This is sad, and I can’t be snarky on this one. These old folks were out here on a cross country trip really living. It takes something to do that at that age.

I mean TBH there are worse ways to go. I assume these people cared about each other, so he was with a person he loved at the end, and was obviously getting the most out of life (how many 80 year olds are doing road trips?) so maybe that's better than if he had spent the last 5 years sitting at home but maybe living a few years longer in the process
My grandfather used to LOVE riding his bike for hours around our city. One day a couple of years before he died I went riding with him and during the ride i discovered that his vision was MUCH worse than we thought it was and his idea of crossing the street safely was inching out slowly and expecting people to stop for the old man on the bike, which they always did.
I considered telling his wife this, and putting an end to his bike riding for his own safety, but figured that even if something were to happen to him it was still better than him just sitting at home all day being miserable but potentially living longer.
Thankfully, he didn't die in a bicycle accident or I'd probably still feel guilty about it lol

It scares me to know there are people that old behind the wheel. You just don't have the reaction time to deal with curveballs anymore.

u/yuckyuckmuckmuck1234 6d ago
I know there are some dangerous old people out there behind the wheel, but so are dangerous inexperienced teen drivers. And middle age drivers not paying attention. I don’t think it’s right to demonize old people behind the wheel because not all are terrible (I get there are a lot). Let’s be honest, it’s always dangerous to be out on the roads no matter the age group.

I suppose, but old people scare me especially. You will encounter unpredictable, unavoidable situations with the need to react quickly and old folks just don't have the same ability to process and execute quickly. The bigger issue to me though is that people generally do not give up their license until something happens that makes them realize they don't have what it takes anymore. That moment should never happen on the road where people could die. And then there are the old folks who know they don't have it anymore and keep driving anyways out of stubbornness. But that is a separate kettle of fish.
Realistically I think everyone should be required to get recertified every 5 to 10 years, possibly less for older folks. Everyone would benefit from being reminded of how you are supposed to drive. Everyone would benefit from dangerous drivers being filtered out.

Or dying from a fairly minor fall. Bumping your head shouldn’t kill you like that. Getting old and rickety as hell is a nightmare.

While it's sad, it gives me fresh perspective that people can and do find boyfriends / girlfriends even at 84 and 89. Wow.
