My wife has taken over my mothers ā€œno (exotic) pets in the houseā€ policyĀ

I'm glad we agree on our love of crustaceans, however as I'm transgender I'm afraid you might not like me very much. :/ I hope you're cool with us and not someone that wants everyone to detrans. 🩷

23

u/tiedyesmiley 2d ago

May I ask for help to understand, why the shared love for crustaceans, has anything to do with being transgender?

16

u/moonlitkiwier 2d ago

u/tiedyesmiley 2d ago

Got it, understood.

11

I adore you. I'm only waving my little flag. I'm not one of the crazy people-trust me. Only made the username because I'm too scared to openly comment and converse, or talk about it online, it's my one way of existing and communicating it. I'm stupid.

I'm just a soul whose intentions are good, please don't let me be misunderstoodĀ

8

u/moonlitkiwier 2d ago

Good, i support you being who you're supposed to be. 🩷

6

u/echo_echo_123 2d ago

Dunno why you’re getting downvoted. You explained that it’s because of the replier’s username and that makes sense

Maybe edit your initial comment for clarity?

10

u/moonlitkiwier 2d ago

I don't care about reddit points, my comment was left for one person and they know why. If they want to respond, it's entirely up to them. :)

Self victimization like this is kinda the reason why even us, the "LGB" of LGBTQ don't really like to be grouped together with the "TQ". I have nothing against trans, but behavior like this is just weird. Live your life as you see fit, be yourself confidently and don't let anyone change you. Just don't wallow in self pity where you think you'll have to victimize yourself over everything. Even positive comments about love for the same subject of interest that have absolutely nothing to do with your gender identity.

Edit. Other commenters pointed out the name of the commenter which caused the self victimization, so I guess it would be somewhat understandable reaction

7

u/nozelt 2d ago

Even your edit is still blaming them for ā€œself victimizationā€ while you walk your original statement back

So uhhhhh maybe you ought to look in the mirror a bit, a normal person would apologize for your attack on the ā€œTQā€ part of ā€œyourā€ group. Not double down in the edit even after you realized you’re in the wrong.

Ironically, you being mean and nasty about them victimizing themselves makes them legit victims šŸ˜‚ screw your head back on please.

5

u/moonlitkiwier 2d ago

Oddly enough, they also framed it as other commenters when afaik I'm the only one that pointed that out. I'm really not sure why they're still trying to make me look bad, i really didn't mean it that way 😭

1

u/nozelt 1d ago

šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Like you said you don’t care about karma so oh well. At least you know some people here support you.

I’m sure some people in every group can habitually victimize themselves, idk why they’re so upset about your group in peticular lol

I didn't realize lobsters are technically immortal. They just die from exhaustion during sheds when they get oldĀ

11

u/The_Tooter_Snooter 2d ago

I’m imagining one of those dumb diamond commercials except it’s all lobsters with the tagline ā€œlobsters are foreverā€Ā

8

u/ComprehendReading 2d ago

Every kiss begins with crustacean.

57

u/northcascadekittycat 2d ago

Do you ever take him out of the tank when you see the mailman coming so you can open the door right as he was about to slip the letter through the mail slot and have your lobster grab the envelope instead?

9

u/nopuse 2d ago

I'd totally follow a channel that made videos like this. Imagine the guy in front of you in the checkout line pulls a lobster holding cash out of his pocket to pay. Or, using a lobster to tip the waiter/waitress. Or, claim it's an emotional support lobster and take it places on a leash.

6

u/SeveranceVul 2d ago

This guy got his channel famous with a lobster named Leo. check it out.

https://www.youtube.com/@Bradybrandwood

3

u/nopuse 2d ago

I love that channel, and it was so sad when Leon passed away. RIP Leon.

2

u/SeveranceVul 2d ago

I hope Leon II is just molting right now.

8

u/Silent_Barnacle6776 2d ago

Omg I'm rotfl at this sight

2

u/BeyondTheBees 2d ago

Please, OP. Please do this. šŸ™šŸ¼

15

u/LordFuggleButt 2d ago

Aren't they like immortal or something?

19

u/Cloud_N0ne 2d ago

No.

People love to say they’re immortal if they’re able to keep molting, but clearly they eventually grow too old to properly molt.

It’s like saying humans would be immortal if it weren’t for our organs failing.

9

u/Puzzleheaded-Ad5396 1d ago

Its not that they get too old and their body starts to break down like most animals, they get to a point where they are too big and their shell is so heavy that they aren't physically strong enough to get out of their old shell before the new one grows in causing infections and other health problems which then lead to death.

Crocodiles are another animal that never stop growing and only die because they become too heavy to sustain themselves.

3

u/Cloud_N0ne 1d ago

Yes. Like I said. They eventually get to a point where things fail, so they’re clearly not immortal.

2

u/Desperate_Damage4632 2d ago

Right but they get like 300 years

8

u/gundam2017 2d ago

Technically yes!Ā

10

u/Aggravating-HoldUp87 2d ago

Lobster uppies

11

u/rusty5545 2d ago

As long as you can keep the tank frigid 24/7 they do great in captivity. Yours looks very handsome op

21

u/gundam2017 2d ago

Thank you! She is a very happy girl and I love her so much

-13

u/LegitimateStudio3702 2d ago

Delicious

12

u/gundam2017 2d ago

Imagine someone saying that about your dog or cat. Like i get that lobsters are food, but come on

9

u/_gay_space_moth_ 2d ago

Your lobster looks absolutely lovely šŸ’•

Some people really are something else though… :(

2

u/NikNakskes 1d ago

My father wondered what an animal would taste like when we went to the zoo.

It is a joke, but it is one that grows old really quickly.

9

u/Warm_Candidate_9837 2d ago

Genuine question, when you need to take them out of the tank to clean it and such.. Is there like, a tool you can use to band their claws? Or do you like, put them in a temporary bin from a bucket or something and hope it dosent get angry

12

u/JumpScareInDaWoods 1d ago

Not OP but I have 15 years of lobster handling experience and have only been pinched twice. You grab them around their back (behind the head and above the tail). They will rear their claws up but can't reach your hand. As far as where you put them during cleaning, they are fine out of water for periods of time as long as they remain cold. A bucket of their water works too as long as that stays fairly cold, but without any aeration they won't like it forever.

5

u/gundam2017 1d ago

We dont remove her ever. when it's time to upgrade her tank, then I'll figure out how not to lose a finger

2

u/dividezero 1d ago

when i had fish, i would clean it around them. you partially drain the enclosure. this was what i learned in books back then. it might not be best practice anymore. i have no idea

3

u/Warm_Candidate_9837 1d ago

Yeah when i had fish when i was little i cleaned around them too.. Im just not sure id wanna try it with a lobster incase it gets upset

1

u/dividezero 1d ago

had a cichlid and he was always upset! 🤣

16

u/DoturdGrump 2d ago

I already spent years following Leon, my heart has not room for another lobster

5

u/Rune_roony_587 2d ago

Is he a rock lobster.?

5

u/Cheap_Ambition 2d ago

He's from Iraq

1

u/Basic_Novel_9203 2d ago

I didn’t see any of these in Fallujah.

2

u/Vern1138 2d ago

Now I'm going to have this song stuck in my head. Thank you, I appreciate that.

1

u/rIceCream_King 2d ago

Pronounced ā€œLobstourā€ if you’re from Europe

10

u/Diacetyl-Morphin 2d ago

Very interesting. Never had to do with lobsters, but i'm a big fan of all arthropods, the lobsters are of course among the subtype of crustaceas. Wasn't surprised that they can get much older than people think, even the short lifespan of some like the ones from the Caribbean is 20+ years, but it goes up to more than 100 years for some other types.

Reminds me how some people couldn't believe that i had arachnids (spiders) that were 25 years old, although the world record is 43 years (note: The females live a lot longer than the males)

So as a question, if you have to handle him or her, does he or she ever try to pinch you with the claws?

14

u/gundam2017 2d ago

She would take your fingers off gladly if you tried. Her crusher claw can demolish oysters and clams without effort while the cutter claw has serrated edges to rip you apart. She is learning to trust us more and more, but will bend the tongs we use to feed her if you bump her with them. The day she has to move tanks is very intimidating honestly, but we will get thereĀ

5

u/Diacetyl-Morphin 2d ago

Yeah the force of the claws should not be underestimated. Some people found that out with the Birgus Latro, the Coconut Crab. They have enough force to crack coconuts open, so if you stick your finger between the claws, it's a bad idea.

They are very peaceful, usually, except when some idiots, like youtubers for views, think it's a good idea to provoke them.

About the spiders i had, it depends on both the subtype but also the individual character. I saw both, like tarantulas from types that are known to be rather aggressive, but the specimen were peaceful. And then, the exact opposite, like a Brachypelma Smithi, that is known as very easy to handle and for beginners, but that one was extremely aggressive (and not because of wrong things, like not right temperature, humidity, terrarium space etc.)

In wildlife, the Atrax Robustus (Sidney Funnel Web Spider) is the most dangerous, because it lives in a hole, like in your garden and the hole is often disguised, so it's easy to miss it and when you do some work, to accidentally touch the web around the hole, the spider will quickly push forward and bite you.

But with modern medical care in the ICU and the antidote, there are no more deaths reported from Australia. Still, it's very painful and uncomfortable when you get bitten, like next to the pain, you get heart rate and blood pressure that is off the chart etc.

5

u/gundam2017 2d ago

Hats off for keeping spiders. They dont scare me, but man tarantulas have huge fangs

3

u/Diacetyl-Morphin 2d ago

I was never bitten myself, although i had a few close calls. Like when i had to catch a P. Murinus that had escaped from the terrarium. I used the plastic top from the transport box to make her walk into the box and she attacked it several times with the fangs. There are still holes visible today.

The fangs can be very big for some, especially the Theraphosa Blondi, biggest tarantula in the world. The mechanical damage from the bite is still more than the myth of "it's just like the sting of a bee".

When i started, i underestimated some, like how much weight they could push. One was able to open the slide glass doors of a terrarium when it wasn't locked. She'd get herself into a position between the glass wall and the door, then she'd pull with all of her strength and she only needed to open it a little bit to be able to squeeze through.

But that was easy, she got down and made her way into the bathroom, where she got the light and remained there. I could follow the trail of silk she left behind.

4

u/Bobs_Burgers7 2d ago

I have a bamboo shrimp and that’s the closet lol

4

u/Which-Break5673 2d ago

How did you come to have the lobster?

5

u/gundam2017 2d ago

I wanted to practice with saltwater, so figured what could be better than a store lobster. I got her from a grocery store, packed her into a cooler and she's been my baby for a year now

4

u/Which-Break5673 2d ago

Nice Way back in the 70s my older sister had a saltwater tank. At that time Pier One was know for its aquatic department . I loved when she had a seahorse and a sea anemone!

3

u/gundam2017 2d ago

Thats awesome! I will attempt anemone, but Jam has murdered everything ive added so far.Ā

4

u/Lopsided_Tiger_0296 2d ago

Has she ever molted? How old do you think she is?

6

u/gundam2017 2d ago

She has! Gave me a heart attack when she was limp in her tank, but it was her molt. She is roughly 6 to 8 years oldĀ

4

u/Forgotmypassword6861 2d ago

....Leon?

3

2

3

Lobsters take forever to reach full size, right? What size tank will she need as a full grown?

1

u/gundam2017 2d ago

A 125 will last her for decades. It'll be another 2+ years before she molts again

1

u/Impala1967_1979_1983 2d ago

Oh, wow. That's really interesting. Lobsters are so cool.

-2

u/JumpyPicture6986 2d ago

Set him free! He has no business being in a tank. Lonely.

13

u/gundam2017 2d ago

Im in a desert state thousands of miles from where she was caught. It's either the tank or risking her dying from transport back to the Northeast. She is super happy. Lobsters are solitary and she kills anything I add to the tankĀ

10

u/East-Moose5016 2d ago

Lobsters are solitary so she has no want of company. Captive fish have measurably lower stress hormones than wild fish, and after a stressful event those hormones return to baseline much more quickly. Decapods are generally smart enough to understand the lack of predation in their tank as compared to the wild, and as long as you give them enrichment they're typically pretty happy. They have fairly visible body language once you know them and you can tell when they're happy/irritated/hungry/scared/bored/curious. It's extremely likely that he's much happier than he was fending for himself in the ocean, much the same way tamed stray cats are generally happier than when they lived on the street :)

5

u/shopmoondustmarket 2d ago

Lobster facts!!

1

u/Charming-Fun7737 1d ago

Lobsters are solitary and (esp. the males) are highly territorial. As long as he/she has a cave and the water is cold and parameters are good, and getting the right nutrition, they're probably living a better life than in the wild.
