It must have been for that Uncharted movie.

: * ( i was so genuinely upset about this movie. the games are written so well and actually feel like a movie that should translate.

Casting. It would have been perfect had they just cast two leads more suited to the roles.

Mark Wahlberg was so irritating in that film

Boogie Nights was legendary, I'm so glad they went with Wahlberg instead of DiCaprio.

He's in lots of good movies, he just needs the right role. He's also in lots of bad movies when it's not a good fit.

He's one of those guys who kinda always plays the same character and when it works it's great, but it doesn't work a lot of the time.

Mark Wahlberg is one of the few actors that will make me straight up not watch a movie

21

u/DJC_Kowalski Sep 13 '26

Yep. There are actors I seek out to stream even if its a trash movie, like Jason Statham. Wahlberg is one of those where I'll avoid the movie even if it looks good. He just sucks the life out of the movies he is in.

The window has closed. Nathan Fillion is too old now.

79

u/brywalkerx Sep 13 '26

Then he should have been Sully.

57

u/Aprahamian Sep 13 '26

Bruce Campbell at the time of the movie filming would have been a perfect t Sully

6

u/TheKappaOverlord Sep 13 '26

iirc bruce made some jokes about it and even got in character for a gag reel as Sully. Pretty sure he mentioned before he would have loved to take the role, but was busy at the time they were looking for someone to fill the role. 100% sure Bruce was on the shortlist/automatic cast for it

Bruce was sully before sully really had his character solidified.

5

u/stac52 Sep 13 '26

Yeah, sully is basically Sam Axe, Campbell's character in Burn Notice

I think when Nathan did that bootleg short, part of his motivation was how he was already at the upper end of the range in which he could reasonably create suspension of disbelief.

30

u/TechnoMaestro Sep 13 '26

And that bootleg short is one of the best video game -> video adaptations out there.

51

u/LordSlickRick Sep 13 '26

The writing of that movie was crusty. I’m not sure any actor was saving it.

59

u/Gandolfthewhite182 Sep 13 '26

Holland actually ended up being fine for a young Drake. Marky mark was terrible and instead of just making the first or second game they combined stuff from all 4 games into one story and it all felt disconnected.

If tom holland was even willing to come back, I would recast sully with an older fella and I would just make the 2 game the story of the movie. I think it could still be done really well.

16

u/Effective_Sherbet_57 Sep 13 '26

I picture someone like JK Simmons as sully

9

u/Alienhaslanded Sep 13 '26

Mark and the weak story ruined it. So far I can't say Tom Holland is a movie ruiner. Mark was the problem and the plot was fucking dumb. Having a fucking key to open a door being the plot device is so dumb because the bad guys could just use x-ray and tear down a fucking wall. Even the games made it very important to find the next clue for the next location and didn't focus too much on a stupid physical key. The items had significance for clues but they weren't crucial for entering a treasure location. Also, no Elena is just lame.

60

u/LuckyPlaze Sep 13 '26

Tom Holland did a great job as Drake. He had the body language down perfect. It was the other roles.

And the script. The script was terrible.

107

u/virtuallyaway Sep 13 '26

Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake would have been my pick

85

u/Miroklast Sep 13 '26

I'd agree if we were still in 2010.

They could easily have made a trilogy out of it with him.

33

u/psychocopter Sep 13 '26

It genuinely could've been a spiritual successor to the indiana jones movies. Imagine instead of the crystal skull in 2008, 2012 rolls around with Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake and you could even have Ford as Sully at this point

18

u/maxstryker Sep 13 '26

Tom Selleck as Sully.

104

u/cannedrex2406 Sep 13 '26

Sadly he was 10 years too old for the role. Drakes in his mid 30s to early 40s, but Nathan was 52 on release of the film.

But I bet he would've done wonders if the movie came out in 2012, not 2022

19

u/attentionpaysme Sep 13 '26

Yeah after seeing CGI Al Pacino I think I’m good with Holland over Nathan

44

u/Useful-Problem-1725 Sep 13 '26

He did a short film instead.

Way better than the entire uncharted movie.

20

u/ZombieTrogdor Sep 13 '26

The way they did that camera shot after he jumps out the window is the difference between a video game movie and a movie with characters from a video game. Just perfection.

8

u/awerro Sep 13 '26

I always say this but bradley cooper at the time wouldve been the best possible choice, sully is a much harder cast imo

Ryan Gosling was closer in age. His role in The Nice Guys showed the right sarcastic humor too. Jake Gyllenhaal would have been good too.

It's also the fact that the games are so cinematic that I'm really unsure what a movie can even add to that.

32

u/kermi42 Sep 13 '26

I didn’t mind the movie but it kind of mashed up the stories of uncharted 1 and uncharted 4 with a bunch of random set pieces from across the games. When you compare it to a real globetrotting adventure treasure hunt series like Indiana Jones, it comes up short.
By the end of it I thought Holland and Wahlberg were fine as the leads, which I had been dubious about going in, and I wouldn’t have minded a sequel if the sequel managed to be a bit more original.

48

u/myassholealt Sep 13 '26

Same. I don't know how they managed to F that up so bad. Casting Marky Mark was one of the issues though. Never in a million years would he be who I picture when I think of Sully

57

u/Odd-Asparagus7633 Sep 13 '26

You needed someone more like Bruce Campbell, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, even Timothy Dalton. Soneone who can pull off that particular brand of sleazy charm while still being more charming than sleazy.

38

u/muhash14 Sep 13 '26

The very premise of adapting it was a flawed one lol. The thesis statement of any Uncharted game is what would it be like if you could play your way through an Indiana Jones movie, putting that right back into a movie again is reductive and pointless.

As someone who played the game, the movie was pretty fun!

But it has VERY little to do with the game and it's story, and it's a REALLY bad adaptation.

I swear every US box office record nowadays is just Disney studios competing amongst themselves

213

u/space_age_stuff Sep 13 '26

It’s been an issue for years, Disney makes up like a fourth of all box office revenue. There’s six media companies that comprise like 90% of all media revenue, and Disney is the biggest one.

9

u/MaltySines Sep 13 '26

Movie and TV revenue, surely? Not all media.

62

u/Fredidiah Sep 13 '26

Of the major studios, Disney generally seems to have the best quality control. (Admittedly less true over the last ~5 years than it has been through the 2010s)

I'd be interested to see this statistic if they only took the highest grossing film per franchise. Feels like that makes a better metric for who's a bankable star. Rather than "do people show up for this person as this character" it actually becomes "do people show up for this person regardless of what they're in?"

425

Disney first secured licensing rights to build Avatar attractions in its theme parks on September 20, 2011, through an agreement with 20th Century Fox and James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment.

Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' films in the early 00s really cemented how popular the character was. Before that it was Batman and Superman who were the top dogs.

Spiderman was huge in the 60s and 70's. The cartoon from the 60s was and still is amazing and so was the live action Spiderman bits in the variety showThe Electric Company. They look corny now, but they were mind blowing back then for kids like me and my friends

Edit: in case it wasn’t clear, those were Spider-Man comic books.

u/HawkBoth8539 Sep 13 '26

It makes sense to me. Almost all of the Avengers are basically professional heroes - kings, gods, soldiers, warriors, leaders.

Spidey is typically a down-to-earth dude with a day job that barely pays his bills, while going to school, and saving the day on top of that.

199

u/apistograma Sep 13 '26

It's a generational think I believe. If you were a teen before the MCU became a thing, it's not as surprising.

Before Disney started making superhero movies, nobody cared about the Avengers. It always was spiderman, batman and superman. The X-Men were also popular I think.

Disney had to work with B-tier superheroes because the big hero IPs were already taken. Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, etc am were pretty much ignored by the people who were not into superhero comics.

Now that superhero fatigue is a thing, it feels like it's going to be this way again.

44

u/thesirblondie Sep 13 '26

Just fyi, Iron Man was made before Disney bought Marvel. Feige was already working on making the Avengers films and building up to Avengers before Disney came into the picture.

u/SuperMajesticMan Sep 13 '26

I don't believe he's confirmed

24

u/9159 Sep 13 '26

He’s more or less confirmed for the movie after doomsday. Doesn’t look like he’ll make any appear in doomsday itself

I’m so happy for these rich actors it really makes my day knowing they are safe and secure.

Definitely helps me feel just a bit better about not having healthcare. I can't afford an EpiPen so I could just die suddenly from anaphylaxis, but that doesn't really matter to me so long as Disney is raking in dump trucks full of cash.

Actors are wayyyyy down the list of problems.

Like, I doubt Tom Holland is leveraging his wealth to bribe politicians to remove environmental regulations to make his oil business more profitable.

Actors are more likely to blow it all on cocaine which is at least returning the money to circulation.

Meanwhile a third of the games industry has been laid off in the past two years, some people multiple times, myself included, despite video games being significantly more profitable than film.

Why aren't we making that kind of money? I've been in the industry 20 years and I still buy store brand milk.

45

u/Jazzlike-_-Growth Sep 13 '26

The hundreds of people doing the special effects aren't earning millions either.
Anyone whose name doesn't show up in the Wikipedia sidebar is not making extraordinary money.

Unless people know your name, you're not worth much.

(Also this isn't what these actors earned. It's the box office sum of the movies they are in and says nothing about what they got.)

I’d like to see the real number. Being the 5th name on avengers 10 times will get you there. Mark ruffalo must be close behind.

245

u/Believeland-OH Sep 13 '26

Zoe is in the same Avengers films. A majority of hers were Avatar, Avengers, and GotG.

30

u/juicejug Sep 13 '26

Zoe was also in Pirates of the Carribean which made a ton of money

Yeah but she’s only in 2 of the avengers films. Mark has all 4

(Not counting Civil War, which is basically an Avengers film)

27

u/muhash14 Sep 13 '26

Tom's been in just the same two ones as well.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_actors

That has the list as of Aug 23. Mark Ruffalo is not in the top 10:

  1. Zoe Saldaña ($15,470,006,200)
  2. Scarlett Johansson ($15,401,507,141)
  3. Tom Holland ($15,197,879,832)
  4. Chris Pratt ($15,158,303,567)
  5. Samuel L. Jackson ($14,613,700,731)
  6. Robert Downey Jr. ($14,315,110,840)
  7. Tom Cruise ($13,369,366,862)
  8. Chris Hemsworth ($12,189,865,785)
  9. Vin Diesel ($12,043,063,424)
  10. Chris Evans ($11,489,026,787)

65

u/FartingBob Sep 13 '26

That list is ridiculous, giving Samuel L Jackson credit for Endgame in the "lead role" category.

17

u/Baystars2025 Sep 13 '26

I hear he's had it with these mfing credits on this mfing IMDB page.

95

u/Threadheads Sep 13 '26

The only actor on that list who isn’t there (at least in part) because of Marvel movies.

85

u/portablefan Sep 13 '26

For a second there I was like what about Vin Diesel? That's all Fast & Fur- then I remembered he voices Groot

I was about to point out Sam Jackson because I thought he wasn't in that many MCU movies but turned out he appeared in 12 of them lmao

26

u/TravelerSearcher Sep 13 '26

Probably a notable bump for him is the Star Wars prequels.

Similar Zoe Saldana is likely ahead because while she was only in five (?) Marvel movies and the four Avatar films, she was also in the Star Trek (2009) trilogy and the very first Pirates of the Caribbean.

I'm curious how this list is going to change after December as Downey, Evans and Hemsworth are all back for Doomsday. I suppose the Digger movie with Cruise might keep him up there but I doubt that movie will do Marvel numbers.

It's so crazy to me that Fantastic Four (2005) was so good that Chris Evans has been able to coast as the 10th highest paid actor since then

The 4 Spiderman movies alone have grossed 6.3+ billion.

Spiderman wasn't even in the first 2 avengers movies.

Is he bankable or he was just lucky in getting into well known movies.

Like if you swapped out Tom Holland for some other actor, are those two movies going to gross less?

81

u/Varekai79 Sep 13 '26

A bit of A & B. Holland on his own without IP is a non-factor at the box office. That being said, audiences are clearly responding to him far more than they did to Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man.

Why are these always framed like it's the actor and not the movies that made that much money? I'm more interested in the highest grossing actor based on their salaries

u/Nulono Sep 13 '26 edited Sep 13 '26

I'd like to see these numbers adjusted for how much screentime each actor had in each movie.

These have gotten stupid b/c of inflation & superhero movies. Holland made all his money off of Avenger/spiderman movies

Saldana made all her money off Avatar/Guardians

u/chaoticbiguy Sep 13 '26 edited Sep 13 '26

Good for him, but I'm sorry, I can never take these lists seriously bc most of the actors here are mostly flops as solo leads in movies that aren't established IPs. On top of that, a major part of their box office comes from ensembles, and like, how fair is it to give them credit for that? I mean the list has Zoe Saldana, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, RDJ, Chris Pratt, Hemsworth and Evans.

I've said this before, Tom Cruise is the only one from this list who "deserves" any recognition for box office.

26

u/TheSearchForMars Sep 13 '26

That's because Tom Cruise is one of the only ones on that list that is actually a movie star.

Very few of those actors listed have the star power to make someone see the film for them like Cruise does.

For example, Holland and Downey Jr. aren't the stars, Iron Man and Spiderman are. People go to see those movies for the characters, not the actors.

Easiest way to see this is in the box office response to Dolittle which had both Downey and Holland in it yet ended with a 250mil global box office with an estimated 50-100 million dollar loss.

I'd argue that Timothee Chalamet is a much more marketable actor than Holland.

With the rise of massive franchises, with 10+ $1b+ films, this statistic is irrelevant.

Back when most everything was a standalone film, or (at most) a single sequel, it had some relevance.

Passing Saldana? I must have been living under a rock, because I never would have guessed she was, up until now.

She was in both the Avengers and Avatar. Those 2 IPs alone puts her above the basically everything else lol
