Hello everyone! A question for director Brian Duffield:

You’ve mentioned sliding into Daniel Kraus’s DMs after he tweeted about the Whalefall book. What was it about the premise that made you so relentless about adapting it, and how did that initial excitement evolve during production?

14

u/OFKB02 9d ago

Hi, Austin! I've recently finished reading Whalefall and it's such a wild journey, I can't wait to see you in the movie!

Since Whalefall focuses on heavy topics and emotional struggles of Jay Gardiner, is there any part of him that you feel connected with?

Very much relatable and something I can feel connected to, it's nice to know I'm not alone on this.

Josh!!!!!! Love your work. Did your experience as a father influence your choices as you played Mitt?

15

u/MobileResident5527 10d ago

How did you and Josh prepare to play father and son? What do you hope viewers take away from Mitt and Jays relationship?

How did you prepare for the role of being swallowed? Have you spoken to anyone who has been swallowed by a whale before

8

u/Weary_Hunt_3374 10d ago

Since Whalefall is is a book to screen adaption, what's your favorite book to screen adaption that you've seen recently (or ever) ? Why did you like it? And, did you read the book it was based on?

4

u/Honey_dew_rose 10d ago

Hello! Was there a moment in the book that stood out to you as a scene that felt really important Jay’s story and that you were excited to portray on screen?

Congrats on all the success in your movies this year!

6

u/MobileResident5527 10d ago

Did bringing this story to life change how you and the team feel about the ocean at all?

3

u/staranea 10d ago

What’s one thing that’s crucial when it comes to understanding Jay Gardiner as a character/person?

3

u/questionlover33 9d ago

Brian and Daniel! What did you look to as inspiration as you each respectively crafted this story? What do you hope people takeaway from it?

Hi Austin! I’ve been having a blast checking out your filmography. It was crazy watching Weapons and Resident Evil, then going back and realizing you were THAT kid from The Walking Dead and Silicon Valley. It’s such a trip, and I’m stoked to see what you’ll do next.

From the interviews I’ve seen, you seem like a pretty private dude. Out of respect for that, I’ll stick to questions about your professional work.

You looked emaciated in Weapons, and put on some extra weight for Resident Evil (which I imagine was kind of nice for cold night shoots.) What was your diet like for each of these roles?

You have several acting credits and one soundtrack credit. Are there any other positions you’d like to hold within the filmmaking world?

I read somewhere that you were initially surprised and somewhat embarrassed by your shriek while filming Resident Evil. As a female audience member, I would like to inform you that we loved it! Thank you for genuinely expressing primal fear as opposed to leaning into machismo. Regardless of the ending, Bryan’s character sets an important example of men being the hero AND being scared AND showing it. I hope we see more of this in horror, and your contribution is appreciated.

I’m excited to check out Whalefall in a couple weeks, and I hope you’re getting some well earned rest after three back to back, demanding roles. Cheers and thanks for being here!

19

u/verdantsf 9d ago

realizing you were THAT kid from The Walking Dead and Silicon Valley. It’s such a trip, and I’m stoked to see what you’ll do next.

Right?! I feel like Austin inhabits each role so well, it's almost to his detriment. He's felt/looked so different in each role, that up until now, each time seeing him felt like the first time.

38

u/Hglucky13 9d ago

Can confirm. Loved the screaming and completely dissociated remarks (ie “oh… that’s interesting” while watching some genuine messed up stuff happening on that bedroom floor).

7

u/OkWishbone158 9d ago

yeah it’s always wild realizing an actor you’ve been watching for years was also that random kid from something else and i love that the resident evil scream got appreciated instead of being toned down for macho points

19

u/devils__avacado 10d ago

Oh shit I totally forgot he was in silicon valley dude was hilarious in that to

5

u/FallenReaper360 10d ago

Ah shit for reals!? I don’t remember.

Oh damn, he looked hella young back then lol

Some of the best screamwork of all time, not joking

7

u/Keigos_fluffy_wings 8d ago

Seconding the shrieking comment. I love it when dudes shriek all high pitched, like Austin and Ryan Gosling. It’s soo cute 😭

6

u/zentimo2 9d ago

Yeah, he's so good in Res Evil. I think because of the way we tend to construct masculine/feminine identities, audiences tend to be less sympathetic to men showing extreme fear in films (it's why the Final Girl in horror is usually, well, a girl) but in Res Evil he's able to be genuinely frightened AND so completely charming at the same time that you never stop rooting for him.

14

u/TwitchyEyeball 9d ago

Hi, Austin! Thanks so much for doing this AMA! I'm super psyched to see Whalefall in 4DX on Friday!

Here are some questions:

  1. Your last few films have been so physically demanding...swimming/having to fight your way out of a "whale", shrieking and running for your life etc. in Wolfs, Weapons, Resident Evil...are you someone that's just naturally athletic or is that something that you have to work at?

  2. You did theater as a kid? Any desire to return to the stage, on or off Broadway? We'd love to see it!

  3. You seem like a pretty private person and don't have a social media presence, which I honestly find quite refreshing. Is that an important part of your overall process and protecting your peace? Or are you just reluctant in becoming a slave to the algorithm like the rest of us?

Lastly, aside from your performances in Weapons and Resident Evil, 2 of my favorites are Gettys O'Brien (The Line) and The Kid (Wolfs)...one a frat dude thats super confident and cocky, the other a kind of squirrely, naive boy that just wanted to feel cool for a bit. They couldn't be any more opposite and as viewers we grow to have empathy for both, but ultimately they have opposite outcomes at the hand of their captors. You really disappear into the characters you take on (they really do be going through some shit!) and it's so fun to watch!

Anyway, thanks again for doing this and really hope you get a chance to take a breather once in a while!

hi austin!! congrats on all the new success, love your work and am rooting for you ☘️ :-)

it’s clear that you’re somewhat of a method actor and really allow the work you’re a part of to become a transformative experience for you - like keeping a real notebook for dash & lily learning about drug addiction for james in weapons, or carrying character dynamics between yourself and your scene partners off screen like in wolves and the line.

Q: does it ever become difficult to switch a character off when you’re not on set, especially after immersing yourself so deeply in their headspace? and has there been a role where that process changed you or taught you something about yourself that carried with you after filming?

1

u/Adeline_Hayes 10d ago

The trailer gave me chills. Did the production work with marine biologists to get the whale's behavior right? Asking as a nature documentary addict 😄

19

u/Round_Club6514 10d ago

Hey man, I’m an actor, and I’ve really been enjoying your work. Congrats on two major films coming out so close to each other. My question is — how TF do you deal with all of the press/promotion of two studio pictures at one time? Do you have any downtime? Are you doing anything as a concentrated effort to not completely self destruct? Just wondering how you’re doing I guess. Good luck man!

23

u/nevermoer 10d ago

Hey Austin! Got a favourite video game? Please tell me its Subnautica.

When me and my sister watched you in Resident Evil just the other day I said 'bet he is a gamer in real life' and my sister responded 'maybe', and I said 'it would be cool if he played subnautica'' and she said 'shut the fuck up we are watching a movie'.

So that is my question.

3

u/SuperOriginalUser28 8d ago

He said in an interview a little while back that he liked RDR, particularly one.

14

u/mrsyoungmazino 10d ago

Hello Austin! My question for you is in Whalefall your character gets swallowed by a sperm whale & that type of scenario can trigger someone's claustrophobia. Austin, what personal fears do you have, rational/irrational, that you wish you could explore in a future role? If you felt you faced a fear in a previous role what was it & what was that process like? Thanks.

6

u/Mori0hCh0 9d ago

Hi Austin!!! I think by the time you or your team sees this I'll have seen Resident Evil 6 times in theaters, and despite how deranged that may sound, I still am itching to see it again. Absolutely fantastic work, thank you to both you and Zach from the bottom of my heart for bringing my favorite game franchise to life.

Your range and ability to emulate a multitude of different "types" always floors me. I can't fathom being able to juggle so many different archetypes and act them out so well on screen!! (Heavy emphasis on your work in Weapons, I quote "I'm phobic" almost every day). Insane kudos to you for stealing the show every time you're on screen even as a side character. So, I wanted to ask ya this:

How would you describe your process for "getting into character"? Is there anything particularly unique that you do? Does that involve some kind of studying or preparation?

As someone who aspires to be part of this kind of creative space I'm genuinely curious how you pull stuff like this off. I mean really, how many people do you know that can jump between a junkie, a frat bro, and whatever the heck Max was in Do Revenge?? Not many!

I'm so excited to see Whalefall! I'm going with all my friends and we all got tickets already. Keep doing what you're doing ❤️

1

u/skellingtonjacks 9d ago

Did you have a favorite scene that you shot?

23

u/rowdyzorz 10d ago

Loved you in Resident Evil! My question is, how well would your Whalefall character Jay do in a Resident Evil scenario? And how well would your Resident Evil character Bryan do if he was swallowed by a whale?

5

u/FormalAnxiety17776 10d ago

Austin!!! I don’t have a lot of good questions but, will Whalefall stay true to the overarching themes from the book? What I mean by that is will the movie focus on Jay’s relationship with his father, how he deals with his death, and more about the psychology within the characters rather than showcasing a “simple” thrilling, survival storyline?

What was it like diving into the ocean and experiencing most of the things Jay experienced throughout his life? I know you love to truly engage with the characters and “feel” the story for what it is, so I want to know how you personally interpreted Jay’s character, and how you represented him throughout the movie.

Lastly, what was it like being inside all those huge props and stuffy sets? Personally, I’d love being inside those things no matter how small and gross they might be, it looks like it’s a really fun environment to play around with. I mean, most people would never get to experience being inside a replica of a sperm whale, so I’d hope it was really awesome and fun for you.

I can’t wait to watch Whalefall once it’s in theaters, and I love seeing your work! You always seem to choose very interesting roles in my opinion, so I can’t wait to see what you decide to do next. I’m planning to read the book after I watch the movie, so believe me, I’m not only watching this because you’re in it.

Hope you and the Whalefall team have a nice day. ❤️❤️

Do you get claustrophobic, and if so, how did you manage that during shooting Whalefall?

Hi Austin! With the upcoming release of Whalefall, you join actors like Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and Florence Pugh, who will have had 2 or more movies that they starred in or had lead roles in that concurrently played in cinemas in 2026. How does it feel to be a movie star?

Congratulations and I look forward to seeing Whalefall on release day! I'm totally getting the whale popcorn bucket.

Loved the trailer. Sperm whales are remarkable animals, and I'd love to know: did the crew work with cetacean researchers to get their behavior right? I watch a lot of ocean docs and this is the stuff that makes or breaks a film for me.

5

u/laadora12 10d ago

Any interesting and/or fun on-set memories from any of your works from over the years?

It must be so much fun to work on practical sets without green screen - but also so crazy to be surrounded by dozens of zombie extras while wearing zombie guts yourself to then being on a snowy set in Prague with bags of blood falling from the top of buildings (lots of zombies in your projects!) then being lubed up and swallowed by an entire whale head set piece in another project lol.

Also, the Primetime/Resident Evil lovers are waiting on the Skyler Gisondo/Austin Abrams buddy comedy… 🙏

12

u/action_juice 10d ago

What was more physically demanding: keeping all the weight off for Weapons or all the crazy sequences/stunts in Resident Evil?

3

u/Remote_Animal839 8d ago edited 8d ago

Hello there, Austin!
I want to start off with big congratulations to you, as well to the rest of the cast/crew for Whalefall!!! 🐋🎉

I am super hyped to be seeing it in theaters next week, especially as a student majoring in marine science and concentrating study in North Atlantic whales. It’s about time that sperm whale get their moment to shine in cinema! So following that trajectory, I have three big questions for you!

First,
I recall watching one of your interviews where you mention you actually had the opportunity to visit the Dominican Republic to swim with sperm whales— Did this experience end up influencing any changes or deeper insight to your role as Jay? Following that, do you think if you hadn’t visited and swam with these whales, your performance for the role would have ended up being different?
I love the dedication and think it is incredibly inspiring seeing someone put that much care into their roles.

Secondly,
What does playing the role of Jay mean to you personally, and what brought you the most excitement with being chosen to star as him? Do you see any characteristics in Jay that you see in yourself, and how did that shape your expectations and experience with other cast members and creating the bond between Jay and Mitt?

Lastly,
What do you intend and hope for audience members to take away from Whalefall the most? Whether that be a lesson, an insight, a personal reflection, or something else. I’d love to hear what you personally took from Whalefall, and its story, and are hoping to share with the audience when they leave the theater.

Once more, congratulations to you Austin, as well as Josh, Daniel, Brian, cast, crew, and everyone who was a part of Whalefall and its production, we are all here for the dive and cannot wait!!!🦑🐋🌊

Hey shawty, you’ve been in the scene for a while now & have done so many romance roles before your current projects. Have you thought about the fact that your romance roles didn’t quite garner the attention that your horror role did?

Have you seen the thirst videos that have been posted of you since Resident Evil?

I hope you are thoroughly enjoying your White Boy of the Month status. I know we sure are.

4

u/R4v3Girl 10d ago

Hi Austin! I really enjoyed Resident Evil, and it’s amazing to see your journey as someone who’s been a fan of your work for a while.

Would you ever consider working on another rom-com type of movie/show if an opportunity came your way?

I loved how you portrayed your character in Dash & Lily, and Do Revenge was a fun watch (and awesome to see you as an antagonist too lol).

15

u/babyboyhorse 10d ago

How did you teach the whale to do that

5

u/ham_solo 10d ago

You have very natural comedic timing. Did you do improv/sketch, etc to hone that? What kind of acting training do you do ahead of roles?

3

u/waterlilyblvd 9d ago

Hey Austin! I’ve loved all your work since Paper Towns and wanted to thank you for being give it your all as Bryan in Resident Evil (one of my favorite game franchises of all time), you were really brilliant. I’m super excited for Whalefall and any projects you have lined up for the future.
Do you have a favorite snack/drink to have on set? Do you have any rituals for getting into character?
e.g. listening to music your character would probably listen to, dressing up like they would, or staying in character between scenes.

5

u/lurkerstatusrevoked 10d ago

I don't have any clever questions that haven't already been asked - I just think you're SO, SO talented & I can't wait to see more of your work!!!❤️

4

u/delaneyyyr 9d ago

Hi Austin! Great fan of your work. I saw Resident Evil the other day and it’s safe to say I have a new favorite actor.

My question to you is: Do you wear wigs? Have you worn wigs? Will you wear wigs? When will you wear wigs?

2

u/ncndsvlleTA 9d ago edited 9d ago

Question for Austin-
A lot of actors talk about how when doing an emotionally heavy role, it can be hard to separate the character’s distress from themselves.
For example, Amy Adams has discussed how during her role as Camille Preaker, a troubled alcoholic who has to revisit her painful childhood, she would have trouble sleeping, wake up in a panic, and even started taking on some of the character’s anxious habits. She also said caring for and spending time with her family was one of the ways she attempted to keep the line between her and Camille from being blurred.

Playing Jay, a man with a historically tumultuous relationship with his father, who then finds himself in possibly the most unique life or death situation- Did you have trouble leaving the fear and pain you had to portray on the set? If so, did you have any ways of reconnecting with yourself?

(and if this actually gets answered Hi Austin Abrams, like everyone else here, I’m a huge fan ! Bryan Hodukavich was an excellent character, I can’t wait to see Whalefall :) and please tell Mr. Cregger The Civil War on Drugs remains some of his best work)

4

u/OliveGardenDumpster 10d ago

Not a question but so proud of you king you’ve been killing it and i’m so happy you’re finally getting all the love and recognition you deserve 🙌🏽❤️

4

u/SanderSo47 I'll see you in another life when we are both cats. 10d ago

Something I loved about Resident Evil is that your character is pretty much in every scene. As an actor, how challenging was that?

7

u/makuXrosu 10d ago

So if you are here that means you got out of the whale

5

u/Practical_Sky4905 10d ago

How did you enjoy working with someone as prolific as Josh Brolin? And did you learn anything from him. Thanks in advance !

3

u/Arbyssandwich1014 10d ago

I've been around a lot of people like James in Weapons. Your performance is great because it's so empathetic and accurate. What helped you get into that headspace beyond the weight loss? And what did you learn from the character?

2

u/kcup2417 10d ago

Hi, Austin! You’ve obviously played a lot of different characters over the span of your career in many genres of film/tv - from a love interest/normal guy in Dash & Lily, Euphoria & Chemical Hearts; assholes/bullies in Do Revenge, TWD and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark; to lovable goofs in more physically demanding action films like Resident Evil, Weapons and Wolfs.

So, a few questions for you: How would you describe your character in Whalefall? Is there any type of role that you find to be particularly challenging of the ones you’ve played so far? And is it ever difficult to switch from one type of character to the next?

3

u/mattmurdick 10d ago

Why would you do this to me, a person you don't know who has literally the irrational fear of being swallowed by a whale?? 😩😩 But seriously did you read the book before? Did you find it scary?

hey austin! congrats on Whalefall and everything exciting happening lately! i’ve been following your work for a while and it’s been so cool seeing the different roles you’ve taken on:)

you’ve played characters with such different personalities and inner worlds, and it’s always interesting seeing what you choose to take on next.

is there a type of character or emotional territory you haven’t gotten to explore yet that you’d really like to challenge yourself with? and did working on Whalefall make you want to explore anything new in your future roles?

7

u/brokenringlands 10d ago

hi! i’m a recent fan since resident evil, i loved you in that! i plan to see whalefall as soon as it’s out. i hope you’re having a good night.

i wanted to ask, are you influenced by specific actors when you’re doing your thing? if any, who? if not, what helps you get into that acting headspace? i’m very interested since i think you have spectacular range. i’ve even seen some people comparing you to christian bale when it comes to your weight changes for roles, haha.

thanks in advance for doing this (even if you don’t get to mine 🤞)

3

Would you rather… spend 10 min inside a whale or 10 hours alone in the ocean at night 😈

and who in the cast do you think would handle either situation best ?

3

u/regular_joe 10d ago

I was literally re-watching Silicon Valley this week and I totally clocked that the “carver” was you 🤣 just want to say you were awesome in that brief role

2

u/rainyspice 10d ago

Hi Austin!! Big fan. Here’s my question!

Jay Gardiner is forced into a situation where he has to keep going even when he’s terrified and overwhelmed. Many of your previous characters have also found themselves in intense or extraordinary situations. Has playing these kinds of characters ever changed the way you think about fear or resilience in your own life? Is there a particular role that has stayed with you or taught you something that you’ve carried into your life off-screen?

3

u/GargarsReddit 10d ago

Austin, I've read in other interviews you're a big reader, are there any books you'd love to see adapted to screen or any literary characters you'd like to play?

3

u/micromoses 9d ago

So I see they decided to have the squid as an antagonist, but did they ever consider having you and the squid reach a mutual understanding and team up to escape?

3

u/dsolodom 10d ago

Hello Austin! Do you still keep up with anyone from the Walking Dead cast?

u/AdInternal2037 9d ago

Super random question for Austin!

Q. What kind of music do you listen to, and what music would your various characters listen to! 😭

3

u/MixedEngineer01 10d ago

Hey Austin you good bro? A lot of movies with high intensity acting back to back. How do you make it through such a busy schedule?

2

u/sighcobaby 8d ago

Hi Austin! Long time fan of your work here. I’ve watched pretty much your whole filmography and most of your characters seem pretty cursed to endure substantial trauma. How do you manage to switch off when you’re not fighting for your life on screen?

Congratulations on Whalefall, and a huge well done for all you’ve accomplished this year. Proud of you dude! 🐋🦑

5

u/MOONGOONER 10d ago

What was your relationship with the whale like off camera?

2

u/Kennywolfgang 10d ago

Hey Austin! The trivia for the film mentions that you performed almost all of your own stunts, including the grueling underwater sequences in full scuba gear.

What was the single most physically demanding scene to shoot inside that claustrophobic environment, and did you have to undergo any specialized free-diving or breath-holding training to prepare for it?

2

u/peeyew3691 8d ago

Hi Austin! I'm a big fan and wanted to say thank you so much for your awesome work on resident evil! I'm a huge fan of the games and I thought the movie was so good i went to see it three times! I have a silly marine question :) What is you and the crews favorite marine animal? Mine is a spotted seal! Can't wait to see Whalefall when it comes to theaters :D

2

u/dogsocks666 7d ago

hi austin!! i actually just finished reading whalefall and quite enjoyed it. have you read the book? if so, what was your favorite scene in the book? did that translate to your favorite scene to act in? i really loved your work in weapons and resident evil and i can’t wait to see whalefall!

2

u/ethanbarmstrong 10d ago

Hey Austin! Big fan. My wife and I first saw you on Euphoria and loved the energy you brought, but we were super disappointed to not see Ethan return in S3.

Where do you think his character ended up? Did he pursue any further acting after that amazing performance as Cassie's mom?

4

u/Odd_Otter13 10d ago

How did the cast and crew approach adapting the book to the movie? Were there particular aspects that were top priority to preserve or translate in a certain fidelity? What types of tradeoffs did you debate?

2

u/Recent-Board-9383 10d ago

What kind of music/artists do you think Jay would be into? Also, in the book he mentions other sports/physical acitivites such as biking. I'm curious - do you think Jay would enjoy something like dancing or figure skating? Hehe. Thanks, Austin! :)

3

u/Noobybooby123 10d ago

If you could swallow any animal like the whale swallows you, what would it be?

2

u/AprilMarie707 8d ago

Hey Austin just wanted to say loved watching your journey through acting- started watching you in TWD (even though I hate what you did lol). Looking forward to more of your work! Sending love from Wa State! To your future success 🖤

What's another video game you want to see adapted to film?

2

u/Blind-_-Tiger 10d ago

Did you watch that Hercules the Legendary Journeys movie where he and Gabrielle (she's playing another character) get swallowed by a sea serpent and Hercules has to squeeze its heart to prepare for this film?

2

u/Park-Loey614 9d ago

Austin, how did shooting inside such confined, claustrophobic set space affect how you approached your performance? Did you have to adjust your acting style when acting with limited physical mobility?

2

u/audri_fs 8d ago

Well u prolly not gonna see my comment but i trully hope to see u more in Hollywood and honestly everywhere Because nobody deserves all of this love, support and appreciation more than you. LY🫶🏻

What was it like to play 2 characters who enter into the worst nightmare ever. One discovering an outbreak the other being swallowed by a Whale. What lessons do you take from both those characters?

1

u/cjoi17 9d ago edited 9d ago

Hi Whalefall team! 👋 Thank you for taking the time to answer questions! I’m excited to see your film.

Austin, the recent characters you’ve played, Jay and Bryan, both go through a transformative experience that makes them think about their relationship to someone and their regrets as they’re on the verge of dying. I was wondering if Resident Evil and Whalefall were transformative experiences for you. Did you learn anything new about yourself or did your view of the world change at all?

Daniel Kraus mentioned that in the book, Mitt says that we’re all searching for moments of awe or this feeling of being small, and that this allows us to recognize the existence of something big. Can any of you share an experience that reminded you of how small we are?

I was reading an interesting article by Atmos on whale falls and how the ocean is a “repository of history, memory, and unspoken stories,” and that it “bears witness to lives lost and transformed.” The ocean plays a huge part in the story. Daniel Kraus said Mitt’s religion and spiritualism was the ocean. The ocean is what seems to have divided and brought Mitt and Jay together. I’m sure Jay felt that heaviness when returning to the ocean and having this crazy experience.
Can you please talk more about the characters’ relationship to the ocean and how this project influenced your own?

u/Evalyn_doe 8d ago

Hi Austin! It’s such a lovely opportunity for fans around the world to have the chance to ask you questions and hear your answers.
I’ve admired your talent as an actor for a long time, and I genuinely find it amazing how effortlessly you seem to step into characters who are so different from who you appear to be as a person. You come across as someone rather reserved, yet in your performances in projects like Euphoria, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Do Revenge, and others, you transform into completely different people, and somehow, it always feels so natural.
I’ve noticed something similar when it comes to your appearance, too. You still have your recognizable features, of course, but I’m always amazed by how much you can transform your look in such a short time, from Weapons to Resident Evil, and now Whalefall.
I know that kind of transformation is part of the craft, especially for an actor as talented as you, but I think it would be really interesting for fans to hear more about what goes on behind the scenes. How do you approach becoming someone so different from yourself, both in terms of appearance and personality? Is there a particular part of your process that helps you connect with each character so deeply?
Thank you for sharing your talent with us! ♡

u/incrediblejonas 10d ago

How did you feel about the book whalefall? Had you read it before taking the part? What sort of stuff do you feel is easier to express in a movie than a novel and vice versa?

1

u/bortaS_DIb 9d ago

Hello Mr. Abrams, my questions are kinda dumb probably in comparison to everyone else's but I really enjoyed the stuff your in especially your role as James in 'Weapons'.

I see 'Whalefall' next Thursday when it comes to my theater and I can't wait. Especially after reading the book. I don't know if it's going to be in the movie. But how was it like working on set with Josh Brolin who plays Mitt with the dynamic between him and Jay (your character) or does this movie strictly just follow Jay and his suicide mission to try and retrieve his dad's bones.

My next question is: Did you have to mentally prepare to be in the water with the fake sperm whale head while you where you were filming or did it not bother you? (Coming from a person who has a fear of things like that even when fake and just diving in general even though it's really cool).

I'm really looking forward to all your future projects that you will work on. I just hope you don't have to do anymore ridiculous things for awhile even though it's your job. Lol. Also for some dumb reason I thought you were around my age (22) when in fact you are not- which isn't shade it's just me naively thinking maybe I had a chance to do cool things like you do in your movies.

2

u/ZainJelani 10d ago

Hi Austin. Loved your performance in Resident Evil! Are you a fan of the series or have you played any other survival horror games? If yes which ones are your favorite?

1

u/Adventurous-Many-443 9d ago

Hi, Austin! I hope you're doing well! It’s been amazing watching your journey on the big screen. I had already seen some of your work, like Weapons and Euphoria, but I feel like I really got to know you as an actor after your incredible work in Resident Evil.

It had been a long time since I felt so excited about and connected to a character the way I did with Bryan. I related to him SO MUCH — I would easily be him if a zombie apocalypse ever happened, haha. I loved the character so much that I’m actually finishing a fan art of him, and I’d love to be able to give it to you in person someday!

I’m also really excited to watch Whalefall. The movie is definitely bringing some of my phobias to the surface, haha, but I’m sure it’s going to be an amazing and fun experience — especially with you in it.

How did you feel filming the scenes inside the “whale”? Which scenes were the most challenging, and which ones were the most fun to film? From the trailer, I could already tell that claustrophobia was going to play a pretty big part, haha!

I hope I get to see you in Brazil for future premieres of your movies. It would be such a pleasure to welcome you here! 🇧🇷❤️

u/coffeewithapplepie 7d ago

Late question:

  1. Sacrifice (2015) is one of your more underseen films, but I found it unexpectedly interesting. In that film, there’s the whole RV sequence where your character fires a gun inside the vehicle. Then in Resident Evil, Bryan ends up in another RV with a gun, which immediately gave me déjà vu — especially since there’s later another scene where someone warns him not to fire a gun inside the car. Was that an intentional callback, or just an unbelievably specific coincidence? 😂
  2. Resident Evil and Whalefall have been my two most anticipated films of the year, and probably the two I’ll end up watching the most this year. I loved how Resident Evil drew from survival horror more broadly: I kept getting Inside, SH, Dead Space and The Evil Within vibes. I’ve also been waiting for Whalefall for about a year. The premise always reminded me a little of Witherow’s Feed the Pig lol, so I’m really excited to finally see it. I like Daniel’s Angel Down and Scowler too!
  3. Resident Evil also weirdly felt like a speedrun version of Werckmeister Harmonies to me lol and then Whalefall literally gives us the whale.

2

u/viisionary 9d ago

Hello! Question for Austin Abrams!

You’ve been pretty busy with Resident Evil and Whalefall. How do you find time for yourself while juggling two roles at once?

2

u/snas--undertale-game 10d ago

Hey Mr. Abram’s do you have a favorite soda? I really like Dr. Pepper zero. Or just any favorite drink in general? I really like Dr Pepper Zero and rum as well

2

u/Comic_Book_Reader r/movies Veteran 10d ago

About to see Resident Evil as of this writing. How/what was the process of you doing back to back projects with Zach Cregger (Weapons and then Resident Evil)?

2

u/Space_Hardware 10d ago

Halloween’s coming up. What was your favorite Halloween costume, or is there one that you had that amuses you in retrospect because of one of your roles?

2

u/Recent-Board-9383 10d ago

Hi Austin! If you had to pick one character you've played as to be stuck in a whale with, except for Jay, who would it be? Love your performances, dude!

2

u/GrassSignificant622 9d ago

Hi Austin, you've managed to stay off social media for so long. Do you think you'll ever make an account, or are you planning to stay social-media-free?

2

u/bongo1138 10d ago

You impressed the fuck out of me in Resident Evil. One of the best at balancing hilarious and terrified.

Was that scream really your scream? 😂

2

u/whiteshark70 10d ago

What’s it like to work with Creggor as a director? I feel like he’d be pretty funny and easygoing, despite making a bunch of horror movies.

2

u/Haubcon 10d ago

Hi Austin! My question isn’t too big but what’s your favorite sea animal? Thought it’d be appropriate since you’re getting eaten by one

2

u/YaMomsCooch 10d ago

What was your celebration meal after completing the shooting for Weapons since you had to keep all that weight off for almost an entire year?

2

u/Transformer_Jay 10d ago

In what scenario, in film, do you want to fight for your life in next?
I’ve enjoyed both Cregger films you have freaked out in so far!

2

u/whatsforsupa 10d ago

Do you have any awesome "behind the scenes" moments you could share about Resident Evil? Thought it was a great new take on the series.

2

u/BestAllAmericanTaco 9d ago

Do you play any resident evil or games in general? If so what all your goats or games you are playing currently if not resident evil?

2

u/rektorspectre 10d ago

Loved your performance in Resident Evil, did , Zach ever show you any gameplay? Would you consider playing them if you had the time?

2

u/xarchangel85x 10d ago

Your portrayal of a drug addict in Weapons felt insanely close to real life, how did you prepare for that role? Any inspirations?

1

u/moon_faeria 8d ago

Hi Austin! I loved you since Euphoria. It made me sad that you didn't come back for the third season. :(

Anyway, if you could reunite with any of your Euphoria castmates for a completely different TV project, what kind of show would you want to make together? I'd especially love to see you explore the horror or thriller genre in a more prominent way, and I think it would be exciting to see you reunite with Hunter Schafer in that kind of project. She's been exploring horror and thriller roles herself, and I think your acting styles could complement each other really well in something psychologically intense, unsettling, or even supernatural. A dark mystery or an atmospheric horror series starring the two of you would be so interesting to see! Is that a genre you'd be interested in pursuing, and would you be open to working with a former castmate again in a completely different setting?

2

u/boardsteak 9d ago

Just saw Weapons and thought ha this guy looks familiar. Then bumped into this post. So from witches to whales...what's next?

1

u/pastelxpixel 9d ago

Hi Austin! 🩷 I have a question about Whalefall: Without giving anything away, what was the most emotionally challenging part of playing your character, and was there a moment on set that stayed with you even after filming wrapped?

Also, I just have to say this: I’m a HUGE fan of yours. 🥹 Your role as Bryan in Resident Evil genuinely came into my life at a time when I was going through a really difficult period and had so much to emotionally process. That movie and somehow especially Bryan, gave me something to look forward to and helped me through more than you could ever know. So in a very dramatic fangirl way… you kind of saved my life a little. 🥹🖤
And now, after all of this, I somehow ended up with the biggest girl crush on you. 😭💕 😂🩷
Thank you for giving me something to fangirl about when I really needed it. 🥹

1

u/ctnjyr 9d ago

Hi Austin! I'm a huge fan of your work in Resident Evil, and I've been going through your previous roles as well. I'm a huge Resident Evil fan, like, massive and I just want to say you really did incredible as Bryan. Like me, I'm sure a lot of new fans have been flooding in from the Resident Evil movie, considering its success! :) I'm super looking forward to Whalefall and I plan on dragging my friend with me.

You seem like a really great guy. I hope, for you, it doesn't get overwhelming at times, but I could totally understand if it does.

My question is super simple, and you probably get asked this a ton of times, but do you have a favourite role you've played, out of all of them? Or, have there been any roles you've felt were it was particularly difficult to get into character?

Have a great week, if you see this, man. Keep being you. ! <3

1

u/bwahwam 9d ago

Question for Daniel: Hi Daniel! I was a bookseller when Whalefall was first published and remember stocking it on the new releases table, falling in love with the cover and then in love with the story! What was your immediate response when Brian approached you about a potential movie? In my head I thought it was one of those stories that could only really work in the written form, but am very happy that I stand corrected!

Question for Austin: I absolutely adored your characters in Wolfs, Weapons, and now Resident Evil. In your opinion, what about you or your acting processes make the audience want to root for and also be hopeful for your characters despite all odds? Incredibly excited to see you portray Jay when the movie gets released in Australia next week, I have no doubt you'll be stellar again!

Have a lovely day everyone!

1

u/Zealousideal-Toe1357 9d ago

Hey Austin, I really loved you in Weapons and Resident Evil, and I'm so excited for Whalefall! It's one of my favorite books I've read in recent years, and I'm so excited to see how its unique storytelling is brought to life on the big screen!

I wanted to know if you've taken any lessons from your experience working with Zach Cregger on Weapons and Resident Evil and applied them to working with Brian Duffield and Daniel Krause on Whalefall, and if you'll be taking any lessons from Whalefall and applying them to your future projects, preferably ones where you can be happy and don't have to go through the worst day of your life lol.

Anyways, I'm excited to check out Whalefall; it's my most anticipated movie of the year, and I'm excited to see where your career will go after two back-to-back leading roles in Resident Evil and Whalefall.

1

u/Helpful_Actuary_6184 5d ago

Hey there, pal! First off, happy belated birthday, bud! I just wanted to hop in here and say I am an extremely huge fan of your work, especially after watching Weapons. Honestly, James is probably my favorite character in general, not just in that movie. You absolutely killed it as James, man, you were just awesome.

Hey buddy, I wanted to ask you a quick question because I am dying to cosplay as James one day. What was the exact outfit you wore in the film? I've been trying to track it down everywhere, but I somehow can't find the specific brands for any of it, especially the shoes. If you happen to remember the shoe brand, shirt brand, jacket brand, cap brand, or anything else from that look, I would seriously appreciate it, eh!

Thanks for taking the time to do this AMA for all us fellas here on Reddit, you're an absolute legend!

2

u/Conscious_Test_7954 10d ago

Hi Austin. Thank you for doing this!

Are you a gamer? And if you are, what's your favourite game or game franchise?

2

u/Happypunkclown 10d ago

What was the most claustrophobic scene you had to film? I felt like I couldn’t breathe just watching the trailers.

1

u/Habit-rabbit 7d ago

Hi Austin!! I actually discovered you through Resident Evil, and Bryan quickly became my favorite character. I’ve been watching your interviews ever since, and somehow you’ve managed to become my first genuine celebrity crush, which was definitely not on my bingo card 😭
I’m also really excited for Whalefall! As someone who’s absolutely terrified of deep water, the premise is basically my worst nightmare brought to life.
I was wondering, since Jay goes through such an intense physical and emotional experience, what was the most challenging part of portraying him? And did filming Whalefall change how you personally feel about the ocean?
Anyway, I just wanted to say that I genuinely love your work, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the film! Wishing you all the best! :)

1

u/MysticForestCat 9d ago

Hi Austin!
One of the most incredible things about your career is how much of a chameleon you are. You can go from the sweet and endearing Ethan in Euphoria to a complete villain in Do Revenge, and now to an everyman survival anchor in Whalefall and Resident Evil.
When you approach a character, how do you completely change your internal energy and mannerisms so thoroughly from role to role?
It feels like you entirely disappear into them.

or

Given that Josh Brolin plays your character Jay's father in flashbacks of the story and considering the fun fan comments about Brolin previously 'beating you up' in weapons lol
how did you two build that father-son dynamic for such a high-stress survival movie?

1

u/Disastrous-Pain-7765 9d ago

Hey Austin! I absolutely love your work and have been a fan since The Walking Dead, I however did not hate you for shooting out Carl's eye, it made him even more badass but sucks Ron had to die for it lol! I am a huge fan of the RE series and seeing you make such an impact on the series with your character makes me happy as a a loyal fan to the series, so thank you for giving us fans a hell of a performance! My question is a two parter so here goes.

Q. First off, how does it feel being the guy who is always going through something in his roles?

And second, if YOU personally had to spend a day in one of your character's shoes between Ron from TWD, Bryan from RE, James from Weapons, and Jay from Whalefall, who would you spend your day as? (Despite some obvious demises LOL)

2

u/MobileResident5527 10d ago

What’s the most interesting thing you learned about whales, the ocean, or marine biology from the process?

2

u/Frajer AMA MVP 10d ago

Do you ever get a script where your character is placed in a situation and you're like oh no not again?

1

u/lalallaur 9d ago

HIIII AUSTIN! i’m so excited for you and all of your recent adventures in your films!! i remember watching you in paper towns and dash & lily and i knew you were someone to look out for! this film looks incredible, thank you guys and i’m so excited!! my question is:

Q: when you play a certain role do you ever make music playlists that you think your characters would listen to? i think it’d be pretty fun to imagine what they’d be listening to considering you’ve played so many different kinds of roles! even if it’s not music specifically, are there any little details/facts you like to create about your characters that help you to embody them more and let you understand their personalities better?

thank you!!!

  • lauren :)

1

u/gravestonebabe 7d ago

Hi Austin! I have been a fan of yours since PaperTowns and have enjoyed seeing all your recent work. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this, I’m so excited to see Whalefall!

  1. I know that the last couple of projects you did were a mixture of action and horror. Do you enjoy working in this type of niche, or would you prefer to explore other genres?

  2. I know that you are somewhat of a method actor, and a lot of your recent roles have required not only physical change, but also it seems a lot of exertion on your end. How do you maintain your sense of self when acting in such intense roles, and how do you ensure that you are physically and mentally in a good place?

Congratulations again on all of the success!

1

u/PlentyAffectionate10 1d ago

You fucking killed it in resident evil I knew ya looked super familiar.

Wanted to ask if you how did you make it so believable the distress you were in. To being bit to almost being at the verge of death so many times…

What not necessarily set you apart from other actors that set you apart from other characters is how you really specialize in those oh shit moments….

Between this movie and last you really not only have me at the edge of my seat but it’s HOW you go about it…. It what feels like your everyday guys reaction to being in one of those holy shit moments….

Is it all improv atp? Are the directors giving you creative control on how you handle those situations? Sorry if I asked 2 questions in one.

1

u/Neither_Arm3374 9d ago

Hi Austin! you were absolutely amazing in Resident evil and I can’t wait to watch Whalefall once it comes out. I’ve checked different movies you were in and I love how versatile you are and that you’re able to bring out different personalities for the roles you play. My question is how do you get yourself into such different characters and bring out completely different personalities for each role? And as someone who’s working toward becoming an actor myself, what advice would you give to someone who’s just starting out? Also, do you ever finish a role and feel like you could’ve done better or that your performance wasn’t what you hoped it would be? If so, how do you deal with that and use it to improve?

2

u/LordovtheVoid 10d ago

What is a dream role you would want to play or a director you would like to work with in the future?

1

u/marimarzii 9d ago

hello austin! i hope you’re doing well! i’ve been a great fan of you since your appearance in the walking dead! you were phenomenal in it, i liked you again in ‘scary stories to tell in the dark’ and i liked you even MORE in ‘weapons’! you’re in quite a few horror/thriller projects, and you also die in all of them. does having such traumatic endings for the characters you play ever have an impact on you as a person? not only are the characters you play in these projects in very unfortunate situations, but you like doing your own stunts. so are you, austin abrams, doing okay? or do you just have genuine fun and love being put through hell? 😭 love you! you’re awesome and so admired! <3

1

u/hashbrowngk 9d ago

Hey Austin! Super excited for Whalefall (amazing book) -- been a fan since the Euphoria days and excited to see you again in theaters so soon after Resident Evil!

I read through a couple of your past interviews, and your process of getting into character was super interesting to read about. I was wondering if there was anything different in your process for getting into Jay Gardiner's headspace compared to an original character like Bryan? Since it's an adaptation, I can imagine you have so much more source material to work with, but did you find that more helpful when you were building the character or were there some extra details you imagined beyond the realm of both the script and original novel?

1

u/Delicious-Fee4874 10d ago

Hi Austin, Marie here ,countryside girl, lover of simple things and getting to know the person behind the public image. 😊
I really like your work, but honestly, I’m probably more curious about you when the cameras are off.

So here are my questions:

What would the people who know you best say is the most unmistakably “you” thing about you?

If acting suddenly disappeared for a whole year - no pressure, no expectations, no one watching - what would you actually want to do with your time and life?

And what’s one completely ordinary little thing in your everyday life that never fails to make you happy?

Can’t wait to see more of you in the future.
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

Hello Austin!

I’m really looking forward to watching Whalefall, especially after hearing there are plenty of practical effects used throughout the film.

As a movie buff, I have to say, Resident Evil was such a thrilling and fun experience. It brought me so much joy to watch.

You seem like such a genuinely sweet and down-to-earth person, and your passion for what you do really shines through. I was wondering, were there any documentaries you watched or books you read or listened to about divers and their experiences with this physically demanding activity to help give you some background knowledge for the role?

If so, would you mind sharing the titles? I’d love to check them out!

1

u/chickenwings0318 9d ago

Haii Austin, new fan here after watching Resident Evil and now planning to watch more of the movies you were in (just finished Wolfs and now planning to see Whalefall)! Directors have been saying you prefer doing your own stunts and even go as far as being more risky than intented. Do you have some sort of routine physical training to stay fit and committed for those stunts or do you just rely on adrenaline rush and get on with it for the love of the game? It's also impressive how you were able to "shapeshift" physically, like I never recognized you as James from Weapons in the RE movie.

Hoping to see you more in game adaptation and horror movies! (Fallout series and Sirenhead perhaps? )

2

u/spitefulvisuals 10d ago

What was the ratio between practical and CGI, And was it difficult navigating through the props?

1

u/catmosaic 9d ago

Hi Austin! Hi Josh!

Austin, first I want to compliment you on your work on Resident Evil. I can't imagine how much pressure it must be to carry a movie like that as the lead actor and you did such an incredible job. I was in awe after watching it and thought you were incredible in it. Going through your filmography, you've had the opportunity to work with a lot of great actors and directors. Is there anyone you haven't worked with that you hope to one day work on a project with?

And for Austin and Josh, how was it reuniting on a project after working together on Weapons? Were there any challenges working on Whalefall or was it easier to come back and work together?

1

u/blakieu 10d ago

Hi Austin,

I wanted to congratulate you on taking over Cinema this Autumn, it's been wonderful watching your progress from when I was a teen seeing The Walking Dead to now witnessing your success in Resident Evil and Whalefall, I'm really happy you're getting the appreciation you deserve as an actor.

I'm going to ask some questions in this thread but just thought I'd shoot my shot with a silly little request... My birthday is on Monday (Oct 12) and I was wondering if you could make my year by wishing me a happy birthday?

Thank you so much, I'm looking forward to watching Whalefall as a late bday celebration!

Best wishes,
Bee (aka Blake)

u/LittleBitterPrincess 9d ago

Hi Austin! Mainly wanted to tell you that there is something about you that taught me two important life lessons:
1. Think before you judge.
2. There is telling, showing and being with “being” the most impactful.
Thank you for those life lessons.

Q: I read that you were a shy child. How did you feel when you had to gradually overcome that when your parents sent you to acting lessons?

I am shy myself but because of my job where I’m working with small children, I have to sort of put on a different persona which can be tiring sometimes. It can often hinder my abilities to make deep connections. Any advice on coping with those jittery feelings?

u/AdThese618 9d ago edited 9d ago

Hi, Austin!! You did absolutely amazing in the Resident Evil Movie. I loved Bryan so much. You did a wonderful job at making him feel relatable to how everyone would’ve reacted if they were in zombie apocalypse!

A question I have is…what were your first impression/thoughts when you got the role to play Jay? Did you use any methods to help you work with understanding your character? It’s wonderful how much you’ve came along. I’ve been here since you played Ron in The Walking Dead. Keep up the good work and dedication!

I’m very excited to watch Whalefall next Friday! I hope you’re well after these continuous interviews and events!

Just finished the incredible 4dx experience front and center! Brian, your films from Underwater to No One Will Save You and now Whalefall are so good at putting ordinary people into impossibly hostile environments and making us feel every second of it. Daniel had you seen those and knew Brian was the man for this isolated survival horror? Austin, between Resident Evil and now being swallowed by a whale both in the span of a month you may be cinema’s most convincing guy having a shitty day like seriously do you need a hug? How did you and the team work together to make Jay’s suffering feel not just physically intense, but emotionally human? At any point did either of you think, maybe we’ve put Austin through enough? Lastly for Josh Brolin, you've played so many iconic characters from main to supporting. This one so grounded and human, was this role cathartic to play?

Hey Austin, it feels like things have been non stop for you lately with all the events you've been attending for your latest two films, what do you like to do in your free time/after all this to relax?

I'd also like to say it's been really inspiring watching you act over the years and I'm so glad you're finally getting the appreciation you deserve. I'm turning 25 next week and I've finally decided I want to change career paths and pursue my childhood dream of acting, do you have any advice, tips or words of encouragement?

Thank you for this opportunity for us fans to ask questions.

Best wishes, Bee/Blake

Hi Austin!! I have noticed (and genuinely am appreciative of the fact) that you have done a fair few roles that involve practical effects and stunts, which are becoming somewhat fewer and further between with the increased push for AI everywhere. I would love to hear from you about what specifically draws you to these roles, what you enjoy about them, and what is maybe the most difficult/challenging about them (apart from the obvious effect of them being physically taxing). Also self-indulging a little and throwing in that I have been a fan since Euphoria and had a fucking blast watching you in both Weapons and Resident Evil, congrats on everything :)

I heard you on a podcast with Zach talking about Gaspar Noe and coming off like you're into some really deranged/deep cut films. So my question is what are your thoughts on modern horror/thrillers/etc? Anything newer really catch your attention?

Anyway, congrats on RE and all the success to Whalefall. You've been a joy to watch.

Hi Austin!! Congrats on the recent success of having two movies come out in quick succession! I’m really happy that you’re finally getting your well earned recognition as someone who’s been a fan since I first watched The Walking Dead. You’re an incredible actor and I can’t wait to see you in more projects.

There’s a bit of context to my question, I’m an aspiring filmmaker currently studying film production and I was wondering what is the best way to get into the industry and get my name out there?

That’s really my only question and I hope both you and the Whalefall team have a great day!

What perspective has the role and journey of Jay given you that you can take into future professional roles, or potentially your personal life? Do you feel like you’ve learned a lesson from every character you’ve played?

Austin, thank you so much for breathing so much life into your work! You are such a fun performer to watch and I appreciate how much you’re able to make audiences fall in love with you. You are incredibly talented and a real shapeshifter with a great ability to make every character very endearing and that is not easy to execute. I wish you nothing but the best!

Hey yall, several questions for anyone who’s done their own stunts. What was the most physically taxing stunt you’ve done? What was the most rewarding stunt you’ve done? Have you ever done a stunt that didn’t make it to the final cut?

Again, this is a question for anyone. Have you ever developed a fear after doing a movie? Like if the set had live bugs, and you realized you’re actually terrified of bugs. Or if you’ve done a shoot in a very tight area and realized you’re claustrophobic. Something like that.

Final questions to anyone, what’s your favorite part of the movie making process, and what’s your favorite genre to write, act, direct, produce, etc?

Congratulations to another finished movie! I hope it’s a great success.

Hello Austin! Loved all your recent projects!!!

Both Whalefall and Resident Evil place your characters in extreme, hyper-isolated environments where they are forced to confront their pasts and their fears. But they have completely opposite dynamics with family: Jay's nightmare is tied directly to the grief and memory of his father, while Bryan's nightmare begins because he's trying to run away from the responsibility of becoming a father.

My question is: If they could talk across timelines, what is one piece of advice Jay could give Bryan about facing family responsibilities, and vice versa?

Hello Whalefall cast and crew, I'm ready to be absolutely drowned by this feat of a movie!

My question is directed to Austin as I've been absorbing a large part of your body of work for years now, so it's incredible to see the intensity you've always given to your roles elevated to such an astounding level!

I can't help but run a thread between Resident Evil's Bryan and Whalefall's Jay being pretty opposite ends of fatherhood. I wanted to ask if these overarching themes for the films (especially given the timing proximities of both projects) influenced the way you portrayed either character?

Hi Austin. First of all, I feel sorry to see your characters go through so much torment and tragedy in Weapons, Resident Evil and now Whalefall. I have read the book by Daniel and think that it's just phenomenal. My question to you is, did you do any research for the character of Jay Gardiner by talking to real life survivors of animal attacks or victims of accidents at the sea, or was it based solely on the book interpretation?

Also, do scripts with the character having a bad day draw you in more than others?

Once again, huge fan and looking forward to seeing you in future projects!

hey everybody! i've got 2 questions if that's possible :D austin, i've been following your work for quite some time now, and i was wondering, out of all your past characters, which one do you think would be the best and worst to be trapped in the whale with jay?

and this time, a question for brian, the director! as austin mentioned before, we know the head is actually real, so i was wondering, how difficult was it to direct him while filming underwater? was it challenging to work with the head in that environment?

thank you guys! and i can't wait to watch it on october 15th!

Hi Austin!! It’s so awesome to be able to ask questions!! Congrats on all of the movie success and the amazing portrayal of Bryan in Resident Evil!! 🫶🎉

I remember seeing you for the first time accidentally shooting Carl’s eye out in the Walking Dead and then seeing you portray James in Weapons!! You were always super cool to me! (Sorry for the small yap, you’re one of my favorite celebs!!)

Q: As someone who wants to get into film and acting, what is the best method that has worked for you to get into character and what is your favorite genre to work with??

1

u/blo0drodent 9d ago

Hii! First, I just wanted to say how much I loved Resident Evil. It’s one of the only movies I’ve seen in theaters that I would genuinely go pay to see again. I kind of fell into a depressive state for a while and lost interest in pretty much all of my hobbies, but Resident Evil honestly helped me fall back in love with movies again—as well as going to the theater!

I have two questions, if that’s okay: What’s a genre that you haven’t done yet that you’d like to be a part of? I’m also curious if you would ever consider starring in a TV show again?

Hi Austin. Thank you for doing this Q&A with us. We love you lots! My questions are a bit personal and kind of similar to some others that were asked. As an actor we see you are a “ chameleon “ and love to fully disappear into your characters. I love that! We know you lost weight for weapons and gained weight for resident evil. What was your diet/ physical prep like for both of these films? I’m curious to know how much weight you lost/ gained for these films? ( sorry it’s personal ) and lastly: Do you have any other movies coming soon to us after whalefall?

Hi Austin, I hope you get to enjoy the New York autumn between all the Comic Con press! You were already such a standout in Weapons, and even more impressive anchoring Resident Evil basically solo. Really enjoyed how you brought a distinctive personality and voice to Bryan while communicating a universal player experience to film.

Sort of in the opposite direction, I was curious to know if you had any interest in game roles, or voice and motion capture roles in general? Would you find these challenging, given the importance of physicality to your performances?

u/rrgteews 9d ago

Hi Austin! Big fan. Big fan. The way you deliver comedic lines might be my favorite delivery style. I remember sitting in the theater watching Resident Evil and laughing audibly. Same thing happened when I watched Weapons. It isn't easy to make me laugh. I very much enjoy your performances and hope to see you in many more movies to come.

Anyway, what was your favorite memory on set? If you could go back and pick only 1 memory keep forever, which one would it be?

Can't wait to watch Whalefall. You're killing it. I hope your future gets even brighter.

Hi Austin! I made this Reddit account just to enjoy your AMA! I saw you in Resident Evil and it quickly pushed you to the top of my list when it comes to favorite actors and favorite movie of the year. I'm wondering where you pull inspiration from when applying yourself to a new character? Do you feel you try to relate to most of your characters or rather try to fill their shoes independently like a blank slate? Bryan from RE was such a relatable character and just wonder how much of you and your personality shines through in your portrayal of him.

u/Glum_Lime1397 10d ago

Hey Austin, I really loved your portrayal of Bryan in Resident Evil this year. Not only was your character hilarious, but he was also extremely likeable and relatable, which is rare when it comes to horror movie protagonists. My question is, what stunt in Resident Evil did you find most difficult to perform? And, another question, when one of the practical blood bags fell from a crane and nearly hit you in the Racoon City scene, was the reaction in the movie your actual reaction to that moment, and did that moment deter you from doing future stunts?

Hey Austin, big fan! I have a phobia of the ocean, do you have any phobias?

This one's for the gaffers. How the hell do you light the inside of a whale?

Hey Austin 👋 from the UK

Whats the last film you watched at the Cinema?

u/Competitive-Lab9730 9d ago edited 9d ago

I’m presuming that this film involved a lot of acting alone and had a different level of physicality needed than you have had in other roles (you were #sick in wolfs and RE).

How did you begin to prepare for the character in terms of getting yourself into the headspace for it?

I know you mentioned that it’s not a particularly lonely thing to act on screen by yourself because you have the crew and there’s other people that you’re bouncing ideas off of but is that not a hindrance when you need to be a guy suffering in a whale?
