Is it just me or were there an insane amount of time skips/jumps in this.
Felt like a ton of scenes were left on the cutting room floor.

Guile losing to Vega with absolutely no combat shown was mind blowingly weird.

I was totally on-board with everything in this movie, until that part.
And then story and 'tournament' if you can call it, just rapidly fell apart.
27
u/Farthousejones 1d ago
Yeah that kind of was the turning point now that I think about it. Second half was really directionless and messy. All those people just randomly dropping out. I mean I get it ... the tournament was just a ruse to get everyone there. But that's such a weird ass plot to have in Street Fighter.

100%.
It's like... Bison has weapons capable of capturing Ryu, and was able to find him, so it's not like he needed to be drawn out with a tournament...
I could forgive it, if the movie didn’t fall apart, because I wasn't expecting uber tight plotting, but just deliver on the set up.

Biggest one was about 70% in, when Ken unmasks himself as infiltrating the jail to save Ryu.
How did the movie go from Chun-Li telling him about Bison’s plan to that, did I miss something?

u/SnickySnacks 1d ago
The non-existent Guile/Vega fight was the oddest choice in my opinion. I would have liked to see that, since Guile barely got any fighting time.

She told Ken to step up basically, he agreed eventually, and we were suppose to assume she told them about this grand plan to help him escape between that conversation and him showing up at the prison. Which is weird cause I barely had any impression Ryu couldn’t escape if he tried.

u/AdSolid1577 1d ago
that pacing was all over the place. i get they wanted to cover the tournament and the backstory but it felt like watching a highlight reel at some parts. shame cause the fights themselves were actually decent.

I thought the back and forth was just for anime fight development but then the rest of the movie just kept getting more and more confusing. No fight with Bison was just the shitty cherry on top. Shame. I really enjoyed the 1st act for what it was. I have no idea why they didn’t just commit entirely to the tournament setup.

u/ean6625 1d ago
I thought the same. The second half felt rushed like if they trimmed at least 30 minutes just to keep the pace. It starts to get confusing as to the passage of time and how characters get from place to place, like one moment they’re fighting in the tournament and the next they’re advancing the story. Making some of the tournament fights occur offscreen was a baffling choice.
48
u/SpartanDetermination 1d ago
Weirdest part was where Chun-Li looks distraught and defeated in one scene, and it instantly cuts to her walking confidently to her first meeting with M Bison. Was just so weirdly cut because the tone completely flipped.
To be honest the editing in this movie reminded me of the first Suicide Squad movie. Like if you notice how the movie was edited, then they did a bad job of it.

People seems to be split about the fight scenes. IMO Ken vs Dhalsim, onsen fight, ken vs ryu in the hotel were great.
Chun Li vs Vega and Juri could've used more lights and fewer cuts, ditto Ryu vs Ken alley fight.
Parts of the prison break fight were memorable. Blanka and Okuma fights were fine. Will say Ryu's double aerial kick to Blanka was cool though
But we missed out on Guile vs Vega??? Come on now. Also I think we could've used much, much less of Dan and none of Kyle Mooney.
I do like the 3 MC actors though.

They really made it a point to ensure we knew it was the year 1993 at the start of this movie, only to feature a lot of music that came out well after 1993. They even referenced Taco Bell gorditas, which were introduced in 1998. And how were they singing karaoke to 4 Non Blondes in 1986? I realize this doesn't necessarily mean anything in terms of the movie/story being good, but I was so distracted by the 90's nostalgia inconsistencies lol

One of the things that frustrates me the most with adaptations of video games is how they seem to refuse to use the soundtracks from the games.
The animated Mario movie did the same thing, throwing in modern songs in the background instead of the iconic music from the games.

And she's acting NOTHING like her videogame counterpart. I think the writers really, really, really wanted to have Juri Han on this movie. But they couldn't because this is Street Fighter 2 (she was introduced in 4 IIRC) and she also hates Bison, so it wouldn't make much of a sense for her to work with him.
So they made the worst possible choice and create a weird chimera of a character. She looks like Cammy White, but under the hood is Juri Han.
Cammy White giggling and walking like Harley Quinn torwards Chun Li. What the hell is this? Cammy White is even colder than Chun-Li in the games.

This is one of the horniest PG-13 movies in recent years, from Ryu vs Honda in the Sauna, Cammy flirted with Chun Li, Don Sauvage licked Cammy’s boots, a dweeb designed Chun Li’s outfit to the M. Bison sniffing Ryu’s feet in the prison, somehow, I cannot believe this is a PG-13 movie.
75
u/Fireboy759 1d ago
Don't forget the scene immediately before the Sauna fight, where Chun-Li is entering a steamy shower fully naked on-screen (without any naughty bits showing)...
...which then transitions to Honda's man boobs out on full display

This movie was Street Fighter 1.5. Between the events of SF 1 and SF 2.
I would've loved this movie if the last half was as good as the first half. They set up a fighting tournament and then nearly all of it happens off screen or everyone forfeits. Off screen. In a movie based on videogame series about tournament fighting...
This cast deserved better. Except for Jason My mama name me Jimmy Mamoa.

This wasn’t a “good” movie but idk it felt so…. authentic? It didn’t feel like the type of safe 2010s-2020s blockbuster you’d expect it to be. The way they commit to the look of the games even if it’s impossible to make look good in live action, the effort put into the animated sequences, how unapologetically juvenile and politically incorrect its sense of humor is, the “Part 1” ending as if they know 100% they’ll get a sequel, the repeated oddly specific sex gags, the little weird shit the actors and extras do, etc etc.
I feel like many movies these days do feel like they’re something AI could easily copy someday(not saying that most movies feel AI, don’t take that wrong) but this shit just felt so specifically human made in a way not many other movies like this feel if that makes sense
→ More replies (2)39

"Authentic" is a good way to put it.
Felt like it had actual people understand the assignment on stuff fans wanted to see out of a fighting video game movie - even if fans themselves are not the best judges of filmmaking. I'd put it right up there with the original 90's Mortal Kombat movie. It's rough, it shows, and definitely not perfect, but in a very charming way.

Dhalism and Honda are the surprise mvp’s of this movie (honorable mention goes to Sagat as well). Their roles are played mostly straight but with enough humor to be the most charismatic of the entire cast. Imagine if the entire movie matched their characters’ tone, or at least a larger ratio of the cast.
To me, the most interesting part of this movie was the true origin of Ryu’s evil intent. That was something completely new that caught me off guard, as a longtime Street Fighter fan. That’s pretty much where the creativity begins and ends for the film.
The lighting during some key fight scenes was just bad. Chun/Vega/Juli fight just looked like a bunch of shadowy blobs. And the harsh blue cast on the Ryu/Akuma battle just pissed me off.

I mean them singing and bonding over What’s Up by 4 Non Blondes is a major plot point and that came out in 1993, the year the movie takes place. But they show them singing it in flashbacks from the 80s. Such a lazy fucking movie. He-Man has way more relevance with that song and even they had a little restraint and only used it for a short gag.
Less egregious since it wasn’t being played in universe, but playing Many Men when Balrog fought was so stupid and out of place. We know it’s 50 Cent, we didn’t need a giant neon sign pointing it out.
Lends more to the idea that this relied on stunt casting.

Street Fighter is a mess of a fun movie!
- Andrew Koji as Ryu and Noah Centineo as Ken Masters are a fun duo with sibling rivalry.
- I don't know why Andrew Schulz was given such a big supporting role. I feel like someone like Paul Walter Hauser or a good actor could have done a better job
- I loved the flashbacks told in animation. It felt like a really good creative choice and a homage to the games
- The movie had a a few comedic moments, especially Eric Andre and Kyle Mooney being freaks
- I don't know why they put the tournament in the movie and made it a huge part only to show like 2 fights. I can't help but compare it to Mortal Kombat I where they did a similar thing.
- The fights were okay but the highlight for me was the bathhouse fight
- The editing of the movie was very bad. Too much cutting back and forth with Chun-Li's scenes and Ryu's & Ken's scenes
- I watched this movie in IMAX and the Chun-Li's fight scenes were normal ratio while Ryu's whole prison subplot was in IMAX ratio. With both of them cutting back and forth, my eyes were getting a workout and it reminded me of Transformers: Last Knight
I think it is a one-time mindless fun watch

I was surprised at how 2000s Michael Bay this felt in humor. I haven’t seen a big budget film get as politically incorrect as this did in years. Gay jokes, sexist jokes, race jokes, etc.
But then I can’t say it was a movie for right wing chuds either because it also got hella homoerotic and had a whole bit dedicated to making fun of gooners lmfao.

Noah Centineo was a hard sell to me as Ken but the scene where his hair is down (no half up manbun) made him look extremely Ken so I was satisfied.
Waste of Cammy to not put her in any fights. Even Dan fucking Hibiki was in one, and he didn’t even actually fight!

It's a really messy movie, like a season worth of television put into a two hour movie. It really should've been a tv series. Editing is all over the place, tones clash regularly between serious and comedic. The fight choreography is good, you can really feel the hits. Everybody does a good job with their characters. But I'm a casual, not a fan. It does the same thing as the first Mortal Kombat movie and where it's a more of prelude to a bigger story. It's 6/10 for me, fun, campy, cheesy, very flawed.

When Akuma showed up I was thinking “oh wow they really trying to adapt Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Akuma will kill off Bison and then it’s Ryu’s fight”. In that moment I was giving the film writers way too much credit.

Maybe I'm just a generally happy guy but I really liked the movie. I dont over-analyse these things and I just sit back and enjoy it for what it is
I really liked how when they hit things the camera shakes, and on especially hard hits the sound in the cinema was so loud enough that you could feel the bass or whatever that sound wave is. Music is really good as well.
In parts of a fight where they do damage like when Ryu is getting his head slammed into the brick wall by Ken the camerawork is chaotic and really adds to the cool factor of the fights. Normally you'd think about "damn how is that realistic" but at this point you've seen them tank much harder hits and shrug it off so you just enjoy the show
Its generally unrealistic, but I walked in expecting that from a movie about a game where people can shoot energy waves and a villain that can literally fly. Its super cool and thats enough for me
If I had to complain, I was a bit disappointed a bit when it fully skipped the Guile vs Vega fight and guile just suddenly lost. I also almost missed that Vega dropped out of the tournament in the 2nd round since it was just casually mentioned. I imagine that fight would definitely happen in the sequel though along with Cammy vs Chun-li
Definitely a "sit back and dont think hard about it, just get hyped" movie. Ending sets up for a next one which is understandable because it is a business, and I liked the tonal shift of how they did that out. Classic "get in the car lets hit the road" style after a crazy fight

Wow, what an inconsistent movie. Visually it looked good, and the characters looked as accurate as you could hope for. Nice Easter Eggs.
The fighting choices were so weird. Guile and Zangief do one attack? The tournament essentially happens off screen. The fights they do show cut really fast, and often jump between multiple fights at once.
Plus I find it weird how the specials from the game are just clear and away better than the ones in a movie. The Hadoken is suppose to be this great attack in theol movie, closer to what the games view the shinku Hadoken. But the Shinku Hadoken in the game really emphasizes and sells it in a way the movie doesnt. If you are pulling from the games, I would think that would be an easy thing to copy.
The animation was spectacular, but jumping back into animation for a 10 second scene was disorienting.

The casting is easy to explain, at least for me. They clearly wanted to invoke Raul Julia, the actor who played Mr. Bison in that awful Van Damme Street Fighter movie back in the '90s. They saw how much people loved Raul Julia's performance and thought, "Let's do that again."
The problem is that the screenwriters are so completely detached from reality that they couldn't understand WHY people love Raul Julia's Bison.
Raul Julia was dying of stomach cancer and undergoing chemotherapy during filming. He knew this was going to be one of his final roles, and his son was a huge Street Fighter fan, so he decided to give the performance everything he had. That's why his Bison is so fucking entertaining despite being wildly inaccurate to the game character. The man committed to the bit with every ounce of energy he had left.
But these stupid fucks apparently thought you could just cast some random skinny guy, have him do whatever the fuck he wants, and people would magically love him because "Raul Julia did it."
That's not how it works.

My main complaint is that the fights had no consequences. It became a series of things happening without the plot progressing to the point of feeling tedious.
The movie failed to make me care about anyone, which is hard to do. I’m easily swayed by movies generally. So I also didn’t care what happened to anyone.
The plot was all over the place. They should have picked one main villain. Maybe save Dastmalchian as the main villain for the sequel. Make this movie about the tournament with Akuma as the main antagonist with Bison still funding and hosting the tournament and commenting on the fighters.
The stuff with Akuma felt so unimportant because Bison was the way stronger antagonistic presence in this movie, and it just felt so anticlimactic for the movie to end with him just driving away.
I did enjoy the animated scenes and the movie did get a few chuckles out of me here and there.

I feel like I would like this movie a lot better if Akuma showed up early just to perform the raging demon on Dan. That way, I would never have to suffer another minute with him.
Every scene is worse just by his mere existence.

They nailed the tone and the visuals, but the forced and unfocused plot ruined the second half. It would've been much better with a simpler plot, a more straightforward tournament format movie

Is it better than the 1994 live action movie?
Street Fighter 1994 was awful, but in a good way. One of the best bad movies I've ever seen.
Is it a good bad movie like the 1994 version or a bad bad movie like the Chun Li one?
By the way, is it true that the movie has no ending? That would be awful.

The Tournament
It's so bizarre that the World Warrior Tournament is theoretically the backbone of the plot, but is actually largely inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Let's just consider Ryu for a moment; at the start of the film, Ryu has sworn off fighting, to the point that he refuses to fight back against Chun Li and Ken. So, in theory, the moment that Ryu decides to become a fighter again is a major turning point. That point is his fight with E. Honda... a fight which ultimately means nothing. Ryu has no relationship with Honda, he just wants Honda's spot in the bracket, but Ryu also doesn't care about winning the tournament, he's just trying to stop Akuma. It's not even clear how this would help him do that - Akuma says that if someone else wins the tournament, he will appear to fight them. Does that mean that if Ryu won, then Akuma wouldn't show up? That doesn't make any sense, Akuma's whole goal is to fight Ryu. So it doesn't matter if Ryu joins the tournament because Akuma will show up and the two can fight regardless, a statement that I know to be true because that's exactly what happens! So this moment of Ryu becoming a fighter again is empty because he's fighting to join a tournament he doesn't want or need to join, and in fact never joins! I saw someone say it’s because he wants to protect Ken because he doesn’t want Ken to win… so why wouldn’t he just fight Ken for his slot in the bracket?
I have to imagine that there were some bizarre rewrites, because Ryu's relationship to the tournament is so strange. Bison starts the tournament just to lure Ryu in to defend his title (which Ryu also doesn't care about), but then he sets up a bracket without Ryu. Then Ryu forces his way into the bracket, only for Bison to capture him before the tournament starts and force him to drop out. It's so messy and makes both characters look kinda stupid - if Chun Li can just track Ryu down, and if Ryu can just be captured by tasing him unconscious, why does Bison need to bother with the tournament at all?
As I just touched on, Akuma doesn't care about the tournament either, he disregards Joe entirely because he actually wants to fight Ryu. Bison also doesn't care about the tournament because it's a ploy to capture Ryu. Chun Li sortof care about the tournament as an opportunity to get close to Bison, but that goes out the window because Bison doesn't even come to watch. Ken sticks with it the longest, but the movie makes it real clear that his hunt for glory is just a mask to hide his pain and his whole arc leads up to him dropping out, so he also doesn't really care about the tournament. So that's 3 protagonists and 2 antagonists, none of whom actually care about the tournament. Considering how insubstantial the tournament itself even is - 3/8 of the participants drop out - it would be shockingly easy to rewrite this whole plot to cut out the World Warrior Tournament altogether.
Worldbuilding
The Hadoken and Shoryuken being treated as these extremely limited and outlandish techniques is disappointing and also more than a little thoughtless. This is a world where Honda can do flying Sumo Headbutts and Zangief can leap a dozen feat in the air, but a big jumping uppercut is outlandish? I'm reminded of Dragon Ball Evolution; it's weird and disappointing to treat these extremely common features of the lore as things the characters need to earn and can only do sparingly. This isn't just an aesthetic complaint, it's the core issue with Chun Li's story. Her superiors want to extract her because they don't believe her claims about Psycho Power and Bison's plans. Then why did they even insert her to begin with!? Joe doesn't back down when a demon man manifests from a cloud of energy in front of him, but Interpol doesn't believe that the evil mad-science dictator they're investigating is doing evil mad science? It's a world where there's too much inconsistency between the bizarre and the mundane, so nobody seems to take things seriously; then why should I?
The Dark Hado
Ryu's whole story is about his struggle with the Dark Hado, but the movie does a terrible job of establishing why the Dark Hado is... bad. Like, I know why it's bad in the game lore, and I understand that a "Dark" energy that makes your eyes glow red is very simple shorthand for "thing that makes you evil." But what does the film actually do to show the audience why the Dark Hado is bad? Ryu uses it to defeat Sagat, which establishes that the Dark Hado makes you powerful and violent... but he's in a fighting tournament. It's a setting where those qualities are entirely acceptable - the fact that he is crowned the winner indicates that wounding Sagat didn't even violate the rules. The film reaches for some kind of profound moral conflict - Ryu says that refusing to give in to the Dark Hado means protecting his honor - but it's incomprehensibly muddled. It's one of the things that makes the stakes really unclear, Ryu is constantly struggling against a thing that only ever seems to help him - avoiding the Dark Hado means letting Gouken die and becoming a lame vagrant who sucks at cooking, giving in helps him defeat Sagat, Blanka, and Akuma. It really feels like the film just wants the cool parts of Evil Ryu but has no idea what to do with the inner turmoil that comes with it.
Zangief
I'm a Zangief main. I'm allowing myself this brief portion to let my bias show and say that I was profoundly disappointed with how little he's in this movie, especially considering how incredible Olivier Richters looks as him.
Chun Li
Chun Li's is the most coherent protagonist of the three but her story is so scattershot and overcomplicated. She wants backup for a vague operation to capture Bison for vague crimes. She brands herself with his mark (Which I'm fairly certain nobody else has), and successfully gets an invite to watch the tournament with him, but then he ditches her because he captured Ryu - except Ryu was captured before the branding, so wouldn't he already have changed his mind before the invite? It's probably just bad editing rearranging scenes, but the way it turns out, it makes it look like Bison already suspected her as a traitor and made her brand herself for no reason. In fact, everyone's so suspicious of her that it seems like her cover was always blown, which makes her seem less competent. She leaves to meet Interpol only to beat them up and go right back, after which her entire plan is basically kaput and I have no idea what she's trying to do. She latches onto Ken for some reason? I keep calling Chun a protagonist because major parts of the plot feel missing without her - she's the one fighting Bison and his inner circle, whereas Ken and Ryu barely interact with them at all, but she has no relationship with Ken and Ryu and her whole conflict basically gets sidelined by theirs after a certain point. Maybe it's more accurate to say she's a side character who got elevated way too far.

First things first, I had fun with this movie. It reminds me a lot of Twisted Metal tv series, it is not necessarily for everybody but I felt like this movie really captured the spirit of the video game itself, especially during the 90’s, for better and worse. I like the energy of this movie and felt like the cast and crew enjoyed their time during the production, I also like how they used animated sequence for flashbacks, somewhat refreshing. The trailer and premise sold this movie as Ryu and Ken movie first and foremost, I felt like the writing and the characterizations of Ryu and Ken were pretty decent, Ken’s Hadouken during the climax felt earned. Chun Li characterization was not as deep as Ryu and Ken but Calina Liang had a great screen presence as Chun Li, every time she was on screen, the movie felt so captivating.
EDIT: I just wanna give a shout out to Dhalsim in this movie, he was also the highlight in this movie, I enjoyed his pressence, especially when he fought Ken in this movie, I hope he got bigger role in the sequel.
Since the movie set in the 90’s, the humour felt pretty erotic and juvenile but weirdly, I almost don’t have any problem with that. The editing felt kind of frantic in some scenes like during Chun Li vs Vega & Juli and Ryu and Ken prison escape, but most of the action and fighting scenes were good. This is kinda nitpicking, I know this is a Ryu and Ken movie but I understand if some people were upset when some characters were sidelined, Like Guile fight that happened off-screen. One more thing, Dan Hibiki. I enjoyed his characterization and how the character incorporated into Ryu and Ken story, I wished he was played by other actors.
All in all, I had a good time with the movie, one of the better video games to movie adaptations for me, 🤞 for the sequel

This movie feels like it’s written and directed by a 12-year old on a sugar rush. Nothing is given a chance to breathe and the juvenile humor every 60 seconds just does not land. My theater was stoically silent for nearly all of this. It’s crazy how frenetic this movie is and yet they still end it in the middle of act 3 without any real conclusion.
That being said, I did enjoy the fights. The characters and sets looked good. I liked the anime sequences and most of the music choices. I felt like they got the action, style and tone mostly down but the rest of it just did not work for me.

I see a lot of people online saying this movie is “for the fans not the critics”
Okay well I’m a fan. I love street fighter to the point of entering SF6 tournaments. This movie is an awful mess. The editing is just all over the place that it feels like it straight up skips scenes. Zangeif for example is hyped up for the tournament but once the tournament begins he’s just not in the movie anymore. Cody Rhodes as Guile felt so good near the beginning but he doesn’t have a single fight scene. His tournament fight is skipped. The plot is just trying to handle so many things at once and doesn’t even resolve most of it! This movie just suspects it’s going to get a sequel that will deal with it instead.
The fight scenes are cool when it’s not CONSTANTLY cutting to Eric Andre and Andrew Schulz reacting to things in such an over the top way. Sure, quipping is fine. Improv is fine. But when every single person is doing it in every single scene… it just makes this whole thing feel like I’m just watching people trying to do stand up when this is supposed to be a Street Fighter movie.
It’s also a little distracting with the license music is playing in pretty much every single fight, whether it’s a goofy one or serious one. I really don’t need to hear Who Let the Dogs out or What’s Up being louder then the sound effects of the fights.
The anime scenes were cool tho. Wish the whole movie was like that instead.

I thought it wasn’t like some crime against cinema, but it wasn’t particularly great. Ryu/Ken were really good. Some decent fights but nothing that topped MK2. M. Bison was all over the place, the actress that played Chun-Li wasn’t particularly good and the sheer number of needle drops in this movie were obnoxious.

I think the trailer was better. The one that came out 5 months ago, has Ken's scream timed to the 4 Non Blondes song, Chun Li says bitch please. It was definitely selling me a movie I wanted to see.
This movie was not that. I put a lot of it on the editing. Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Callina Liang, they all had the juice. It was there on the screen, but the pacing, the story, and the overall feel of the movie was way off.
I don't really care about Street Fighter but I was excited to see this movie. Now I really wish I hadn't.

Chun-Li: I’m dedicated to getting revenge on Bison
Brands her hand to stay close to Bison
Fights her own team to keep getting close to Bison
Fights Bison and gets knocked out for a bit
Wakes up to find Ken on the ground and somehow knows what on earth is going on with Ryu
Completely forgets about Bison during the fight with Ryu
Bison just gets away
Such a bad movie
You could have removed Chun-Li from that final fight and nothing would have changed.

As someone who doesn't know anything about Street Fighter lore and has only played SF6, I enjoyed the movie a good bit. The fights were impressive, it was way funnier than I thought it would be, and the cast had great chemistry... but I really wish the script was tighter with the story. The cutting back and forth between the tourney, Ryu as a captive, and Chun Li's spy plot made it feel jumbled. The biggest highlights of the movie were whenever all the characters were together. Would have definitely been a better movie if they focused on the tournament and let everyone play off each other.
I could see it working if Ryu stayed in the tournament and seriously tried to win it so he could fight Akuma and defeat him. Have him and Ken in the final bracket, Ken wins, and then they team up on Akuma together (with some help from other fighters) and have Ken unlock his Hadoken as the finishing blow. They can still keep the same ending with the sequel bait, saving Bison to be a villain in a 2nd movie (if this one performs well enough at the BO).
Overall, even though the story was messy, there was plenty to enjoy and I would show up for a sequel.
(Also, I saw this in 4DX and good lord, they may need to turn it down a tad 😅 I'm 6ft and 250+lbs and there were a couple moments where I would have been tossed out of my seat if I didn't hold myself down with the armrests)
