News TikTok Permanently Bans the ‘Musk’ Film Account, Raising Suppression Fears
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/politics-news/musk-movie-tiktok-banned-theaters-showtimes-1236734308•
u/Foojira 5h ago
This is INSANE we should be so much more furious about musk than we are
•
u/swankpoppy 5h ago
Remember when Elon went a huge rant about how Twitter should be a place of free speech and free media, defended by the first amendment? And how they wouldn’t censor opinions? And we all kind of knew that just meant he could use it as a propaganda machine, but that he was using free speech as an excuse to get his way? Well that same guy banning accounts based on free speech used against him by his personal opponents sure is a bad look after all that noise…
•
u/StryctNyne 5h ago
This was shortly after he was spotted at the Super Bowl sitting next to Rupert Murdock. This is exactly what he told him to do and told him to say. Rupert knows how important controlling the news is and that Twitter is THE news for the younger generation. They don't give a flying fuck about hypocrisy, and probably find it funny.
•
u/Shepherdsfavestore 5h ago
I have a few friends that are addicted to twitter and they’ve become way more right wing since Musk took it over. I watched them get brainwashed in real time and they didn’t realize it was happening because they said they were just there for sports.

u/Dottsterisk 5h ago
In situations like these, blatant hypocrisy is often an expression of power.
They don’t even need to pretend to be consistent, logical, or fair. They can do what they want.
→ More replies (2)•
u/claimTheVictory 1h ago
Exactly.
It's not complicated.
The First Amendment exists precisely to hold tycoons like Musk accountable.
It's not there to let him control the speech of others trying to hold him accountable.

Rupert was also with Larry Ellison on the first day of Donald Trump's second term in the Oval Office. Like the guy who bought CBS, CNN, and TikTok USA. Also, Zuckerberg put Dana White, the UFC guy and very close to Trump, on the Meta board—the Meta that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Kinda related but it’s going to be a great day when Rupert Murdoch croaks. The family better cremate him when that happens because in a just world people would piss and shit all over his gravesite for what he’s done to media.

It's not hypocritical to them, it's just "I get mine," and makes perfect sense to them to flip when it's convenient.
Basically it's not hypocritical as much as it's unethical.
•
u/krelly200 5h ago
Ya, he's a free speech absolutist, remember? /s
•
u/Falcovg 5h ago
He wants absolute free speech for himself, and absolutely none of it for those who are critical of him or his actions.
•
u/CompetitiveProject4 4h ago
So a man who wants freedom for no one except for himself. A man who wants nobody to have choice.
A dictator.

As long as you say what he wants you to say, he’s absolutely for free speech.

u/nocolon 4h ago
“Free speech” to him is just the ability to say the N word and disparage trans people.
→ More replies (1)•
u/Cephalopod_Joe 4h ago
"Free speech" to the right has always been about them being able to say whatever they like without any pushback or criticism. Their idea of "free speech" fundamentally requires censorship.
→ More replies (1)•
u/manachar 4h ago
I think this is partially their position, but it’s important to dig a bit deeper.
Free speech for conservatives means freedom to say things that support their in group and especially the idea that their in group is or should be in charge. It’s about affirming a social and economic hierarchy.
For example, their humor is highly based on punching down to out groups that are “bad”.
They only “punch up” when they see the “up” as an out group unworthy of wealth or power.
So they’ll satirize “out of touch Hollywood elites” or even just call them ugly names.
But they aren’t too big into anything that questions their avowed hierarchy.
They felt that “politically correct” was preventing them from trying to keep out groups repressed or ridiculed into conformity.
Make fun of the family that has weird smelling food long enough and they stop bringing it in for lunch at school or work.
Basically, I have learned that if conservatives like something it’s probably about affirming their beliefs. Anything that challenges it is unacceptable and should be not spoken about.
It’s why Gay Pride parades piss them off.

This is your daily reminder for those of you that still:
Have a Twitter account
Own and buy Tesla’s
Own and buy Tesla and SpaceX stock
Could sell/delete your account/block the domains TODAY. And I know you people are out there. Twitter still has too much traffic and traction in our world. When I go outside, there is a Tesla parked every 2 or 3 blocks.
Undeniably, there are a tremendous amount of people that hate this guy and what he is doing to our world yet STILL puts money into his pocket and keeps him relevant. Just stop. We could make this guy irrelevant tomorrow if all the people who have strong opinions of the guy, would just stop inflating his bank account.

•
u/DeLousedInTheHotBox 1h ago
It should shock and appall people that the world is essentially being run by a handful of narcissistic rich people who are trying to shape everything to their petty preferences and egos, but people are so defeated that they've basically given up. Nobody has the energy or will power to battle against these guys any time they flagrantly abuse their power and make our lives worse.
And that doesn't take into account all the people who support Elon Musk mostly out of spite, they hate the elites who abuse their power and wealth, except for when it is an edgelord who's "owning the libs"
•
u/ChironiusShinpachi 44m ago
That can be our excuse. Won't change the fact that economic hardships are taxing on populations. Even in this case where it's being done on purpose, we're being pushed towards American Civil War 2: Redneck Regards, or WWIII: Nuclear Boogaloo. The wars yes, but the economic and monetary crashes incoming have been planned out.
This comes with another crisis being pushed hard, climate change. The point being depopulation because personal wealth, esp beyond reasonable lifetime use, is apparently more important than working together as a species.
The people driving this have 1 or 3 of the 4 dark tetrad traits: narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and sadism. I feel like most people who are ok with hoarding money while people are in need have at least 1 tetrad trait. The wealth, in turn, exacerbates those traits. The audacity to pretend that the rest of the country doesn't need to be minimally comfortable (housing, food, physical health, education, mental well-being, everything we don't have now to promote having children) is not just ignorant, it's suicidal.
They all understand what happens when the people are regarded as disposable or worse a nuisance. They aren't historically illiterate. They pretend they're self made while clearly not growing/preparing their own food, healthcare, infrastructure, energy, water/plumbing, the list goes on of things they require others to handle while they be "brilliant" or whatever. They act like everyone is just too lazy and/or too stupid to make our own piece of the pie while multinational corporations move in everywhere and soak up market share with their ability to charge bottom dollar thanks to their secured supply chains. They act like we lowly peasants are to blame for the offshoring of manufacturing to SE Asia, disregarding the resulting immiseration. The lying, the crimes, the alienation of the rest of the world in a bid to get the people back on board with imperialism so they can send us to war in other countries to secure natural resources for our ungrateful but somehow very deserving overlords.
Making $50/hr from age 18 to retirement makes you under $10 million in your whole lifetime. Just a tiny piece of the framework to our systemic problems people don't think about when considering these things. Tip of the tip of the iceberg. Not that it's everyone's fault for falling for the propaganda, the massive disinformation campaigns by our countries and others, the uniparty, the backward way of thinking they manipulate populations into believing. Hell, I only got caught up in the last 3 years on who, what, where, why, when, and how we came to be in this current world situation. Didn't know I had the capacity and didn't know others didn't. I've even worked out what seems like a workable path forward, only issue being getting people caught up and agreeing on the finer details. We have the technology to have a real, informed/intelligent democracy. I'd type it out but damn I write a lot so I'll hold off, said most of it in my comments over the last couple years, but we can do it...takes getting our hands dirty, stop taking the disingenuous arguments of people who never had any intentions of acting in good faith, and prioritize those who want to work as a species and not those apocalyptic, selfish types and their familiars.

He definitely will not and I have no idea how anyone can be so naive as to think he will be given the long, medium, and short view of justice in this world. Nothing short of actual revolutionary action in the streets (we’re talking French Revolution here), where people are being extra-judiciously incarcerated and murdered, will produce the result you are suggesting confidently will occur within the next 10 years.
we’re in a cold civil war and it’ll be over by the end of the decade
Yes, one that so far that people like him own the board, own the minds of the people, the opinion shaping platforms, and the infrastructure of communication. It’s a Cold War where he wins it in 10 years if you don’t make it a hot war now. That is why you sound so naive.

I can’t believe he’s still so popular with conservatives—MAGA conservatives, mind you—when he’s been documented in the files e-mailing Jeffrey “New York Financier” Epstein, THAT Jeffrey Epstein, pathetically begging him to be invited to one of Jeff’s ‘craziest parties’ wink wink.
It was both incredibly cringe and nauseating at the same time, but because he’s one of the richest people in the world who owns an entire social media platform that he can use to launder his image and spread narratives, he’s basically covered in Teflon.

Meta has just been caught interfering with the elections here in Brazil. Their algorithm was pushing the far right content in a much larger scale. They claim it was a technical issue
We're 8 days from deciding our future president and the left candidate had his account suspended "by mistake"
One congressman with 20M followers here was getting more views and engagement than Kylie Jenner who currently has 380M.
They're everywhere they need to be and there's not stopping. No consequences either.

Interesting that it was Brazil because years ago there was an expose of TikTok instructing staff to censor the front page of anyone fat, ugly, poor, or expressing anti-nationalist sentiments. And the whistleblowers were from Brazil.

Nah, Meta most likely has been on it for a long time and people weren't noticing.
Bolsonaro's supporters are pretty stupid, same as Trump's. If they found out Flavio has been abusing kids a lot of people would still vote for him. His supporters are mostly dumbasses. The ones who are smart and still vote for Flavio are just really bad people.
There's a good chance that once Flavio's wins, he will do everything in his power to no leave anymore - the Bolsonaros love to imitate Trump.
The far right already has the senate and congress. If they're allowed to get the presidency as well, we're looking at a very possible dictatorship.

Do any of these companies understand the Streisand effect by now?
You know what they can’t ban? People talking about the ban. Even more effective marketing.
•
u/unhiddenninja 5h ago
It's not about preventing everyone from seeing it, they're shielding their low information voters. The people who don't seek out any news but assume that "if it's important enough it'll show up on my feed". The people who attend Trump rallies. It's to further insulate them from reality. They don't care about us non-loyalists.
•
u/Yukie_Cool 5h ago
But the news of this getting blocked most certainly will show up on peoples’ feeds. That’s the definition of the Streisand effect.
•
u/DirkDirkinson 3h ago
Case in point. The only reason I know about this film is because of these headlines about it being banned. I literally have not heard a peep about it outside the headlines of it being censored.
•
u/farnsw0rth 4h ago
The news of the ban might Streisand its way into people’s feeds. The account is still banned though, so anything it wanted to say through that account will not.
Like, I could like “hot goddamn, did you hear they banned 1984 and Mein Kampf at the same time? Fuckin crazy, amirite” except I still can’t acquire and read those books so all I know is they are banned, not what they contain.

u/HardcoreKaraoke 4h ago
The Streisand Effect only matters when it is covered by the mainstream media and spreads throughout social media. TikTok shutting down the ad isn't going to be covered in traditional media and it isn't going to be a story that X promotes either.
When every major social media platform and most traditional media outlets are owned by MAGA sycophants it's easy for stomp out any Streisand Effect. You won't see it covered outside of maybe MSNOW but it won't be close to the headlines with everything else going on.
Also the average TikTok user would be more swayed by seeing the actual ad. They don't care about traditional media.

The fact that every social media company is suppressing this should be enough reason to get rid of all billionaires
•
u/raincntry 5h ago
And herein is the issue. When the republicans screeched about “free speech” on social media, they were mad that vaccine deniers were being shut out. That was an attempt to ensure the public received accurate information in a health pandemic. Here, this is nothing other than protecting Musk. There is no valid argument other than fear of reprisal, which is EXACTLY why it is important.
•
u/tayroc122 3h ago
Also most people who cry about free speech just want to say the 'n-word' or other slurs and don't get that they can, there's just a rightful social penalty because most people have moved on from bigotry.

•
u/SimonBarfunkle 2h ago
To be clear, the US didn’t take it over, Larry Ellison took it over and is friends with Musk, and TikTok suppressed and artificially promoted tons of stuff before he took it over. It’s not good that this is happening, but there are other platforms where you can easily see it, unlike the full suppression that happens in China. This will likely have a Streisand effect and lead to higher viewership. If I were Gibney, I would be thrilled at this gift of publicity. No one watches full documentaries on TikTok, so it’s the marketing that is being suppressed. Again, not good, but in a free market, if the demand exists, someone will want to capitalize on it. And for projects where there is no existing demand, it’s unlikely those would get suppressed across the board in the first place. But if we want that to change and require all companies to allow certain content, then we need to demand changes to the law, and we have to accept the bad content with the good, provided it doesn’t break other laws.

we started losing this battle in 1996 when the Clinton administration decided to allow corporations to own as many media outlets as they wanted.

The Ellison Media Empire is now TikTok, CBS, CNN, HBO, Discovery, TNT, TBS, Warner Brothers, Paramount and New Line Cinema.
Add on Eron Musk destruction of Twitter and Jeff Bezo’s Washington Post, Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal and New York Post the right wing oligarchs have bought our media for this exact type of thing.

Babe, remember when Jeffrey Epstein was found guilty of trafficking minors and then Elon asked to go to his island like four years later?

u/Sundance37 5h ago
lol, free markets remember?
Seriously though, the irony of Musk pretending to be a “free speech absolutist” attempting to silence critical speech is pretty much the free spot on my bingo card.

So much “freedom” and “free speech”, fellow patriots. Are we feeling free yet?

Not really shocking, though. TikTok, owned by Larry Ellison, who runs in the same circles as Elon Musk. Who would’ve thought? Billionaires protecting billionaires. 😱 What a surprise.
Just another reminder of the direction this country is heading in, unfortunately…

People need to get themselves and their families as far away from these companies as they can asap.
•
u/NewTypeDilemna 5h ago
Its not a "fear" when its being enacted. It is reality. TikTok in the US is an arm of propaganda for the current administration. It also shows how deeply unpopular these people are. They control all of the major media, including organic media, yet they are still facing a landslide loss in the midterms.

I am certain I'm seeing less political content on reddit than I used to and I didn't change anything about the accounts/subs I follow. I'm pretty sure I'm seeing more crap that I want to scroll past so they can show me more ads.
•
u/JaySayMayday 5h ago
I got suspended a week or two ago by Reddit, they rolled out new site wide automation tools. If you say specific things it'll get your account suspended by their new AI tools. It also wipes the post or comment.
I have no idea how much is getting removed but I'd rather not test it and find out after getting smacked twice
Edit, forgot to mention I said negative things about the appearance and mental capacity of Elon, without going into much more detail because I don't feel like getting suspended again
•
u/InterestingDamage621 3h ago
Well let's test it out. I'm already banned from politics and pics for unexplained reasons, so here we go.
Elon Musk looks like an overstuffed cardboard box wearing a "big boy" toupee, and generally has the expression of being 10 seconds away from being medically required to sniff another one of his own farts. Also he has no friends and will die alone.

Elon musk is a Ketamine addict, incest looking man baby, his fact ugly cheeks look bolted on to his vampire face, his laugh of a retarded duck makes my flesh ripple in discomfort.
He's one of the most hideous disgusting individuals ever to walk this earth, his fat baggy skin bunched up all over like a pork roast wrapped in string.
He can't answer a question without his brain shirt circuitingbfrommall the drugs in his system.
And he can't handle a fucking joint.

Elon Reeve Musk…. What can I say about the elongated muskrat that hasn’t already been said.
Well. I don’t like punching down, and I’ve never met the man, so I can’t speak to his personality.
I don’t like disparaging someone based on appearance, so I won’t speak to his… countenance…I know that this person is the child of blood money.
I know that he favors an apartheid state.
I know he does not have compassion for his children, let alone his fellow man.
I know that he uses Nazi rhetoric.
I know he uses mysoginistic rhetoric.I know he supports those who frequently showed up in the Epstein lists, which at the very least implies a complicity with children being sexually assaulted and killed.
I know there are a litany of offenses against humanity that this man does on a pretty consistent and frequent basis with no evidence showing any desire to learn or grow or change into something better.
If my neighbor, my friend, my hairdresser, tattoo artist, doctor, teacher, police officer, ANYBODY in my vicinity was exhibiting behavior that Elon Musk does… well honestly idk what I would do. I think I would likely try to get him some help. Maybe an inpatient treatment facility, and maybe they can work on his many many deeply seated personality issues. Narcissist for sure but the choices that he makes… it points to a deeply sad, broken shell of a man, and I can’t begin to fully analyze without likely years of intensive therapy.
But that’s the rub though, because he’s not just some guy who needs help. There are reference images and videos on YouTube that have to explain.. just how much money he has because it’s so much that humans literally struggle to comprehend it.
If Elon musk was a saint and a holy man. If he was pious and caring and philanthropic all of a sudden but retained his wealth as it stands, that sin alone would condemn him.
Add in everything else, and I think it’s entirely reasonable that Elon Reeves Musk is seen as a dog shit eating, Nazi dick sucking, pedophile protecting, living embodiment of a cancer on the body of human and biological evolution as a whole, and a scumbag who’s vibe matches that of an amoeba being shit out of a maggot’s ass who itself is being shit out of a hyena’s ass.

My son told an AI bot to kill itself which resulted in an immediate ban of his account as well as most of my accounts which were loosely linked to his (it was originally tied to my email address and I gave him the account to use and transferred to his email). 10+ year old accounts with no inappropriate content, permanently banned, and they ignored my appeals.

Reddit uses to be a pretty good aggregator for news and how it was trending and going viral. Then they suddenly removed all and now I almost never see any news in my algorithm and usually the same stuff.

Yeah this is exactly what I'm talking about. I used to be able to scroll Reddit for 10 mins and get a sense of the leading news stories and that's just not entirely true anymore. It feels like the most banal stuff is given equal, if not more importance now.

Then for musk to use autism and AI psychosis as a cop out

If you are still using TikTok you are part of the problem at this point.
It’s partially controlled by the ellisons and is another means to spread bullshit

u/Practicality_Issue 5h ago
Wow. How accurate is this documentary? Musk still hasn’t filed the liable suit he was threatening - because discovery…
It must be more than just damning, it might be very accurate.
•
u/drmojo90210 5h ago
From a PR/reputational perspective, threatening to sue someone for libel is usually far more effective than actually suing them. The threat of a lawsuit becomes part of the news story and adds weight to the person's denials. Then they can just wait for the news cycle to move on and no one notices that they never followed up on the lawsuit threat. Libel suits are extremely difficult to win in court anyway and they just keep the scandal in the news longer than you want it to be. Plus, as you said, a lawsuit requires discovery, which means even more embarassing details about your personal life come out. Look at that shit with Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. Both of them came out of that trial looking a lot worse than they did before.
