Hey everyone, just need to vent some massive frustration here and see if anyone else feels the same way.
Can we talk about the absolute joke that is the booking system for the National Tennis Centre in Berakas? In this day and age, we are still forced to physically queue up at the JBS counter just to book a slot. Like, hello? It’s 2026. We talk so much about Digital Transformation and "Smart Nation" initiatives but the actual reality on the ground is pure dinosaur-age inefficiency.
The counter opens during standard working hours. For those of us working 8-to-5 jobs, how on earth are we supposed to make a booking? We literally have to sneak out of the office, drive to Berakas, queue up and drive back. We risk getting reprimanded or even kana buang kerja by our bosses just to book a 1-hour tennis slot. How does this encourage workplace productivity?
Let's be real. The National Tennis Centre is practically the only court option that us ordinary, working-class citizens can actually afford. Other private clubs and university hubs charge exorbitant rates—some up to $17 to $22 sejam or demand hefty monthly memberships. Are we, the "measly peasants," not allowed to enjoy a healthy lifestyle without breaking the bank or risking our employment?
The government constantly pushes campaigns for healthy living, fighting obesity and staying active. But when we actually want to play, the bureaucracy makes it as difficult as possible. You want us to maintain a healthy lifestyle but you make the barrier to entry a logistical nightmare.
Honestly, when is the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports actually going to implement a basic online booking portal to streamline this? Or are the higher-ups too comfortable sitting in their air-conditioned offices to notice that Brunei is lagging way too far behind our neighbours?
Are they not embarrassed by this sheer incompetence? Or are they just too engrossed in their big worldly stuff, earning their fat paychecks every month, to be bothered by what they probably look down on as a "measly" issue? It really feels like a total lack of empathy and care for the public's daily realities.
Other players I've talked to at the courts share the exact same sentiment. Some people have given up on the sport entirely because they simply don't have the luxury of time to queue up, only to find out the peak slots are already fully blocked out by god-knows-who.
We don't need a multi-million dollar blockchain solution. We just need a simple web portal where we can view court availability, click a slot, pay online and get a QR code. Masa ani pun payah kah?
Rant over. What do you guys think? Has anyone actually found a workaround for this or do we just collectively accept that public sports facilities here are stuck in the 1990s?
