Loved it. I really like the idea that you are following someone who is ultimately just a victim like anyone else in the city, complete with an audio log left behind. It was a little abrupt at the end but that's ok cause I was fully invested the entire runtime.
I also love the meta commentary on padlocks in survival horror games. I could not stop laughing at him shooting them and it doing nothing.

Maybe a bit of a stretch but I understood Maxine's character was what a "classic" RE protagonist would be like.

Before I start: The RV scene is the best scene in the movie.
We finally got a GREAT Resident Evil movie. I don't know how Cregger captured the feeling of playing these games with such clarity. To balance horror with the absurdity of a situation or to show the ridiculousness of needing a key to get a car past a fence to making the last bullet you have count so you can just get to the next door. Phenomenal.
Turns out we didn't need a 1:1 remake of the storylines in the games, we just needed someone who played the games and translated those feelings on screen.

I think he captured it by making the protagonist feel less like a video game character and more like a normal person reacting while playing the games. He’s like the movie characterization of the player.

I liked how the first one was indestructible because it had a special key. (Pretty sure it had a diamond symbol too), like one of those puzzle locks that absolutely requires you to complete a puzzle.
But then the one later in the movie that actually breaks is just a generic padlock.

That was a lot of fun. I liked that whatever the virus is in this world seems to be a mix of Las Plagas from RE 4 with a sprinkle of The Thing. The elevator scene was fun cause I legit forgot about the acid throw up.
My only issue is how abrupt the end is. Unlike the recent Hope which decided to have the most random ending you could think of, this was just “thats it movies over get out”. Could have used maybe 15-20 extra minutes.
Honestly I may see it again. It was fun.

Can’t get over the dynamic lighting in the first half of the movie. The way the snow shined in blood red tail lights with a suffocating pitch black background was so cool. Yeah for how much of a mission they were on to get the cure to the hospital her getting out of the car to try and save somebody being swarmed by like 10+ infected was a crazy choice. Really feels like Cregger wanted to deny the protagonist the opportunity to be in a car as much as possible to really engross the audience in the tension/horror lol.

I'm assuming that after she finished off the zombies, the alley/arm monster grabbed the lady, and Maxine went in to save her from it (like she did with Bryan, it quickly fled after a few shots), only to immediately run out of bullets (it looked like her gun on the ground was empty/the slide was locked back) and got snatched, too.

I had this thought. Like, this character is not a Resident Evil protagonist. He's a player thrust into a Resident Evil situation. The "protagonist" is Maxine, who shows up, bodies zombies like they're nothing, then gets taken out by the boss the first time she tries to fight it. Problem is, you only get one shot.
I also dig the little thru-line joke about Bryan not using the Typewriter. Because he didn't use it, he never saved his progress and thus when he dies, that's it. YOU HAVE DIED and all that. Now upon rewatch, it's back to the beginning.

Once Bryan recorded his message his wife would never hear, I knew what Creggar was going for.
This is essentially the off-screen minor story you read about in documents you find while wandering. There's always bit characters recording their journey until they end with a tragic fate the game protagonists avoid.
I can imagine Leon/Claire/Jill/Carlos stumbling upon his recording and putting it back down not knowing the shit he went through. Brian may even be killed by one of those protagonists in another universe.
Brilliant way of avoiding OP protagonists and keeping RE terrifying throughout the run-time.

Yes, that was my feeling too. Like, the movie's main character isn't the game's main character. The game starts after he has already failed, he's just one of the voice logs that you find along the way; the backstory to one of the monsters.

Because of the ending, i like to think Bryan is the type of guy that ends up becoming the bosses Leon or the others encounter.
Many may have survived a while longer than most.
Those resilient enough, could be the ones that turn into stronger creatures. Idk maybe because they bring that awoken never ending adrenaline rush with them.

that was why there was a bunch of stuff from the games that he never interacted with. He wasn't the protagonist, those weren't meant for him.

Yeah but from what I got, that’s the point here. This guy is just like any other random npc from the games from which you end up finding their final notes somewhere as a log for world building.
He couldn’t win once he got bitten because the raccoon city tragedy still had to happen.
That’s one touch that I really liked about this movie, that it made the raccoon city event feel like a tragedy. I’ve played all the games and honestly this is the one RE material that reminded me “hey, this raccoon city thing that happened in this universe is an absolutely terrible and tragic thing”

I would’ve liked it if he managed to get a small signal up in the lab and send his girlfriend that voice memo, at least. Some kind of closure.

The voice memo did make me realize this is ultimately a feature film origin story of an NPC who becomes a boss fight for Claire/Leon/Chris etc to fight later, and I dug the ending a lil more with that thought.

when he opens the bedroom door in the homestead and the camera pushes pass him, that felt like it was capturing the feeling of opening a door in RE1

Good ending can also be obtained by completing the QTE of grabbing the keys off Maxine's waist, so you can use the SUV and bypass the sewers, which gets you to the lab with enough time left to use the cure before turning.

I just took it as the impact was strong enough to kill the parasite-thing inside the bodies, while shooting them just damaged the host. Total body impact vs localized trauma.

The ending of this will be controversial and I think a lot of people will dislike it, but to me it felt like a great showcase of the T-virus and separated itself from your typical zombie movie.
If you’ve never had a high fever or similar ailments (I personally once got meningitis and was walking around and couldn’t remember my birthday) it’s a extremely odd sensation to lose parts of your brain while still retaining other motor functions at high capacity.
So when Bryan starts losing his body but retains his mind it felt exactly like that. His body is lost as it brutally kills all the scientists but the entire time his mind remains singularly focused on getting the cure. The virus is spreading through his body but he is fighting it to hold onto his life. I thought the sequence was amazingly shot and paced. Many stories don’t have happy endings. I’m sure the syringe survived the fall and we’ll get a movie that could pick it right up where it left off. Cregger made a Resident Evil movie from the perspective of the character a Leon or Jill finds a voice note from and to me it was far more entertaining and heartbreaking.

So it looked like the creature was trying to lure him further in like fishing. My thought was it did the same to her probably with the woman she ran out there to save and she was completely cocky and over confident. He survived that part because he nopes out.

I was thinking of that one specifically when I made my comment too LOL. The way that shot was set up was masterful, who expects a jump scare when the main character is already panicking trying to load a gun for a different monster! Genius!

Austin Abrams is a star, man. It's so hard to carry a movie entirely on your back like this and he just owns it, even when he's acting against nothing. This is like Tom Hanks in Castaway if Wilson was a giant tentacle monster instead of a Volleyball

Can I say something kind of weird? It was so oddly refreshing when he took off his shirt and he just looked like a normal guy. We're so conditioned to every shirtless actor having the 30 hour dehydration 6 pack.

Him trying to cover himself with his shirt when he realizes he’s on camera was one of my favorite moments of the movie, and it got the biggest laugh out of my audience. It’s so relatable.

They managed to make a movie feel like a horror game and actually pulled it off masterfully! Best horror flick I've seen in some time.
Ironically I just watched Barbarian for the first time two days ago and I can definitely see a little bit of the inspiration. All around great time and genuinely well-timed jump scares.
I keep thinking back to the ranch house and how you just knew the husband was hiding in the corner, but the movie did such a good job of distracting you by shifting focus back on the wife over and over that you completely forget about the husband. Such a well-crafted movie.

I really enjoyed the movie. I can't wait to rewatch. I don't know if I am reading into things too much but I think there was a pretty cool parallel between Michelle and Bryan. I don't think Zach was trying to compare being pregnant and having a parasite living in you as a 1:1 comparison, but there was some cool points made from it.
Seeing how Bryan is able to easily brush off Michelle's initial concerns with "Its your body, your choice" when she is clearly asking for him to validate her feelings and talk her through this tough situation, and then later seeing Bryan's questions about the parasite get ignored after he has been bitten was interesting. Throughout the movie as he sees his body changing more and more we also see him starting to accept and understand what Michelle is going through.
It comes to a climax when he sees that the parasite has made it well past just his arm and seeing the family portrait on the van that he fully accepts the reality of both situations and breaks down.
Who knows, I will see if I still get those undertones when I rewatch it on streaming.

Also I don't think it's a coincidence that his pursuer in the movie is a hybrid which has lost all individuality, a great metaphor for the anxieties of someone about to assimilate into a family unit.

The most “of course” ending there is… I was fooled thought the time he’d get that dose. But the whole game doesn’t happen unless there’s an outbreak. So fun to see Zach Cherry & Griffin Newman at the end, the desk pop was hilarious
