tecktonik has been showing up a lot all of a sudden. Makes sense I guess, it's 20 years old at this point and ripe for nostalgic resurrection.

Tecktonik is Voguing's straight brother.

I’ve never heard of Tecktonik before but just watching this I was like, this is clearly just straight people vogueing.

When I was in high school in small town Canada, a European hockey team moved to our town to… play hockey?? Ihdk. Anyways they billeted with families, joined our senior year and, apropos of your comment, introduced me to Tecktonic.

I feel like not enough people dance anymore. Everyone is too scared of looking dumb and being recording.
This guy is having fun and that’s something to be proud of. Who cares if you look cool, as long as you’re having fun. Having fun is cool AF

u/rachsteef 4d ago
half of these comments are about how dumb he is, hell, one of the top comments explicitly calls this dumb as shit…
It’s fucking depressing.
38
u/mynaneisjustguy 4d ago
Not it's just human nature; all posts are most likely to first be discovered by no-life teenagers because they are permanently online. They can't do this dance, so they hate on it because inside their psyche they are unhappy but admitting that is to destroy their own ego and being so instead they hate on things.
8
u/hellochoy 3d ago
Could also be bots trying to stir up arguments. I read somewhere recently that at least about 20% of reddit comments are ai. If their profile has only been active for less than a year but they have thousands of karma I assume it's a bot. Tbh between the bots and general negativity of some people, it might be time to just quit the internet.

u/Exciting-You2900 4d ago
People making fun of it are sad pathetic people. Their lives are boring and gross.

u/SenatorMalby 2d ago
One of the few good things about getting old is starting to not give a fuck. I WILL awkwardly dance to electronic while wearing a floral denim pant suit.
31
u/portablebiscuit 4d ago
I think it’s incredible! I’m not sure my body even does most of those angles.

Cool AF, everyone is such haters. Society is so depressing. Let people have fun and celebrate those who do!
26
u/DiptheWizzl 4d ago
That guy is so not putting himself in danger to look dumb. When you reached a high skill level you are above the risk to humiliate yourself. If he couldn’t dance and still be up there he’d have my adoration for being brave.
Anyways looks cool af

I was at a gig last week and allowed myself to be peeved at someone who spilt or threw beer in my hair (I never was sure who did it) and I realised to my horror I had stopped moving enough that if I moved either elbow back they would touch a person.
My inaction had allowed people to claim the space that was rightfully mine. Thankfully an acoustic number came on and that chilled me out a bit, then when a livelier number came on I was able to find space to move again. By the end I was a Plutoid no more. I had cleared my orbit and I could move and dance to my hearts content for at least the last few songs of the night.
Honestly people should never be afraid to dance. In my opinion it doesn’t have to be perfect, if you’re moving and you’re having a fantastic time then I vibe with that. I just love seeing people enjoying themselves.

Everyone would be dancing if it only meant they're having fun. There's always a possibility of some no-life pulling out their phone to record somebody they deem are making a fool of themselves, then upload it to the internet for everyone to point and laugh.

Shoutout to the video of the two brother’s dancing from back in the day…
63
u/Entgenieur 5d ago
I think there were friends not brothers. However one of them is teaching this dance now.
The other one died. Read rumours he died as a Russian soldier in Ukraine but haven’t seen any evidence. The one alive just asks people to not talk about it.

So probably :(

u/Entgenieur 5d ago
Dont know. There are many reasons people don’t want others to discuss about the death of a loved one. Suicide could be also one.

I hope they're all doing well 🫶

Genuine question: Does this style of dancing have an actual name?
55
u/joutfit 4d ago
Tectonik.
This was really popular back in like 2007 in Europe mainly. Lots of people in the clubs doing this back then as it was associated with a certain wave of electro music.
Check out "A Cause Des Garcons" by Yelle! It was like THE tectonik song at some point.
10
u/2eanimation 4d ago
Our class in school was mostly into jumpstyle/hardstyle. Then we got French exchange students bringing tectonic into the mix. Was blown away by the moves. We had lots of fun that week, despite them being French

Weird, we did this at raves in the early 90's. Is there a chance that your view of when it became popular has anything to do with your age? Like I can't image we invented this in the early 90's and it was super popular at the time.
→ More replies (1)7
u/joutfit 4d ago
Yeah there is definitely a chance! I am in my 30s so would have been a kid in the 90s.
Though I'm almost positive I am correct. Tectonik was a very specific movement of like neon colored clothes, these kinds of dance moves and a specific wave of electro music all in the mid 2000s.
You can be thinking of dance styles that led to the tectonik scene but they aren't completely the same thing

We called it flow or liquid back when I was a young raver in the early 90’s.

Is this one real? I saw the same dance with a guy that looked like Sasha Baron Cohen that everyone claimed was AI.

u/sparklinglies 5d ago
This is the original, there's multiple AI copies subbing in different people

u/Enough_Supermarket_7 5d ago
It seems really i loked for obvious stuff, but at one point a phone comes in view and it shows what the viewfinder would see, I doubt AI can do this that good... at least I hope ._.
3
u/tribalien93 5d ago
The other video had that as well but the timing on one of several phone screens was off. Guess this is real and what they based the other on.

2010s trend, tectonic dance
20
u/Kaporalhart 5d ago
I had completely forgotten about that. This was a thing when i was in highschool, around 2006. For some reason, it was the most uncool thing ever in the eyes of the other kids. everybody hated it.
Man, looking at it now, it's so stupid to get angry over the most mundane things. I just "hated" it to blend in.
... maybe everybody did ?
→ More replies (4)12
u/Appropriate_Side_433 5d ago
Ya man. The amount of stuff that I’ve “hated” just to blend in is dizzying. No more though. Now I only like what I like and hate what I hate.

I’d like to be the first to welcome you to earth. One of our cultures as humans on this planet is where we move our bodies rhythmically while listening to a prepared audio that is designed for this rhythmic bodily activity. We like to call it dancing to music
