Stats & Analytics Harper preseason 3P

Last yr, Harper had a .27 3Pr (% of FGA that are 3s); this preseason, it was .36. This seems to be the work of Billy Donovan, as Josh Giddey went from .26 3Pr in OKC to .37 3Pr in CHI.

A 4 game preseason sample ain’t shit but I’d be remiss not to point out that Giddey’s preseason 3Pr in CHI matched his RS output too. So could Harper’s preseason shot diet be indicative of something coming? Maybe.

Fwiw, Harper had a .375 3Pr at Rutgers and shot 33%+ with most of his 3PA being unassisted. Thru his organized basketball career (AAU, HS, college, NBA) his 3P% is always in that range.

Whether at the chessboard or on the rugby pitch, Wemby spent the offseason with a number in the back of his mind: 100. That’s how many games, give or take, the Spurs will have to play before they can make another run at the NBA Finals.

Draft Ja'kobi Gillespie vs Jalen Brunson start [Summer league and Preaseason]

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hey, I made a shitpost yesterday comparing these two as a joke but I actually wanted to see what their debut (they had the same age) compared and I found it interesting so I wanted to share it. They started the same age, same height, wingspan Ja'kobi 8kg lighter.

So according to this Ja'kobi Gillespie seem to have a better start : shooting and better efficiency (In NCAA however Jalen Brunson was really efficient, same for Ja'kobi Gillespie outside of his last year where he had ro support the whole offense alone), they both are great passers.

The main difference are :

- Ja'kobi defense and rebound is crazy for someone hid size, his not Dennis Rodman but like he is stealing a good amount of balls and getting quite a lot of offensive rebounds

- Jalen Brunson was 8kg heavier, lower center, better at making the oponent foul like his game today

The overall start is clearly at the advantage of Ja'Kobi. Ooooobviously, Jalen Brunson progression is absolutly crazy after this and it's very unlinkely he'll get to his level but I found it interesting to see they share a similar start.

News [Weiss] Spurs 2026-27 season predictions: MVP Wemby? Dylan Harper the starter? NBA champs?

WembVP

Everything is in place for Victor Wembanyama to make the leap to NBA MVP. This award tends to have a three-circle Venn diagram of team performance, statistical output and narrative. The Spurs project to once again compete for the best record in the league, his two-way impact puts him toward the top of impact metrics and voter fatigue with back-to-back winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander should work in his favor.

Looking at this award’s recent history, players often win twice in a row but can’t make it three. That happened to Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry, Steve Nash and Tim Duncan. Sometimes, that’s because they start to prioritize winning in June over all-out effort in October through April. Or their team dynamics shift to where they are no longer making an outsized impact.  But in reality, the big element is voter fatigue. People are entranced by the shiny new thing that makes the game feel different. Somehow, Nikola Jokić’s game has been normalized, even though few players have been as dominant relative to their era as the Denver Nuggets’ three-time MVP.

Wembanyama is approaching that territory. His offensive game is still raw from an execution perspective, and the small snippets he’s shown in the preseason don’t clearly indicate what his next step looks like. He is one of the most versatile offensive weapons in the game, with Jokić being the only other big who can own every single inch of the court.

The question throughout last year was whether Wembanyama’s historic defensive impact could offset the execution advantage of the last two MVP winners. The answer was no, although he would have been right there had his first half of the season been as good as his second half. A consistent season from Wembanyama, with even moderate offensive improvement, could be enough for him to ascend into MVP front-runner by the time he turns 23 in January. That would set him on a path that could open one of the longest MVP windows we’ve seen.

Three-guard lineup will start opening night

There really is no right answer to choose starters on this team. There are several viable combinations. Moving Dylan Harper to the starting lineup is not optimal. It doesn’t fit a system around Wembanyama based on the last decade we’ve watched of post-modern, outside-in basketball. It shrinks the floor for a player who needs spacing to get close enough to the rim to throw the ball through it.

But the Spurs already bucked some conventions in Mitch Johnson’s first full season and built something that worked well. The structure of the system held up in the playoffs, but the execution from the Spurs’ young studs wasn’t good enough in the end. That will improve again this season, just as it did in the last.

Last year proved that having multiple ballhandlers with great floater range can work alongside Wembanyama. The Spurs saw that as long as help defenders were pushed out toward the corners, their guards could get deep enough into the defense to have multiple options. They were middle of the pack in 3-point percentage and frequency, which is good enough with their downhill scoring and defense. If they replace Julian Champagnie with Harper, they will likely see the frequency from that spot in the lineup cut in half. The upside is that it will give the offense more flow and unpredictability, taking some burden off Wembanyama and increasing his stamina late in games.

Article Wemby steals another LeBron James record: With 77% of the vote for MVP in the NBA GM Survey, he sets the highest mark in its 25-year history. The previous record was set by LeBron ahead of the 2009-10 season with 69 percent. LeBron James captured the MVP that season convincingly.

It’s been 23 years since the league MVP plays for the San Antonio Spurs.

All Wemby has to do is stay healthy and play 65 games and that award goes to him.

There’s no OG block last Finals if he is at full strength, he’s slamming that thing down. He didn’t just forget how to play basketball and I’m excited for his redemption year.

Discussion Realistically how do you feel about this season and have we improved enough to win it all?

I love Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, of course Wemby is Wemby. I am less confident on Fox, Vassell I think plays his role well and can hit some good shots when you need him to.

Fluff Starters: first iteration of the guard trio

I'm a believer. Let's make this work and we don't have to see Harper coming off the bench. And wemby + tons of ballhandling and slashing just makes sense to me. You can afford to go a bit smaller with the tall fella and it also leaves you a lot of flexibility for secondary lineups.
