Alex Debrincat Signs 7-Year Extension With Red Wings ($13M AAV)

u/-darkest 4d ago
Weird to get cat done before Edvinsson
49
u/TimeNo2738 3d ago
Nah wait too long and you have an Ed situation. Lock your proven players in ASAP. Cat paid his dues with his first deal.
43
u/Spear994 3d ago
My dumb hope is that Chris Illitch is just stuck on "can't make Ed the highest paid player on the team".
So Horcoff is like fine. Here you go Cat. Can we fucking give Ed 7xWhatever now?
29
u/shoot2scre 3d ago edited 3d ago
Can't sign players today based on what you signed your best players for years ago.
The "can't pay you more than Seider" nonsense, never made sense.

I like that for Red Wing fans it’s some good news

We needed anything

The sympathy from fans around the league is nice. I feel like Goku collecting energy for a spirit bomb. In reality it’s just bringing me back from the ledge a few inches
10
u/SpareCardiologist273 3d ago
Fans around the league feeling sorry for us, more so than usual. I guess I'll take it. Why, thank you kind sir!

Hey man, if you ever need someone to talk to, just know that Hawks fans are here.

The Leo Carlsson offer sheet will go down in history.

u/Iginlas_4head_Crease 3d ago
It made everyone go wacky...the cap didnt go up THAT much, percentages are higher than ever now
42
19
u/Foreign_Cobbler_1740 3d ago
Yesterdays 8mil dollar contracts are today's 13mil dollar contracts. Is the cap expected to rise by 50%? I haven't really been tracking the projections.
45
u/KING_SHERBROOKE 4d ago
Lots of snarky comments from Sens fans geez I wonder why lol
-69
u/hotknives 3d ago
He sure showed us by going to a 1 win dumpster fire, boy oh boy!
14
u/travelingisdumb 3d ago
Out of all the teams in the NHL to trash talk, the sens are on of the few where it’s just comically silly. I’m sorry, but you can’t talk shit to the Red Wings when your franchise has never won a cup

23
u/_Kramerica_ 3d ago
Didn’t you get smoked by the Leafs of all teams last year? Don’t you guys have zero cups? I’ll never understand why you Sens fan flap your gums…
-36
u/hotknives 3d ago
Yes, the playoffs we've been in the last 2 years in a row. It's going on 11, let's be honest 12 because this isn't the year, since you've even sniffed at the playoffs.
Your captain wants out, but no one will take him and one of your better D flew across the world to attend camp and promptly left with no contract in hand only to demand a trade.
25
20
u/_Kramerica_ 3d ago
Cat wanted out. Got out. Brady wanted out. Got out. Nobody cares about participation trophy’s bro, either win or pipe down.
-18
u/zech65 3d ago
Larkin wanted out and you guys a
can’t even do that right14
u/shoot2scre 3d ago
Sens fans salty nobody wants to play there and their organization is so shit, they just ship them out for pennies.
"Why come you no give away Larkin?" is definitely a take.
Dumbest Canadian fan base. All salt, no substance.
1
u/King-Leaf-67 3d ago
Their fanbase is made up of broke Leafs and Habs fans.
I'm glad everyone else is seeing what we deal with.
-23
u/hotknives 3d ago
Keep hugging those 25 year old memories.
Soon enough your playoff hopes can make a trip across the border to Windsor and I can buy it a real beer.
20
u/LSO19 3d ago
25 year old memories are better than no memories
Remember when your franchise point leader dumped you to come to us? Good memory👍
-7
u/umbraviscus 3d ago
Its literally impossible to try to banter with Wings fans because of this atomic bomb that you have over us. How am I supposed to figure out a comeback to "the greatest player in your franchise history left your team and retired a red wing because he wanted a real chance at the cup" its fucking devastating
1
u/King-Leaf-67 3d ago
And then he left the Sens coaching staff for the Leafs
Even your franchise icons don't want to associate with the Senators
1
u/Taters23 3d ago
Buddy you are going to die with zero Sens memories at all. Luckily I can't say the same for myself.

Getting this done before Edvinsson’s deal is concerning I think he’s probably not returning to Detroit at this point
9
u/LSO19 3d ago
Also might be a wake up to him and his agent. If Cat is signing for 13 than maybe he reconsiders his demands but who knows
1
u/McJoe77 3d ago
What have been his reported demands? I’ve read 7 years for between 9 and 11. Unfortunately for the Red Wings, I think that Zeev Buium deal is the floor for the Edvinsson one. Edvinsson is really good and getting better and if the cap goes where we think it will, that’s going to be a steal towards the end of it. Even with Debrincat at 13, 11 is still reasonable for Edvinsson.

u/SnooOnions5029 3d ago
I can’t help but feel like this may slightly decrease the odds of the oilers trading for him at the deadline
5
u/Uno_worldchamp2009 3d ago
Thats good news for detroit, I guess you never really know whats going on behind the scenes. He could have easily rode out the seasons, but I guess he really does want to stay in Detroit. Detroit fans will be happy to have a positive news update this week.

u/hotonicee 3d ago
The "highest paid player" arbitrary ceiling is such an antiquated way of thinking. The market changes constantly; Seider's deal was a steal then, not a benchmark for future stars.
4
u/world_citizen7 3d ago
Exactly, like people who argue "Is player X better than MacKinnon o McDavid" - well of course not, it's just that the market is different.

There's your new captain to guide the team through the upcoming rebuild.
10
5
u/PavelDadsyuk13 3d ago
I would agree but I think there's too much sentiment in favor of Seider as captain already. also a very good choice though.

Teams with a lot of room will need to sign their bottom at higher prices too. Unless they can trade for vets and /or their rookies play amazing at entry level prices. A contender like Montreal 's window isnt as big as people make it out to be.
The rookies won't be given the same leash as Suzuki had been given for example. Fans expecting Hage to come in and contribute and be a legit 2C is hilarious.
3
u/umbraviscus 3d ago
Bout the going rate, I think a lot of this contract was paid for by outplaying his previous contract. They owed him for being under 8m before.

u/panompheandan 2d ago
Good for him and he seems like a very good teammate but there's no universe where he's worth 13 million dollars
1
u/Responsible-Smell561 3d ago
I am fine with this. Even signing him for that long, I think Cat can keep the pace for a while. Unfortunately, it looks like Ed is probably gone. I expected him to get a signing before DeBrincat. Once Charmin is gone, I think the team at least gets a morale boost. It has to suck watching your 1C skate like he's on a date at rink. It does as a fan. Also, obligatory SELL THE TEAM CHRIS

u/Ub3ros 4d ago
That might hurt down the line
1
u/MariachiArchery 4d ago
Nah, this contract will age nicely.
-1
u/accountnumber02 3d ago
Well it depends on how you value debrincat I guess. He's good, but in 28/29 he'll be 31 and paid equivalent to 9M pre cap jumps. For reference, konecny signed at 8.75 that year at 27 years old. Debrincat is good but you better hope his play ages well into his 30s for this to be worth it.
Sam Reinhart also signed for 8.6 that year after scoring 57 and 39 in back to back cup winning seasons. But that's kinda unfair since he obviously took a discount to stay there
-23
u/Ub3ros 4d ago
His play might, but that's a lot of money on a dude with trade protection if they change ownership or management sometime soon and do a full teardown. Your 1C wants out. That's a piece that's almost impossible to replace without a high draft pick. This core has had a failure to launch and needs a lot of tinkering if Larkin goes. Locking down Debrincat says they wanna try to push, but it just doesn't seem very realistic. I'd even think higher salary with no trade protection would have made more sense for the wings. Leave options open.
11
u/MariachiArchery 4d ago
13m is a lot less than you think it is for a 40g guy. In two seasons, the cap is going to be like 130m.
11
u/_Kramerica_ 3d ago
Anybody else signs this deal and they’re geniuses. Us, and it’s horrible. Lol, clowns.
4
u/TimeNo2738 3d ago
We can’t do anything right lol. We love the Cat and if you saw how hard he works every game and the positivity he brings then you would understand.
0
u/WanderingDelinquent 4d ago
I think it’s less about his value and more about: should they have signed him for 7 years before figuring out the direction of the team?
Edvinsson and Larkin want out, what does this team look like if they’re both traded?
-8
u/Ub3ros 4d ago
Did you even read my comment? It's the trade protection that is my principal concern. I'd prefer to see more AAV with no protection.
5
u/MariachiArchery 3d ago
that's a lot of money on a dude with trade protection if they change ownership or management sometime soon and do a full teardown.
Dude, he's signing this deal at like the lowest of the lows man. If he wanted out, now was the time. And like, what would a full tear down even look like? Do you expect Raymond and Mo to get shipped? Not happening.
This core has had a failure to launch and needs a lot of tinkering if Larkin goes.
I mean... kind of. Honestly, our biggest problem was probably Larkin. Yzerman could not build a playoff team around Dylan Larkin. Who's fault is that, I guess we'll never know, but people had been calling for Larkin's head for a while now. Regarding the rest of the core, things are actually progressing nicely, and Cat's signing helps that a lot. All that's left to do is sign Ed, and the D core is solid. Goaltending prospect pool is great. Do we have issues up top? Of course we do, but their are some bright spots in the pipeline. There is still time to build around a core of Cat, Ed, Mo, Raymond, and now Finnie and MBN, and hopefully Kasper and our other younger defenseman.
Fully agree this team is two top 6 centers away from actually contending, but that's kind of it at this point. Which, as someone who's been following this, is really frustrating. The team was close man. If you go and look at the lines, just a 2C added to this lineup solves so many offensive issues. It would shove all the problem depth pieces back down the lineup, and all of the sudden the team actually looks great. And at some points, has been great. Remember when we were first in the Atlantic?
Now, regarding the actual NTC/M-NTC: "NTC Yr 1-4, 10 team trade list Yr 5, 18 team M-NTC Yr 6, 13 team M-NTC Yr 7" This is fucking chill dude. Fully expected this, and it's fair. He's giving us 4 years to retool this bullshit, and then he's giving us a pretty reasonable out. And like, dude, 80% of top 6 forward in the NHL have trade protection.
Cat's clauses are team friendly here compared to other top line players, very friendly.
2
u/_Kramerica_ 3d ago
Well it’s not your team so don’t worry about what you’d like to see, nobody cares.

Debrincat’s happy to just collect his points and salary on a subpar team and call it a day once playoffs come around. Good for him
20
u/ExAthlete69 4d ago
I’m sure it has nothing to do with wanting to stay in the area that he is from
8
u/humainbibliovore 4d ago
Oh true he’s from Michigan eh. Okay well can’t blame someone for wanting to work close to home
7
u/AdRepresentative3446 3d ago edited 3d ago
Ah yes, wise words from the playoff giants in Ottawa. A team with so much winning history that Chris Neil barely got his jersey retired. We could all learn more about winning from the Sens.
0
u/humainbibliovore 3d ago
Deforming what I said to make it easier to attack lol.
I never mentioned winning history. I’m talking about current competitiveness. A player who wants to win doesn’t go to Detroit for its multiple cups 10 years ago
-28
u/netflixnailedit 4d ago
Is he worth that?
-24
u/amach9 4d ago
Only in Detroit so he doesn’t leave too
-19
u/netflixnailedit 4d ago
Sets him up to probably be their next captain, even though he has a resting bitch face
12
u/Own_Flower1947 3d ago
Mo is likely to be the next Captain. Cat wants to be near his family and where he grew up. For some guys that's more important.
-4
u/Southbird85 3d ago
ADc said he wanted to go to a "winner" as well, you're kinda glossing over that bit.
5
u/CzechHorns 3d ago
But then he wouldn’t go to Ottawa either, right?
-1
u/Southbird85 3d ago
Works for me. We started doing better once he fucked off to his hometown. Enjoy mediocrity, Alex!
9
u/CzechHorns 3d ago
I’m honestly super confused why are y’all so butthurt about him not coming to Ottawa, he played for y’all one year total.
-1
u/netflixnailedit 3d ago
I’d love that, another German superstar & Stuzles best friend LOL I watch hockey for the friendships
3
u/Own_Flower1947 3d ago
I honestly love their friendship. Can't stand Stutzle on the ice when we play him (cause he's so good 😂) but I love him off ice.

Genuinely I can't believe anyone is signing extensions with the Red Wings with the shape of that organization right now lmao

Wow, if this is actually true Debrincat will probably start regretting this within 2 years......
