What an excellent time and it’s such a shame that so few people will actually watch this. This movie just flies by with so many fun visual gags, and great humour. I enjoyed every second of this movie from beginning to end. Truthfully it’s likely the best animated film this year in terms of actual animation. These are the type of movies we should be supporting in theatres. That being said I did hate the sheep’s side mouth.

The biggest knock on this movie is the actual lack of mossy bottoms. I demand more bottoms

I agree with the sentiment that it's a shame so few will see this initially. We went this morning and it was literally just my daughter, my wife and I in the theater.

3

u/BallinBrown23 28d ago

My wife and I went last night and were the only people there as well

I went this afternoon to a surprisingly full theatre. Maybe 60%. Basically all the good seats were taken. Audience skewed older than I expected as well.

Children who grew up with Shaun on CBBC are now in their mid-20s, same as where I went, it was full of 25-30 year olds which was amazing!

It deserve a bigger theater fandom. The problem is with these films, most families will wait until it comes out on streaming due to things like ticket and snack prices and having to wrestle the kids into the theaters.

Which is a shame because if these movies don't make money in the theaters, they won't be made at all. And this movie had so much talent behind everything. I adore everything Aardman puts out.

The side mouth was so distracting I almost walked out. glad it's not just me

Aardman unironically probably has the best betting record of any major animation studio

u/ATF1 22d ago

Agreed, although I can't say I was a fan of Early Man

Funny movie. Easiest VA paychecks ever. The angry mob that just wants to be an angry mob and has no ability to do anything about it is hilarious. Though I’m pretty sure stapling someone to a wall is many shades of illegal.

This is the first Shaun the Sheep movie I’ve seen, and I’m tempted to go back and watch some others.

I loved the smart phone displaying a torch fire and just on a selfie stick trying to be a lit torch. The very first Shaun The Sheep movie is still my absolute favorite and even has some emotional moments in it, but this one was a lot of fun.

2

u/indianajoes 10d ago

I loved that so much. It's so simple but so brilliant

3

u/MIKRO_PIPS 28d ago

Please do, they’re all hilarious

6

u/DeepThinkingReader 27d ago

The alien one is fantastic.

1

u/indianajoes 10d ago

The first one was my favourite. I didn't love Farmageddon but I thought it was still fun. The new one is probably the second best one IMO

Wonderful movie.  There are so many gags but did y'all hear the biggest sheep yell "HODOR!" as they're up against the door trying to prevent the "beast" from entering? I laughed so hard.  What Laika does is magnificent but I have more affection for stop-motion that is visibly stop-motion,  like this. To me it's worth seeing this on the big screen just to fully appreciate all the wonderful textures.  The clothes, fur, hair, leaves, clay, water and everything else are just a delight to watch.  In my theater it was just me and a mom and a daughter who appeared to be about four, and she was clearly engaged the whole time. Such a shame that more families won't be seeing this. Oh,  and every single vocalization of the baby lamb got an internal "awwww" from me.

10

u/PhoenixFoundation 25d ago

I couldn't believe Hodor went over everyone's head in my theater, and then I remembered that episode aired a decade ago...

3

u/AgentCooper86 20d ago

Oh damn missed that

2

u/tittymuch 13d ago

Yes I caught the Hodor! I was surprised at all the little references here and there to all sorts of different things, loved it!

1

u/indianajoes 10d ago

I loved the Hodor reference. I did not expect it and it took me a second to realise what I'd just heard

1

u/moxifloxacin 2d ago

Did you notice the penguin silhouette on the vet clinic X-ray? My favorite Aardman throwback that I noticed.

19

u/MyrcellX 29d ago

Those who have seen it, is it appropriate for a 3-4 year old?

22

u/Raptor_2125 29d ago

Yes its less scary than Were-Rabbit too

11

u/Schnevets 28d ago

My four year old loved it (but said it was scary with a big smile on her face). They do a good job of easing in “the beast” so the audience isn’t scared but the characters are.

3

u/MyrcellX 28d ago

Thanks!

8

u/rdxc1a2t 27d ago

Saw it with my 4 year old and he loved it.

6

u/treyjyert 28d ago

My 4 year old loved it and didn't seem scared, she was too busy laughing at anything Shaun did.

3

u/thomasutra 21d ago

i just took my 4 year old and he loved it!

1

u/Admirable-Yak86 11d ago

I just went to watch it with my five year old and she got so scared that my mother left the theater with her. Mind you, there isn’t anything truly scary in it, it was mainly the atmosphere. However, she doesn’t really watch TV apart from occasionally some Mr Rodger’s, so she is not used to effects and such.

u/2mock2turtle 29d ago

I get the feeling this is probably a ridiculous question, but I'm going to ask it anyway: how much of the preceding Shaun the Sheep media should I watch beforehand? I assume the series is light on continuity, but even then, I also assume I shouldn't go in totally blind.

42

u/tfhaenodreirst 29d ago

Just got back from it. As someone who’s also seen nothing beforehand, it was still easy enough to track! You just have to go into it knowing that there’s no dialogue — but also, I missed the first couple minutes and it wasn’t so bad.

14

u/inksmudgedhands 26d ago

You could go in completely blind and be fine. The movie plays like a silent movie in that the characters are simple tropes and there isn't any dialog to get lost in. It's all visual. You can take someone who hasn't seen a single episode of the show and they would be fine. You can take a five year old to see this and they would be fine. You could take an eighty year old to see this and they would be fine. Heck, you could even take someone who doesn't speak or read a lick of English and they would have no problem following the story.

12

u/Ozzel 29d ago

I’m in the same boat. I’ve only seen the Wallace & Gromit stuff. Wondering if I should at least watch the first two(?) movies first.

32

u/distilledwill 29d ago

Genuinely there will be no need. Its not like its a lore heavy universe. He's a sheep who lives on a farm, there's a farmer and his foil is the farmer's dog.

6

u/Current-Finger6412 24d ago

Just saw it this evening. You can go blind. Very easy to follow with a breezy setup without being familiar. Charming watch, delightful humor. Tons of classic Halloween/spooky nods. Great watch to set the tone for the season!

2

u/2mock2turtle 24d ago

Awesome, thanks!

-13

u/CainCarving 29d ago

It's a movie about sheep for babies, I think you're fine lol

10

u/SuperNntendoChalmerz 29d ago

not just for babies or even targeted for babies lol, even though there is no dialogue it's great for teaching kids social and physical cues. Definitely fun for adults too.

16

u/Majora101 29d ago

I'm looking forward to this. I'm going next week for a double header of this and Ghost in the Shell

8

u/TRANSformativeFriend 28d ago

That’s literally what my fiancé and I are doing this weekend lmao! We saw Shaun today and then GitS tomorrow

13

u/AdrenalinDragon 29d ago

I think this one lands somewhere between the first and second in terms of quality. Kinda borrows from Curse of the Were-Rabbit in places, but this time it’s Shaun and his gang trying to fix the problem with the beast. A lot of charm as expected and fun little gags, shenanigans and solid stop-motion animation. Quick and fun. 7.5/10

4

u/rdxc1a2t 27d ago

I agree. The first is easily the best for me but this one sits above Farmageddon. I'm probably saying the first film is a 9, this is an 8, Farmageddon a 7.

13

u/J-RedFive 28d ago

There was a visual gag every 5 seconds and they were hilarious! Never seen a Shaun the Sheep movie before but this was great

1

u/moxifloxacin 2d ago

My favorite was the penguin in the X-ray. Throwback to OG Wallace and Gromit.

10

u/DullConsequence1913 29d ago

Great movie, and somehow a non dialogue movie is better than most other modern films, i hope we get a 4th movie in a few years

8

u/MIKRO_PIPS 28d ago

Hilarious on all fronts

8

u/Luvsicpt2 25d ago

Was a fantastic film,
As a halloween lover, this got me Into the spooky season even more!
5/5!!!

6

u/thriftstoremando 29d ago

Shaun of the Sheep? Is it a new, zombie apocalypse take on Shaun the Sheep?

3

u/Current-Finger6412 24d ago

The way I have been unintentionally calling this movie ‘Shaun of the Sheep’ since it was announced. 😭

8

u/qman3333 24d ago

Goated movie. Had so much fun. Me and my wife in our 30s no kids were def having a blast and a half. Shaun the sheep forever

7

u/themonsterbrat 21d ago

Loved all the references to Nosteratu, Frankenstein, Psycho, The Wolf Man, The Shining, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, David Cromenberg, Thriller... and HODOR!

6

u/AcanthisittaGreen766 17d ago

Don’t forget Back to the Future!

2

u/moxifloxacin 2d ago

Haha the Cronenburgers food stand got a hearty chuckle out of me

12

u/PalantirImperator 29d ago

I can't be the only person frustrated by the typo in the title.

18

u/Hufflepuffins 29d ago

Take car. Go to mum's. Kill Phil, grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to baa over.

5

u/KangarooOverlord 27d ago

In a way, not too far from the actual plot

5

u/DoctorWhofan789eywim 27d ago

Aardman proving they are still the best in the business when it comes to animation. A joke in pretty much every frame. My only criticism is surely they can be more imaginative than ripping off the story from Curse of the Were Rabbit, which admittedly is still the gold standard, but even so.

My favourite gag was either the Psycho reference or a Womble being in the vet's book of creatures.

5

u/mbourgon 26d ago

Laughed at least every couple of minutes. Jokes for the kids, plenty of references and jokes for the adults as well. Would see with kids, would see without kids.

4

u/yoits_vansss 23d ago

What a cute movie!! 10/10 went with my siblings (mind y’all we’re all in our 20’s) and even my sister who gets bored of animated movies was surprisingly amused by it!

3

u/BortInSpace 25d ago

What happened with this theatrical release? No showtimes at all around me only a few days after release - how did it get yanked so quickly??

7

u/SuperNntendoChalmerz 29d ago

Just watched with my wife and kids. We loved it, we have all been fans of the series including Wallace and Gromit. On that note, the story felt very similar to Curse of the were Rabbit but in it's own Shaun The Sheep style so not in a bad way. The animation was top tier, looked gorgeous in a theater.

I hope it does well, I haven't seen a lot of promo for it at all and I feel like anything I do see on social media is only because I'm streaming the netflix series and other movies occasionally on my phone for my kids.

u/licorice_straw 28d ago

Question: Likely going with my kids tomorrow, age 5 & 7. They are a little sensitive (ok fine, kind of wusses) about scary parts. They eventually liked curse of the wererabbit but were scared at first. Was anything remotely scary in this? Thanks!

4

u/BallinBrown23 28d ago

I think they will likely be fine. There is a very small “jump scare” of bats flying out of a door and a tunnel. The “monster” is known from the start who and what it is. The viewer goes along with the journey as the charters are scared and then their discovery

2

u/licorice_straw 28d ago

Thank you!

3

u/SuperNntendoChalmerz 28d ago

Hopefully not too late but as the other comment said there isn't anything to really worry about apart from that minor jump scare. It's very fun Halloween themed as opposed to horror, even tho there are references to a few horror movies but only adults will understand it.

2

u/licorice_straw 27d ago

Just got out of the theater, kids had a great time. Thank you!

1

u/Admirable-Yak86 11d ago

I just went to watch it with my five year old and she got so scared that my mother left the theater with her. Mind you, there isn't anything truly scary in it, it was mainly the atmosphere and some jump scares. However, she doesn't really watch TV apart from occasionally some Mr Rodger's, so she is not used to effects and such.

2

u/lonelygagger 24d ago

I'm sure it was a great movie, but unfortunately the crowd I saw it with was shit. Unchecked kids yelling and an adult couple down my row who talked for the ENTIRE runtime of the movie. I just felt angry and unable to enjoy any of the stopmotion goodness. I guess I'll enjoy it when comes to digital.

2

u/dergonslayer 15d ago

i want to see the movie so bad, but have a busy schedule. just found out that they’re no longer showing it anywhere near me and i am devastated 😭

2

u/moxifloxacin 2d ago

I doubt anyone will see this comment at this point, but I loved seeing the penguin silhouette on the X-ray in the background of one of the vet clinic shots.

2

u/Type_Rex__ 1d ago

I saw your comment! Hahaha. I caught the final showing of this movie yesterday and I ran to this thread.

The entire movie was a visual feast, and I'm glad I saw it on the big screen. There are so many little gags and details that one might miss on the TV.

1

u/Indominus_Red 22d ago

I just saw this because I'm on Regal Unlimited. It was the worst movie I've ever seen since joining here nearly 3 years ago!

1

u/matticans7pointO 15d ago

Curious if others think this would be suitable for my 3 year old? He does like a few of the other Shaun movies and shows and he enjoys a few spooky (for kids) things like Caroline, Nightmare before Christmas, and Night of the Zoopocalypse for context of his entry level.

2

u/tittymuch 13d ago

Totally fine. Took mine today and she enjoyed it.
