QUESTION What do I do when a loop is too long?

Wanna use a portion of a sample but it’s too long for a 4bar loop, but I don’t necessarily change the semi too drastically

Chop the loop and rearrange the parts you want

Change your BPM until you can get it to fit nicely in a 4-bar loop without stretching or compressing the loop?

Man I’m stupid, obviously the song slows down and the 4 bars don’t run out so quickly lol. Thank you!

I put the looped melody on say A01 and play it, does that even affect bpm or do I need to process the snippet in some other way? Cuz when I turn my data wheel on the BPM it doesn’t affect the melody at all it stays at the same speed

The sample staying at the same speed is expected with Warp off. Lowering the sequence BPM makes the four bars last longer, so you can fit the unchanged sample inside them. Use time-stretch instead if the rest of the beat needs to stay at its current tempo.

That unfortunately goes a bit over my head as I’m not a sampling expert, there is the sample’s automatically-estimated BPM in the sample edit and program edit screens, and then there is the sequence/global BPM which changes the length of the sequence without affecting the sample itself. You want to use the sequence/global BPM I believe. Changing the BPM in the sample edit or program edit screens will stretch or compress your sample.

edit the sample to lenght and warp maybe? or chop it and play what you need. same difference really.

In the old days we’d pitch it up. If we didnt like that we’d chop it and re-adjust by ear.

Trim it.

Don't loop it and just retrigger it.

So many options.

Hmm I would time stretch it instead of pitching it. On my Live II I believe you can turn on warp for the pad and set the sample BPM so it locks to your sequence tempo without touching the semi, or do a time stretch in sample edit if you want it printed. If the stretch sounds too crunchy, the other option is to just make the sequence 8 bars and let the loop breathe, or chop out the part you actually want so it lands on 4. Hope that helps!

When a sample exceeds the amount of bars, I usually stretch or pitch to fit in. It will change the whole mood and vibe of the sample. If you want to keep the vibe and pitch of the sample, I suggest to loop the sample at its exact bars whether be 5, 6 or 7 bars and just build the drums around it, who knows, you may invent something new. Or like someone mentioned, don't loop it, trigger it like a One shot over the 4 bars. The tail will be cut but you can let it loose and play whole every 12th bar.
