Outlashed yet again Deadlock main sub when you don't particularly care that the new girl is a little boring
I haven't voted for her once, but the conversation around her addition is so fucking annoying. Let the girl be a college kid that's too in over her head. Not everyone needs to be Seven or Pocket. Oh my god.
43
u/uberpandajesus91 20h ago
Not every new hero has to be an evil mastermind like seven. But I'd like to see more big personalities and rivalries like lash and bebop, or Seven or doorman being crazy as hell individually. Nurse could be one of those but we'll see. We def have plenty of good guys.
In short: Bring out more evil or crazy assholes.
26
u/Quijas00 20h ago
Rat King is still labelled as a new hero so there's at least one crazy asshole for you
3
u/Aquaman33 16h ago
He's crazy but not really evil. If a human character wanted to exterminate the rats to make a home for their people you wouldn't blink, that's just normal. Rats are the target of human genocide, all of them are regular rats besides the king.
Give me actual unredeemable evil

u/A_Private_Cook 15h ago
We have the dude who advertises and sells warcrimes
8
u/breathingweapon 10h ago
cant forget his line vs abrams "Wheres the
GestapoETF when you need them?"1
u/Aquaman33 5h ago
Pretty sure he's cursed by the NDA to be that cheerful about it, he's way too over the top
2
u/subatomiccrepe 8h ago
He wants to genocide all humans in long island?!? Just because he's a giant rat people gloss over the fact he's effectively hitler
1
u/Aquaman33 5h ago
And my point is if you look at it from the rat perspective, humans are all Hitler with pest control and such, it's more complex than just "dude wants to genocide people for lebensraum."
2
2
u/CaptnUchiha 17h ago
Ngl I was hoping for more rivalry between silver and Venator when that batch came out
55
u/Iranoutofname5 18h ago
I got a lotta critique about her and i was voting for nurse harrow too, but she's just super boring, that's really it. Not anything big.
They'll praise valve to high end, talk about their "superior character design", until they make 1 miss then they'll unload their baggage from overwatch and rivals like it's deadlock's problem.
22
u/xFreddyFazbearx 15h ago
Damn if that last bit ain't true as hell, lmao, people are treating her as a hatesink for other games' poor character designs, I can't believe I didn't think of that myself sooner. It makes all of the "omg she's so OW/Rivals/League/Valorant it sucks" posts make way more sense.
I don't like her myself, but like you said, she's just boring. Not offensively bad, just boring. She's really cringy (to me), but I think it works because... that's just how art students talk. I'd rather them lean much more into her being completely up her own ass and pretentious both as humor, and also as a way of showing what she believes in. Basically Billy, but more inward than outward. I'd love if she truly had the best for everyone in mind, she just expresses herself in a way that makes people roll their eyes (again, like Billy). It'd be very true to life, while giving her a more distinct personality.
20
u/betweenboundary 16h ago
I wouldn't call her boring, her kit is awesome, plus she's seen Victor's cock
13
u/TheGirlfailure 15h ago
Do you think it's in one of the pages of her sketchbook. Do you think it could be accessed?
1
u/Iranoutofname5 14h ago
Her kit does seem fun, but i'm entirely talking about her character since it's what people are mostly talking about.
1
-6
u/Xalgar90 12h ago
Let's also talk about how she dresses French but is Korean (I'm pretty sure?), uses therapy speak in the 50's, and overall, just has a very bitter personality/story. I just don't really know where she's going.
Like yeah, Yamato is a bitch, but she's a foreign gangster with a long standing family history of the occult. It makes sense she's not here to make friends since she couldn't care less about New York and the cast generally treats her sour attitude with equal negativity or fear.
5
u/BakerUsed5384 8h ago
I’m pretty sure she’s Chinese. If I recall, the lettering on her poster is just scribbles, but the overall aesthetic of it is traditional chinese art.
0
u/Xalgar90 8h ago
Her poster is in mandarin so she is confirmed chinese. I think there's room for an artist character in the game no doubt, but I think she needs to get revisted for sure.
47
u/Callycore 20h ago
I also thought she seemed like she would have a bit of a boring personality/story and her design wasnt as striking to me as other heroes. But shes easily the most fun hero for me out of heroes in the game so far.
Like A bebop tried chasing me out of his belltower and I filled the hole with paint as I dropped so he couldnt easily chase me.
Peak character, Peak game.
24
u/Xamirite 20h ago
Yeah, exactly. Little boring, but in a game where every other character is a fledgling god, or doing the bidding of a lich hand, or cheating death, or a witch, or seven foot tall talking rat, I don't care if the new girl is just a cringe college kid. I hope everyone realizes she's not that bad and comes to their senses. The switch up will be glorious.
7
u/I_like_fried_noodles 15h ago
YEAH. I LOVE NORMAL CHARACTERS. It's like Tekken, you can choose a god, a fighter who revived or a fucking panda. I WANT THE PANDA
4
u/mr-awesome613 20h ago
Yea, her personality kinda left wanting bit playing her is fun. I wish I voted for Danny he's prob my favorite character for the voting so far hes so much fun
3
u/MoreAd7235 15h ago
Most people in this game have pretty basic lore anyway it’s just explained in a cool way that makes it sound more complex
2
9
u/Okapifarms 16h ago
Yeah the hate for her is genuinely insane. People act like her inclusion means that the game is genuinely fucking over.
8
u/Dakoolestkat123 11h ago
The reactions over a character they don’t like coming out a week before the character they do are insane. People will find one character boring and immediately start speaking like WW2 anti Japanese propaganda posters. Like I get the worry that this is indicative of a future decline in quality but until that happens, the level of vitriol is just not warranted. I’m literally so fucking pretentious and so anti-“let people enjoy things” about bad art but jfc. If I crashed out to this degree when Rat King came out I’d get fucking crucified
6
u/Xamirite 9h ago
I'm also anti-"let people enjoy things." It's important we engage with the games we enjoy critically. Nothing is too good to critique. However, like you said, it's so painfully obvious when someone has some petty grudge against a character, and scraps together an argument to pretend their dislike is more intellectual than it actually is.
I'd rather people be honest and say they don't like her because they wanted Harrow more, or that she's too reminiscent of Kiriko/Luna Snow and it's making them bitter, or even that hate trains are fun and they enjoy dogging on something.
Instead, we've got people trying to argue that her powers "aren't explained," as if this isn't a non-descript magical world where talking rats and chess piece-wielding old men exist "just because."
We've got people saying she's "too generic," as if Billy being one a dimensional anarchist punk isn't played for laughs constantly, or Victor isn't named "Frank" in the files.
We've got people saying she doesn't talk about art enough, when she has ~5 voicelines per hero for her portrait ability where she goes into detail about her technique.
We've got people saying her wish is stupid and selfish, as if Wraith, Silver and Vyper don't just want money. Drifter's there for the lulz. Doorman just wants to say hi to old friends. Lash presumably just wants to show off.
We've got people saying her design is uniquely bland, as if Abrams, Pocket, and Mina aren't just wearing their everyday clothes.
We've got people saying she's too much of a "quirky UwU shy dorky girl," as if that isn't Paige's entire character.
We've got people complaining she's "too millennial" because she goes to protests, "forced relatability" because she mentioned getting high one time, and "someone's gooner self insert" because she thirsts over Shiv, Victor, Haze, Silver, Mina and Paige. Mind you: Vyper is horny for half the men in this game, everyone calls Shiv pretty, Infernus asks Holliday out, Paige tells Victor to never put on a shirt, and so on.
We've got people harping on her for not liking her parents, as if Arin "Angsty Vagueposter" Fairfax isn't always complaining about their dad.
It's dishonest contempt framed as well-meaning analysis. When you press them on why other characters are allowed to get away with the same things they hate Violet for, they start scrambling. I said it before, but the switch up will be glorious when it becomes uncool to dislike her. Everyone's just in collective psychosis right now.
7
u/BakerUsed5384 8h ago
I agree with everything here, the only thing is that I would also throw the “she reminds me too much of Kiriko/Luna Snow” critique into the pile of bad faith criticism.
Because it’s just straight up racist. Her powers, lore, personality etc are all completely different and the only thing you could possibly use to connect her to those two characters is that she’s an East Asian woman, and she’s not even the same ethnicity of East Asian woman as either of them.
Hell i’d even argue there’s a dash of misogyny thrown in there. Two parts of her kit(1 and 2) are very similar mechanically to Wuyang and his kit from OW, yet I haven’t seen that comparison tossed around once. Only comparisons to Kiri. Makes you think.
3
u/Xamirite 7h ago
For sure, yeah. This entire situation reeks of misogyny and racism. Everyone bristles up and plays dumb when you mention it, but from the whole “goonerbait” thing to people being repugnant in-game, there’s just no doubt about it. I’d just rather people be honest they’re hating in bad faith instead of dressing up their Overwatch/Rivals/League shaped baggage as “critique.” I think deep down a lot of these people know their grounds for being this vitriolic are bigoted, but don’t want to admit it and get insanely defensive as such.
1
u/TK_BERZERKER 4h ago
It's more about an them all being young women, conventionally attractive with boring lore and designs in a game with more interesting characters. It just so happens that they're all Asian.
I'm sure some people just hate anything non white. But most people don't care that she's Asian
1
u/GeophysicalYear57 5h ago
I never got the arguments about unexplained powers and bland design. The specific obvious thing IMO is that her motivation is contrived, not stupid or selfish. She’s so worried about failing that she kills for an elder god to get a shot at fame, but she doesn’t come off as someone who’d do that. It doesn’t help that she also comes from a comfortable background of a full-ride scholarship and recognition from the MOMA, either.
My main issue is that she just doesn’t have the sauce, but that’s hard to quantify and pick apart.
0
u/GrindyBoiE 1h ago
Im anti let people enjoy things but if you engage with the games you enjoy critically youre either blindly hating for extrinsic reasons to be cool or one of the strawmen i laid out
1
u/Xamirite 50m ago
You call it strawmen but these are all takes from people who I argued with on the main sub. Enjoying something critically doesn't mean your takes are safe from scrutiny. You're allowed to dislike things, but when you willingly enter a debate about why said thing sucks and your reasoning is "Violet doesn't yap enough about art," just to later admit you didn't bother to find the voicelines where she does exactly that, I'm not going to take you seriously.
0
u/GrindyBoiE 36m ago
And what im saying is when your claim is that people have to either be bigoted or hating for no reason because theyre actually bigoted deep down because they possibly dislike something you just sound like youre ignoring valid criticism (that you do not have to agree with without projecting ridiculous OW/Rivals/whatever baggage onto people for it) while looking just as ridiculous. People can and will be dumb especially when it comes to a game in beta with 250k active players at any time but dragging yourself down to that level and lashing out via generalizations doesnt really help anyone (including yourself this is just gonna spiral into more shit flinging)

u/Dakoolestkat123 8h ago
No I had to leave for several years due to severe depression. I almost all of 2024 in different mental institutions. I finally found meds that work though, I haven’t had a severe depressive episode in maybe a year or more which would’ve been genuinely unthinkable to the me of a few years ago, and I’m filling out the paperwork to go back and finish my art history degree

Design is meh in comparison to other choices but her kit is so fun
New fav character
4
u/GhostOfMuttonPast 17h ago
Her design is really cute and has a lot of cute details, I don't understand why people think she's boring.
3
u/giraffetheloml 17h ago
I've seen a lot of people upset because either A. She just doesn't fit the time of deadlock definitely feels more 2000 than 1949 or B. She doesn't have any design nods to Asian culture, she's Asian for the sake of being Asian there's no love or attention put into that part of her. I think she's fine by most games standards we've just had an extremely high level of characters so she stands out a bit more but not in a good way
3
u/GhostOfMuttonPast 17h ago
A. I sort of understand why people feel shes more modern, but so does Billy. So does Paige. They've referenced Narnia which is '50, Kevlar from '65, and the EPA from '70, so things are clearly a little wobbly in terms of timeline.
B. First off, the justification is that shes an immigrant who came over to go to a prestigious art school, but why does her being Asian have to be justified? No one needed justification for Solomon being Jamacian, or Bebop being British even though he was built by an American. Why does she need to have one?
1
u/giraffetheloml 17h ago
Billy absolutely fits the time, punk was rampant around then and Paige referencing peices of literature that came after dosent mean she doesn't fit either, soloman has chess positions from games from the last decade, it's a nice reference that's all. Her being Asian doesn't have to be justified for me personally but when you've got a community that voted for her because she's Asian and then all it boils down to is the stereotype of overbearing parents it's not hard to see why it leaves a lot to be desired. It's a lot like Baba, people were disappointed she was a new York granny and the only thing tying her to the Baba yaga was the chicken legs and a name. When youve got a character that people resonate with for one reason or another(superstition, race or a hobby) people want to see themselves in that character.
0
u/GhostOfMuttonPast 16h ago
punk was rampant around then
The deadlock community continues to astonish me with their lack of understanding of history. The prototype of punk didn't even start existing until the mid 50s, and the aesthetic he has doesn't start until around 73. The term "punk music" didn't even exist until 1970.
2
u/giraffetheloml 16h ago
Apologies the building blocks for punk like rockabilly was around and very rampant around that time, even with the timeline difference he's a lot closer to the setting than 2000s painter
1
u/RiverLynneUwU 15h ago
does she need a justification for being asian? like oh hey bro you're asian but you act so american do a little asian dance or else I won't believe you're asian or something like wtf who treats people like that
1
u/giraffetheloml 15h ago
Read my other comment for a deeper rundown but when you add representation people want to be able to see themselves in that character, which is something she fails at she doesn't have nods to Asian design in her character like at all and having one of her biggest driving factors be an Asian stereotype of overbearing parents is also a bad look
0
u/RiverLynneUwU 6h ago
asian american people exist
1
u/giraffetheloml 6h ago
Which she isn't, she imagrated when she was 12 which is stated in her lore. Please read it.

u/JonWindtail 11h ago
I’m comparing to baba tbf, baba was just dope
2
u/GhostOfMuttonPast 11h ago
She is a lot less interesting than some of the others, i do have to admit that.
2
u/Jerome_Valeska_Lives 9h ago
Want on know the very simple reasons she's the only character who didn’t get a single vote from me? SHES GOT NO DRIP. Most boringly dressed and looking character of all the new additions
-1
u/dhkdeoen 19h ago
I am seeing more of these 'oh they hate Violet for no reason' than actual Violet hating posts.
14
1
u/Cpad-prism 15h ago
Imo all she would need is some kind of tie to her magic ink and i feel like she'd be on the same level as Paige which is like ordinary and grounded but with a little magic in it.
Which would probably require minimal changes so treating her as ruined or something is wild (also not having her poster be like that would've probably helped temper expectations)
1
u/candexreginpokemon 12h ago
I don't care, tbh. Its nice that Billy has a friend who isn't a serial killer.
1
u/LightKnight07 10h ago
I don’t really see much issue with a less sensational character. The whole setting of deadlock is an urban fantasy, that includes the supernatural, but that also includes the everyday men and women that are affected by the supernatural things around them. Kinda weird that Solomon didn’t get this level of hate, when both he and Violet represent an art form made supernatural. And one can’t even point to their personalities as a reason for this because Violet hate started coming before she was ever in the game and had a personality people could hate on. Weird what people spend their stress and energy on.
1
u/Havok-Trance 9h ago
Idgaf that shes boring. I care that shes another fucking movement character @_@

I would at least understand if she was picked first or second, but she was second-to-last, she's just a bit bland but the discourse is approaching prime "The Last Jedi" levels of tribalism and shit-flinging
1
u/Jaded-Expression-413 4h ago
Sounds like you care a lot.
I just want the cool monster transformation from the poster, I was scammed by Yoshi.
Another victim of the big Y, I now go to rest with my poor Sinclair main brothers
-1
u/Xamirite 4h ago
I don’t care about the fact she’s boring, I care that the community hasn’t gone one day without bitching about her since the CNS update dropped. Everyone who dislikes her wears the fact like it’s a badge of honor and it’s the corniest shit on earth.
1
u/Jaded-Expression-413 4h ago
People didn't really talk about her THAT much before she released, and disappointed even a lot of the people that were excited for her.
It's only been like 24 hours or so since she released. After the weekend it'll die down. You're just exaggerating big time, and the more you spam low effort defending posts the longer people are gonna go on about it. You do you though, not here to police you or anything

I feel alone in actually liking her abilities. She can draw walls and bridges and platforms, and i think she can slide from one end of the map to the other with her 2 lmao.
