Question NINs heaviest songs?

What are NIN heaviest songs?
I wanted to discuss the heaviest with different meanings. The heaviest emotionally, the heaviest tempo/speed. The heaviest distortion on any given song would love a discussion.

Most of Broken. Personal favorite is Ruiner

37

u/Tmoldovan 2d ago

God I love Ruiner.

34

u/authentic-zertnert 2d ago

Most colossal bass drop of all time.

…Didn’t you? Didn’t you?

THE RUINER’S GOT A LOT TO PROVE

12

u/brenttoastalive 2d ago

Dude, I had just transferred to Germany, first time driving on the autobahn, right when I hit around 100mph that bass drop hit. Beautiful.

7

u/authentic-zertnert 2d ago

I love how visceral it is. Seeing that drop live in the pit would be cathartic in so many ways, and also a little terrifying.

8

u/foursaken 2d ago

And it's companion remix album "Fixed" also slaps but in a very different kind of heavy way.

7

u/bitcheatingtriscuits 2d ago

Yesssss Ruiner is my all time #1

2

u/phxrma 2d ago

Ruiner absolutely blew me away when I first listened. Never heard anything like it. Incredible song.

Somewhat damaged is my rage song.

39

u/I_Make_Art_And_Stuff 2d ago

That song could cause damage to your house at any moment.

6

u/dannyboy731 2d ago

Man speaking of which… I was playing The Fragile the other day, and my subwoofer was hitting so hard on Where Is Everybody I could hear my glasses rattling in the cupboard.

16

u/NullFelson 2d ago

Saw NIN in 2013.. this song with 3 guitars was mind blowing

Reptile live is heeeeavy

58

u/TheStabbyCyclist 2d ago

Such a highlight of the Peel It Back tour. Four shows was so worth it

13

u/Minute_Rent_1983 2d ago

Ya this song is great each time ive seen it 4 times past 20 years but it definitely hit hard on the most recent time ive seen on peel it back tour and im still in awe of the lights always everything put together so well

8

u/wustacheride 2d ago

My husband and I saw them for the first time last September and when Reptile started, im pretty sure my husband ascended: it is his favorite NIN song. I think he was in shock because he didn't expect them to play it lol

5

u/No_Assignment_3277 2d ago

My favorite part for sure, both shows

3

u/Electronic_Emu9339 2d ago

Same!!! I went to 2 shows on Peel It Back and Reptile was so epic both times. I watch my partial video of it often 💚

2

u/TheStabbyCyclist 2d ago

Ha I'm glad I'm not the only one. Take me back...

Devils speak of the way in which she'll manifest. Angels bleed from the tainted touch of my caress. Need to contaminate, to alleviate this loneliness. I now know the depths I reach are limitless

48

u/Scary_Song3328 2d ago

This is the best verse Trent ever wrote. I’m not sure if there’s even competition

u/Ksanagii 2d ago

Somewhat damaged>>>

The last part of Somewhat Damaged has always been my fav lyrics.

u/jbr5016 2d ago

I’ve been to maybe 9 shows. He’s played it at every one. And every time it is excellent. Never gets old.

3

u/explicittv 2d ago

I'm an old man, I've been to 6 shows. He only played it at the last show he went to.

3

u/dannyboy731 2d ago

Same, 6 shows and I was dying to hear it live for soooo long. Literally the only song I wanted.

Went to the Vegas show in 2014 because they skipped my town, only to have them book an extra date here after I got the tickets & hotel.

Guess what they played here, and NOT in Vegas??

I was almost fucking crying when they played it at the Peel it Back show.

2

u/jbr5016 2d ago

Oh man - I guess I’m lucky then.

I can still feel it in my chest from ‘94

8

u/ElizabethMoon1992 there is a place that still remains 2d ago

the woodstock one has the best trent scream

4

u/JX-305 2d ago

It's so heavy, yet it's so slow. Brilliant.

4

u/Express-Welder9003 2d ago

Yes, I remember it on TDS tour and it was so good live. They had these green lasers that would come from the stage. I'm pretty sure it was my first time seeing lasers at a concert. It was a great effect at a great show.

3

u/ronhonda99 2d ago

My favorite song live.

2

u/SpookyKat31 2d ago

I was coming here to recommend Reptile! So heavy and soooo good

2

u/Billkillerz 2d ago

Ahahhaha I remember being completely flooded by the green light during the last tour.... I'll never forget that

2

u/RZAxlash 2d ago

It’s been 9 months and my ears are still getting fist fucked.

Gave Up

5

u/dobyblue 2d ago

That’s the answer for me too, the Broken film kind of thinks so too!

158

u/betheowl 2d ago

Last. Post-chorus guitar riff. ‘Nuff said.

32

u/every_other_monday 2d ago

Broken didn't have any Boyz Noize reworks that I can think of. Would be interesting to hear Last with that take on it.

23

u/browsef 2d ago

Fixed Inch Nails.

2

u/LTS55 2d ago

NIN already made a remix ep called Fixed back in the day actually

9

u/Full-March-4700 2d ago

This is the answer

2

u/jax362 2d ago

This was the song that first popped into my head as well. That guitar riff is heavy AF

2

u/betheowl 2d ago

Agreed! The riff is basically a massive “fuck you” in sonic form!

204

u/memeking_69 2d ago

Burn

20

u/Toothless_counsel365 2d ago

This guy gets the assignment.

I would put burn and memorabilia into a transcending category.

u/gmadexe 2d ago

all of Broken is definitely up at the top, and i specifically think of the performances of Last from the late 2000s when trent's voice was all blown out and a bit deeper like here:

https://youtu.be/bgRUNAvq94k

March of the Pigs is maybe the heaviest sound wise, but the heaviest emotionally are those quiet songs from the Fragile era like And All That Could Have Been, La Mer, or The Great Below. those almost always destroy me.

2

u/missingheiresscat 2d ago

La Mer and the Great Below.

You Know What You Are

46

u/New-Shop-9728 2d ago

No you don't...

7

u/TBdog 2d ago

This is my answer and it was the song back in 2000 when I heard it that made me a fan.

39

u/BoneWhiteHaze 2d ago

I find Happiness In Slavery to be heavy enough to be pointed out on its own when speaking of Broken.

33

u/TheStabbyCyclist 2d ago

Wish

I'm the one without a soul. I'm the one with this big fucking hole. No new tale to tell. Twenty-six years, on my way to hell. Gotta listen to your big-time, hard-line, bad luck, FIST-FUCK!

28

u/StXeon-2001 2d ago

March of the Pigs

23

u/deepfriedabyss Et délivré moi lakay 2d ago

my instant picks: Mr. Self Destruct and Somewhat Damaged
thinking about it: You Know What you Are

5

u/brenttoastalive 2d ago

Mr Self Destruct is such a great intro track to set the tone

22

u/Fear_Her_Kiss 2d ago

Eraser

9

u/aeddanmusic 2d ago

Yesss. I get why Somewhat Damaged is highest voted because it is VERY heavy and a very good song to rage to. But Eraser will always be heaviest to me because of the time signature change, the drums that sound like someone thrashing inside a dumpster, and Trent yelling “kill me” over and over again

3

u/Fear_Her_Kiss 2d ago

The drums fucking POUND! Such an incredible climax.

6

u/TableForGlasses24 2d ago

Man, it's wild I had to scroll this far to see this. One of the most psychologically disturbing songs I've ever heard on first listen. The turning point in The Downward Spiral.

21

u/Juniper_51 2d ago

I can't believe no one's mentioned Wish!?

3

u/machone5103 2d ago

Bad luck

2

u/Captain_brightside 2d ago

Wish, solely because he says “fist fuck”

19

u/TBdog 2d ago

No you Don't for fast heavy. Reptile for slow heavy. Last for both.

17

u/AntysocialButterfly 2d ago

A few off the top of my head...
Somewhat Damaged
The Line Begins to Blur
Reptile
Wish
Mr Self Destruct
You Know What You Are?
Heresy
Last
Ruiner
Happiness in Slavery

5

u/machone5103 2d ago

TLBTB has always, perhaps weirdly, to me, felt like a slower/calmer NIN song. I know he’s literally screaming the verses and the drums and bass are punishing, but idk. Maybe the chorus brings the whole thing down for me. The visuals for this live, back in the WT / LITS era were so cool.

3

u/BadgerBucky1 2d ago

Big man with a big gun

3

u/nine-kb 1d ago

The line begins to blur was the one I was waiting to see here. The whole song is verses that are massive inner struggle combined with choruses of just giving up on trying to fix anything.

"Isn't anyone stopping me," always stood out for me. As in I can't stop myself, why are you all just watching me continue to do this to myself and others?

16

u/salbast 2d ago

The Wretched is pretty heavy. Not the heaviest. Just putting it here as I didn't see it mentioned yet.

3

u/rkmask51 2d ago

Yep this gets my vote

→ More replies (1)

30

u/ronhonda99 2d ago

Controversial but, Big Man With A Gun.

7

u/fucktheworldman 2d ago

Agreed, the drum fills sound like machine guns. The guitar slide before he says “I can reduce you, if I want, I can devour”. Good stuff.

5

u/bitcheatingtriscuits 2d ago

Not at all controversial that it’s heavy IMO. Good pick!

13

u/GentlemanJimmer 2d ago

8

u/ferropop 2d ago

Burn is so underappreciated.

7

u/TehScout 2d ago

burning bright sounds like it was actually forged in a bonfire

7

u/First-Counter246 2d ago

The Line Begins To Blur is super heavy

7

u/Verdreckt 2d ago

Burn for sure

7

u/Downtown_Compote8749 2d ago

5

u/ConsiderablyInjured 2d ago

Eraser, it starts quiet then it ascends to epic levels of rage until the very end

5

u/D-T-M-F 2d ago

Gave Up, Mr Self Destruct, 1000000, Wish, Somewhat Damaged, Happiness in Slavery, March of the Pigs, Starfuckers, and You Know What You Are?

Honorable Mentions: The endings of Burn and Great Destroyer.

7

u/CaptainBungusMcChung 2d ago

And All That Could Have Been, it's impossibly sad but also filled with angst and rage that resonates for a lot of people

7

u/OrbitronFactory 2d ago

I find their slower tempo tracks tend to be heaviest sounding:

Eraser

Reptile

The Great Below

The Mark Has Been Made

10 Miles High

Slipping Away

And All That Could Have Been

The Line Begins to Blur

She’s Gone Away

The Background World

2

u/themamacurd619 2d ago

I never see anyone say anything about The Mark Has Been Made. Have you seen that live off off AATCHB?

u/OrbitronFactory 2d ago

Last

3

u/mrpurple90 2d ago

Imo gave up will be the heaviest one

5

u/Ok_Philosopher_8973 2d ago

Is it the MOST heavy song? Maybe not but I think Only gets overlooked because it’s so upbeat but the lyrics are pretty heavy IMO

3

u/DogfaceZed 2d ago

You Know What You Are?

6

u/scuttlebuggy 2d ago

She’s Gone Away, for me. There are angrier songs, louder and definitely more violent, but She’s Gone Away is like a thousand tons of sludge coming down on you. Heavy heavy heavy

13

u/ActionJacksonATL24 2d ago

There is no wrong answer except Everything.

4

u/authentic-zertnert 2d ago

Everything has a pretty gnarly chorus. The verses are very light and poppy but there’s just something about the way those scratchy detuned noise rock guitars blast against the synth that feels very manic and overwhelming.

3

u/VonBrandtner 2d ago

Underneath it All

3

u/toodarkmark 2d ago

All of Fixed.

3

u/pplovecraft_ 2d ago

“Last”, so heavy, can’t help head banging anytime this number comes on

3

u/Exotic-Bottle-1519 2d ago

The downward spiral

3

u/Deltadromeus57 2d ago

The Big Come Down

3

u/EasyMode556 2d ago

Last immediately jumps to mind, same with March of the Pigs.

Pretty much all of Broken really.

For emotionally heavy: And All That Could Have Been (the song off of Still)

3

u/brainshed 2d ago

The Downward Spiral (the song). It’s a jarring, dark and frankly disgusting song. The filter on the distorted guitar riff, the interpolation of the synths from the end of Closer, the glitching of the vocals. It sounds like someone making a choice they won’t come back from.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/junkfewd Art Is Resistance 2d ago

Ahead of Ourselves doesn't get enough praises sung to it when these types of conversations get brought up. the type of song you have to play at maximum volume (while avoiding hearing damage) wherever you are for maximum effect. Also, similarly, Letting You for the same reasons.

Mr. Self Destruct hands down

3

u/Proof_Appointment497 2d ago

The heaviest emotionally for me is Something I Can Never Have (Still). For speed it's March Of The Pigs and for distortion it's No You Don't or Closer to God.

3

u/crazy-old_maurice 2d ago

Somewhat Damaged for me. It just builds and builds, getting gradually heavier.

What an opening track!

3

u/yosomebodygetdadoor 1d ago

Live version of Reptile from their recent tour made me wish they come out with a live album because holy shit was that amazing.

2

u/Weary_Interaction580 2d ago

Letting You is pretty noisy

2

u/Reesetheperson 2d ago

2

u/authentic-zertnert 2d ago

Heaviest emotionally? La Mer.

Heaviest sonically? Somewhat Damaged.

Heaviest as in most hype inducing? Ruiner.

Wish - always the craziest in the mosh pit.

Something I Can Never Have - emotionally heavy.

Just Like You Imagined fills every single one of those.

It feels like a heated argument and when the heavy bass notes kick in feels like getting shoved. You try to reason with them and talk it out but it keeps coming back on you like waves of pure hatred, anger, betrayal, and sorrow. Each washing over you full force, you can feel yourself starting to tear inside as bitter and painful memories flood your vision.

Then they hit you, hard. you can feel tears welling up and your throat tightens, it hurts. Everything hurts.

And then it happens, you can only watch your body respond and by the time you can stop yourself it's already too late.

It goes quiet in your head as you scream.

You never wanted to hurt anyone but you just wanted the pain to stop.

I had a lot of time to think about that one.

u/ourredsouthernsouls 1d ago

You know what you are

2

u/Roderto 1d ago edited 1d ago

Musically I would say “Wish”. Whenever I’m in a bad mood and I need a quick audio reset, it always does the trick in 3:47 flat. And if you sing along, you get to say “fist fuck” and “I hate everyone”.

But really, almost anything from Broken fits the bill.

Self Destruction, Final

1

u/Complete-Trust-8911 2d ago

personally, i think la mer for meaning; i connect with it a lot and i think everyone should hear a song this sad once in their life

1

u/cbotkins 2d ago

A couple off the walls: All the love in the world, You Know What You Are?

When I’m upset and feeling slightly jealous those songs just hit different.

I really feel if you listen to the lyrics on the fragile they are some of the darkest and hardest in NIN’s catalog. There’s some heavy shit in there.

1

u/aaatings 2d ago

The ruiner

1

u/Regular-Junket-4857 2d ago

Burniny Bright probablemente sea de lo más pesado que hay, no solo del catálogo de NIN.

1

u/EricDHennessy 2d ago

The Fragile is my shit when I am drunk and need a good cry

1

u/No-Pussyfooting 2d ago

Wish, Mr Self Destruct, March of the Pigs, Reptile, The Becoming, Somewhat Damaged, The Big Comedown. (I had to stop myself from naming the entire first 2/3 of Downward Spiral.).
Personally, I find a lot of The Fragile heavy.. just in a different sense.

1

u/No_Explanation5812 2d ago

don’t forget “Closer to God” and “The Art of Self Destruction” parts

1

u/PilotedByGhosts 2d ago

Happiness In Slavery, live in Cornwall 2022. The breakdown was the heaviest thing I have ever heard.

All the YouTube videos of it are from phone cameras, so they couldn't handle it and they're all bouncing off the limiter 😢

1

u/uncultured_swine2099 2d ago

10 Miles High once you get to the loud part.

1

u/Numerous-Macaron4565 2d ago

Honestly, it’s eraser. The buildup and to what is like the craziest wall of noize while he’s shouting kill me. And then that little piano break right before the drop. Makes the drop seem 10x heavier. This song shakes me to my core.

1

u/Onuus 2d ago

I do not want this is pretty goodn

1

u/dieandrot 2d ago

No You Don't has the heaviest distortion by a large margin

1

u/sysaphiswaits 2d ago

The one that hits me hardest is Something I can never have.

1

u/mlc2475 2d ago

For me, the quiet version of “The Day The World Went Away” from the Starfuckers single always makes me cry

1

u/OneTrainOps 2d ago

When I saw them at Panorama 2017, Burning Bright was so loud that it felt like getting punched in the chest repeatedly (it was awesome, completely made me reconsider the song)

1

u/chromereflections 2d ago

Heaviest (emotionally) for me is And All That Could Have Been.

1

u/MissViciousKnits 2d ago

I feel like Burning Bright (Field On Fire) sounds pretty heavy. That’s just me.

1

u/Educational-Earth318 2d ago

I like gave up. Very chaotic

1

u/2245nine 2d ago

I think You Know What You Are is very heavy and fast

1

u/hsisdelicious 2d ago

Physical (You’re so)…has to be turned up all the way.

1

u/_TStop 2d ago

I’ve always been partial to The Great Destroyer and My Violent Heart. Last, however, is elite.

1

u/ButterfliesandSkulls 2d ago

The heaviest emotionally are definitely Leaving hope and And all that could have been. Beautiful songs, but so incredibly sad I rarely listen to them and when I do I cry😭..

1

u/ptindaho 2d ago

Emotionally, I probably go with hurt.

Tempo/musically, of the stuff that got play,.I would put head like a hole up there.

1

u/sm_rollinger 2d ago

Happiness in Slavery, Physical, Big Man With a Gun, Letting You

1

u/Ill_Macaroon 2d ago

Wish was the first. I remember seeing that video on MTV and instantly needed more.

1

u/CastroEulis145 2d ago edited 2d ago

I've never thought about this but there's very few nin tracks that I truly consider to be heavy. Hurt is the only one that immediately comes to mind.

1

u/SagittariusIscariot 2d ago

A warm place is the heaviest for me emotionally. Can’t get through it without tearing up.

1

u/International-Cat316 2d ago

The Great Below for emotionally heaviest.

1

u/Sushi4Zombies Art Is Resistance 2d ago

Deep

1

u/Traum_a_ 2d ago

There are a couple, but "Last" absolutely fckin smashes every single time! It's also very danceable (and very cathartic at that).

1

u/Flimsy-Use-4519 2d ago

Meet Your Master is pretty heavy. Eraser...?

1

u/MooCheeGLaPooCheeIII 2d ago

Physical gets my vote for heaviest * sexually *

Edit: wanted the asterisks and not the italics

1

u/metalupyou-a 1d ago

Gotta be last or they physical cover

1

u/FLRet8 1d ago

Saw them in 1990.....then again in 2025 and 2026. Still have the tshirt from the '90 show.

1

u/HGMiNi 1d ago

The Mark Has Been Made is a top 5 song of mine largely off of how heavy it is
