Daigo pulls off a perfect parry (15 consecutive blocks) against Chun Li’s Hoyokusen resulting in one of if not the greatest EVO moments in history. Iykyk

The context is important here.

To get you in the mindset: The fighting game genre was entering a dormant phase. Traditional 2D fighters were on the decline and Third Strike was the last quality 1-on-1 fighter from Capcom at the time.

The key to this particular game is the parry mechanic. It nullifies any oncoming attack by properly timing a forward tap at the moment of impact, allowing the player to set up a counterattack without having to deal with the recovery time from block stun.

No one knew how deep the feature was until Evo moment 37.

Justin Wong and Daigo were tied. It all came down to the clip in the video. Justin had Daigo on the ropes, with Daigo's Ken having zero lifebar, meaning he could lose by simply taking block damage from any special move.

Justin threw out a super thinking it was already over because he didn't think Daigo could parry the whole Super Move (referred to as Super Arts in SF3) and the rest is history.

The real kicker here is the combo Daigo throws out after the successful parries. He didn't HAVE to jump and parry on the last hit, but he did to set up a combo that finished with Ken's Super Art. It was the EXACT amount of damage Daigo needed to dish out to finish the match.

literally, one of the most impressive moments in gaming of all time. I am baffled every time I look into more details when this comes across my feed.

98

u/TheKinkyGuy 11h ago

Are there any other moments that even compare to this one ( even from other games)?

Ana from Dota selling 2 items while dying to have enough gold to buy back and defend. If he didnt his team would have lost the game and the finals.

Finals around $11.3m.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ullQaVZqi7I

64

u/Ceryn 11h ago

It’s impressive but it isn’t as mechanically impressive.

For example I’m total rubbish at deadlock but it has dawned on me before that it might be good to sell an item to finish buying cheat death for a base defense because it WILL BE the last fight if we lose.

I think a better example would be that nonsense with fountain teleporting and hook abilities that Na’Vi did in 2013 with Pudge and Chen. I don’t even play Dota but getting many consecutive fountain picks on Hao(gyro) is certainly worthy of recognition.

46

u/Odd_Nefariousness185 10h ago

It's impressive in a way that in all of the chaos happening around Ana that specific moment (being ganked while microing multiple illusions as PL), he still had the presence of mind to sell his items just enough to afford a buy back.

4

u/theNeumannArchitect 3h ago

Meh, there’s way more impressive TI moments than that. He had literally just bought the item. Any player knows in late game when they make a “I’m going to build this at the cost of buyback” decision. He bought it, saw tusk, sold it. It wasn’t chaos. It was an obvious “I just got caught in a gank and am going to die.”

He was also controlling his images and trying to juke whilst having to move to the secret shop to sell the items, you can't just sell them randomly you have to be near the shop which was close but not right next to him. Him moving around his illusions may have gave him the time to finish selling the items whilst moving his main hero to the secret shop to sell.

15

u/Beautiful_Hunt1095 9h ago

Considering the stakes and how chaotic Dota is. It is pretty crazy. There are so many decisions that you could have made there, so to calculate in a split-second that this is what was needed is very impressive.

Maybe it is more mechanically impressive to hit 15 blocks, I dont know street fighter, but I imagine the decision making is more straight forward.

8

u/Million-Suns 10h ago

It's impressive because Ana decision making and execution of that play all happen in fractions of seconds

6

u/jerkmcgee_ 9h ago

Bro I am dogshit at Dota but my buddies and I could do the Pudge hook fountain reliably. Yes it was absolutely hilarious.

0% chance I’m making a play anything close to what Ana did. You are massively underselling how much pressure was involved in that moment, besides millions of dollars on the line.

I'm sure there are some league of legends and Tetris moments which as famous. Probably some Tekkan, Starcraft and Smash as well.

But Daigo's moment was OG as fuck. It went mega viral and I saw it mentioned on my irc feed within an hour of it happening, and this was HPB dialup era.

24

u/aegroti 11h ago

League will probably be Faker's zed vs zed outplay vs Ryu but it's mostly flashy. It's also hilarious that Faker then runs into tower and dies after that moment but the clip cuts it short usually.

Evo moment 38. Justin, the guy getting parried in OP's clip, is one of the commentators.

8

u/_PM_ME_YOUR_FORESKIN 11h ago

I am not sure what I’m watching this time.

12

u/JTNWfan 11h ago

Similar thing except in this case Hugo(big guy) is generally a lower tier character for a variety of reasons and that dropkick move serves almost no purpose and is minus on block. It literally is only correct to do because his opponent woke up with super to chip him out since he had no health. Its an incredibly ballsy read.

2

u/RigobertoFulgencio69 9h ago

Basically guy is using a shit character that's generally considered not good for competitive, and he used one of the character's most useless/bad moves (the dropkick) at the EXACT moment he needed to, in order to dodge a move that would've killed him. He then won the match because of that.

Recently, during the Trackmania World Cup at the Esports World Cup in Paris, the player Neon (a 17 year old pro from Poland) drove five world records on five consecutive maps. It was a pretty unprecedented spectacle. He was also playing against the GOAT of Trackmania, Carl Jr, who is a 7 time World Champion

Not one individual moment, but the Siege of Ragnarok 25 from the old Ark Survival Evolved days. It is the longest continuous battle in video game history. 40 consecutive days of battling between 2 massive guilds, and it all started over 2 stolen bags of fertilizer

3

u/VegetaIsSuperior 5h ago

Interesting. Can you provide any more information? Like if the fertilizer thief got in trouble with their guild or why you think the winning guild won?

2

u/Rgraff58 4h ago

It was like 10 years ago lol. The old legacy pvp servers for Ark developed mega-tribes and they each had their own main bases on different maps and/or servers. As far as I remember one guy just wandered into an opposing tribe's base and stole 2 bags of fertilizer. Fertilizer isn't necessarily valuable as it was easy to make but this triggered a massive war where one coalition pushed the other all the way back to their base across servers. Chaos ensued for 40 straight days. There used to be YouTube videos of it

Evo Moment #38: Same game, years later but just as epic. Hayao vs. FrankieBFG. Hayao is playing what is classified as a low tier character in Hugo and has advanced very far into the tournament. FrankieBFG is on Ken, who is just as high tier if not better than he was all those years ago. Hayao is on the magic pixel where any block kills him. He is in mid air and Frankie unleashes a mid air special. Hayao has to MID AIR parry every one of these hits to survive and does. He follows up with the lariat to punish upon landing which doesn't do enough damage, Ken survives. Frankie initiates the high art super for the kill. Hayao, reading that is what Frankie is going to do, uses what is considered to be the most useless attack in the entire game: The good ol dropkick. It has an entire button dedicated to it, but it is so slow that you would never, ever use it. However Hayao knew that the attack animation would jump over Ken's high art super. He uses this uselese move to dodge the super and then follows us with the punish to win.

SteveH vs Kusoru Final Round XV, Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus

Kusoru plays Sol, but in a troll way (He was nicknamed Troll Badguy). Literally playing like a scrub, but yet so terrifying because he knows what he's doing. SteveH is playing a slow, logical Ky. You have to watch it.

At one point, Kusoru does a 2D (Sweep), Roman Cancel (Spend 50% tension, to reset back to neutral) into 2D and then Roman Cancel again just to Wild Throw (Command Grab; Cannot be blocked, you either have to back dash or jump to avoid it). Its insane. He wants that win by any means necessary.

Puck's S4 coils canceling TPs in TI3.

S4 Puck Million Dollars Dreamcoil - Alliance vs Na'Vi International 3 Final

Showing insane map awareness, keep in mind his hero will die to a gentle sneeze compared to all the other heroes. Yet he kites them expertly and applies his ultimate that does a micro stun and cancels the teleportation channels. Both teams were attacking each other's bases and when Na'vi realized it would not be favorable trade for them they try and retreat and defend but get gummed up by S4 buying back and harassing them.

Later in the same match S4 manages to cancel another TP and secure the win for the game as the Templar that was teleporting was one of their major damage dealers.

* Nairo beats Zero’s 56 tournament win streak

Oh also Pachirisu becoming a Pokemon world Champion

Yeah it happened recently, also in third strike, look up I think it’s Hayao’s Hugo? YouTube Hugo EVO third strike and I’m sure you’ll find it, his moment is equally if not more impressive.

3

u/ArcaniteReaper 9h ago

Actually yes! A few years ago a smilar thing played out on stage at Evo, again with Street Fighter 3. It was arguably EVEN MORE impressive and since has been dubbed Evo Moment 38. Even better that Justin Wong was commentating as it happened.

3

u/koala_encephalopathy 8h ago

I can think of two moments from Rocket League. Squishy's shot and the 0s NRG-Dignatas rlcs championship goal.

Justin Wong vs Yipes in Marvel vs Capcom 2

This is less sensational because it’s less of a defining “holy shit” moment and it requires some understanding of the game to appreciate fully, but is a similarly impressive comeback.

Essentially, Winners Finals, EVO 2007. Justin loses two of his three characters and is down to his last character, Cyclops, who is not considered a good character, against Yipes’ full team. Justin cannot use assists (an extremely important mechanic) because his team is dead.

He makes several extremely clutch reads, and manages to 1v3 Yipes’ team to pull out a win.

Interestingly, Yipes won this EVO, but people only remember it for this amazing comeback.

—

Hayao (Hugo) vs FrankieBFG in Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike

Hugo is objectively a bad character in 3rd Strike. He is slow, and has few offensive options, but can do a lot of damage. Hayao from Japan has been honing Hugo for decades at this point.

EVO 2024, Hayao has made the trip across the Pacific Ocean from Japan to Vegas to attend the most prestigious fighting game tournament of the year. It’s Top 16, losers side of the bracket. Most fighting game tournaments run on a double elimination format, meaning if you lose once you get moved to the losers bracket (to play against other people who have lost once). If you lose again you’re eliminated.

So Hayao and FrankieBFG are fighting for their lives. In almost any case, Ken versus Hugo is a foregone conclusion. Ken is one of the best characters in the game, has high damage potential, and crucially has excellent defensive options to prevent Hugo from approaching into throw range where he’s most dangerous.

But Hayao, as a Hugo player, does not give a fuck about your defensive options. He pulls off a series of extremely difficult parries / punishes, and ends by using a normal drop kick move that everyone discounts as being useless in order to abuse an underlooked feature of the move. In order to perform the drop kick, Hugo briefly hops into the air. Hayao pre-emptively times this hop to predict when FrankieBFG will use Ken’s forward-moving Super, allowing Hugo to hop over Ken to punish.

It’s 2 consecutive blocks of 7 hits, then he jumps and gets the 15th parry for the setup on the counter attack.

And for you to understand how technical it is, you need to input parry in a 1/10 of a second (6 frame), and 15 time in a row, perfectly.

70

u/jwederell 12h ago

If you wanna know how technical it is download the 3rd strike remaster. They have a bunch of challenges including this exact moment.

14

u/USF4Diago 9h ago

I did, and as someone with hundreds of hours in sf4 at the time, constantly landing 2 to 3 frame links, I couldn't even come close to pulling it off once, 6 frames sounds like a lot if you're a fighting game player it is a lot, but not in this context, it's very very hard

7

u/jwederell 9h ago

Ya I never pulled it off lol. I also played a ton of ultra sf4. Even bought a stick for 360. Third strike was on another level.

6

u/USF4Diago 8h ago

With diago thrown in for good measure, loved that game

8

u/Quizzlickington 9h ago

Every Melee Smash player reading this going thats nothing, Fox shine is frame 1 to counter incoming frame 2 jab attacks from mirror matches.

I wrote this as sarcasm and is in no way devaluing the feat this guy performed. I just know that the melee community had this pop through their heads.

3

u/MrKimimaru 1h ago

Honestly though as a Melee player, this clip has always been even more impressive to me than it was before I could fully comprehend frame data. Once you understand how little time that actually is, let alone the stakes of it happening while actively playing in one of the most important sets of your life; the absolute mental fortitude it took for Daigo to not only decide on the spot that he was going to try to perform this but to actually succeed… it’s just ludicrous, not surprising that it is one of the most famous plays in esports history to this day. It’s the definition of clutch.

Thanks for putting up the summary of Justin (Chunli) vs Daigo (Ken)

I was lucky enough to be there as a casual observer, and I can fill in more of the backstory.

That year's (2003? 2004?) evo was hyped because guys were actually flying in from Japan which was a major rarity at the time. All of us US players were super excited to see them in action IRL for the first time. As you might expect, both countries were unofficially fighting for our pride, but in a very good-natured way. Early on in the tourney, it was evident the guys from Japan were much better.

Out of the US competitors, Justin (the one playing chunli) was already known to be one of the best. He mained chunli though, and he stuck with a defensive turtle style which was considered the best strat for her. It was tiresome to watch and considered kinda cheap. The playstyle put him a bit out of favor with a lot of people, even the US crowd.

From the beginning, Daigo established himself as one of the most skilled players, not just from the Japan crew, but in the whole room. Even though we couldn't communicate well across languages, he earned the respect of many of the American players. By the time the semi finals came up, a lot of us were rooting for him.

Anyone in the 3S tournament that year was skilled enough to parry Chunli's full super; the most critical part was to catch the first hit. But even then, the odds to succeed were maybe only 60% for most people.

Justin had the upper hand for most of this final round, but he telegraphed the super with the jab and kick feint. Daigo was skilled enough to see it coming and ballsy enough (also forced) to commit to parrying it. We all went CRAZY seeing it unfold in realtime. Such a cool moment in gaming history.

11

u/z0rb0r 9h ago

Ahh thank you for the greater context. That must have been so exciting when the Japanese players arrived!

8

u/USF4Diago 9h ago

You can actually see diago preparing for it, the spacing, the way he moves back and forth, matching Justin wongs movement, in moments like these a super is very common so he got ready for it

4

u/j3ffUrZ 6h ago

I can't even imagine being in the room. The audience pop was real.

I had to play it a dozen times on ebaumsworld to make sense of it at the time lol

30

u/moeb1us 15h ago

Thanks for giving the context, it's been a while

33

u/Squumpus 15h ago

thats beautiful. as someone who was once competitive in smash, thanks for breaking that down i really appreciate it.

20

u/iflourish 11h ago edited 1h ago

To add on to this explanation.

The first kick of Chun Li's Super Art 2 hits extremely quick. In order to parry the first hit, you have to anticipate it coming and tap forward essentially right before the Super Art freeze (when the camera zooms in on Chun Li briefly).

If you watch Daigo's Ken from the in game timer 31 to 26, he is aware of the fact above and you can see him moving back and tapping forward a few times to anticipate Justin's activating Chun Li's super. Daigo guessed right and Evo Moment 37 was born.

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Genestah 13h ago

And then Daigo lost in the Finals if I remember correctly.

52

u/VEAG0 12h ago

But he became the people’s champion, I don’t know who won the final but we to this day still know of Daigo and this match.

10

u/imJGott 12h ago

That jump made the whole sequence more flashy, glad he did it.

14

u/mittensmoshpit 11h ago

It's wasn't just for style points. If I understood it correctly when it was explained to me, you receive more super meter from a jump parry vs a standing one. He needed the jump parry in order to execute his own super as a punish.

4

u/Skythewood 9h ago

He primarily did it because standing parry would have pushed him back, stopping him from hitting a close range combo. And he can get one more hit from a jump-in attack. These two extra hits was needed to gain enough meter and damage to end the round right there.

5

u/mr638 13h ago

Thank you, I’ve been watching this video eventually for years bc it’s pure cinema but now it is even more amazing thanks to you kind stranger

6

u/Canamaineiac 11h ago

3

u/Daft_Martian 12h ago

I want to see this in the movie

2

u/kingofconnoisseurs 13h ago

read this in my “morgan freeman” voice, damn…

2

u/HyetalNight 12h ago

Did he have to change levels for these parries?

2

u/nokman013 11h ago

So you are basically commiting to parry since you are hitting forward.

Goddamn.

2

u/FatPanda0345 11h ago

I heard that the initial parry input had to be done before the super freeze as well, so it was partially prediction as well as execution

2

u/JooksKIDD 11h ago

thank you for the context. i’ve been watching this vid for years and although i understood the parry system, the context makes it even better

2

u/ianthehuman 11h ago

For someone outside the fighting game sphere, this context just made me respect it all the more. Thats insane

2

u/PixieGoosie 6h ago

To add additional context:

  • the first party would have had to be inputted before the super animation started, meaning this was on prediction not reacting to the super animation starting

  • Justin next to him was mashing on his buttons to try to distract him and throw off his rhythm

  • Justin at that point had the life lead, meaning if he didn't throw out the super and just blocked he would have won by running down the match timer. Justin had to bait out the super.

  • Both players wer conisdered the best of their respective regions, so their match was highly anticipated and had a lot of eyes on it.

  • If Daigo lost that round, he would have been knocked out of the tournament.

2

u/Type-RD 6h ago

The one big detail you left out is how exacting one has to be just to parry. It’s crazy. I can’t remember the exact number, but the timing has to be within something like 0.3 secs (maybe less). So for Daigo to do this consecutively against Chun Li’s Super Move is absolutely mind boggling. Just one slip up and the match is instantly over.

2

u/Vosska 4h ago

.1s, 6 frames.

2

u/LoseAnotherMill 6h ago

One more addition here - because of how Super Arts work, if you wait until after the Super Art is activated to parry, you only have a 1-frame window to get the parry in, which is why you see Ken doing these little nudges forward as he's predicting Chun-Li inputting the combo to buffer the parry before the activation actually happens.

Might be the most impactful moment in competitive gaming ever.

Also, the reactions to do that are insane. To parry one of Chun's kicks is tough enough, you have to time it precisely, almost to a tenth of a second. Now do that for all 15 hits in quick succession, it's unreal how he managed to do that

The Beast for sure

28

u/maxis2bored 15h ago

Can't you just hold down block?

233

u/Resine 15h ago

HIs life is so low that the chip damage from the super would have finished him, so he had to parry or lose.

36

u/maxis2bored 15h ago

oh crap didn't notice. thanks! haha

100

u/GareMetro 15h ago

Parrying in 3rd strike is a specific mechanic where to input forward (so literally the opposite of block, very risky) in iirc 1/10th of a second from the impact. And to chain those you have to reset to nejtral and input forward again, all while considering that a successful parry gives a few freeze frames, throwing off the timing from the non-parried attack. What makes this even more amazing is he parried the last hit in the air, which is a slightly different input but sets him up better for the punish

15

u/sarcyshysa9 15h ago

This precisely

2

u/khizoa 1h ago

all while considering that a successful parry gives a few freeze frames, throwing off the timing from the non-parried attack.

never thought about that before. thats wild

45

u/sarcyshysa9 15h ago

Nope, the chip damage would have killed him

He had to parry the attacks, which are fractions of a second apart

To parry, you had to time your parry (think you had to push two buttons at the same time) to the impact of the hit on your character

It takes unbelievable eye-hand coordination and reflexes/reactions

And that's parrying ONE attack

Daigo got all 15 of them, and finished him off with his own super

It's just a perfect moment

No one's been able to recreate it exactly like that in live competitive play

7

u/tmac4lyfe 14h ago

Dang this is insanely more impressive after your explanation! Insane skill

14

u/BambaTallKing 13h ago

The parry is not pushing two buttons, that is actually the SF6 mechanic. In this one you had to tap forward exactly when you would be hit, which is far more impressive than a two buttons press

4

u/sarcyshysa9 14h ago

Have a look at this 5min clip

Goes into a bit more detail and gets reactions from people that saw it live too!

You say most impactful, but you didn't see my grenade toss in TFC to stop Tj from releasing the gas on The Rock.

Just because no one else saw it, not even the sneaky medic, it impacted me.

3

u/sarcyshysa9 12h ago

If it was in TFC, it automatically becomes the most impactful moment

These kind of clips make me wish I was good at fighting games, I love them but I play them with only basic moves ;-;

96

u/ProbablyCarl 15h ago

At least you use basic moves, I mash the buttons and then blame the character for just jumping and punching the air.

7

u/Mathev 13h ago

Untill you play as Eddy gordo..

That mf could do combos if you were mashing and still win most of the fights...

Hell, he was so strong one guy had a stream where he only used on button or button combination and won quite a lot of online matches lol

2

u/GulfstreamG650 10h ago

SO true. Mash buttons and he starts spinning like a beyblade and destroy my opponent lol

The vast majority of generals went to school and tried really hard to be who they became. Lol. Read a guide, watch a tutorial. Could be fun. Good luck! ;)

2

That's still better than 95% people, who just mush buttons randomly.

The best part is that Justin Wong is also one of the most legendary Street Fighter players of all time, but every time he plays Chun Li online someone tries to pull off the Daigo parry against him, triggering his PTSD.

The newer games even have introduced the third strike challenges, one of which is the Daigo parry.

Capcom litterally made it an official mini-game to kick Justin Wong's ass.

15

u/Suspicious_Mud_3647 11h ago

it cost him everything and he didn't even won lmao

10

u/BigFatStupidMoose 11h ago

And then Arc immortalized Justin getting friendzoned in Tokon with one of Deadpools supers. Justin cant catch a break lmao

"the" fighting game moment

not as popular/culturally impactful but the recent evo moment 38 with hayao is also absolute bonkers

37

u/blazingice3365 15h ago

this one of the thing i hope happens in the movie

8

u/Johnnygunnz 10h ago

They're making a movie? Of what? Justin Wong?

14

u/GoodNormals 10h ago

No but there’s a Street Fighter movie that came out yesterday and Justin makes a cameo actually.

6

u/Johnnygunnz 10h ago

Ohhhhhhh. I thought maybe they were making an FGC documentary or a Justin Wong thing I hadn't heard about.

Thanks for clarifying for me.

3

u/GoodNormals 10h ago

Strangely enough there is a documentary about Justin Wong from a while back called King of Chinatown.

3

u/Johnnygunnz 10h ago

I'm so out of touch since having kids.

u/GoodNormals 10h ago

It’s from 2010.

Justin was being parried .

9

u/kenwongart 15h ago

Yup. You can hear in the clip somebody yell out “Let’s go Justin!“ as he executes the super.

8

u/FigureAcrobatic7194 15h ago

Someone yelled that out right before he used super

2

u/AskRedditor8080 10h ago

And then Daigo became a legend.

16

u/siraolo 15h ago

Justin as well

13

u/HyogaCygnus 15h ago

This is a parry. Not a block. If he had blocked the move then he would’ve lost.

7

u/j3ffUrZ 13h ago

In Japan:

Blocking = Guarding

Parrying = Blocking

u/Uncanny_Doom 13h ago edited 4h ago

For people who don’t understand how impressive this is, at the time it was a myth this was even possible. The parry system in Street Fighter 3 is done by tapping forward (huge risk since you stop blocking) within 0.1 seconds of an attack hitting you. Daigo’s opponent Justin Wong is a legendary player in his own right and is doing a super move that will kill Daigo even if he blocks it. Justin has the option to attempt running out the clock (which he was known for doing then) but makes the aggressive, all but guaranteed play to tie the set 1-1. This is the loser’s final of the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, the winner advance to Grand Finals.

In this moment, myth became reality. There’s only one thing Daigo can do to guarantee himself the win here and he does it in front of hundreds of people who don’t even believe it’s humanly possible. With all the pressure, all the noise, and his opponent to his right banging on the arcade stick hoping to mess him up.

10

u/Slevin424 15h ago

The hardest part of this parry for me is the jump. It took me so long to do evo moment 37. But this made me a god at parrying. 3rd strike was the best SF game. Fight me.

5

u/BambaTallKing 13h ago

It and SF2 Turbo are goats

2

u/Catshit-Dogfart 11h ago

Recently uncovered and restored my old SNES, got it working again and came to a revaluation - the Mortal Kombat games kind of sucked compared to SF2 Turbo.

I had them both, particularly Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Street Fighter 2 Turbo to compare. And in hindsight, MK was always about the shock value. Today I find it to be quite average, not the terrible shovelware of the time but not the legend I had in the nostalgia goggles either. There's a reason why SF2 still to this very day has a presence on the competitive fighting scene and the old Mortal Kombat games don't.

Daigo is 45 years old now, has won multiple EVOs, and created other legendary moments later on and he's still our legend and street fighter beast. He's still kicking ass nowadays with SF6 and using Akuma no less.

Justin Wong has won EVOs with Marvel Vs Capcom and is also one of fighting games all time greats. He does commentary for fighting Esports competitions nowadays and is also streaming. Also known as Wazzler and being known as the person who makes other players online refund their games. Also he has revisited his trauma of EVO 37 over and over again while streaming with random online players trying to pull off Daigo's parry on his Chun Li, some of them successfully.

2

u/idkwhattoput122 11h ago

Fun fact daigo actually wound up losing this tournament

2

u/Skameyka08 11h ago

i love how justin leaves the controller after the move but after realising that daigo is parrying everything he panicks and starts to mash the buttons but its too late

2

u/mittensmoshpit 11h ago

It's this very moment that got me interested in the fighting game community to begin with, hook line and sinker.

Another point people tend to not talk about when this video is brought up is that back when this occurred, the internet wasn't as common place and robust as it is today. If I remember correctly, oadtnkf what made this so amazing is that nobody really knew if Chun's super even could be parryed since it hadn't been done before. And if it had, it was not commonly known that it could be done, at the very least. That was part of why Justin felt so confident throwing out the super despite broadcasting it with the feint before it: even if he blocked, it's not like it could be parryed, y'know?

2

u/camus88 11h ago

Even after 20+ years, this moment keep haunting Justin.

2

u/TheLegendOfDanBe 9h ago

Never skip, always like.

2

u/Welpe 8h ago

Man, Justin can’t even browse Reddit in peace…

2

u/boomersky 8h ago

2

u/wariwaro 8h ago

Rare footage of Daigo actually angry

2

u/FamedNemesis 7h ago

Fun fact: this moment ALMOST didn’t get recorded. The camera operator’s battery died immediately after the end of this clip!

2

u/Lothleen 6h ago

Street fighter 2 turbo is still superior.

2

u/rbcsky5 6h ago

He lost the final but no one remember who won him LMAO.

2

u/rodnono 4h ago

And it still gets referenced in recent games like Punishing Gray Raven.

https://reddit.com/link/phchjxb/video/mu28a6deh2wh1/player

2

u/durfenstein 4h ago

Prefer Hayao or Kuroda moments to this one, but its still a classic. That recent Hayao Ken dropkick is the most amazing thing.

1

u/johntwoods 15h ago

Ya gotta want it.

1

u/akselmonrose 13h ago

This truly was next level. I think it came out as a challenge on one of the street fighter later as a sort practice mode. I saw a pretty decent streamer try for hours until he gave up. The parry timing itself is hard but the combo punish at the end is not that easy to pull off either.

Doing both at once under a competitive pressure with that little health really is insane.

1

u/BK201-MK2 13h ago

Legend says to this day, Justin is still getting parried.

2

u/mittensmoshpit 8h ago

He is too lol. It's a fairly common occurrence when he streams SF as Chun for someone to Diago parry his super.

"Oh, you think you Diago?! YOU THINK YOU DIAGO?!"

"OH SHIT, THEY DIAGO!"

🤣
