It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.

1.3k Upvotes

Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.

If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.

It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.

Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY

Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.

Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

Need Advice Aphogee Changed Formula

Post image
10 Upvotes

Used some Aphogee products recently and all of the newly purchased ones I have tried left my hair feeling dry. (Apart from the protein treatment). I emailed the company suspecting they were counterfeit products, as I have seen a few posts on social media saying Pak Cosmetics sells fake products.

The image is Aphogee’s response to my email which I’ve pasted below.

I would like to know:

if anybody else who uses Aphogee products has also experienced the same thing?

Recommendations for other products I should try.

I tried Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Conditioner when I couldn’t get my hands on Aphogee Curlific Texture Treatment and I wasn’t a fan.

I am UK based so any products available in Boots & Superdrug are also an option outside of the obvious ones you can get in hair shops.

EMAIL TO APHOGEE BELOW ⬇️

Hi team,

I’m a UK based customer and I have been using your products consistently for around 11 years. My mum also used your products on my hair as a child so I’m a big fan and very familiar with the company.

I live rurally and don’t have any shops that stock your products locally (or any other afro-friendly products). For this reason, I tend to buy products online in bulk once or twice a year.

In April I purchased a large order of Aphogee products from a vendor called Pak Cosmetics. Back in April I opened the newly purchased bottle of ProVitamin Leave in and it didn’t smell familiar and left my hair incredibly dry - I assumed I got a bad batch. I kept the bottle because it had a little bit left in it and I usually decant it into a spray bottle.

The next month I opened a new tub of the Curlific Texture Treatment, it had a somewhat similar scent but didn’t feel quite right. Again, my hair didn’t feel the same after using it but it wasn’t as bad as the previous leave in. I just assumed you’d changed the formula and carried on using it so as not to waste yet another product.

Tonight I went to wash my hair using the remainder of a bottle of Deep Moisture Shampoo purchased from a different online vendor. This bottle has familiar packaging and the scent, texture, consistency and effect I have come to expect. The bottle ran out midway through so I picked up a new bottle I had purchased from Pak Cosmetics back in April, to continue washing my hair.

This bottle was a lot firmer (when squeezing) in comparison to my previous bottle. The scent was completely different and the actual shampoo was a lot thinner consistency in comparison to the previous bottle. When I inspected the old bottle vs the new bottle I also noticed differences with the print on the packaging.

Additionally, I have just checked the unopened tub of Curlific Texture Treatment and it did not have the protective internal lid that it usually has. The newly opened Deep Moisture & unused Curlific Shampoo smell almost identical.

Below is a list of products I bought from Pak Cosmetics back in April:

- ProVitamin Leave In Conditioner x2
- Deep Moisture Shampoo x1
- Curlific Textured Hair Wash x1
- Curlific Texture Treatment x1
- Two Step Protein Treatment x1

I was wondering if you could please confirm the following about the above products:

- have there been any formula changes to any of the above products, if so when?

- have there been any changes to the manufacturer of the above products, if so when?

- have there been any changes to packaging on the above products, if so when?

- is there anything else I should know about these products that may account for the inconsistencies I experienced?

I suspect these products are counterfeits so I have taken photos, including of barcodes/identification codes etc. I have also taken kept all of the bottles so I am happy to take more photos and videos if you need them.

I was wondering if I sent these photos through to you, is there any way you can check these in your records to see if they register as legitimate?

I know this most likely isn’t your fault (so I apologise for the nauseatingly long email) but I’m quite upset about this as I spent a lot of money on these products. I know if I go to the vendor and accuse them of being counterfeit with no evidence (and ask for a refund) they will deny it and be of no help. I thought it would be best to get in touch with you for assistance first.

Warmest regards,

My name

Hi yall

So I used to have a long term perm think like for over 12 years type of long term. And 2 ish years ago I started transitioning out the perm. Never did big chop I just let it majority grow out then I finally trimmed my hair recently to take away any additionally dead and permed ends.

Problems. I’m having troubles getting my curls to stretch out. When I comb it my hair the comb passes thru but my hair doesn’t extend and stays very much coily. I currently use aunt Jackie supplies and they keep my hair soft and pretty and I do see great improvement.

But If yall got some advice on how I can wear my hair and have it look longer. Or even better how to retain length cause I really want my hair to grow. Feel like it’s been stuck at the same length for many years now. I have the excuse that the perm wasn’t growing my hair much. Then gave the excuse that woth the transition it’s hard to grow my hair. But I think I’m done transitioning now. I finished transitioned fully like 2 months ago ish. And I wanna get a head start on anything my hair might need. I’m near Greensboro NC, The triad if there’s also any salons that specialize in natural hair that yall can refer me to that’d be great as well!

Need Advice Depuffing Hair

So I’m having this issue with both my natural hair and my curly hair wigs 😩. They come out super big and puffy and look overbearing. I’ve tried to braid the hair down, I’ve tried wetting it, using gels and styling foams and nothing seems to work.

Is there a product or method I should try to help take the volume and puffiness out? Specifically in the roots.

Need Advice Is the Revair worth it for thick hair?

I have very thick 3C/4A hair and I’m very close to purchasing the Revair to stretch my hair to complete trims (every 6 months) and Dusting (every 3 months). I don’t plan to use this every week or even every month, I’m okay with the cost buttttt I noticed there’s been a few people to report the Revair has weakened their hair strands overtime and cause split ends. Has anyone who’s used their Revair only a few times a year for stretching purposes and also has pretty thick hair experienced any damage?

Meme Wishing my hair on my head was as coarse as my pubes🫩✌️

My individual hair strands are fine and it’s genuinely, I wouldn’t say struggle but it definitely impacts the integrity of my hair.

Then I look down and I see this beautifully thick strand of hair and like seriously 🫩 are pubes just in general have thicker per strand? Why? Can I transplant the hair on my coochie to my head👀 asking for a friend.

Hi All, I recently started a new loose natural hair journey and this is my first twist out ! I followed this routine:

  1. Pre poo - African pride pre poo

  2. Clarifying shampoo - kinky kurly come clean

  3. Moisturizing shampoo - design essentials honey creme moisture retention shampoo

  4. Deep conditioner - design essentials honey creme moisture retention masque

  5. Leave in conditioner - design essentials almond and avocado

  6. Mousse - the doux mousse def

I wore my twists for about 5 days, took them out with almond oil, separated, fluffed and here is the finished product. Overall, for my first twist out, I am ecstatic BUT I know it can be improved. Any tips would be super helpful! The one thing I plan to do for my next twist out is add a gel with the mousse.

Need Advice How to keep my hair from puffing up?

Hello guys!! So I am 15 and I started getting interested in doing my own hair and wearing it out. I have been trying out new leave ins and I have been wanting to try the camille rose honey hydrate leave in. My problem is that I am aware that it has a lot of humectant. Now I want to become a braid out natural but i live in a humid environment and I am scared my hair is going to absorb the water in the air and cause my hair to lose it's definition. So I went to ask if anybody has a great experience with that lleave in. Thank you!

Need Advice Blow drying straight

Hey. Heatstyled hair here. I usually wash, blowdry, and straighten about once a week for like the last 20 years. Hair growth is okay but definitely impacted by the heat bec during lockdown when I stopped using heat, my hair retension was much better that year!

I dont feel confident enough wearing my curls (ive tried!). I can blowdry it straight but then it poofs up pretty quickly and has less movement than when I straighten as well.

Any tips (video links would be a bonus) on how to blowdry my hair that it doesnt poof?

Thanks friends!

Need Advice How to cut down on washing?

Hey yall!! I’m a dry hair girl with very curly mixed girl curls, (LOIS: O patterns with S mix at the back, Fine hair (I believe) and Spongy) and I just cannot find the time or the energy to wash it every week. I just can’t. I love my hair but my current fears of getting covered in water (drowning experience) have prevented me from gathering the guts or the will to take showers long enough for me to wash my hair as frequently as I used to. Does anyone have any tips or products to make my hair last longer without straightening? I’m in desperate need.

Here are the products I already have for my hair:

Aussie miracle moist conditioner
Aussie miracle moist shampoo
Head and shoulders classic clean shampoo
Spray bottle
Kareco flexible detangling brush
Unbrush detangling brush
Tangle teezer
Kaleidoscope apple cider vingegar rinse
Equate therapeutic dandruff shampoo
Olaplex weightless nourishing mask
Mielle detangling conditioner
Olaplex leave in conditioner

Need Advice Never getting braids again

I need help. I got small knotless braids for back to school in August. I never get small knotless, only medium. i just got them taken out and my hair is visibly thinner and see through at the ends.

My mom did them for me, but i noticed a couple braids not matching the density of my hair, that’s when I started to get worried.

I usually take out my own hair out of braids, but my mom insisted to help me. She didn’t want even want to use conditioner to break up the build up.

I’m so upset and I have to go to school like this. My hair used to be so long to my bra strap and im so lost. Please help. I take give sooo much care to my hair so im just in shock.

Need Advice natural hair

this is one of my first times making a post on reddit so bare with me please. im 16 and i only very recently started to like my natural hair. for years, ive had braids or a slick back style and the one time i did my hair, i didnt get a good reponse from my grandmother (i live with her). recently ive watched a lot of black media and my foryou page on tiktok is predominantly black with women that have hair like mine. it slowly made me love 4c/4type hair. tomorrow i am wearing my natural afro out to school and i am quite nervous.. i have some friends that also wear their afro out which comforts me but i still feel so insecure sometimes.

this morning, i took my hair out to refresh it kind of and i almost cried. it feels childish and such a little problem because its just hair but i guess past insecurity just came rushing at me. i read some of your posts on here and it really helped me. i loved to see all the different styles in which 4 type hair can be done and how proud you guys are of your hair. it really makes me feel proud of mine too. im not sure if i used to right tag for this post but i just wanted to express gratitude for this subreddit.

Need Advice Need advice on detangling.

Hello, so i’ve noticed my hair hasn’t grown really in about a year and I just thought my hair was slow growing. But I think it’s my wash days. I deadass have so much hair I lose after washing and detangling it’s crazy. My hair has been stopped at shoulder length for over a year and it has to be the reason. Question I really only wear 2 strand twist and never detangle after taking the out just straight to shower and detangle after shower is that the correct way? I also notice after my wash my hair will still be like “twisted” and it takes forever to get them out and I end up ripping hair out in the process. Any tips?
