Are we finally shifting back from faces floating on a poster to actual designs? Because I've been noticing a trend recently, and I'm liking it.

u/976chip 1d ago
My guess is the marketing team is leaning into the horniness surrounding the movie by making the new poster look like the cover to a Harlequin romance novel.

u/Kanadark 1d ago
When I worked at a pioneer village, we used to have a company that would book the village for photo shoots a couple times a year.
They'd bring in like 4 ladies and 4 guys and pose them in Amish outfits in front of the barn or on the porch, take a bunch of photos with all the combos of ladies and gents, then put fake pregnant bellies on the women and take photos with the men, then gents and gents, but never ladies and ladies for some reason. Then they'd dress them in Victorian clothes and go do the same thing. Then pilgrim clothes, highland clothes, Edwardian clothes, anything that could conceivably have a farm or old time building in the background.
I'm not sure which company the covers were for, or if they were stock photos the photographer sold, but the photographer said he couldn't keep up with the demand.

u/mrskoobra 1d ago
I listened to a great podcast once where they interviewed a pair of women who made a ton of romance novel covers. One was the photographer who would go out and pick models and pose them and take the reference pictures, and the other was the painter who would use the reference to create the cover as desired by the author/publisher. It was super neat to hear about the process and how the shift went to text covers and now AI and how it's driven out the artists.

the horniness surrounding the movie
Is the horniness not coming from inside the
housemovie? It's about a woman who commissions a fuckable basket457
u/girlbones25 1d ago
"It's about a woman who commissions a fuckable basket." Is this the official TV Guide summary? If so, I'm in!
429
u/your_average_plebian 23h ago
That's basically the premise of the plot. Single woman bullied by her partnered fellow villagers commissions a husband, gets said husband, a sentient wicker animatronic who is sweet and handy and respectful and puts her through the mattress, much to the chagrin of their fellow villagers. Shenanigans ensue.
153
u/Chosen_Chaos 20h ago
a sentient wicker animatronic who is sweet and handy and respectful and puts her through the mattress
Well, that description took a swerve at the end...
58
u/your_average_plebian 20h ago
Would it interest you to know that said mattress-putting-through is what causes the major narrative conflict* between the couple and the villagers? Because the villagers definitely agree with you on this 😂
*from what I remember from reading the short story this movie is adapted from

I agree. I never knew until this thread that people thought floating head posters were new? Perhaps people just haven't been paying attention? Or maybe it's just this one guy who thought that.

A floating faces poster for this movie would be tough when it is largely about 2 characters. They’ll definitely keep doing them for ensemble movies though.
43
u/jjfitzpatty 1d ago
Saw a 8-foot tall cardboard setup in AMC yesterday that was just his wicker face. So striking the image stuck in my head more than any other poster. Floating face does the job in this case.

Indies have had great posters this whole time. Check out the posters for directors like Yorgos Lanthimos, Ari Aster, Robert Eggers, Guillermo del Toro, etc.

u/shookney 1d ago
Indies, but named directors with major studio backings lol
55
11
u/xX_7HR0W-4W4Y_Xx 1d ago
you're right, they should have named the recent indie darling "un délicieux petit tas de crotte"
64
u/carpentersound41 1d ago
Maybe there are less ensemble cast films? Marvel and other blockbusters like Dune will always do that because every person is contractually obligated to be on the poster. So these smaller budget films have more freedom to design? But yeah I agree, I think I’m noticing the trend too.
16
u/Kriss-Kringle 1d ago
If you're referring to official posters, then yes, but there are plenty of sites that make great alternate posters that are licensed, like Bottleneck Gallery, Phantom City Creative, Vice Press etc.
Mondo used to do a lot back in the day before stopping and focusing on toys. In fact, I believe they were the ones that started the alternate poster business.

This is perfect. A "Harlequin Romance" type cover knowing their target audience.
Romance books are some of the best selling books right now. Embracing the market for higher quality than Hallmark movies seems like a good choice.
Just hope they don't make Morning Glory Milking Farm into a movie. That needs to stay far away from existence.

I don't understand what the recognitio revulsion is for. It's a perfectly wholesome romance book. About a girl down on her luck in a cohabitative monster world who comes across a job opportunity to milk minotaurs to use their juices for scientific reasons. One of the minotaurs peaks her interest and becomes a regular until one day she runs into him outside of work. Shenanigans ensue.
If you remove the fact that her job is giving hand jobs to minotaurs is a pretty wholesome meet-cute. Just very horny

The amount of people on this post commenting like it's a revelation "wow, almost as if it looks like a trashy novel" ... when it's actually identical to one, no subtlety there. :)
But it's perfect. It sounds like this movie knows what it is and leans heavily into it. It will find a solid audience.

when will we have a handsome man falling in love with a monstrous woman
31
24
u/ChartQueasy9391 22h ago
Makes me think of "Ready Player One" where in the book the female lead is supposed to be heavy set with a large port-wine stain on her face. But of course in the movie they made her conventionally attractive with a small birthmark around her eye.
→ More replies (1)57
u/TheThingInTheForest 20h ago
The problem is that, as concepts, “monstrous” and “handsome” aren’t as distinct as we think they are. Typically for a “beauty and the beast” story to work in modern times the “beast” has to be “monstrous” enough to be strange and alien but “human” enough to be attractive in the ways that matter. The “monstrous” man in this image isn’t that monstrous tbh. His skin is weird, sure, and maybe made of wicker I guess? Yet the shape of his face is handsome, he is tall, has broad shoulders, a full head of hair, is well groomed and well dressed etc. In other words, he’s no Nosferatu. I bet he even smells nice.
If the man in this image is “monstrous,” then so are plenty of female characters in media who are still seen as sexy, and are desired by men, despite their equally strange, “monstrous” and/or alien appearances. Gamora from Gaurdians of the Galaxy, Starfire in the OG Teen Titans show, Mystique from X-men, the Na’Vi’ woman in Avatar etc.
It is RARE that any media has a man or woman develop an actually loving relationship with an actually ugly monster. Monsters must be sexy to have human love interests in modern fiction- this is a universal rule. Even Shrek isn’t “hideous.” Ironically, the most monstrous monster to score a human baddie in a film that I can think of is Disney’s “Beast” from “Beauty and the Beast,” who isn’t actually ever hard to look at and is a fully human stud muffin by the end of it anyway.

Monster fucker books usually succeed because the monster treats women better than men treat women. They don't need the woman to cook, clean, make babies, and stay quiet. They provide for her and protect her without judgement. Also they're big and strong and usually got massive schlongs but that's like, tertiary.
62
u/SplurgyA 23h ago
The bit where he breaks the bed from fucking her so amazingly, then notices the bed is broken, then declares he will fix the bed for her (without being asked!) 👌👌👌👌👌
36
u/Kumirkohr 23h ago edited 20h ago
It’s a damn shame too, because they always follow the formula of “He’s the first person to ever treat me with kindness, so I’ll get over the fact that he’s [insert non-human element here]” and never “I want someone that’s [REDACTED] and [removed by moderator] because I’ve tried it with humans, and it’s just not enough”
We need MCs that are first and foremost freaks on main of their own volition, and not freaks by circumstance
