ago

I always tell people that it goes beyond pain and turns into feeling like dread.

The worst moments are beyond pain because it will already be triggering your pain receptors at 100% but you feel it keep getting worse somehow and the feeling begins to change from pain to an intense feeling of dread since the pain can’t get any worse.

Sometimes it legitimately feels like it would be a good idea to take a knife and start cutting it out.

Honestly, as flawed as the NHS can be (99% due to poor funding and a shit government), I would be dead without it. As would my brother and many others I know. It is an invaluable resource that I cannot praise enough and I always wish the USA had the same. I have many friends over there and I worry for you all!

It’s that constant flesh sweat mixed with anxiety and and a whole mess of never being comfortable.
In short, kidney stones are horrible.
No way in hell I could have dealt with a 15 mm pretty sure mine was 4 mm didn’t even realized I passed it but I was nauseous for days
But yes from kidney to bladder is a nightmare

1

u/Famous_Low_604 8d ago

I had a 5.2mm one and I have had many different forms of pain.

None of them have touched how awful a kidney stone is. I can think about that area of my body and there is a lingering phantom pain sensation there. I think the best explanation is that from women who have had kidney stones and childbirth, they have all said that kidney stones are more painful

1

u/Kratosballsweat 9d ago

When i had mine the best way i could describe it is that i had to take the absolute worst shit of my life. Like think of that one time you had to drop a duece so bad that it physically hurt you intensely to hold it in and then times that by a 100 lol.

1

u/Medical_Birthday2893 9d ago

I remember when mine moved, felt like I got kicked in the balls out of nowhere and radiated. I threw up.

How did you pass that?! Mine was much much smaller. You’re tough af

1

u/Bronxanator 9d ago

Honestly I don't know. I know it's like barely possible to pass one this size but somehow I managed
