Doctrine/Theology Monster energy
I was somewhat surprised to see the Monster Energy logo on the field today in Provo for the Notre Dame game. A serving of a Monster Energy drink has 160 mg of caffeine plus a bunch of other stuff Joseph Smith never dreamed of. And you can’t have a cup of Joe?

What’s next? Seagrams? The Marlboro Man? A pot dispensary?

I’d love to see one of the prediction markets that Christofferson loves so much.

It's appropriate due to the fact that the Monster symbol is 3 Hebrew 6s in a row (666 = Money).

This is directly tied to a doctrinal discussion. In 2009-10-- the PAC10 wouldnt take BYU with the U.
This relates to the Latter Day Saint movement. Because the SL UT based LDS Church fought against gay rights in California in 2007-2008, and that fight is what led to the Supreme Court giving gay adults marital rights.
Many in California, especially shot callers in California had chips on their shoulders for the Utah based Church getting involved in California. I can see their problem. And frankly-- I agree with them.
When conferences aligned a year or so later, the U was seen as a positive addition to the Conference, including major California schools like Berkely, UCLA, USC, and Stanford. California shot callers and leaders were not going to let BYU into their conference. Not after 2007-2008. There were major ideological differences between the LDS Church and California shot callers. And to a certain extent Oregon and Washington leaders as well.
Like literally shot callers in the PAC 10 states, except for like Arizona-- none of them wanted to align with the SL UT based LDS Church and BYU.
The University of Utah entered the PAC 10 conference. And BYU went independent.
BYU was struggling independently for an number of years, and shopped for a conference.
In 2023, BYU entered the Big 12 Conference. It is Midwest States (and West Virginia) that are more conservative states. Gay marriage? These are conservative states, and the conference includes Baylor, another private Christian University. (It included Texas Christian at the time, too).
BYU is doing well in the Athletic Conference, and the inclusion has meant revenue sharing from the Conference-- increased income. And more prominence for the University.
BYU athletics sees it as a good thing.
And here we are. The Conference took a sponsorship with Monster Energy drinks. And their logo is on all the conference play fields. And it represents income to the schools.
It represents at least a million in revenue for each Big 12 school.
And Budweiser sponsored the Olympics, and had a beer tent on Church property in 2002.

A generation or two ago and this would have been a non-starter for joining a particular conference. I wonder if we will see Sunday games soon?
