Discussion PFF Grades for the Defense

Post image

I know PFF has flaws but it’s fun to follow it.. but these grades make no sense for our defense! Even Courtland Guillory who has the highest grade should be higher than that! I don’t know what else you want from a cornerback!

I guess David Stone didn't see the field.... even more reason to not pay attention to PFF grades

Not sure where the OP got the graphic but for reference Stone graded at 62.0 on 21 snaps

Yahoo sports for this one. I didn’t even notice stone was missing. But a 62.0 makes no sense. I feel there has to be some strong bias in these. If we were 5-0 right now would they grade it differently?

Stone straight up dominated. Insane numbers from pff

Whole line did great even the new guy. secondary was out of place 2 times and got burned for it. D line didn't get pushed back at all. Where our o line looked like they figured something out and started pushing back. Think it wad the RG to LT that made the line work

That shot from the game of him beating his guy (maybe a double I can’t remember) and using his forearm to grab smothers by the neck and stop him dead in tracks was something to see. Dude is such a beast.

No way to flag that play and stopped him dead as if he did grab a face mask dude has to be crazy strong.

I agree is very subjective. More interesting to me than value. I think this breaks it down too far into an individual game. An average play by one player can help another player excel. Football is an emotional team sport.

We really need more out of PJ.

PFF is football astrology but I have come to the conclusion PJ just doesn't like to play football.

You might be on to something.

PJ was supposed to be what Collin Simmons is

I wonder if Okoye starts getting more snaps. Seems smaller than his listed 257#

He reminds me of Kip. Regardless of the score, he's juiced

He’s a bust. We need to move on and give the younger guys snaps

5star bust

I love stats as much as the next guy, but what I saw from Trystan Haynes on Saturday was wildly impressive. I know he gave up the long bomb to Coleman, but dude played with incredible effort and fight. He's going to be great for us in the long run.

Mainly since he was targeted 7 times with 5 reception and receiver drop. He only had 1 pass break up.

This is why I think PPF is not good at the college level. His performance given the situation with Bowen hurt late in the week and against Texas was amazing and I believe the team feed off it. I think it raised the whole secondary.

OK but remember who the receiver was. It was a rookie against an all-pro. I thought he did well under the circumstances.

I agree I think he had a great game. My response was explaining why his PFF was low. I don’t think PFF works for college. It’s for NFL level talent. It actually dings a player for needing help on a tackle. Take the long pass that went through Coleman hands, I contend that Haynes is partially responsible for the drop by Coleman. PPF does see it way. Haynes gets dinged. It a bad metric for college.

What do these numbers even mean?

From google

Pro Football Focus (PFF) is a sports analytics company that breaks down every single play of every football game to grade individual player performance. Unlike traditional stats (like yards or tackles), PFF evaluates how well a player actually executed their assignment.

How PFF Grading Works
PFF analysts watch coaches' film (All-22 tape) and isolate each individual player on every snap.
The Scale: For every play, a player receives a grade between -2.0 and +2.0 in 0.5 increments.
The Baseline: A 0 represents an average, expected play execution.
The Extremes: A spectacular, game-changing play earns a +2, while a catastrophic mistake (like a blown coverage or a fumbled ball) results in a -2.
At the end of a game, these raw play-by-play grades are normalized and mapped to a 0 to 100 scale:
90.0+: Elite / All-Pro level
80.0–89.9: Great / High-quality starter
70.0–79.9: Good / Above-average starter
60.0–69.9: Average / Replacement level
Below 60.0: Poor performance

This is grade for NFL level

There is a lot wrong with it even for NFL

Thank you. But there are 2 numbers per player. 1 in brackets. 1 number not in brackets.

I’m guessing the number in brackets is their grade.
So what does the other number mean?

Number of snaps played

u/Doc_Konk 4d ago

Just going by this our entire defense is average and replaceable.. just not even worth paying attention to

u/braveritas 4d ago

At the NFL level. Do you really think we have a defense full of NFL starters. I think it says we are a very good/excellent college defense.

2

u/Doc_Konk 4d ago

That’s fair. I guess if these PFF grade are graded at the same level as NFL players then it makes more sense

I have no clue what I’m looking at

I’ve been very unimpressed with PJ this season. The true freshman, Kreul, appears to cause way more disruption than him.

These numbers are absolute garbage. Our defense is clearly top 10, yet we have no elite players, no very good players, and only three that rate good, with the rest average to below average.

Just more evidence that PFF is divorced from reality. According to PFF Stone is an average DT, and Jackson is below average.
