I have learned Trent appreciates music of all genres. He’s clearly looking at things most of us are not. His favorite album a few years ago was Rosalia, he likes a song by Dua Lipa, and I’m sure his kids like it as well 🤷🏻‍♂️

u/No_Host_8024 Jan 13 '26

Dude plays the tenor saxophone. He’s into a lot of stuff.

1

u/One_eyed_warrior Jan 20 '26

You don't get as good as Trent at music production and creative vision without experiencing a plethora of new stuff from different genres.

u/Feisty-Result5771 Jan 13 '26

I gave Dua a shot after he brought her up in Rubin interview and I get it, she's a blast

56

u/PrettyHopsMachine Jan 13 '26

Agreed. She's got great stuff.

1

u/No_Good_8561 Jan 14 '26

Real pop star

29

u/mkinstl1 Jan 13 '26

She’s got some funk in her music. I was happily surprised.

22

u/urko37 Art Is Resistance Jan 13 '26

Dua is the real deal. Her music is so much fun. I recently discovered that she has a YouTube channel where she interviews famous authors. It's fascinating because she's well-read and brings thoughtful and interesting conversation to the table. The presentation is also very basic instead of being overly produced. It's fun to watch authors go from "my agent suggested I do this" to genuinely lighting up at her insights and enthusiasm to discuss their work.

6

u/bass_jockey Jan 13 '26

She's really great. From what I understand she produces and mixes a lot of her own shit, that'll garner respect from Trent for sure.

11

u/SleipnirSolid Jan 13 '26

Hell yeah! I got to her cos I wanted to hear some gay-friendly divas and her being British too.

She was in my top 10 most played last year.

Been a NIN fan for years.

1

u/visarhox Jan 13 '26

She's UK based, but originally she's from Kosovo, btw.

2

u/Economy-Cap-4164 Jan 14 '26

No, she was born in England, but her parents are from Kosovo.

-1

u/visarhox Jan 14 '26

Never mentioned where she was born, we all know that. Having both parents with the same nationality literally reflects where a person's origin's from.

3

u/Economy-Cap-4164 Jan 15 '26

You said 'she's originally from Kosovo', refuting someone saying she was British.

Where a person is born is where they are from, she is not 'from Kosovo', her parents are.

-1

u/visarhox Jan 16 '26

She herself has mentioned this on many interviews that she is “Kosovar Albanian by blood, British by birth" - so just stating the obvious here :)

2

u/SleipnirSolid Jan 15 '26

She was born here. That makes her British. The end.

u/visarhox Jan 16 '26 edited Jan 17 '26

Haven't you ever learned anything from your history by always dividing and conquering?

1

u/nhowe006 Jan 14 '26

Dua Lipa is a fantastic talent.

24

u/devilsmusic Jan 13 '26

THIS. My kid loves it & it’s pretty objectively excellent in its own category. The creators did an excellent job on that movie & soundtrack.

7

u/Battle_Sheep Jan 13 '26

It's still wild how many people seem to miss the very obvious pop influences in the music Trent has been making for 35 years.

7

u/Slow-Engine-8092 Jan 13 '26

I haven't heard anything from Dua Lipa that I didn't like.

6

u/uncultured_swine2099 Jan 13 '26

Yeah, and also he probably saw the movie with his kids, and its a genuinely good movie. I could see him digging this.

1

u/slave1974 Jan 13 '26

Dua Lipa is my gym playlist 3. Muddy Waters 2 - Redman, Hesitation Marks - NiN. Dua Lipa - Pandora playlist! She's dope!

1

u/stlkr82 Jan 13 '26

Ok because I posted this some peeps treat like I was close minded music fan which my last.fm completely denies. I just posted it here because it took me by suprise. Also my wife planted image of TR doing Golden dancing routine and I can’t get it out of my head.

1

u/WorldBelongsToUs Jan 13 '26

When I started getting into music production (after getting out of my edgy goth phase) I really started appreciating more genres and picking up on lots of dance pop at the time, because the production quality and arrangement is great and catchy. A lot to learn from it.

u/SpectrumEFP Jan 13 '26

Dude has five kids. He's probably watched it 49,590,854,345 times.

u/GarionOrb Art Is Resistance Jan 13 '26

Mariqueen's Instagram says six!

50

u/PeterPunksNip Jan 13 '26

I heard he has a sixth now

24

u/Sklibba Jan 13 '26

I’m a parent and unironically love that movie and its soundtrack.

4

u/Evil_Unicorn728 Jan 13 '26

Same!

2

u/Sklibba Jan 13 '26

Pretty rare to find a kid’s movie/soundtrack that isn’t grating after the 10th time seeing/hearing it!

2

u/Evil_Unicorn728 Jan 13 '26

Yeah even the good ones start to get old through repetition.

2

u/JBL_17 Jan 13 '26

I'm not a parent but I heard a song on the radio one day and it was so good (Golden I think) my wife and I finally checked out the movie. I see the hype and appeal!

2

u/nhowe006 Jan 14 '26

Both the movie and its soundtrack are a lot of fun

11

u/TheSpiritOfFunk Jan 13 '26

We don't have children, but we watched it 5 times last year. It's a fantastic movie with really great songs.

7

u/Trick-Station8742 Jan 13 '26

He's only watched it that many times? Amateur

5

u/celestialmechanic Jan 13 '26

That was last week. Their views of KPDH have doubled by now.

rock and metal fans can’t comprehend the idea of someone listening to multiple genres

64

u/GarionOrb Art Is Resistance Jan 13 '26

This really is the case a lot of the time. At least the vocal ones on social media tend to stick to pretty much one genre only.

20

u/RoseColoredRiot Art Is Resistance Jan 13 '26

I feel like people forget or just don’t know Trent was trained to play piano, saxophone, and tuba as a kid in his school bands. You gotta know the rules before you can break them!

My friend who is a big NIN fan introduced me to Rezz, which opened up a whole new world of face melting awesomeness for me.

6

u/Sklibba Jan 13 '26

I’m a long time NIN fan and enjoy quite a bit of EDM but only recently discovered Rezz- shit is so good!

1

u/Blazik3n99 Jan 13 '26

Any album in particular you'd recommend to start with?

3

u/DPLaVay Jan 13 '26

Check out her 2018 EDC Las Vegas set

2

u/Sklibba Jan 13 '26

Not really, since I’ve only recently learned about her. I started with the most recent one, as the pendulum swings.

2

u/goofi-lil-guy Jan 13 '26

I love that there seems to be a NIN to Rezz pipeline, going by these comments LOL

I’ve been a huge fan of both for years

10

u/JHerbY2K Jan 13 '26

Back in the early 2000 when Trent was very online, he recommended Polyphonic Spree to me. Which were really great, but weirdly upbeat and positive. Also he poo-pood my favorite Wilco album.

Musicians gonna music

-2

u/HokuVamp Jan 13 '26

You guys vibed? I know that was cringe but I’m coding lmao.

11

u/uncultured_swine2099 Jan 13 '26

Also Trent is influenced by Prince and Queen almost as much as hes influenced by the heavier stuff like metal. He appreciates a good pop song.

12

u/SamTheDystopianRat Jan 13 '26

Moreso than he is by metal, easily. His main source of inspiration in the early days was synth pop, with artists like Gary Numan, Adam Ant and Soft Cell. I've rarely seen him shout out too many metal bands and tbh his output as NIN could only really be classified as metal with Lost and some tracks on TDS and The Fragile

2

u/uncultured_swine2099 Jan 13 '26

Perhaps heavier stuff wasnt the right word by me. Id say more alternative stuff and heavier stuff, which includes new wave and punk and experimental.

But yeah, people forget that he is highly influenced by pop. He talked about how growing up he only had the radio and whatever records were sold in big chain stores.

2

u/Dense-Hat1978 Jan 13 '26

Yeah he had that interview with Rubin where he said most of his music selection early on came from those magazine cutout album selection subscriptions back in the 70s. Dude was definitely on pop rock wayyy before even having access to anything heavier.

4

u/pr1ntf Jan 13 '26

I went to a Stray Kids show last year with my wife and holy shit it was a good show. Music is music. (Mostly)

Had a couple of other boyfriends/husbands tell me my Lamb of God shirt was sick.

6

u/vajohnadiseasesdado Jan 13 '26

My favorite thing is when highly respected artists talk about their likes and general taste and it includes something that their audience views as basic or beneath them. Like when Kojima mentioned how much he saw of Metal Gear Solid 5 in the Minions movie.

3

u/PlanePainting Jan 13 '26

I love NIN, death metal and Opera

4

u/solitarysniper Jan 13 '26

Nah, that title 100% goes to hiphop/rap fans. As someone who’s been pretty involved in the scene for different music genres, people who listen to hiphop are by far the most staunch about just listening to that and nothing else. I spent the bulk of my 20s raving, and bumped into enough metalheads over time that I went from being surprised about seeing them there to then thinking that was a normal crossover.

2

u/nothingistrue13 Jan 13 '26

I see you, Thompson Elk ;)

3

u/HoboCanadian123 Jan 13 '26

it’s actually the cover for Agalloch’s “The Mantle” record!

1

u/nothingistrue13 Jan 13 '26

Oh I’m aware, Agalloch fucking rocks, I think Marrow of the Spirit is like, top ten compositional achievements of human history

2

u/HoboCanadian123 Jan 13 '26

it’s such an amazing record!! Black Lake Niðstang is positively magical

2

u/nytebeast Jan 13 '26

And they clearly don’t actually know what pop music is, since they keep complaining about how the song Everything is “too poppy” 🙄

4

u/BeepBoopEXTERMINATE Jan 13 '26

I think that’s true for some, but most rock and metal fans I know just love music in general and can appreciate good music when they hear it, regardless of genre.

I do feel like we get stereotyped by people who don’t listen to rock and metal though. I’ve had friends and coworkers shocked at how much I rave about Raye’s “Where is my husband” or when I was hype about Doechii, like “Uh, aren’t you a metalhead?” As if preference for one genre excludes me from liking any other genre, ever.

1

u/Spotboslow Jan 13 '26

Their loss. Life is too short to only listen to one type of music.

76

u/Intrepid_Advice4411 Jan 13 '26

The man has SIX CHILDREN.

It's not a stretch to think he's seen and liked Kpop Demon Hunters.

I swear people forget the man is married and a father....

3

u/SignificantNumber542 Jan 13 '26 edited Jan 13 '26

Wait, he had a sixth child?

Edit: I had never seen his wife's Instagram before, he really does have one.

38

u/Appropriate-Ticket23 Jan 13 '26

He worked with Audrey Nuna on Witchgang, so there's that. Also, as everyone has already mentioned, he has fiftyleven kids. Most importantly, the entire OST is a bop.

2

u/Confident-Square-438 Jan 13 '26

This comment should be higher tbh lol

100

u/AdmiralBonesaw Jan 13 '26

Why wouldn’t he, Golden is a certified banger.

7

u/Pocto Jan 13 '26

We're going up, up, up! Ear worm and a half.

4

u/stakey Jan 13 '26

It’s my 5 year olds assembly song in school. To watch her pogo to that chorus is a joy!

4

u/bluecalx2 Jan 13 '26

It's a genuinely great movie too. It sounded kind of dumb, but I've watched it with my kid many times and it's now my favorite thing that we watch together.

-6

u/Brocolli123 Jan 13 '26

Absolutely blandest most generic pop song possible

65

u/Vwgames49 Jan 13 '26 edited Jan 13 '26

His favourite song of 2024 was Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter

This shouldn’t be surprising at all

17

u/likeforreddit Jan 13 '26

I don't have anything to add other than Golden fuckin slaps and is a serious banger

35

u/PrincesStarButterfly Jan 13 '26

He has like three little girls, he has 100% had his kids bopping around the house singing this. It’s sooooo catchy!

It’s a fun time, for any curious. It’s like “What if N*SYNC were demons and Sailor Moon, Mars, and Venus were pop idols who had to beat them.”

14

u/tess_philly Jan 13 '26

I don't know if others haven't heard it or not, but it's a catchy soundtrack. Pop song wise, it hits every angle one should. Plus, it's girl power stuff, and from the Korean culture. He not only has kids who are probably singing this day and night, but he has appreciation for singers such as Dua Lipa. I don't think it's crazy he'd be into this from the musical angle.

8

u/bradtheinvincible Jan 13 '26

Trent understands good songwriting

31

u/parabolicpb Jan 13 '26

He's a pop musician. Why wouldn't he?

7

u/usernametrent Jan 13 '26

He’s a golden globes voter

7

u/BajaScout Jan 13 '26

I have a 6 year old girl so I’ve listened to the Demon Hunters song hundreds of times. As a big NIИ fan and as much as I like AAAYNMTB, I can honestly say that Golden is just on another level, it did deserve the award.

6

u/Mede18 Art Is Resistance Jan 13 '26

Most likely, if for his children

12

u/Pesco- Jan 13 '26

I remember seeing a quote where he said his kids listening to pop music gave him an appreciation for it he never had before.

15

u/DestructorNZ Jan 13 '26

I feel like NIN has always had a teeny bit of pop at the centre.

5

u/InternalHungry8723 Jan 13 '26

He always had appreciation for pop music, as much as for experimental music.

4

u/Mede18 Art Is Resistance Jan 13 '26 edited Jan 13 '26

I read it too, and it mentioned his favorite Sabrina Carpenter song of his.

6

u/Esteban_Rojo Jan 13 '26

Dude loves Steve Harrington. Who doesn’t ?

10

u/Breecanna Jan 13 '26

I have loved NIN for 20+ years. I am a classically trained soprano. 2 things can both be true at the same time. I also love the song Golden. That makes 3. Depth is sexy.

2

u/Breecanna Jan 13 '26

30+ years. Why are the 90’s so far away?!?! 😫

8

u/colliding-with-mars Jan 13 '26

he has like 4000 kids

6

u/roku9413 Jan 13 '26

Takedown is awesome

4

u/the_chalupacabra Jan 13 '26

Why not? The music in that movie is so good. And no, not just because I have three kids and we've watched it approximately 800 times in the last year. I do think "What It Sounds Like" is a legitimately great song, while the rest of the music is really fun.

4

u/its_never_gonna_end Jan 13 '26

I listen to everything from Gaga to Steve Miller to Def Leppard to Rakim and Eric B to Leonard Cohen.

Not everyone has tunnel vision, and my musical line of sight has dramatically widened as I've aged.

3

u/Transposer Jan 13 '26

What little surprise? Link?

3

u/cap10wow Art Is Resistance Jan 13 '26

He’s got kids, this shit is probably popular in their house

10

u/RoundEye007 Jan 13 '26

Nin got snubbed so far this award season. I get it, everyone is singing the Demon Hunter song but that Tron Ares single made it to Billboards top 10 alternative airway list and deserved a nomination over those other shit songs!!

17

u/demiurgegwj Jan 13 '26

TR / AR frankly don’t need an award to get the recognition they deserve. Nice to see attention go to emerging talent, too. I’m sure the boys will be just fine.

-6

u/RoundEye007 Jan 13 '26

Ya agreed, they are fine im not saying they are crying in the shower. Just that the 5 other songs getting nominations completely suck, is all.

4

u/WretchedMonkey Jan 13 '26

Everything after his CMA is just cream now

3

u/Mean_Control9479 Jan 13 '26

Except a Tony. We need TR/AR EGOT status.

1

u/WretchedMonkey Jan 13 '26

Fight Club Musical NOW!!

3

u/GarionOrb Art Is Resistance Jan 13 '26

Even people who haven't seen K-Pop Demon Hunters, or even like the genre of music, know "Golden." I hate to say it, but NIN didn't stand a chance.

2

u/uncultured_swine2099 Jan 13 '26

I agree, but when a movie doesnt hit critically and commercially it often doesnt get any award recognition, even if an aspect of it is excellent, like the soundtrack.

2

u/FaceTimePolice Jan 13 '26

And if he does… so what? 🤷‍♂️

3

u/Either_Sense_4387 Jan 13 '26

Exactly! Is this sub just NIN fans who ONLY accept people who listen to NIN or similar bands?

I love NIN, I love Radiohead, I love Placebo, Portishead, Massive Attack, Prodigy, Deftones, SOAD, etc... all bands that are probably "accepted" by some die hards in this group.

I also love Kylie and Westlife and Jimmy Eat World and Blink 182 and a load of country music (Namci Griffith in particular) and a load of classical music (hit me with a cheeky bit of Handel any day!) Also love a bit of dance and rnb.

Why not? Music is made (however it sounds or however it is produced) for people to listen to and enjoy - let's all just listen to whatever we want, no judgement and all be happy! ❤️

1

u/stlkr82 Jan 13 '26

Nothing. Just took me by surprise.

2

u/SouthAndTheSea Jan 13 '26

he has fifty eleven kids and the girls might be the youngest (?) and is married to a hip Xennial gal. he has certainly seen KPDH. he doesn't live in a vacuum ya'll

2

u/Due-Sun7513 Art Is Resistance Jan 13 '26

I imagine one if not more of his kids has introduced him to the unstoppable might of Kpop Demon Hunters.

2

u/homogenic- Jan 13 '26

He got like 5 kids so that's why he is into the movie and soundtrack lol.

2

u/Link_sega5486 Jan 13 '26

I remember he follows Audrey Nuna. The singing voice of Mira.

2

u/ViceIsVerses Jan 13 '26

I can’t get in the car without my four year old demanding “My Idol”. I have heard these songs hundreds of times by now. I’m sure Trent, like myself, has succumbed to Stockholm Syndrome and has it in his head while he’s walking to record with Atticus.

2

u/Living_Razzmatazz_93 Jan 13 '26

That song is one of the best things to happen to pop music in fucking years upon years.

If you can't at least appreciate it, I don't know how you'd call yourself a music fan...

2

u/Ali_Gunningham Jan 13 '26

He has kids, he's seen it 76 times. They should give us a cover of Your Idol.

2

u/guict302 Jan 13 '26

the movie is fun, maybe it’s because of his kids or maybe not. i remember andy samberg saying he tried to show his kids but he ended up liking it more than them.

2

u/bendistraw Jan 13 '26

Anyone else? Remember the NIN site had a music player and you could pick different channels? Some were his favorite albums in different genres. The hip hop channel was amazing.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '26

He has a bunch of kids in the kpop demon hunters age demographic lol. But also those songs are pretty good. My toddler and I both loved it

2

u/Fun_Assignment2427 Jan 14 '26

Trent hasn't strayed away from doing soundtracks for animated films. He seems open to all genres.

2

u/soyrobo Jan 14 '26

Why wouldn't he? The soundtrack fucking slaps

2

u/Seth_Mithik Jan 13 '26

Someone really thinks he’s selling out? Pffffchheheh ok dude. He’s living probably one of the best lives on earth, and it all about Art in all aspects, and a profound protector and fighter for free speech, free expression and freedom to worship how to see fit, and not be attacked for it.

1

u/ProfessorOk6227 Jan 13 '26

Golden rips. The whole album is good.

1

u/RevelArchitect Jan 13 '26

All of my friends with kids told me I needed to see that movie. I wasn’t planning on it, but eventually I started to get the, “have you seen it yet” follow-ups. I went ahead and watched it.

Maybe a minute in I realized the animation team was also behind the Spider-Verse films and that got me stoked for it.

The music was catchy and fit the film. I haven’t listened to any of it since watching as it’s just not my kind of music, but I certainly didn’t object to it in the film. It was a great film. I recommend it.

1

u/nhowe006 Jan 14 '26

Why wouldn't he? I don't know what the other finalists were, but you can't argue that it's not a catchy tune.

Here's a piece I came across some time ago that I come back to whenever I think of people thinking less of pop music just because it's pop music: https://share.google/oTWWsoQE0ULgyZXwg

1

u/InternetFew7303 Jan 15 '26

I mean it's not my favorite genre but that song is damn catchy....

1

u/No_Confidence5716 Jan 15 '26

Who cares. Quit jocking him.

-5

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '26

Mainstream Pop artists don't really have comprehensive albums of good music tbr. It's more like 2-3 singles that are decent, and the resta the album is filler. It's kinda like I feel about a solid 1/2 of punk and indie. It's not like it's that riveting to listen to in this day and age. I'd rather listen to the Nails or Bowie anyday of my life tbh. I can see Trent liking a pop song here and there, but not really giving af about a whole pop album. Not like it's sumn amazing af and consistently good like big black delta, mstrkrft, or sonoio. But you can certainly be influenced by anyone or anything, and use it to inspire yr own art. You can def. use pop melodies to help write rock melodies. I can def. see how Trent employed those methods within his own music.

6

u/nytebeast Jan 13 '26

He produced an entire Halsey record…

-4

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '26

Which was mid 🤷

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '26

Hard pill to swallow (for some of you in denial): Tront lost the plot

-6

u/One-Display7194 Jan 13 '26

Trent likes whatever’s popular now. Sellout!
