Avon Avon vs. Salvo
Looking for some more recent insights on this - we usually stay in Salvo. We love how quiet the entire area is and how crowd-free the beach is! However, next summer we’ll have a baby and two dogs with us, and the easier walk to the beach in Avon definitely looks attractive.
I’m wondering how much busier the actual beach gets in Avon. I know there is a lot more going on down there vs. Salvo in terms of restaurants/shops, but I’m just looking for a good spot where we can spread out on the beach and not have big crowds. We’ll be visiting in mid-June, if that makes a difference. TIA!

I’ve stayed all over Avon the past 6 summers. I definitely prefer staying at a beach front house or at a minimum on that side. Staying sound side and having to drive or walk to public beach access sucks. I have never found the beaches busy at all. We usually walk out from the street beach access and set up our stuff to the right or left of where we walk in.

In salvo you are closer to pea island where the beach is a ghost town compared to the ones adjacent to the villages. Also plenty of spots (especially now) there with very little dune to go over.

If you find a house that doesn’t have parking or a public access nearby, it’s not going to be as busy. If you look for houses in Avon south of the pier on Ocean view dr or Greenwood, you should have the lower dunes (north of the pier you’ve got large dunes and sometimes a double dune to cross). South of the pier has smaller dunes and most have wooden walkways over. I’ve stayed in every village - in the fall we normally do Avon because it’s less crowded and has good proximity to everything. Family trips with kids we stay anywhere, but normally soundfront because the kids love to play in the sound since it’s so calm. We do go to the ramps instead of neighborhood beach access and have our favorites that are less crowded.
ORV is the way to go with kids and dogs as well as seniors.

Avon in mid June has been great for us. We don’t do the public beach access tho. But the beach experience has been just as quiet as we had down in Frisco.

We always stayed in the Waves/Salvo/Rodanthe area, I do think it is significantly quieter than Avon, less houses, less stuff, the food lion isn’t there etc. now we stay all the way in Hatteras but I would prefer salvo to Avon
