Apartment NFH [Update] This weekend we finally snapped
So earlier this month I posted about how my upstairs neighbors have completely ruined my apartment due to their excessive stomping and banging. Management has basically offered us 2 paths to fix this issue: call the cops every day or move to a different unit in our building on a lower floor and no longer facing the water, while still paying the same rent. I was very close to taking this deal but Reddit made me realize that is totally bullshit, so we are still in the original unit.
Anyways, this weekend my partner and I had our 2 year old at his grandmother's. We finally had some time to spend with just one another, and around 10pm on Friday our upstairs neighbor got home and began stomping extremely loud. This completely deflated our mood. On Saturday morning, we were awoken with the loudest stomping and slamming yet, starting at 8am. This noise literally went on non-stop until 11pm last night. This isn't just someone walking loudly. You have to literally go out of your way to be this loud (and destructive, we can literally hear the ground cracking and our walls shaking). Today, it was the same thing, with the addition of a thunderous sound I can only equate to picking up a fully packed luggage bag and dropping it above your head onto our ceiling. That is exactly what it sounded it, every 20 minutes or so.
Now, my partner did a much better job at handling this mess than I did when it began. But we are stressed, sleep-deprived, and yesterday her friend came over and was exposed to how bad the noises are. When she was awoken early today by the noises, she was not having it. After a few hours, she snapped. She grabbed the broom, smashed our ceiling back, and yelled "SHUT THE FUCK UP WITH THE NOISE". Somehow, this worked. The noise completely stopped and has been quiet for hours now. I am sure it will return, probably even worse, shortly. But good for her. We are done sitting back and letting this person ruin our lives.
Today, she also sent an email to our manager saying we need to be let out of our lease immediately, citing the noise and us having to wear headphones to sleep. She is only 110lbs but this issue has her like a rabid dog, and I love it. I will update when we hear back from management about breaking our lease.

Wear ear protection & buy an air horn. Blast it to the ceiling every single time they stomp around.

Air raid sirens are loud and fun to use as well!

Im suddenly reminded of the guy who attached speakers to his ceiling and blasted baby shark through his neighbors floor….they eventually got the message and chilled.

u/UserNotFound23498 Feb 23 '26
Actually, do it but with the ultra low frequency sound waves. You can’t hear it but you can feel it. And it makes you feel terrible. Set it up, turn it on loud whenever you guys leave. And obviously shut it off when you’re home.
He can’t hear it. He just feels something bad is happening. 2-3 weeks, he will be fleeing.
Best part. No evidence. 😁

u/Aloha-Eh Feb 23 '26
Igorrrr's Savage Sinusoid album on repeat would also be diabolical.
8
u/RazzmatazzNeat9865 Feb 23 '26
The collected recordings of Meredith Monk. They're genius but definitely an acquired taste.

u/Murky_Tale_1603 Feb 23 '26
You sir/madam/whatever are a mad genius!!!
Aaand now my hubby has something obnoxious to add to his eclectic collection of stupid crap to listen to at work. (It keeps the coworkers at bay lol)

u/SneauPhlaiche Feb 23 '26
This is amazing and beautiful. I thank you for enriching my world today.

Blu tooth speakers on top of doors work in a budget-friendly manner. Spotify has a WONDERFUL amount of snoring and other obnoxious noises so they can't complain about radios/music....all biological!
6
u/sugarbean09 Feb 23 '26
make a mix... baby shark, it's a small world and.... the song that never ends.
10
u/rawdatarams Feb 23 '26
I got one for my absolutely batshit next door creatures. I blast it in the middle of the night only, randomly. It's been dead quiet from their end for few weeks now which is concerning.
3
u/Murky_Tale_1603 Feb 23 '26
Sounds like dealing with toddlers…..When it gets too quiet, you know some previously unimaginable form of chaos is occurring. DUN DUN DUHHHH!!!
Hope this isn’t actually the case and you’re simply adjusting to the newfound peace!

I would think me knocking on his door and us reporting it to management 5 times would teach him he is being inconsiderate, but unfortunately it came to this
5
u/Blegh46 Feb 23 '26
Do you think it’s his kid doing it or him? Or both?
18
u/Mother-Associate1654 Feb 23 '26
Its both. Hes divorced and splits custody and even when his kid ks gone tbe stomping continues
9
u/Blegh46 Feb 23 '26
Sorry to hear. I bet he encourages it. I’ve got a trash family of 4 next door, and as the kids have grown they only get louder.
90
u/Sakurafirefox Feb 23 '26
I had neighbors just like this, and im even tinier then your friend. I had enough, I would blast sleep token, pound on the ceiling and I got into a yelling match with them. I cant STAND stupid inconsiderate people. They eventually got kicked out.

A lot of posts that starts with "AITA" are most of the time AI, in any sub.
9
u/HippoAccording8688 Feb 23 '26
I'm sorry I can't figure this out: what is "sleep token pound"?
5
u/Sakurafirefox Feb 23 '26
I would blast sleep token, as in the band sleep token. And I would pound on the ceiling.
9
u/HippoAccording8688 Feb 23 '26
Thanks. Never heard of them, and either I missed the comma (bad eyes), or you edited it in after I read your comment. I'll have to look them up!

u/ithkuil Feb 24 '26
Please consider learning about and using capital letters for proper nouns. It's not as bad as stomping but it's still inconsiderate to skip it. Why would I know that's a fking band? How hard is it to use upper case for a few letters?
3
u/Sakurafirefox Feb 24 '26
Also, keyword "blast". What else do you blast? Usually when people say I blast xx it means a band or a song my dude. Its like the universal sign for keys, holding out your hand. This is just the universal word for what you do to annoy neighbors. Blast.
-1
u/Sakurafirefox Feb 24 '26
Who tf are you? How do you not know about sleep token, live under a rock? Im not even responding to you, I was responding to the other person.
Also you COULD take it upon yourself to type in sleep token on google and find that information out. You could have done that, but you decided to be some reddit grammar forum police.
How hard is it to have done that? hm? Yeah.
1
u/ithkuil Feb 24 '26
It's just common courtesy. By refusing to capitalize you are being rude. Obviously you know how to make capital letters.
0
u/Sakurafirefox Feb 24 '26
By refusing to capitalize...im being rude....hmmmmmmmmmm. No, I dont think so. I dont think rudeness comes from a lack of capitalizing letters on reddit. What a fucking weird thing to say.

u/ShitTheBed_Twice Feb 23 '26
Get a 18" powered subwoofer. Point it at ceiling on kitchen table. Put on dubstep when you both leave.

Bass boosted dubstep. The filthiest dubstep you can find.

12
u/PJpittie Feb 23 '26
I got one of those ceiling stompers for our apartment and it worked wonders. It basically slams and vibrates on tithe ceiling. We’d just pop it on for 20 min and take a walk, dead silent when we’re back. Suddenly the upstairs neighbors actually told their children to stop running from end to end.
2
u/Few_You_5707 Feb 25 '26
I’m debating getting something like this for my downstairs neighbors. 2 small boys, constant running and jumping from end to end despite multiple complaints. They obviously don’t care, and I, 28 F, produce nearly no noise (damn near always laying down or sitting and just not an AH) make barely any noise so I don’t think they realize just how bad it is. My concern is - what if they record that thumping machine? Grounds for eviction?
2
u/PJpittie Feb 25 '26
We spoke with our neighbors multiple times and used it as a last resort. They’ve never said anything, but I would just play dumb if they knocked on your door or complained. If management won’t do anything about them running, then they can’t really punish you either.
11
u/whysperfyre Feb 23 '26
We ran into this problem with a bad neighbor below. It finally escalated one night where my son had grabbed a pop tart from his desk and opened it and she lost her ever loving shit. Over a pop tart wrapper. She had done something to her ceiling where she could hear that in my son’s room below her.
We called the cops when she kept banging for over an hour under neath us. We recorded the banging and sent it to the police officer. The apartment security came by 3 times that night and she refused to answer the door each time.
But I reported and recorded every incident.
The one incident that actually got her kicked out? She followed me and my son out to my car and flipped us off and yelled at us. I recorded it and sent it to the apartment for threatening us and for sexually explicit messages towards my son.
She got evicted~~
3
u/Serious_Engineer_338 Feb 26 '26
Hang on she did something to her ceiling to hear that? Did she have listening devices?
1
u/whysperfyre Feb 26 '26
We don’t know. When she moved out, the apartment complex spent about 3 months repairing the unit before they put a new tenant in there and now there isn’t any complaints. I assume she did something though to be able to hear a poptart wrapper crinkle.
1
u/-K_P- Feb 27 '26
Could have been as simple as her ripping out the insulation in her ceiling for some reason. That absorbs a lot of the noise, and without it there's like a mini-echo chamber between floors to amplify the sound.
28
13
u/RattusRattus Feb 23 '26
Can you put speakers up to the ceiling and play Venetian Snares? It's pretty much unholy noise, unless you like him. Probably get ear plugs for you.
3
u/LurksTongueinAspic Feb 23 '26
That’s a good one. My suggestion is “Mutiny in Heaven” by The Birthday Party on repeat.
5
u/87turbogn Feb 23 '26
Years ago I lived in a second floor apartment that shared stairs with the apartment across from me. I had just moved in. I would hear the neighbors come home sounding like an elephant stomping up and down the stairs like they were doing it on purpose. I could walk up the stairs in work boots at 6 foot and 200lbs and the wife would never hear me. I finally caught a glance at these two "behemoths" shaking the walls. It was a couple women who couldn't have been over 5 foot 5 and 110 pounds making all the racket. Every now and then I'd stomp the crap out of the stairs when I knew they were home.

2

It's not like I'm prying into dudes life. They're literally telling us their business. Being curious is a good thing.
5
u/Delicious_Arm8445 Feb 23 '26
Yeah, not all apartments are made the same. You live in a shoe box for humans. The toddler upstairs runs nonstop all weekend and it drives me crazy. Ok, ok, ok, this sucks and there is nothing to control it. Kids are kids, so I’m the ah for being annoyed. The kid is cute, and the dad is nice and neither can really do anything. But that toddler can make my apartment shake just by jumping off the bed.
Now. Add in the paving and asphalt company I was not made aware of prior to my move. It is maybe 50 yards away obscured by trees. The trees do not help with noise. Three shifts of construction noise and the people that work there are worse than the toddler upstairs. We get no discount compared to other units not near the construction company.
5
u/BlahBlahBlackCheap Feb 23 '26
Hmmm. Bass speaker propped up against the ceiling, with appropriate music, 24/7
5
u/iWishiCouldDoMore Feb 24 '26
Wait, its this big of a problem and you have literally never told them to shut the F up before? I have been in this scenario before and cant imagine just being mad all day and never doing anything about it.
5
u/MDjr1111 Feb 24 '26
What a spineless property manager!!! Why is this upstairs neighbor not been kicked out?!?
5
u/PolkadotUnicornium Feb 24 '26
Bullies don't like being confronted. It confuses them. Your friend showed you how to react. Please continue in that same vein!
3
u/AccomplishedTap5481 Feb 23 '26
Get a good sized subwoofer and find a way to jack it in place to the ceiling. Give them back the same treatment!

Start recording the noise with a good camera that has audio. Send the recordings to your management. In the meantime, call the police every time and get the reports to also send to management. If that doesn’t work within a couple of weeks, go over the property manager’s head to their boss at the corporate level. Cite the quiet hours listed in your lease. Note any damage to the apartment and your property due to the stomping and shaking of the ceiling and walls.
2
u/Witty-Perspective520 Feb 25 '26
Have you called the cops? You need to start documenting so you can get out of this situation without paying for it.
2
u/cheezturdz Feb 25 '26
I would record or ask landlord to come sit in your apartment for half an hour to experience the sound himself. I had upstairs neighbors from hell who purposely made noise and accused us of smoking inside after I reported them bc their baby was screaming bloody murder all the time for hours
1
u/Aggravating_Cut_9981 May 20 '26
While a screaming baby is difficult to listen to, it’s not stomping and banging, which can be controlled. I had a colicky baby. I was glad we weren’t in an apartment. But she was so loud the neighbor (separate house) complained I was disturbing her dogs when I took her outside to try to calm her. I nearly lost my mind during those months, but it didn’t last forever.
1
u/Mother-Associate1654 Feb 25 '26
Did that already. They issued him a violation and he screamed and accosted the manager on the phone, and got an additional violation. Nothing has changed
3
u/Suitable-Tear-6179 Feb 23 '26
Bagpipe music.... on speakers taped to your ceiling. When they bitch, it's just you trying to dround out their noise.
Note, it doesn't need to be at a decibel rating loud enough to trigger noise ordinances bagpipes cut through walls.
I'm afraid since they offered another unit, the management company won't just let you out of the lease. It's got an inferior placement, but if the rental fee is thesame, on paper they're equivalent.
updateme
2
u/GagOnMacaque Feb 23 '26
If I had to guess, you're upstairs neighbor is doing a workout routine.
7
u/Mother-Associate1654 Feb 23 '26
Nope. He has a kid thats like 9 that he allows to sprint, jump and destroy furniture at all times. He also purposely walks on his heels and in shoes to wake us up when he gets up at 6am
4
u/Animalwg82 Feb 23 '26
If the kid just quit when your friend pounded the broom on the ceiling, it sounds like he was home alone. He probably got scared and will start up when the parent gets back. That would have been a great time to call authorities.
3
u/Mother-Associate1654 Feb 23 '26
It was my girlfriend who pounded but yes, we have been suspicious about the kid being home alone at times. Our neighbor got a violation because he didn't have his own kids on the lease which is against the rules
2
u/DuggarDoesDallas Feb 23 '26
A nine year old is doing this on purpose waking you up? Is the kid doing this on their own or are the parents encourage him to be as loud as possible? Has their been any confrontations with these people in the past?
So many of the posts here are people in apartment living having problems with neighbors being loud and antagonizing from the top apartment and also the bottom apartment. Too bad there isn't a way to pair all of the assholes together in the same buildings units and let them out stomp and scream and yell at each other.
1
1
u/classicgirl65 Feb 23 '26
Sounds like it's time to wake up at 4am, put on some heavy bass music with speakers aimed at your ceiling, and simply do everything you can to disrupt his sleep before he has to go to work.
2
u/notyellin Feb 23 '26
The only possible solution is these people move to a bottom floor , they will be a tyrant to whoever is below them.

Omg , i have the exact same issue as you with my upstairs neighbour 😭😭😭please let me know if you came to any solution . I wear headphones 24/7 and I got a rare ear infection bcz of excessive use of headphone. Been three years and I’m so fed up with it. We couldn’t move out either . But mentally I’m so drained and suicidal. Haven’t slept well in three years .

Yeah, right, she doesn’t live there, obviously management could care less you are being disturbed. I had the same problem with my upstairs neighbors, the manager did not care! I finally moved out; problem solved. I never looked back and I have never had to deal with that ever again. Life is what you make it. You are the ones being disturbed. If I were you I would move out of the building. Nomatter where you are, unless you’re on the top floor this may happen due to thin floors and walls, and bad insulation.
1
u/Mother-Associate1654 Feb 27 '26
breaking the lease is nearly $13,000
1
u/Mountain-Math-1190 Mar 01 '26
Not if you have police reports to prove your right to peaceful living which the landlord has an obligation to give you is being disturbed on a daily basis. She is not living up to her landlord responsibilities.

u/Grouchy-Platypus3327 May 08 '26
Im literally going through the same thing except it’s my downstairs neighbor and we own our condo. They are a couple with a young daughter about 8-10 maybe and I swear they are either running or jumping all over their unit, sometimes after 10 pm. I think their daughter does cheerleading? Our floor trembles and we hear constant slamming doors and yelling. It’s really frustrating because I want to live in peace. Idk if to talk to them or tell the HOA. I can’t imagine what the unit below them hears.
So I would also like advice on how to handle it
I was on the verge of calling the cops once because the kid was crying, there was screaming and yelling. I emailed the husband because I had his email and he said his wife had just talked to customer service and was upset but everything was alright. He wasn’t home though so I didn’t buy it. Wife may be bipolar or something. I feel bad for that kid if she’s being verbally abused.
1
u/Mother-Associate1654 May 08 '26
I have no advice. Things haven't gotten any better for us
1
u/Grouchy-Platypus3327 May 08 '26
😭 I’m sorry to hear that. It sucks you may have to move but it’s better than being tied to a mortgage. maybe I’ll leave a nasty gram, I mean note, on their door first. 😂
1
u/strdstwngs May 13 '26
As a mom of 3 kids (6 and twin 3), we try to get them to stop running up and down the hall, and banging on the walls. I’m at my wits end with my own kids. Consideration is a major thing for me. Our downstairs neighbors hate us. I have yelled at the kids, spoken to the kids, and even cried for them to use light feet. It’s really hard, and I hate the broom to ceiling/floor bangs.
But here’s the thing, the kids are asleep during quiet hours. 10pm-7am, they aren’t awake. They usual don’t got feral mode till 10am, and are in bed and asleep by 8-9pm (ish).
We try to get the kids to be considerate. OP neighbors aren’t.

Maybe your fiesty friend could move in for a few days…Have you thought of recording the stomps, etc. They are harassing you with the constant noise and disturbing the peace. Can you call the police and get a “cease and desist” order?

1
u/robinaw Feb 23 '26
My sympathies. I once had an upstairs neighbor who wore wooden shoes indoors. Stuff would fall off the walls.
1
u/Blegh46 Feb 23 '26
Sometimes you just snap. I’ve done it a few times through the wall. I’m not proud and I’m sure my neighbors think I’m psychotic but they are so inconsiderate and rude. Enough is enough sometimes.

Every time you have said something to management, they have called the AHs upstairs to tell them of the complaint. So they figured they would be even bigger AHs every time. Updateme. Hope this gets resolved soon Start recording it. Any cracks in the ceiling take a picture. Take pictures now of any damage they have caused. They them get charged for damage
