MPC X / X SE Non Hip-Hop MPC Usage

This is the kind of stuff I make with my MPC. I’ve owned, I think, 5 iterations of the MPC; the workflow has always been very, very intuitive to me.

I’m mainly a jazz musician and I have a MPC Key37 & SP404 mkll and I don’t make hip hop. I make lo-fi, electronic, synthwave and ambient music.

Love it! I’ve been thinking about the Key37, seems like it was a well built piece of gear

Dope. I'm always happy to see more diverse output than boombap or trap.

What’s your guitar chain into the MPC? Lovely tune.

I’ve got a couple pedals (eq, compression, fuzz, reverb, delay), going into a rack mount milkman amp, into a focusrite claret 8 preamp, and then into the MPC. I have a couple pedal chains that I send into one of those Franklin Audio channel switchers and then use those chains to sample straight onto pads on the MPC.

That pedal-chain setup makes me want to put clean and fuzzed versions of the same chord on adjacent pads and alternate them.

They also play nicely with things like fractals, and helixes, and the cheap but increasingly excellent chinese knockoffs too. I've also been keeping an eventide E9 in a loop for inserts cos of the awesome verbs and micropitch stuff.

For what its worth, Roger Linn who invented the damn things was a Jazz guy. While Akai does focus on the hiphop crowd, the MPC is the sacred totem of hiphop production anointed by the patron saint j dilla (rest his soul) himself, after all, theres absolutely nothing stopping you from using it for other genres. I play guitar in a psych-pop/rock band (am even from perth) and use mine extensively for it.
