Glad to hear him say something about politics that I can wholeheartedly agree with again.

u/DjScenester 12h ago
He actually has message “Trump Will Kill America” etched into the run-out groove of the vinyl he released almost a decade ago lol

u/pooflaps50 12h ago
Morrissey has always been pro gay, pro women, anti royalist, anti Thatcher, and an animal loving vegetarian.
You are of course well within your rights to disagree with all that but seems odd you’d also be anti trump also

u/Blametheorangejuice 11h ago
For someone who is often quite poetic in his lyrics, he is rather marble mouthed when he gives interviews. I think some of it is his desire to get people worked up, but I also just think he has no need or desire to speak clearly about politics, so he gives a few statements and moves on. He doesn’t provide, or seem to want to provide, any nuance, and that’s what gets him in trouble.
The punk-style provocateur can’t exist in the era of thirty-second attention spans and internet karma.

u/TheGorgeousJR 12h ago
The operative word was ‘again’ you pillock.

u/pooflaps50 12h ago
I can only assume the JR in your username stands for Joachim von Ribbentrop. He didn’t look particularly gorgeous to me however

You are conveniently ignoring his flirtation with the far-right, Trump not included
3
u/yOpinion 8h ago
Please explain Morrissey's "flirtation" with the far-right.
5
u/Too0ldm8 8h ago
I believe he’s made anti mass immigration remarks in the past, these days being sceptical of immigration allegedley makes you far right
2
u/malonine 2h ago
I hate to use the term "slippery slope" but the Trump administration's "skepticism of immigration" has led to a lawless army of thugs shooting and kidnapping people and illegally deporting American citizens. So Moz is right in his appraisal of Trump. But the romanticization of "days gone by", in the the US or UK, can make certain brown folks like me uneasy.

The goalposts about supporting the only democracy in the Middle East has also changed.
1
u/GazelleIntelligent89 7h ago
Those opinions do make you far right on places like Reddit sadly despite it being the common sense opinion of most people in the UK.
0
u/Too0ldm8 7h ago
There’s a massive nuance in this topic and people increasinglytreat these things in a gamified binary way, much like our friends in the US

I think it started when he tried to get Madness fans onside during a festival years ago by coming onstage with a Union Jack. But they mainly threw things at him and called him a queer.

u/Phoenix_Kerman 10h ago
is that not a product the left right discourse over some things in the uk not being represented accurately by the political parties

His comments about Keven spacey weren’t cool. He was victim blaming.
-2
u/pooflaps50 11h ago
They were absolutely bang on. Spacey was innocent and proven to be so.
5
u/dalliahflower 11h ago edited 11h ago
Spacey reached an out-of-court, confidential settlement with three men who had filed High Court. At the time, Moz would not have known he was “innocent” and he was speaking about how he actually feels about SA. The comments weren’t specific to Spacey. We need to encourage ppl to speak up. He was also good friends w R Brand
-2
u/pooflaps50 11h ago
Spacey is innocent. You might like him to be in jail anyway but good luck with that. We can’t just lock people away like we are in Nazi Germany.
3
u/dalliahflower 11h ago edited 11h ago
That’s not the point! He made generic comments beforehand with his beliefs. I’m not going to argue with you. I don’t care enough about your love of Spacey and not my point about the comments made.

Not caring about sexual abuse is a pretty bad look
Wow you retrospectively changed your comment. Jeez that’s tragic. Just own what you originally said

The fact that he doesn’t tick your “pro uncontrolled immigration” box doesn’t make him a bad person.

This is far from the first time he’s said something like this but people would rather stick to their caricature of him.
He even praised Bernie at one of his shows back in 2016.

The only comments I can recall him making about American politics have always been pro-Democratic Party/pro-left wing and don’t resemble the kinds of remarks he makes about UK politics. I think he compartmentalizes.

Oddly everyone in the world knows this to be true - yet no one does anything about it - Why?
2
u/LobsterKris 6h ago
Because all the checks and balances of power are also corrupt. People will only riot when sufficient amount of them are without food, but that's pretty covered for a modern society, if they wanted to they could feed us all, and with Ai and mentions of ubi and a free smartphone for everyone to keep us deviding each other.

I honestly wouldnt have been surprised if he was a trump supporter at this point but hey i guess he’s sane about something after all

u/NoLibrarian5149 12h ago
Back around that idiots first term, his band wore anti-Trump shirts onstage. He also said if he could push a button and the man would drop over, he would push it.
6
u/Blametheorangejuice 11h ago
Dude got a visit from the Secret Service during Trump’s first term. It is pretty clear he never liked him.

He does seem to prefer generally being negative, except about that crazy Muslim woman.

Funny thing is when I worked at a butcher shop, most of the employees like the smiths and play them at work. I told them, you that morrissey would totally hate us
0
u/ReporterFeisty4619 4h ago
Why would he have hated butcher shop employees?
1
u/Sudden_Onions 4h ago
He's quite a vocal opponent of meat...
1
u/ReporterFeisty4619 4h ago
Well, yes. But I always thought his ire was directed more at those who chose to eat it.

this was like a decade ago, he’s probably changed his views on trump because he’s a contrarian who would eat his own shit if the “establishment” told him not to.
2
u/IssueHealthy 11h ago
I would agree but trump is the establishment now so he probably still feels this way

Morrissey has spent the last 40 years saying whatever isn't popular from Smiths debut on
7
u/simonsghostcouk 11h ago
You think Morrissey says things to be popular? Have you not been following him long?

And all the other comments he's made over the years? You think they've made him popular? He's not being played much partly because of his comments. I don't agree with much of what he says nowadays, but I don't think he's saying anything because he thinks it'll sell more records.

Too right wing for Morrissey takes some doing.
2
u/ReporterFeisty4619 4h ago
He’s very much a traditional left-winger in his general outlook, and not being in favour of mass immigration doesn’t make someone “right wing”. Sorry if that’s all a bit too complex for you.
0
u/PomegranateWinter851 2h ago
Early in his career, Morrissey was outspoken on the left, railing against Thatcherism, institutional authority and the royal family. Over the subsequent decades, his public positions have moved sharply right. Driving that shift is a one-dimensional and distorted idea of traditional English working-class identity. That idea appears to have fed his loud opposition to mass immigration, multiculturalism and globalisation, all of which he sees as threats to a mythical culture that he claims is being lost.
His politics now includes open support for far-right parties such as For Britain, and opining about the right wing dog whistles of political correctness, diversity initiatives and cancel culture. He is evidently a populist, right-wing nationalist.
I will not rise to puerile insults as 'Sorry if that’s all a bit too complex for you.'

This guy has 18 politically opposing views. I enjoy maybe 2 of them? I have to extrapolate that he’s only out for himself and has no empathy - but that sometimes that position tallies with something decent

Yet everyone who took the jab got Covid anyway. And at the time my job was threatened I had already had covid and beat it before a “vax” even existed. You don’t need med school to know it was bullshit.

He's just more upfront about his narcissism than other world leaders. Others hide it behind closed doors and facades, he's just bullish about it.
