Super Smash Bros

Such a console defining game.

u/Independent_Fall_608 Jan 03 '26
Yeah, N64 is the GOAT, it has so many games that can be designated ābest ever madeā. I canāt think of another console with such a stacked catalogue of exclusives besides maybe the PS4

u/prodigyfrog Jan 03 '26
Except PS4 exclusives are coming To PC, require a day one multi gig patch, and require me to pay annually/monthly to play with my friends

Canāt believe no one here has said Super Smash Brothers.

It has to be Smash, although I wanna mention a really good hidden gem called Fighter's Destiny, it has interesting mechanics and the soundtrack is bomb, I still listen to it from time to time

Killer Instinct Gold, Mace: The Dark Age, Mortal Kombat 4, and Super Smash Bros. are the only real contenders.
For reference, the other N64 fighting games are:
Bio Freaks
ClayFighter 63 1/3 (and Sculpter's Cut)
Dark Rift
Deadly Arts (a.k.a. Gasp)
Dual Heroes
Fighters Destiny
Fighter Destiny 2
Flying Dragon
Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Powerpuff Girls
Rakuga Kids
Super Robot Spirits
Tom and Jerry: Fists of Fury
Transformers: Beast Wars
War Gods
Xena: Talisman of Fate

Love Mace. Characters were cool and Easter eggs were great. Ned the Janitor and bunny slippers.
2
u/HeSaid_Sarcastically Jan 03 '26
War Gods and MK Trilogy were pretty fun. ClayFighter was the biggest waste of potential / disappointment.
2
u/arlec Jan 03 '26
I remember playing deadly arts at a friend's hoise and it felt revolutionary to me.
But Smash bros was really the one that was up there

u/No-Caterpillar-2174 Jan 04 '26 edited Jan 04 '26
I already voted fir rakuga kids but this is really nice to have a list like this really makes it good for comparison

Don't forget SD Hiryu no Ken Densetsu, vastly improved sequel to Flying Dragon.

Smash likely wins, Nintendo console and it has lineage. But no Marcy is just sick. One of the best games on the system, and such a great fighting game.

Smash Bros and it's not even close. I have a soft spot for KI gold, MK 4 and Fighters Destiny but the only game that can hold a candle to that generations fighting games on other platforms is Smash.

u/Born_Locksmith8346 Jan 03 '26
I'd say KI: Gold but I know Smash will win and I don't mind. Smash N64 is amazing.

Im probably the only person who thinks this, but its Fighters Destiny.
3
u/Open_Leather_9411 Jan 03 '26
Fighter's Destiny is among my favorite games.
Tomahawk was my main.
Some of the jokers were absolutely brutal, though.

u/OptionalPlayer Jan 03 '26
Smash Bros. first but FD is a close second for me. Definitely an underrated gem.

u/philthybiscuits Jan 03 '26
I desperately wanted FD to play like Tekken, I'm not gonna lie. Instead it was a great but, if i recall correctly, reslly hard fighting game that no one but I owned in my friend group...

u/aelfwine_widlast Jan 03 '26
MK Trilogy

u/pr1ntf Jan 03 '26
Smash is going to win this one by a mile, but this is my pick as well. Loved Trilogy on the 64.

It should probably be Smash but also, yay for MP2 getting best party game. Always my favorite of the franchise.

u/rhymeswititch Jan 03 '26
Smash is the correct choice. The second choice isnāt close. That said, letās throw MK4 out there for fun.

Itās Smash but letās not act like WWF No Mercy isnāt an all time great too. So many non wrestling fans I knew growing up loved that game still

u/The_Foolish_Samurai Jan 03 '26
I want to say clay fighter 63 1/3. However, it has to be smash brothers.

I honestly can't say what is the best fighting game om the 64. The following are definitely at the top though:
Super Smash Bros Flying Dragon SD Hiryu no Ken Densetsu (Sequel to the above) Fighter's Destiny/2 Mortal Kombat Trilogy
If Wrestling are considered then: Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 Oudo Keshou WWF No Mercy

Smash. Sorry to all the other good ones, only Smash continues to have public tournaments... and a whole community to expand and Remix the game.

Easy pick of Smash Bros. Would be a harder choice on some of the other systems of this era that aren't Nintendo.
1
u/NateDawg80s Jan 03 '26
I've never been into Smash, so I'll go with Ultimate MK Trilogy, with KI Gold as a competitive second place.

Mace: The Dark Age. I particularly liked the use of weapons and that you could move around in the stages and get burned or fall into water etc.

Super Smash Bros. I must admit I didn't try much else in the genre on N64

Ask the different wrestling games are gonna split the vote which is a shame because WWF No Mercy was excellent. I used to play it for hours and hours with my brother and he was the wrestling fan, not me.

Super Smash Brothers is the clear standard for the N64, hell I don't think any other fighting game came close.
1
u/SCATTERKID Jan 04 '26
Super Smash Bros.
Killer Instinct Gold
Fighters Destiny
Fighter Destiny 2
Mace: The Dark Age

Pretty weak selection of VS games compared to SS and PSX, the only contender is SSB.

Flying Dragon. It isn't the best, but I got lost in it with all the other modes and mechanics. I did appreciate that a fighting game from that time was more than just the fighting itself, but the RPG elements and separated chibi campaign.
