electrifying energy ⚡️ Man loses melanin in his arm after being electrocuted
This man was electrocuted by a power line, and not only miraculously survived, but had a tattoo shape-up as well haha
Not my photo/OC - I saw it on IG (@ilovegerm)

That's extremely shitty going through this but I'm ngl that's an extremely cool visual effect with the tattoo

u/i_was_axiom 3d ago
Shout out to that artist. Lines so crisp they don't just survive after a lightning strike, they thrive after a lighting strike.
182
u/LolaAucoin 3d ago
He probably had no idea how well done that tattoo actually is!
38
u/Frazzledragon 3d ago
Imagine how funny it would be if he didn't know he had a tattoo in the first place until after the strike.
11
u/Winter_Difference396 3d ago
This actually happens with a lot of burns! When the first few layers of skin are removed, the tattoo underneath is still very intact and looks a lot sharper. Though i do agree, wonderful art!!!

Kinda makes the tats look better
Edit: because peeled skin freshened it up, not because white skin, just covering bases with reddits immediate calling everything racist
115
u/cms86 4d ago
It's not racist, white skin shows contrast a lot better than all skin tones. It sucks being brown sometimes especially when you love black and grey ink :(
59
u/wooden-fuk-boi 4d ago
God damnit bro youre breaking my heart right now !!! I fucking love art and making black ink drawings is my business. . . Lol. . .here take my white skin god damnit
8
44
u/TheCh0rt 4d ago
I think that too, the juxtaposition looks really cool, especially with the ink refresh. Hell of a story that guy will have
52
u/DeniLox 4d ago
You’re not racist, but if you‘ve ever watched Ink Master, you’d see that people did think that darker skin = worse looking tattoos. When the contestants were able to choose which tattoo artist got which “canvas”, they always intentionally gave the dark-skinned people to those who they disliked because the tattoo wouldn’t be as visible.
43
u/wooden-fuk-boi 4d ago
Yeahhh. . .I've always hated that for darker skin people, like I wish their was a dope ass white ink or somwthing that would just make that shit pop
50
u/DogFaceLady 3d ago
There are tattoo artists who specialize in colorful tattoos for people with more melanin! Their art is gorgeous.
It's unfortunate though, that this is a specialized thing. How to tattoo all skin types, (and how to do it well) should be covered during their apprenticeship. It is getting better, just wish it was already a known accepted thing
6
u/IdioticSandwic 3d ago
White would probably be dope but would probably turn green a few years down the line like black ink. Imo bright green would be dope
16
30
u/momo76g 4d ago
Lol my brain is fried because I knew exactly what you meant and thought people will think its racist somehow before reading your edit.
It has more contrast and I can dicern better the tattoo so I agree.

u/wooden-fuk-boi 4d ago
I guess r/mildyinteresting actually has normal people its nice lol. . .good lord most subs are fucking out there

That’s kinda cool!
The melanocytes were fried and are incapable of producing melanin. Depending on the current tho it could be temporary or permanent if the damage couldn’t be repaired and the melanocytes died.
259
u/DontTreadOnTrees 4d ago
It looks more like the layer that contains the melanin was fried off and we're seeing a deeper layer of skin that's not normally exposed so contains no pigment
74
u/flying_dogs_bc 3d ago
makes sense given how fresh the tattoos look. Poor guy that must be painful! I wonder if he needs the arm bandaged for a couple of weeks? will it blister?
31
u/DontTreadOnTrees 3d ago
Others commented on how he was smiIing despite the circumstances, and people pointed out hospital meds. I imagine it would need a wet dressing. Nad, but blistering would probs depend on how many layers deep the burn goes.

Electrocution means he ded. But i dont make the rules. . .
14
u/starbycrit 3d ago
Electrocution doesn’t mean dead, it means injured by electricity. Even then, it’s the contact that is the electrocution and the injury is more of a byproduct bc not every electric shock ends with injuryI was wrong, it is a combination of “electricity” and “execution” to mean death! And “electric shock” is the term used to describe the contact with electricity, while electrocution is the fatality of electric shock

I had a teacher who dyed his hair black who said his hair turned white when he was hit by lightning and thats why he dyes it. I didnt believe him but maybe he was telling the truth.
50
u/DogFaceLady 3d ago
I also had a teacher who was struck by lightning. They were also missing parts of two fingers from a car accident. Played piano excellently
21
25
u/Immatt55 4d ago edited 3d ago
I guess it's technically possible as hair color is dictated by the same mechanism but I feel like
surviving a lightning bolt to the dome is much less likely.Edit: I've vastly overestimated how deadly lightning is.
29
u/groyosnolo 4d ago
I was very surprised to learn being struck by lightning has a 90% survival rate.
30
u/Mermaidoysters 3d ago
I had a neighbor who got hit by lightning through her Publix shopping cart.
She was bedridden with horrific migraines for all the years I was there.
My Grandfather was hit by lightning. He had his hand on the huge tire to his tractor, & was wearing rubber boots. He was ok!
These stories don’t make the news. It’s more common than we think.

This might be a stupid question, but why didn’t his tattoo get affected but his melanin did?
199
u/Booty_Shakin 4d ago
Im guessing melanin being a biological pigment has something to do with it as well as where it is in the skin.
29
20
30
u/Sea_Prep_Tidal_26 4d ago edited 3d ago
Not an expert but melanin is a metabolically replicated and replaceable as you shed skin cells naturally. Tattoos use an inert dye that is more or less permanent.
I suspect that the electrocution affected the cells function to produce sufficient melanin (it looks like his arm is still producing ~20% melanin - it is not albinism).
This may be temporary or permanent.
A dermatologist might be able to shed more
norlight (pun intended) on the topic.6

Electrocution means death. Was was just shocked. And pretty severely. This will only be the beginning of a long recovery. He will most likely have 2nd or 3rd degree burns.

Wow that's fuckin cool. I'm glad he survived.
You typically say someone was shocked if they didn't die. If you've been electrocuted it means you're dead. People get shocked and go home, people get electrocuted and they're fried, cooked, or blown up.

Fun fact, none of us here have been electrocuted, nor the person in this picture. Electrocution means death. Shocked, however doesn’t mean death.
3
u/FauxFeather 3d ago
This is what happens when you don't listen to your mom, and she says she'll slap the black off.... you know the rest
3
u/Metalhead1686 3d ago
I have this going on with one part of my face. I hide it with a beard. When I shave, it’s very visible.
3
u/TheImmoralCookie 3d ago
Does this mean we could technically find a way to electric therapy the melanin out of someone in a similar way women use tanning beds?
3
u/iltopop 3d ago
This is extremely pedantic and doesn't matter at all but I can't help but point out that TECHNICALLY he was shocked, electrocution is a cause of death and by the strictest technical definition you cannot be electrocuted and live.
But the fact that it shocked his arm was probably why he lived since based on the pattern none of the current was able to reach and mess with his heart.

3
u/Friedchicken96 3d ago
As someone who also works with electricity 👀 holy crap he was electrocuted while using his left hand?! 😭 That sooooo fucking dangerous! I was warned about touching live wires with the left hand cause it's closer to the heart should the current travel up your arm.
Give this man a big hug!!! Wishing him an easy recovery ❤️
Also, the impression left looks sick combined with the tats 👍
