80s Slotta Citadel ADD04 Thieves

Post image

"Hey, shut up for a second! Did you hear something?"

Citadel ADD04 Thief from when GW briefly held the license to produce AD&D miniatures for TSR. These were meant to represent the same player character as he grows in experience, with the order going from left to right (low, medium and high levels).

They are likely to be eaten.

I’m new to this type of mini - did they originally come with those hex bases? Or is that your own interpretation?

Yeah, the blister packs had hexagonal bases for most of this series.

The larger monsters came with square 40mm bases, and the beholder & stirges came with flying bases. I think most everything else had hex bases provided.

Personally I'm being a little weird with my basing choices -- I'm trying to do as many as possible with hexes, but smaller creatures (kobolds, goblins, synads, mites, meazels, etc) get 25mm round, and my large monsters get round bases, too.

They're from 1985 when there definitely were hexagonal bases around and would be a very likely candidate for having them originally. They look good on them and obviously don't need to rank up.

I thought these were just different poses not levels! Gosh! O_o

The fact that Citadel had the D&D license is also how we got Ambulls. That was an excuse for them to keep selling their Umber Hulk minis.

Oh yeah, I think I read somewhere that the Rogue Trader team included several fantasy inspired monster stats specifically in the hopes that people would buy the ADD series monsters, heh.

Yep! Even funner fact, Enslavers are supposed to be Beholders, but the illustration looks nothing like a Beholder, presumably because they were afraid of being sued. I can only assume the reason Enslavers didn't become as iconic as Ambulls is because no one used them in their games because they didn't realize what minis they were supposed to use for them.

If you read the description of an Enslaver, it doesn't sound very much like the creature in the illustration. It's very clearly describing a Beholder.

Those sets of three were such a funny idea. These are absolutely beautiful, I particularly like the one in the middle.

Best not to eat lead miniatures though particularly once you've gone to all the trouble of painting them so well.

Also thanks! :)
